- The Evolution R210CMS is a compound mitre saw that can cut wood, steel or plastic all with the supplied blade. Costing less than £50 this machine is superb for the home DIY user that does not need one of the larger Evolution machines. The machine is tested out on timber, acrylic, aluminium and steel and a mitre cut and a compound cut are all demonstrated.

This will probably be the last tool review of 2016 due to the amount of time I am spending on site. I do have a few videos on the computer that need editing, but they are not reviews. Bought this saw 5 years ago and now use it all the time. Found out today from your film, how to lock the saw in the down position after 5 years of use ! Lol
I had a pair of electrical pliers for 20 years, then an electrician showed me how to cut small bolts with them 😂
Impressive little saw. I've just ordered one! I'm so glad you turned the audio down when cutting, I hate it when it gets left at the recorded levels and bloody deafens you! After-all, we all know what one of these sounds like!
Yes, this is a cracking saw for the money, but all of the evolution saws are noisy when cutting metal, as you point out.

@@ultimatehandyman If you want a connector for it to your hoover i can 3d print one for you, got a 3d printer 2 years ago, fought with it for a few months then left it gathering dust for a while, then a few months back i decided it was time to master the bloody thing, now i've got it all dialed in and it prints lovely, just send me the OD of your hoover inlet, it'll take less than an hour to print. Did you ever get one of those cheap Chinese laser cutters ?
Aluminum won't spark as it's non ferrous

I bought one of these the other week and to be honest I wasn’t expecting much. As a kitichen fitter my go to mitre saw is a large Bosch do everything saw costing over 500quid. This cheap saw is as light a feather. I checked it for square both 90and 45 and it was perfect straight out of the box.I bought it for cutting metal tile trim and it gets the mitres bang on. I’ve cut wood, plastic and gone back to metal and the cut is still the same. Sure I’m not going to be loosing my Bosch saw for finish work but for other stuff where I just need a mitre saw that can be set up in seconds it will do me and the fact it’s so light is great.
I have a Dewalt 12” mitre saw, but like your Bosch, it is not easy to move around! The Evolution is a great little saw for smaller jobs 👍 I’m glad you are happy with yours!

Brillian this helped a lot as it's my first time using a mitre saw! Only thing I will add is that to unlock it you should press down the orange bit at the front at the same time as pulling out the pin at the side. Thanks for the video!

Although the dust extraction port on this is a strange size it actually gets rid of the dust much better than previous models (when it's connected to a vacuum cleaner).

You are welcome. Any of the other Evolution machines hook straight up to my vacuum (Wickes wet and dry vac). I had to use the hose from my Mirka Deros for this machine, but a normal hose should work on this if you use a bit of gaffer tape etc. Perhaps Evolution will bring out an adapter for it at some point.

impressed with the decking board, my cheap mitre saw can only cut 4.5 inch, just short of whats needed, and i have to cut some decking board soon! at least evolution have considered one of the most popular things people want to cut!

I've had one of these for a couple of years, and highly recommend it. I screwed a piece of chipboard underneath it, which I then clamp into a B&D Workmate. As noted in this video, the base will swivel 50 degrees in either direction, which I discovered when I assumed it was set to stop at 45 degrees, and my mitres were way off! Luckily, it was just on practice pieces. Using the saw today, the guard wasn't retracting properly. It turned out a small pivot bolt had worked slightly loose. It just needed tightening up, and I put a drop of thread lock on it for good measure. The work clamp is ok but one day I'll make a toggle clamp to speed up operations.

Impressed by the small foot print , Just lacks a depth stop, which makes it easy to cut half lap joints
I thought you could only make a half lap joint with a sliding mitre saw 🤔

Yes, it is a cracking piece of kit for the money. I remember when I renovated my first house 20 years ago, I looked at buying a chop saw back then but they seemed very expensive compared to today, so I had to use my jigsaw to cut all the timber (which was a real pain)

Hi - Great video and they still sell this model in 2024 and it is £85 at B&Q at the time of writing. I have one question please. Is there a way of altering the blade depth?? - so say go halfway through a piece of 3x2. I realise I can do it by sight but I want to create a channel with a series of parallel cuts all at the same depth. Can it be done?? Cheers, Peter.

It depends, there are too many variables to give a definitive answer.
The blades can often be bought when they are on special offer (screwfix sometimes have deals, so I tend to pick a couple up at once).
You can get a new blade for as little as £24 on Amazon-

No, the maximum cut is 125mm x 55mm (roughly 5" by 2")
You can of course turn the timber over to cut 3.5" by 3.5"
Nice review! Wonder how may square tubes 50mm with 2mm thick walls. Wanted to buy but red some reviews on amazon that say blade got dull with only few cuts of mentioned steel tube. Would appreciate some ones experience with cutting steel with this thing.
I'm not sure, as I do not use it exclusively for cutting metal.
Perhaps the Rage 2 would be a better option, as that eats metal for fun

Looks like they have had to save a bit of cost when producing these, I have the old Rage 3 I think it is, exact same size saw but a better clamp and overall slightly better build quality. Also cost £50 back in the day. Still from the looks of it the new machine is still excellent value for money, very useful for basic work.
The build quality on this model is better than the Rage 3B, which is the older model that this replaces. But as you point out it looks like they have tried to save money on the clamp. The actual end of the clamp that touches the material is ok, as it clamps round, square and flat materials with no problems but it would have been ten times better if it had the sliding clamp like the Rage 3S has. I loved my Rage 3B, it was brilliant for the money and did tons of work before I gave it to a mate!

Yes, it should easily cut that, the maximum cut a 45 degrees is 85mm x 55mm

That's a a great saw as i have it as well, and Screwfix do a great deal on it. i bought it as a quick cut saw as didn't want to carry my Metabo saw outside just to cut some small pieces of wood, so i bought this and i agree with your review that the clamp is fiddly to use, also not too fussed on that dust extraction or the little square knobs to tighten down, i would much prefer round but overall it's a great saw for the price and does a great job in cutting various materials.

i bought thsi from screwfix for 60 last year around june. I made some picture frames. sadly my 45 degree cut didnt cut to a anctual 45 degree as when i placed the two pieces togather it wasnt square. My wood wasnt warped etc. I find the mech a bit too loose, it has slight play in it and slight play can cause big misalignment over long distances. i mounted it properly too.
I'd get in touch with their support, they might have a solution to that problem ;-)

This saw will cut metal with ease, using the supplied blade. As long as you follow the manufacturers recommendations and do not force the blade it will be fine.

what a great saw,i've been wanting to buy the evolution rage 3 circular saw,would you recommend it? i have alot of metal cutting and sometimes in weird positions like cutting previously welded 45 degree joints and cutting stuff free hand so i thought i'd hit 2 birds with one stone and get it instead of getting a chop saw and a big angle grinder for free hand work,what would you say? is it a good choice? also awesome review,i like your honesty :)
If you are cutting a lot of metal and do not need to cut wider material such as skirting boards I would look at one of Evolutions chop saws as they are absolutely brilliant at cutting the things you describe. Here are two of their chop saws-

The R210CMS is a great entry level machine and is very versatile but it is mainly a mitre saw and not a chop saw. The clamping mechanism on the Rage 2 and Rage 4 is much better suited for lots of metal cutting, although this machine will still cut it ;-)

I just realised you said circular saw after typing the first comment.
The Evolution circular saw is great and will cut anything, but I prefer to use a chop saw if possible unless I'm cutting sheet steel etc.
thanks for the reply,both chop saws look really sturdy,but the main reason i'm leaning toward circular saws is that alot of times i need to cut things vertically and not on the floor,honestly at first i wanted to buy the evolution twin blade saw but i got discouraged once i knew they're not making it any more,because my main goal is to replace cutting with my angel grinder ,because of the kickback,and blade breakage,so i thought a metal circular saw is the best choice,but i'll definitely need a chop saw in the future,anyway sorry for taking your time,and thanx alot :)
I didn't realise they were discontinuing the Rage twin! When I tried it I was really happy with what it could do (perhaps it has reliability problems or something). You would have to be really careful using a circular saw for cutting items that are vertical.

yeah it's sad that they discontinued it,ridgid has it's own version of a twin blade saw but the cut depth is only a little over 1" wich is a drawback,for safety i think no matter what i do a circular saw is alot safer than an angel grinder,anyways thanks for your time and replies :)

Difficult to say, the larger chop saws such as the Rage 2 last a long time. I think that 1 evolution blade will outlast 53 abrasive discs!

Have you tried to cut 150mm (5.9") decking boards? wondered if the reach would go to 150mm?
I've not tried that, sorry.
I guess you can always flip the board over.
Sometimes if you put one board on top of another piece of timber, you can cut slightly wider material, as it cuts higher up the blade, where the diameter is wider.

Not sure, as I tend to use the larger Rage 2 for box section. The Rage 2 blade will outlast 20 abrasive discs though, not sure how many cuts that relates to, but it will be a lot.

I bought one but not opened yet. first project is to cut 14.5cm wide wood. can I use this machine to cut most of the way and then flip it round or will the blade gaurd get in the way
Yes, you should be able to flip it over- but please ensure the blade has stopped rotating fully before you flip it ;-)

The clamp is actually pretty effective, if you use it correctly. At first I thought it was poor, but it holds the work really securely.

The only issue I have with this saw is that you can move the clamp, but it's usefulness on the right is limited as it hits the saw motor. Other than that I love this saw.
Yes, the clamping system is not great, although it's not great on a lot of mitre saws. For the money though this is a great piece of kit.

i have just ordered one of these but have now noticed that it needs a transformer is it worth buying one as transformers cost more than the saw
They sell them in 110v and 230V, it is best if you get the 230v one, unless you are working on site, in which case you'll need 110v and the transformer.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the r210cms and the f210cms? apart from the colour, both have the same motor, blade and mitre/bevel.... What am I missing?
The Fury machines are normally cheaper and not built to the same standard as the Rage machines. If you are going to be using it a lot I would get the Rage version. The Fury versions are ok for the occasional DIY job.

No, you would have to flip the board over to cut that. It will just about cut 5" without flipping the board over.

Is it an absolute necessity to wear ear muffs. Cutting some laminate for a couple of rooms. am i just being paronoid or would some eye protection be enough
Definitely, I often wear ear plugs and ear muffs when cutting metal with one of these. I also wear safety glasses and also a full face visor.

Just check the listing of the item that you are buying to make sure.
When you get to the sliding models, such as the R210SMS they do not come with the dust bag, unless you get the R210SMS+ model.

That is not a depth stop, This is copied from the manual-
To prevent the blade from contacting any part of the machines metal base the downward travel of the cutting head can be adjusted. Lower the cutting head and check for any blade contact with the machines base.

It depends what you are cutting.
If you need to mitre skirting boards or larger pieces of wood you need the R210CMS/ Rage 3S or Rage 3DB
The Rage 4 is a chop saw, not a mitre saw. The Rage 4 is excellent for cutting metal or smaller pieces of wood, it should cut much thicker pieces of metal than the R210CMS.

I like evolution products and your reviews. But to say they can cut metal is very misleading. I've had two of their saws and after only a few metal cuts both blades were done as far as metal is concerned. They still cut wood fortunately. Got in touch with evolution about it, who didn't even reply. I've heard their after sales service is rubbish so wasn't surprised. I still like them for cutting wood but unless you have plenty of dosh for replacement blades, use an angle grinder for your metal work.

Ultimate Handyman that was quick :) I tried similar metal to what you show. rebar, threaded steel, angle iron. Didn't force it but both blades were done after only a few cuts. One was a 210, the other the bigger version.

That's really weird as I have cut plenty on my Evolution machines with no problems. The threaded steel was not stainless was it? Stainless will blunt the blade really quickly.
I'm not sure how to compare how many cuts you can do in steel using the smaller saws, but the Rage 2 blade will outlast 20 abrasive discs.
I have used Evolutions support in the past and they were pretty useful, although I did contact them a few years back and their support was not good back then!
Ultimate Handyman no, mild steel. bought my saws last year. They were bought off their eBay outlet and were B grade stock. My simple question was whether the blades were new or not and was this the reason they wore out so quickly. They both looked new but I never got a response from them despite several emails. I wasn't prepared to pay for two new blades in case they went the same way as the originals. In my experience a one pound metal cutting disc for my angle grinder lasts 20 times longer than evolutions blades which last time I looked were around 30 quid each.
My machines have been brilliant, I only ever use the angle grinder as a last resort when I need to cut harder steels etc.
I cut loads of mild steel on my old Rage 3S before upgrading to the Rage 3DB, I cut all the stuff in these videos just with the one blade-

I did knacker the blade after this though by attempting to cut stainless steel with it.

utter crap after 12 months i noticed cuts where not straight so i loosened the the nut at the rear of saw made ajustment with small hex key when i tightened it back up the threads on the housing where stripped.next saw will not be evolution

Dont buy this I have one and the mitre adjusting screw is pathetic. Even when its locked tight it still kicks out from its setting when you press for power. I only noticed when my timber was out of square

No its not faulty just pants bit of kit. I ought to charge evolution for all the work I put right. Be looking for something else now
Absolute junk saw. Had one for a few days before sending it back. Couldn't cut 45 degree angles to save it's life. Swivel base would swivel no matter how tight it was tightened. And the work clamp hangs off the edge of the work base. Just a bad design. And when cutting metal, burrs would fly everywhere.
Gave up and splashed out on a Makita. Just works, safely and precisely.
