What I'd like to know, if you don't mind, is how you ended up handling the poor-fitting tops and tongue-in-groove wall components. Did you leave them as is and prime them? Cover them in blue tape? Sand them down? just assemble it and prime while they're covered?

Painting terrain is a wonderfully messy process at times. There's some great techniques on display here. Personally I really like the not-quite-drybrushing for large models like tanks. A softer drybrush works best for this in my experience. Something like a makeup brush making circular motions. You almost buff the colour onto the model and it looks great.
Also, never expected to see Duncan do object source lighting. As rudimentary as the technique shown in this video might be, it's still a great looking effect. If you get confident using that on a few terrain walls then you can start doing it on your infantry or vehicles. Plasma guns in particular can look great casting a glow on their wielders.

Took me 2 weekends. Total of 20 hours give or take with no airbrush cheating. I didn't do the glowing light effects after how time consuming the one I did was.
The dry brushing and wash stages took literal minutes. I batch painted each set that looked exactly the same.
I also didn't fix every mistake because honestly no one is going to look at these up close. Its literal back ground pieces.

So I finally primed all of my minis (I’ve got about 2,500-3,000pts of Black Templars) and I’m still nervous to try to paint them. I did kinda paint three chainswords, two pauldrons, and a couple of items on the Impulsor and Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought but then I quit.
I expect that they’ll all be painted in time for 12th edition to launch.
How about a quick video some time where you show us how to properly clean the brushes using brush soap AND HOW IN THE CRAP DO WE KEEP PAINT AND WATER FROM GETTING DOWN INTO THE DARN METAL BECAUSE IT SEEMS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.
    Sigh.

I went the lazy route on my Boarding Actions set (aka I was too excited about playing with them). I just used my airbrush to blacken-prime all of the pieces (ignoring the join sections of course) and went all "Rusty-tacky." Used random Greens, and orangish primer sprays, then threw a bunch of rust washes from Vallejo/Citadel/etc (airbrushing and brushing). Then I went back and attempted to do some highlights with either some drybrushing and skull coloring. Still working on the metalish details and stuff like the TV screens. But then I see videos like this and I feel like I went too lazy lol. so much better detailing in the long run. My "ships" look like an instant Tetanus nightmare.
Quite fun though! I'm starting to enjoy painting terrain or bigger models over tinier ones now. Going to try your tip for Necrond Compound though! I forgot that I bought some and haven't really used it much.

Is it just part of the trade that you waste that much paint? like is that something they encourage you all to do to show using large puddles of paint for small little details and then just leaving them behind like it's no big deal? l imagine that really helps sell a lot more paint, I know you're kind of your own boss now but I'm assuming they're after is many years as you've done this habits are hard to break. but then again you do have your own painting line now so it probably wouldn't pay to break that habit
