Les Grognards and Bulldogs are great kits for this! The Raumjäger kit is also a nice one for a Steel Legion alternative or for sci-fi Wehrmacht parachute troopers
Something I really appreciate is that even though Duncan has his own paint range, he still uses other ranges where he feels they're the appropriate colour.
Thanks for watching everyone! We hope you enjoyed this tutorial and have fun creating and kit-bashing your own regiments, kill-teams or squads! Let us know if you have done any yourself in the comments below, we'd love to hear from you! Cheers Dunc & Rog
My dad was a huge reenactor (French fur trader/ww2 correspondence) and it was a huge part of my childhood. He was the one who got me into the miniatures hobby! Greatest painting teacher AND a reenactor? So glad to see you dressing up and enjoying living history!
"La Garde meurt, elle ne se rend pas!" Great kitbash Duncan. Would be cool to see more like this, especially with nods to actual historical armies. Admittedly, the Imperial Guard is so good for things like that!
An old regiment made to be in the Astra Militarum. Eagles everywhere. A trooper with a two headed Imperial Eagle standard would really finish these guys off. Cool idea, this lot. 👍

Vive Le Space France! Lovely tutorial, and very inspiring. I've been holding onto so Les Grognods from Wargames Atlantinc's Death Fields range, with the hopes to make a Vostroyan Firstborn army. But with the intention to possibly use it at tournaments I'd much rather have official GW components. This video has given me a new approach to that project. Now to just finish other projects first, lol.
As both a fellow French and Napoleonic era fan (I know, those two facts often come together XD), I must say that this miniature is wonderful, and GOSH YOUR UNIFORM ! I used to do some research on the subject of how uniforms were, were made and worn under Napoleon a while ago, and everything in yours in ON POINT, it's incredible.
A full on sculpting tutorial from Duncan? Today is a good day. Also, Napoleon really knew how to make his army look good. That uniform design is pure class and I can see why it still inspires people after more than 200 years.
I work as a historic interpreter playing an infantryman in the Army of the Potomac. It inspired me to want to build a Civil War themed Astra Militarum regiment. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this idea 😁
Thank all the Gods that I'm NOT the only one who creates Astra Militarium regiments for other gamers using historical uniforms/figures and LOTS of Green Stuff to get unique looking, fun to paint minis. I'd never used E45 cream this way before (I use it on my crusty feet after a long day walking round all the charity shops that I get my terrain bits from :-D), so this is definitely going to be something fun to try for myself :-) Fantastic to see such inspiring videos, so a HUGE thank you, Duncan, for posting this.
When I first saw the screen shot, I thought it was part of the War Games Atlantic miniature Les Grognards set. This one looks fun to paint, I will pick up a set.
You're an absolute inspiration. Thank you for uploading this great video. The Space Red Coats will have this Guard for breakfast - line always beats column tactics.
I've been really thinking about doing some Caroleans with the new Krieg plastics and that musket conversion has been killing me. Thanks for the video!!
I don't really do complex conversions myself, but I always try to add little touches to make a squad 'my own'. This has inspired me to maybe go a bit further :)
Thank you for this amazing kitbashing Duncan. It looks like a super cool project to complete for whoever would follow your steps. I enjoyed the video as a crossover of my two favourite universes. Very creative.
Excellent conversion. Presumably as its all GW bitz you can field them in official GW tournaments too..? Nice to see a painting tutorial which isn’t just a pair of hands.!!! ;-)
Oh and btw, love the Two Thin Coats paints! Great consistency and you have the BEST bottle design! Looking forward for the general release of the 2nd set (couldn’t afford to back on kickstarter, I apologise!) and hope you keep them coming!
You know, i had the exact same idea for my guard regiment using the new guard kit , really love the look you gave them and some great inspiration to make them look even better. Definately gona be coming back to this video allot. Vive l'empereur!!
Awesome stuff! This approach may actually be a great starting point for plastic Vostroyans, an army I fell deeply in love with when they were released alongside Cities of Death, but who were super intimidating for me because they were all white metal. Great inspiration, thanks a lot!
My custom Astra Militarum army has a detachment based on the 95th Rifles (because if you're into the napoleonic war and don't like Sharpe I'm sorry, there's no saving you) so this is super helpful regarding the rifles! Thank you so much!
I'm currently converting and painting my guard based on my dad's regiment, The Household Cavalry. Waiting for the rough riders to appear to start on that conversion journey. Just got to figure out how to do the helmets. I have loved watching your work Duncan. Get job.
My Father in Law was in Royal Scots Dragoons and I would love but have no time to make kilts and bearskins on a guard army along with household cavalry rough riders.

Very nice. Not too over the top and insane looking. Looks very practical and believable. Also like that you put the type of bush and paints used in the video too. And you have a ASMR voice as well.

Wow, I did not know that you are an reenactor! Very cool! I once saw the reenactment of a battle of the napoleonic era here in Austria. It was amazing! Not only what all the reenactors set up but also how many they were. They had not only infantry but artillery and even cavalry! Very interesting and impressive! The conversion you made is very nice! I want to create an army in the style of the Austrian army from that time, so white coats for infantry, brown for artillery and, at least in my case, green for the cavalry. I have chosen a specific cavalry regiment, chevauleger, with green coats. All lapels are red and the left shoulder too. That should tie the army a bit together, I hope ;) I will mainly use the GW models and I am not yet sure if I will go for the shakos for all the models from the Wargames Atlantic models. I also tried to copy the typical Austrian helmet from that era with the helmet from the Elucidian Starstriders kill team, one with a visor. That looks good so far, but the paint job is not yet completed. I hope I will be done with that army this year! Thanks for your videos! They are always very inspiring!
