  • Sometimes, you might finish a model and think that it looks just a bit too clean. Freshly polished armour, gleaming paintwork - these things look great but sometimes you might want that warrior to look like he's seen some action. He may be a veteran and you want him to look the part, and that's what this video is all about!
In this video we take a painted miniature from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 and show you how you can take him to hell and back.
In this video we cover a variety of techniques that you can use to simulate damage to your troops. Whilst we use a Space Marine (Space Wolves Intercessor) for our example, the methods used are approached in such a way so as to focus on the technique rather than the particular colours so as to make this applicable to any miniature. We cover this in four segments:
    1. Chipping the paint using paint, creating the optical illusion of chips and scratches etched in the armour.
    2. Placing bullet holes by literally drilling and carving them into the model.
    3. Adding dust kicked up around the warrior's feet by making use of weathering pigments.
    4. Creating scars and wounds on the soldier's flesh.
These techniques are all great fun to use and can we used on a wide variety of miniatures from almost any game system or miniatures you like even tanks!
We hope you guys enjoy this one and remember, if you haven't already, check out our Academy over at www.duncanrhodes.com where we have almost 350, yes 350, full, indepth tutorials on there including a huge 15 part Fundamentals of Miniature Painting course included in the membership.

Three years ago, I thought it would be fun to try the warhammer 40k tabletop game... bought a miniature boxed set, and when I got home, was completely dismayed because I realized they weren't already painted! Couldn't return it, because it was opened, so I threw it in the garbage. Brother-in-law came by right after, and pulled the box out and showed me the youtube channel and started watching your tutorials. So basically, to make a short story long, thank you so much, for all of your tutorials! They are so educational, in more ways than one, because I don't know about other people, but I would literally panic, if I screwed up on painting something, but your calm attitude, (as well as your solutions to common screw ups) always helps me achieve the results I want. Thank you again, so much! Just bought Mortarion so going to rewatch your tutorial and get to it! Maybe even add some battle damage, too!

Henry Steele of Cult of Paint once said that weathering is a necessary skill for applying decals. And he was right. A little weathering goes a long way to masking the fact that those decals never seem to go on perfectly. But you can use those imperfections. They're perfect little guidelines for where to put your chips!

I find for the dust step rather than a powder I like to use a really thinned down version of the same texture paste I use for painting the base! At least with the AK versions, it works really well once it dries, and you don't have to worry about the colors not being right XD

Love the techniques! I usually do it before painting like you said, but something I've found helps sell the bullet holes is putting some putty in the hole and then squishing it down withe back of a brush/bit of wire. If the putty is a little dry when you do it, it makes a nice crusty ridge around the hole.

I do this in a particular order with my Astartes models.
Rank and file Legionaries ✅️ + weathering
Captains, Champions or and named models ✅️ (but to a far lesser extent, and more fine tuned, and no weathering at all except the boots) to bring some pop to them.
    Primarchs ❌️.
Paint them as flawless as possible, to really make these guys pop. Next to the rest of your army it will really make them stand out.
Awesome as ever Sir Duncan 👏👏

Love the video Duncan! Going to implement this on my marines to contrast my Sororitas' eternally pure and clean look that I went for with them.
Question: because I'm insane, I'm painting my custom chapter in Multicam colors; a blend of various greens and browns. Any advice on a highlight for chipping/damage on them? Should I choose just one color that's a "good enough" fit for a highlight and go with that?

    • @DuncanRhodesDRPA

Use a pure white. I normally never layer white armour in a pure white as you have no where to highlight up to. If you layer with a slight off-white then you can highlight your armour and the chips with a pure white. Hope that helps ☺

That's a tough one for sure. I would place the highlights towards the front face of the model as that's what you'd look at the most. Do an experiment and see if that works for you 😊

When it comes to fixing that dust effect into place, can you use water?

Not with the powder as it would become a paste. You need to use pigment fixer.

an alternative for pigment fixer is hairspray or varnish.

The primaris armour is bonded ceramite and plasteel. It might well be lore appropriate to have a deeper layer of silvery plasteel!
