I have the generic Baoefeng programming cable, it doesn't have the chip but thankfully windows 10 was smart enough to figure out my stupidity. The generic cable however did not work on the USB ports on the front of my computer but work great on the rear USB ports. Not sure why but if someone has issues getting radio to connect first check the cable to radio connection as Randy suggest then try a different USB, I was about to throw in the towel.
@@mrbyamile6973 so the reason is the USB ports on the front of your pc, are actually a hub, and the ones in the back are part of your motherboard. So whenever you see any peripherals that say don't plug into a hub they also mean not to use your front ports
I discovered that you can copy radio to radio by powering down, unplugging, plug in next radio and hit upload to radio. Hope that is usefull info. Thanks for the info you put up here for us.
Do not do this! I bricked radios doing this. Radio Software was different. Copy and paste and go thru settings and manually clone. I’ve also shared my clean baofeng files to help multiple people un-brick their radios. -always save a clean file of your radio so you can recover if needed.
As someone who is working on getting my HAM license and now a proud owner of the UV-5R, I am so glad to have stumbled onto your channel!! You are very informative, entertaining, and put out great content. Thanks for everything you do!!
The kinder, gentler Notarubicon. Went back to this one as I am using chirp on my new TD H3 you recently reviewed and needed some help on Chirp. Excellent as always. Had to laugh at your "growth" over the years!
Excellent step-by-step "How To CHIRP" without getting frustrated. The BEST I have seen: good audio level, good visual & zoom, good English enunciation and thoroughly covering basic CHIRP programming. Many thanks!
Holy cow! The push the cable in EXTRA hard sounded like duh, until I pushed the cable in EXTRA hard and heard the click. I can finally program my radios. I thought it was a mac thing. Turns out it was a thumb thing. Thanks again for all the great content!
Okay, I am three years late to this video. The past many years I used Midland GMRS radios, quite good. This past week I received the TD H3 two pack. Randy, thank you very much for your CHIRP explanation, it is extremely helpful. You have made this 80-year-old incredibly happy. Regarding seeing the NOAA on the screen, here is what I did: Switched to the menu system, moved to number 19, switched to MDF-B changing it from Frequency to Name. Now in the MF-B I see all channel names, not frequency nor channel number. All is good. Cordially, WRZG694
Watched several of your vids after ordering my $43 Wowofeng, and now I come to CHIRP. Downloaded and after seeing the blank opening scream fled back here. You make the non-understandable easy. Can't thank you enough! Your bestest fan and constant viewer in Alabam, Norm
Thank you @TheNotaRobicon for introducing me to the new world of HAM/GMRS radio. Coming from the IT background this has helped me understand more how radio truely works. I am now taking a HAM radio course and looking to get my technicians license and move up from there. Honestly, we need more people in the HAM community like you as a true instructor. I understand the negativity the 'internet' backed hams are giving you, but keep pushing, you're a great instructor! Peace!
I know this is an older video of yours, but I just want to give you props for making solid informational videos without going through the typical HAM nerd (ahem, I mean, "enthusiast") rigmarole. You got me into GMRS with the 935G (affiliate link, of course), and only 3 weeks later I am awaiting my UV-5R coming in the mail tomorrow. Though I can't transmit on this particular HT yet, I found GMRS is rather dead in my area (I live in a very rural area, searching with the FCC there is only one active GMRS license in my town, and it's me), but HAM licenses in my small town are rather abundant. Plus, the fact that HAM repeaters are all around me, gives me hope I can actually receive something. You have a good way of teaching what can be a very overwhelming topic while making it simple enough for the new users to understand.
I watched this video while waiting for my UV-5Rs to arrive in the mail. Got them today and setting them up with CHIRP was a breeze thanks to your video. This was so straightforward.
You have great content. Your the reason I bought two Uv-5r's for me and my wife. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge; You are very appreciated by me and mine.
Oh randy of the past.... You seemed like a very nice and kind person back then..... Only doing your best to help the radio community..... Until the sad hams jaded you.... And turn you to darkness..... No one ever cared about Randy until he picked up the radio...... Some say he usto be a helpful off-road jeep guy..... Before the world changed..... And he is all out of bubble gum...... Road warrior...... Lol:) I'm a big fan Randy:) I'm from the UK..... Northern Ireland..... 👍
Wow, man..I've watched mostly your newer videos before this one, and its amazing the difference in tone. In this video I don't see any of your usual snark, no contempt for sad hams, you even sound all upbeat, like you have hope for the future and faith in humanity....you were unsufferable, man. You definitely made the right decision, for sure. You're FAR more watchable as a jaded, sarcastic jerk! 😂

This channel is the most helpful channel I've ever come across on any subject. I've used youtube to learn a bunch of stuff (carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, computer programming...etc.). This channel is the best I've ever seen. I even kicked in a couple bucks, which I have never done before.
Hi Randy, this is freeidaho from the future. I went back in time to watch your Chirp video. I was surprised to see a younger less jaded Randy in his living room, not NotARubicon World Studios. Either way, thank you for the very clear video. Since I am in the future, I have to use Chirp Next, so we will see how it goes.
CHIRP has standard templates in a drop-down menu for the FRS/GMRS, Marine, NOAA, etc. frequencies. I used the FRS/GMRS template to start with, then added all the NOAA and some Marine frequencies. Then, I saved that file for later use with other radios. Worked great and saved a lot of time. I do wish CHIRP columns had better explanations.
Not a question, just an FYI. I have the newer UV-S9PRO and it isn't in the list of available radios. I selected the BF-F8HP and it worked for the UV-S9PRO in case anyone was wondering.
It was my first time using CHIRP & I was successful adding new frequencies to my new handheld radio. Since my Baofeng BF-H7 didn't appear in the CHIRP model menu list, I had to do a little searching around & found out that TIDRADIO TD-H6 works just fine. This is truly a very helpful & easy to understand video. Thank you! When pasting repeaters to my radio's profile tab within CHIRP, I had to keep an eye on two things; My radio doesn't support DIG Mode. So, I had to choose repeaters that were FM mode. I used OPEN STOCK CONFIG & added NOAA. I also used Query Data Source/RepeaterBook Political Query to add 4 local frequencies. The 4 frequencies are quiet right now (It's 2:55 AM) but I'll go outside in the afternoon to see if I pick up anything. No transmitting, just scanning. 73
Oh wow, did an alien kidnap the original NotaRubicon? I figured you put on a bit of a character in your newer videos but never expected this much of a difference. Love your videos, keep em' coming.
The volumn level...I was not aware that it needed to be at 50% to read, write to, and from radio. Thank you Randy. I bought the tid supersize on your recommendation..the only missing cable was the usb charging for the 3800mah batteries, so as a backup, I purchased a pair of the 6 AA shells and populated them for a quick changeout. Now if the call sign website has corrected their error and updated my uls and cores info..I can add gmrs to my other info, and round-up my preppies and set them up with your online specials . Now if someone made a program for programming a drone as easy as chirp..wow.. 🫵 one of your favorite viewers. 👍👌
If you are using CHIRP to program a GMRS Baofeng UV-5G, set the brand and model to Radioddity UV-5G. If you try to use Baofeng UV-5X (the previous GMRS model), you'll get an error telling you that you're using the wrong model. Thanks for the good videos.
This is very helpful, thanks. I just used CHIRP to program my new UV5R from my Mac. Perhaps the most useful thing was the advice to make sure the connector is fully clicked in, I thought I had it fully seated and initially CHIRP wasn't able to connect to the radio. Pushing more firmly fixed that problem
I am new user for a Baofeng BS-888S. and I have been watching several videos about, many really bad, some more or less good. But your explanation and knowledge, is been the best of all. Thank you for your effort to teach. I will be watching all of your videos.
Dude! (California speak for Sir) Thank you so much, I was exhausted watching some of the extreme radio nerds attempting to explain something that you made so simple.
Thank you for your very helpful and clear walk through. Programmed my Baofeng UV21 Pro using the UV17 Pro menu. Really enjoy and appreciate all of your presentations.
Who are you and what have you done with @thenotarubicon , i will not be fooled by you, doppelganger! Jokes aside, thanks for the vid. New GMRS license owner and appreciate that you filmed all this content in preparation for the day that I, your favorite viewer, would appear
Noob to all of this and trying to get a handle on programming my ‘starter’ radio. This is the video I needed to see even at 3 years old. Bang up job. Thankfully you were on your meds back then and able to get this info out for a simpleton like me. Thanks.
I have to say Thank You for this video. I watch all your videos but this one hit home. I have been programming my radios from Repeaterbook one frequency at a time which took me hours to complete. When I understood how to use the "CHIRP" program, I completed my programming in minutes. Thanks again!!
Not to disparage any of you fine folks who prefer to use Chirp but I just want you to know that I program my Baofengs on the front panel buttons LIKE A REAL MAN!
To be A REAL MAN you need to be able to program your Baofengs using the front panel buttons AND you need to know how to use CHIRP to put your call sign as the power on message.
FYI I just went through getting my' obviously a fake cable' to work. I ordered the radios , antennae and cable from Ali. Anyways there are two main cables. Ftdi and prolific. If it's not working pop the cover off the usb connector carefully. Look at the chip in there and google the driver for it. Worked perfectly for me, cheap cable that will be replaced but I got it to work.
9:45 If the FCC wants to spend my own tax dollars hunting me down for using a MURS, GMRS or FRS frequency in the middle of BFE- and I mean 60+ miles from any gas station, then so be it. I would be rather amused if that was what they spent their day doing. I hate bureaucracies and I understand the frustration from people who get licensed on these bands, but seriously the government gets enough of my money. Rant over 73.
Thanks for all the help learning to use Chirp !! I now have all 4 Baofengs programed the same so the other family members only need to bring up the right memory.channel. Very helpful and yes I'm one of those long time hams. Not all of us are sad hams. These radios make it easy to get other family members interested because they don't have to use a bunch of buttons or knobs.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I just purchased 2 uv5r radios and was struggling to program it by myself he keypad. This video saved me hours of frustration. Thank you
This is an excellent and easy to understand video. I followed along and now my radio is ready to go and, I know how to add in more channels later. Thank you very much for taking the time to demonstrate this procedure.
Hey Randy, Love your sense of humor. It helps with learning. Keep it up, my friend. I finally decided to jump into the ham world after years of fear & the unknown. Now it seems fascinating. I got my first experience with Satcom & FM/HF in the military. Now after retirement, I miss using them. So here I am. Thanks again. Dave
Very quick and simple I have viewed at least five videos on this same subjects by Ham Operators and this was the simplest, quickest and eaisest to understand
D/L'd and installed Chirp yesterday after my cable arrived (thanks for the links) and it all works great! Thank you for this *excellent* tutorial - gave me confidence for the basics, and showed several features that aren't immediately apparent.
Ugh, this is so much easier than keeping a printout or even having a document on my phone and putting them in manually. Though it's worth knowing HOW to program it manually! Thank you for this!
I have my first two KG-905G radios on order, from your link I might add - I am as new as new gets when it comes to this game! I find your videos fun, informative... downright enjoyable. This brief tutorial on CHIRP is fantastic. I guess I need to contact Buy Two Way Radios to be sure to get the necessary cable as well. Thanks for being a great resource!
Randy you used to be so happy before the sad hams came along. I personally love new sarcastic RUclips Randy... "The experts".. I have learned so much about GMRS from you and I am building a repeater now...
The copy and paste feature you showed major time savings and nice! 🥰✈️👍🏾💕💕💕👍🏾✈️🥰thank you for sharing I’ll try it later on when get back home. I was manually going in there and resetting counting columns to follow up after the download very time consuming good skill to know yet hectic copy and paste saves time and the day! Just starting using chirp 🐥 yesterday and love it!
Thank you. My cable arrived today d/l CHIRP, have all repeaters in my area installed. Quite easy and straightforward. Better than punching keys plus I have names on the channels.
Randy, sorry for the fire drill on my part with my questions after attempting to update my radio with CHIRP. I should have read further and visited the CHIRP FAQ section first. All is good. Thank you for responding.
Great Video sir! It took me about 13 seconds to figure out your shirt... I've been Jeepless for about 17 years. I need to change that soon. I had a 67 CJ5 and a97 Cherokee Sport back in the day.
Thanks for the hint on pushing the connector hard. I was about to return the cable. I was getting "unexpected response from radio" error when downloading. Pushed harder, and it downloaded successfully.
That was an amazing video. It’s far more complex than I had imagined, and this was so well done that it gives me hope, but had I known it was so involved I certainly wouldn’t have bought these raidos. My life is already too complicated. But I’ve stepped into it now I suppose.
Just recently found your channel and this is another really helpful video. I'm a newbie to HAM and I can honestly say, your videos have helped me more than anyone, book, or channel has... and that includes me physically going to HAM equipment swap meets - just to meet folks. Folks are pretty cagey for such a niche hobby, I'd don't know what that is all about, or maybe its something unique to SF Bay Area but its strange. I bought a couple UV5R radios back in 2019 to add to my six pack of Motorola MR350R GMRS radios but they are was just too much for me and have been sitting in a box unused until now. I still have a long way to go, and need to get licensed etc. but at least things are finally progressing forward. Just wanted to say "Thanks" and I think your videos are really helpful. Please keep doing them.
I Think it's important to note that when you download from your uv5r chirp creates an img file. When you create a new file or window in chirp, this new file is a .CSV file. These .CSV files can NOT be uploaded to the radio, only .img file can be uploaded. So you must copy and paste to a .csv file before uploading.
My newest Baofeng UV-5r seems to have that busy channel blocker enabled so I can't talk to my son upstairs, I will try using CHIRP to disable it now. Thanks for your help, man. Your favorite Viewer
On a side note, I see you are a Jeep Guy. I have a VEEP . A CJ 3A body on a Full frame with a VW engine and reduction gears. Because of you I bought 3 Baofeng radios.
Thank you so much for this video. I bought some Boafengs and like them. So I ordered a few more but they were an earlier model and therefore the two models didn't communicate with each other. I'm totally new to using walkie talkies and so this video really helped me get them going.
Praise Xenu for sending us @TheNotaRubicon to help us radio newbies! Is there some website that has CHIRP files already for my area so I dont have to start from scratch? I basically just want to copy someone else's homework. Like the file you show in your video, how you have laid out all the FRS, GMRS, and MURS chans already.
Great video. The "Randy" breaks it down very well. I had NO issues following along. Which is strange. Radio reference does require a premium membership (not too pricy) before you get what you need from them. AND...With WINDOWS 10, I found it VERY helpful to input the actual longitude and latitude in the search query. (get it from google maps easy) and limit your distance (defaults kilometers) so that I didn't have to wade through thousands of stations. I call'em the way I see'em and the "CHIRP" is way better that that darn TD-BL-1 piece of shyt. (However...that being said I can see how I can use the two together in order to STORE my radio on my phone for quick access). Until the thieves at Tidradio make it right for stealing from me, by selling me JUNK I'm not a fan.
Thanks for making Chirp so much easier to use. I cannot get a new file to open, nothing happens when selecting new file. Ctrl+N I appreciate the help. I have the new cable and it works well. I am using 1 UV-5R and 4 BF-F8Hp & RT series radios.
I love finding new content creators to watch. Sometimes you get gems like this. See, i got started in a lot of your newer stuff. Im a minute in and havent seen even a hint of sarcasm yet. Thats got to be a record lol.
Randy...you got me there man... and then... the cable failed... again just like you said... found the port installed the driver and software...they sent me the BT-480 software and boofunct USB cable with the CH340 chipset in it...and it was a anticlimactic "radio not responding"... i have ordered the cable you have listed... and noted it has a different p/n PC03 chipset designation "FTDI"... be a 5 minute program install if this cable works. Follow up: FTDI cable arrived had to manually install driver from b-tech web site... and CHIRP and the "boo-funk" danced... all programmed for my local area.. and GMRS unlock tricks still work on 2023 BF-F8HP...

Noob to all of this and trying to get a handle on programming my ‘starter’ radio. This is the video I needed to see even at 3 years old. Bang up job. Thankfully you were on your meds back then and able to get this info out for a simpleton like me. Thanks.
Bruh what?
@@L33TZER Context, context, context. I understood exactly what the dude meant.
Just got around to programming my UV5R, the best radio ever made, using this guide. Thank you for providing this information to us simpletons.
Before he dropped the nice-guy persona and embraced his inner sassy radio dork
I have to say Thank You for this video. I watch all your videos but this one hit home. I have been programming my radios from Repeaterbook one frequency at a time which took me hours to complete. When I understood how to use the "CHIRP" program, I completed my programming in minutes. Thanks again!!
This is Randy before the "radio experts" got to him !
LOL.
Excellent and to the point with no stupid ads! Thanks!!
Not to disparage any of you fine folks who prefer to use Chirp but I just want you to know that I program my Baofengs on the front panel buttons LIKE A REAL MAN!
there are things you cant do on the front that's why chirp can be useful
Shit, I didn't know that's what it takes to be a man... Thanks!
I so much prefer these old, informative, pre-schick videos from him.
It's so weird to watch an old video that is done by Serious Randy. lol
thats back when i was still taking my medication.
Lol I was thinking the same thing! :P
UV-5R comes in today.. plan on setting up the locals (no transmit).. time for a new adventure!
I just successfully programmed my baofeng with the help of this video. Thank you so much.
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I just purchased 2 uv5r radios and was struggling to program it by myself he keypad. This video saved me hours of frustration. Thank you
You know, seeing you talk normally is way better than the other videos.. Just saying.
Great video BTW - I downloaded it and added it to my prepper phone.
Sorry, this is what happens when i go off my meds.
I watch for the education and abuse!!
This is an excellent and easy to understand video. I followed along and now my radio is ready to go and, I know how to add in more channels later. Thank you very much for taking the time to demonstrate this procedure.
cable cost as much as the radio ha ha
Actually no the price is less than the radio
Hey Randy, Love your sense of humor. It helps with learning. Keep it up, my friend. I finally decided to jump into the ham world after years of fear & the unknown. Now it seems fascinating. I got my first experience with Satcom & FM/HF in the military. Now after retirement, I miss using them. So here I am. Thanks again. Dave
Very quick and simple I have viewed at least five videos on this same subjects by Ham Operators and this was the simplest, quickest and eaisest to understand
Wow, what a great instructional video. You really did a good job. Thank you for taking the time to do it. It was so helpful!
Liked the chirp video. Nice to know that copy and paste works on CHIRP. Makes assigning channels much easier.
I see many people are having problems with that cable just reading the reviews, I'm not a HAM trying to get started. Great video btw :)
Wasn't able to see this comment until i fixed the problem with the cable. Thanks for the help.
By far the best and most concise tutorial. Thanks
Excellent. This is an exceptionally clear explanation. Just what I needed to program my new Baofeng. Thanks!
Just downloaded chirp and donated with PayPal! Thx

Thank you for this video this is very helpful.
On a side note, I see you are a Jeep Guy. I have a VEEP . A CJ 3A body on a Full frame with a VW engine and reduction gears. Because of you I bought 3 Baofeng radios.
same
Thank you so much for this video. I bought some Boafengs and like them. So I ordered a few more but they were an earlier model and therefore the two models didn't communicate with each other. I'm totally new to using walkie talkies and so this video really helped me get them going.
Best Chirp tutorial I have seen! Thanks!
Got my cable, started using Chirp today. This video made it pretty easy.
Excellent "how To" video - and on a Mac too. Got me up and running easily.👍
Great video! Trial and error method worked, but this was much better! Thank you Randy!
Im glad you NOW know how to pronounce Baofeng properly.
Thanks for making Chirp so much easier to use. I cannot get a new file to open, nothing happens when selecting new file. Ctrl+N
I appreciate the help. I have the new cable and it works well. I am using 1 UV-5R and 4 BF-F8Hp & RT series radios.
Thank you for all your video's!You get to the point!Smart experienced advice with no BS.Love it!!!
Thank You Sir.
Ordering the Cable from your page tomorrow.
Would love to see this video updated using Chirp Next on an empty F8HP (excluding how to download it and obtain the cable) at the amateur level.
Such a great tutorial, thank you so much as this really cleared up some things for me. Cant wait to start using it.
I love finding new content creators to watch. Sometimes you get gems like this. See, i got started in a lot of your newer stuff. Im a minute in and havent seen even a hint of sarcasm yet. Thats got to be a record lol.
I made this back when I was still taking my medication.
😂@@TheNotaRubicon
