  • The main character of this box is actually the setting itself; the Space Hulk known as the Gallowdark. This new terrain set is a departure from the previous Zone Mortalis style kits from Forgeworld and Necromunda and is designed to be infinitely re-arrangeable with an interlocking tongue and groove system. Let's check it out.

I cut off all the lashes and filled the holes in the walls with the cut-off lashes and greenstuff. Also glued the caps on all pillars except the diagonal pieces. After everything dried, using a template I drilled two 3 mm diameter holes in every part that was supposed to connect and added magnets.
With 4 magnets (2N+2S) the connections are very stable, I think even a single double sided magnetic connection could do the job.

Sounds like it has some of the problems Core Space had - assembly of a specific map layout is a chore and there are durability issues which will become apparent with multiple teardowns. Of course, you don't need tools to take your Core Space layouts apart!
Perhaps with a few spare columns (so you have enough I, T and + columns for any layout), trimming of the tongues on the wall sections and a thorough application of magnets, you could simplify assembly.. but that sounds like a lot of work!

I'm very curious what we'll get in boxes 2, 3, and 4. I assume it will have a compatible tongue and groove system, but will it be more of the same, or maybe (probably) themed by the teams in the box. I'm also anticipating that the next box adds verticality as well.

Thanks for the fun, engaging review (as always)!
In addition to masking the lugs as you say, there are two other things that I found really helped getting the kit to come apart easily (and feeling like an Xmas morning Lego set!):
    1. Use a small, flat modelling steel file on the lugs - you can get them fitting beautifully in no time!
    2. The worst culprits for caps that are hard to get off are the tops of the pillars that are built in to the middle of the large sections. In addition the tight fit is much more acute on the front and back edges of those pillar tops. Again, the steel file over just the front and back edges of these got them to pop on and off easily in no time!

@@dekai7992 I saw a video on magnetizing the set and it looked pretty sweet. I just started painting my terrain up and have gotten all the big wall sections done. I taped off all corner cap sections and the end connection sections before priming. I then sanded down the end connectors and the exposed cap sections really well and I can put my caps on and take them off with little effort and they still provide a snug connection. Also my walls go togther fairly easy without me killing my self to get them in and out and they also are still snug enough. But yeah if you wanna put in the work you can magnetize which would be really nice once it's finally done!

Thank you Ash for the useful safety warnings for this product. It's helpful to know that you can actually get hurt from using it.
Seeing this, my criticism is that it does not look like an alien ship at all. It looks like just another human Imperium ship. Also and as usual Games Workshop is quite chinsey on how many walls it supplies while charging out the butt for their products. If something breaks, you have to glue it or you are out of luck. There are no spares. They also way over charge for everything they produce. I worked for a plastics company for years, so I know how much materials cost. Tooling the production line does not fly as an excuse either, since once they sell a certain number of copies that is paid for pretty quickly. As long as there are much cheaper options, which every other option is cheaper, I will stay away.
If you watch a few tutorials on terrain making on RUclips, you can make all of this yourself with some patience, effort, and creativity for just a few dollars.

Problem is that you don't necessarily use every single pillar socket in a layout. So you need at least some dark paint in there or the grey plastic will show through in places where you don't have a wall attached.. So it looks like you'd have to file down every single one of the wall tabs for a looser fit... and they still might scratch at the paint inside the pillar grooves. And sanding down the pillar tops feels like even more hassle. Overall design just feels not thought through for what they were going for. If you just glue everything together for a fixed layout, it's great. But having it modular and expect you to assemble/disassemble it on the regular, which just doesn't work with how they designed and engineered the parts.
And even if they really, really wanted to do it this way for some reason, with the tight fricion locking and everything, it's weird they got the tolerances wrong. On many modern kits you can friction-lock a lot of the turrets/weapons and have them easily swappable with no need for magnets, but somehow they dropped the ball on a thing that was supposed to be built from the ground up to be swappable with friction... Really feels like the terrain was designed as a stand alone 40k thing that was adapted to 'work' for Kill Team after it was already manufactured.

I by no means am big brein boy. However this looks designed without any thinking. It's just so very impractical from any standboy. Not to mention the people working at geedubs must be aware of magnets and this being 3d designed they could easily cut some groves in for magnets (that of course if the terrain was designed to better fit). I mean it takes less than 1 minute to cut a few magnet grooves. Sure the kit doesn't come with magnets but it's a quality of life change for those that wish to use it, expecially tournament organizers. The caps themselves should have some pointy bits that stick out and the pillars have top groves in them for example, you just lift them up and tada, no rubbing against the paint job trying to unhinge them... there are soo many design choices, even if you search online and just copy somebody else's ... it's baffling... it's like looking at someone making a wheel and their wheel out of all the choices turns out to be a thin square shape...

Disappointing. Not sure why they designed and engineered it this way. Why not just have notches all the way down the pillar, allowing the wall sections to slide down into those notches like the Necromunda/Zone Mortalis doorways? It could have a much looser tolerance and still wouldn't come apart during regular gameplay if you notched and keyed it right. It feels like they really, really wanted the entire thing to be absolutely rock solid once put together, so you could pick up the entire layout without it coming apart... But honestly I don't get the point in that. I'm not gonna pick up my assembled layout and prance down the street with it or anything.. and they really sacrificed a lot of the ease of use and modularity that way.
Especially surprising since all of their modern terrain kits have all been brilliantly thought out and manufactured. Even the AoS stormvault terrain that's essentially just square plastic hills can go together and combine is surprisingly clever ways. I was excited about this set andI never expected they would drop the ball on it with a track record like that. Can't help but wonder they might have had someone leave the terrain design team and this was done by someone new and a bit less seasoned at identifying sticking points in the design?
