    Hi Matt. I can help you if you'll listen... I've had more than 50 years of snow driving experience. It's not like sand. When your tires spin on snow the snow gets more slippery. The trick is to just apply enough power to move the vehicle without spinning the wheels. As the snow compresses under the tires they'll get a bit of grip, but if you spin them you lose that traction. Once you're moving, if you can use momentum, sometimes "giving it" a bit can work a bit but it's still going to be better if you can just match the tires speed with the movement. If you're stopped in snow, that won't usually work (unless it's shallow snow with a rough surface underneath). ...So then is the time to back up a hair (without spinning the tires), then try forward again (without spinning tires) and use your momentum to get past where you had just been slipping. Remind yourself: "It's not like sand!" :)
    Hope that helps. You guys do great work!

    • @offroad6309
      @offroad6309 2 года назад +7

      To add always turn facing the way out before stopping at the beginning. Your tires are warm and melt the snow underneath, then it freezes up so you are on a ice block to start with. After unloading and getting ready pull the truck a few feet forward then do the rescue. This gives the tires a chance to cool a bit. Learned this the hard way with semi's in the North Dakota oil fields.
      2 trucks and no chains?? A must have for self recovery. Can't tell how many times I threw iron just to go a short ways.

    Matt, thank you + the crew for your videos. Always entertaining + interesting! I'm not trying to tell you how to get vehicles unstuck, but in my 50 years of driving in Canadian snow I've learned that less throttle, the better. Try not to spin the tires on snow or ice (unlike sand). Slow, steady power to the tires, trying to avoid spinning them works much better than losing traction by applying too much throttle. The friction of spinning tires cause snow to melt, glazing it + turning it into ice under the tires. Sometimes it does work, if you're on gravel + the tires dig down enough to hit the dirt but on hard packed roads, it's not the best way. A spinning tire on ice = 0 traction. Sometimes the best method is to rock back + forth until you get a little momentum, then slowly give more throttle as you pick up speed. Definitely different than sand!

    • @justinauker8901
      @justinauker8901 2 года назад +6

      @ Mat, this comment is spot on. Read it! Try it! It works!
      I got a pickup with a gooseneck out by using the gentle throttle/rock it technique after someone else spent several minutes polishing the ice with high tire speeds with zero success. One gentle move backwards, and then forward without spinning and it was out.
      It works best to use light brake pressure and tap the throttle rapidly, but gently, as you fine tune the amount of power to traction. This same technique has helped me out countless times while snowwheeling in my Tahoe with 33's here in Northern Utah. Tiny by snowwheeling standards, but I can still get around in 18" when its warm and wet, and easily 2' of powder.

    • @R.Sole88109
      @R.Sole88109 2 года назад +5

      Norm Parrott, your advice is spot on.👍🏻
      The only thing I can add in my experience is to get up hills like at 0830 you need kinetic energy to overcome gravity and lack of traction so kick it in the guts before you approach the climb.

Looking forward to seeing your wrecker when it’s all built and ready to take on some of the challenges you guys get involved in. Pretty sure it's a combination of just making entertaining content, the stubbornness of a professional who think they don't need chains, and the confidence that they can get themselves out of any jam. But I am with you, the ten min spent chaining up would of prevented hours of additional work/ effort. And our video would of been a lot less entertaining.

    You've also inspired a ton of people everywhere. We are down in S Texas on the beach. There's an off-road rescue group here that goes and helps people who get stuck on the beach all the time. They do it for fun and bragging rights. I talked to some of them when they came to help me get off the beach, and they know all about this channel, the Golden Nugget project, Trevor falling all the time, the ropes, the whole deal.
    A lot of people all over are safer because of what you've taught them with these videos. Many others they help out are also safer.

    You guys never cease to cheer me up! Glad Ed's OK! Soooo a question I've pondered for a great long while now is: Why not meatier tires on the Ford? They seem to give you trouble on a fairly regular basis (although not often like this, admittedly). Just cause it's a tow rig? Could there be a happy medium maybe? More grip & not losing any weight rating, etc? Edit: I spoke (typed) too soon! You DID upgrade didn't you?! Are those Wranglers on it? wow. Awesome job as always no matter what it takes!

    Hi Matt, you guys did a fine job as you always do, I just wanted to pass on little tip that you may or may not be aware of. If you are stuck on ice you can take a chain and lay it on the ice so it can be grabbed by the spinning tire and then you just drive over the chain hopefully to better ground. Of course there are better ways but in a pinch it works pretty good. I really enjoy the videos, thank you all very much.
