- The Evolution R210SMS was sent out for me to test by Evolution tools. This saw is very capable of cutting wood, metal or plastics using the supplied blade. The Evolution R210 SMS (sliding mitre saw) is available at screwfix. The saw blade can also be swapped for a diamond disc which enables the saw to cut masonry with ease.
Excellent video. Lots of information. No music and no BS. Perfect thank you.

Thanks for the comment 👍
Finally, I've bought one. They should be paying you a commission. And many thanks for this simple, patient, and extremely thorough video which has helped me no end.
Picked up a dead one of these Free with stand, changed the brushes and away it went. The laser wire was also loose. However I was unfamiliar with some of the settings it was locked down and angle cut was also locked (didn't have the knob to release lock)and this is the best video I've seen on how to use it. As I say it was locked in the down position and I found the orange locking knob (not on the one in the video) and it would not pull out like it was siezed however in this video I noticed you have to push down to release the tension then it released no problem. Thank you for a great video better than the manual online.
Your vid was brilliant help for me, thanks very much. I saw on reviews ppl were complaining how they never were able to get straight cuts, the last part of the vid is great for explaining this!
I've just bought one of these having watched quite a few video reviews of it and yours is by far the clearest and most practical of them all. Thank you
It is a beauty of a beast in fact I'm so impressed I'm considering getting an R210CMS to take around when I'm doing things.
I'm only a DIYer but I'm retired and my wife hates to see me bored so volunteers me for any odd job she hears needs doing - ah the joys of marriage
You are welcome. I hope you get years of use from it, I love using mine!
Thanks for the comment
Outstanding work, especially explaining how to get the blade perfectly square. Couldn’t ask for a clearer, concise and professional demonstration. Thank you!!

Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman Just set it all up perfectly using a little 5” set square following your instructions - it was quite a way out. The bevel adjustment screw just needed half a turn anti clockwise as the blade had a small gap at the top, but the straight cut needed the left side back rail pulling all the way towards me to get it square. Thanks again!
Just bought one. Thank you for a fantastic video on how to set it up. No waffle and clear instructions.
You are welcome
Thanks for the comment 👍
Just purchased this saw as I thought if it's good enough for Chez, then it's good enough for me. Only a couple of slight adjustments needed to get the saw cutting true and now all working like a charm. Picked up the diamond blade at the same time as I am tiling the kitchen and it is cutting the tiles perfectly. So thanks for the great review. Have a good week.
These saws are so useful, I use mine all the time. I just wish I had a larger workshop, so that I didn't have to keep putting it away all the time!
I hope you get years of use from yours ;-)
Thanks for the comment 👍
Bought one yesterday. Your assembly and setup demo was most helpful.
I hope you get years of use from it ;-)

Great video, just bought one of these, instructions can be a little ambiguous/ unclear, so it’s good to get an easy, “ Ronseal” style set up and run through, I feel confident that I’ve set it up, and can make the required adjustments if needed. Thanks!
I hope you get as much use from yours, as I do. The Evolution saws have helped me tremendously with what I do!

Thank you very much, I have just purchased the plus model of this machine and I was having; what turned out to be as a few simple problems when setting up, after watching your very informative and very well explained video, I was able to sort them
out easily, far better than the manual
Thank you again

I'm glad the video helped, these are great saws once they are set up. I hope you get years of use from it.

An excellent explanation. Saw and stand arrived today so this video will be very useful. Thank you for providing such a comprehensive guide.

Great video, very helpful, especially the part where you show how to adjust the blade and make it perfectly square. I would never have known how to do that, many thanks. Just need to find one at a good price now 🙂
I'm glad the video helped

Helpful. I recently bought one and after assembling it I needed a fine-tune.🙏 I wasn't getting a perfect tuning between the fence and the blade at the back. I removed the fence and noticed some minor imperfections on the bottom of the fence. A little sanding solved the problem. I got perfect tuning.
Superb demo, straight to the point with no waffling on. Thanks.

This is one of the most versatile sliding mitre saws on the market and was kindly sent by Evolution for me to try out.

I've got the small machine R210CMS, I only use it for cutting metal, very handy, small & quite rugged enough to put in the van when i'm going to be cutting things like shelving strips & bolts etc...
Yes, that is a very handy saw ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Bought mine and used it for the first time today. While it states the max cutting depth is 65mmish I found it can cut a little deeper at 74mm. Glad I went for this middle version as it was on sale for the same price as the smaller model.
👍
Great video. Wish I'd seen it before going through the instructions. I am still trying to work out how to use the long clamp as it seems less than secure at present
Excellent tutorial and very easy to follow.

Thanks for watching the videos and thanks for the comment ;-)
Great straight forward easy to understand instructions, unlike what you get from evolution
On the strength of your recommendation, I have just purchased one. Interestingly, the plastic extensions and the place into which they fit are no longer left and right handed. They are symmetrical - no square shoulder on one side.
This is my most used mitre saw; it’s been a life saver for me. Evolution are always improving their tools! I hope you get many years of use from it 👍
Great video, perfectly explained and demonstrated. Thanks!

I bought mine a few weeks ago after watching this, bought engineers squares but was bang on after building it up. Brilliant video and far, far, far better than the yankee doodle dandy videos, cheers for taking the time and uploading it and edting, takes longer to edit than set the saw up. cheers.

I keep watching your vids and bought the saw then watched the vid! Must be subconscious purchase! LOL Followed your instructions to put it together rather than manual. Cheers! Happy new year!
Its a great saw for the money, I hope you get years of use from it ;-)
Thanks for the comment and Happy new year
I only need to figure out now how to make a tool to measure treads and rises. Not much made in UK.
That's a good cut. Looks perfect. Bob on. Can't wait to use mine.
Hope you like it!
Looking forward to getting my saw and will no doubt be referring to this excellent video for the adjustments it'll need (hopefully not🤞) TFP👍
Very useful video, Your video helped me make my decision. Thank you.

Fantastic video. Thanks very much. I'm off to boy mine right now.
This is a great saw for the money- very versatile!
Thanks for the comment 👍
I have the 210 non sliding version which i only use for cutting up wood that i know have nails in, eg pallet wood or for cutting some metal etc as i don't want to ruin the blades on my Metabo Saws that i have.
Happy New Year to you and your Family, hope you have a great 2018 and keep up with these great videos, that you are doing.
Barry (Wirral)
Thanks for the comment, Barry
All the best for the new year ;-)
Great video and needed as the assembly manual is a pita to use. A couple of things I noticed. After I completed assembling is slight play in the rotary table about 0.5 degree maybe less. I'm a little worried this will effect the quality and precision of cuts. Secondly lots of finger prints smudges on the rotary table possibly from the assembly line and not I'm hoping from being a demo model somewhere.
Mine is great for the jobs I do. Have you tried it yet?
Thanks for the comment
Great video. The best I have seen.
Wow, thanks!
Great video and review as always, what a fantastic tool so versatile and looks very well made.

I wear that jacket all the time LOL, I have never been one for spending a lot of money on clothes- I'd rather spend the money on tools ;-)

Just boght one today, some great tips there, cheers.

thinking of getting one is it still going ok
I seem to remember that galvanised steel can give off poisonous fumes and dust when cut. Maybe the reason for the makers not recommending? Great video BTW. I just got one of these for my birthday so looking forward to getting to work with it.
Yes, you can get galvanic poisoning from grinding or welding galvanised steel, but this saw produces chips, which are not vapourised or atomised etc.
You would not believe how easily these saws cut through mild steel, but they struggle with galvanised steel. I can’t get my head around how a coating of a soft metal (zinc), makes cutting the steel so much more difficult!
I hope you get years of use from the saw, I've been using mine daily for the last few weeks on a kitchen install.
Thanks for the comment
@@ultimatehandymanmaybe run a grinder over the galvanising coating first,

Happy New Year Ultimate, great videos.👍👍
Thanks Matt.

great video cheers,I`m thinking of buying
this 1 or the EVOLUTION R185SMS for DIY
what you think ????
I'd get the 210 version, that extra few mm depth of cut makes all the difference, for not much more money 👍
Ok so I am looking at getting a Mitre saw but note that this saw review is from 5 years ago. Has there been any better saw, for smilar money on the market since your fab review of this one?
I think they have updated this mitre saw, but the new version will be as good, or better than this one. Evolution are always improving their tools 👍
When checking against fence do we need to check on both sides?I'm getting it ok on left side as you showed but when checking on right side it's not square.tiok a straight edge to check if back fence is warped but it's ok
That is weird, if the fence is straight at both sides, the blade should also be square to the fence at both sides
🤔
Thanks for the comment 👍
When I got mine a while ago I read the instructions carefully with regards to mounting it on the stand. It said to remove REMOVE the 4 rubber feet before bolting the saw to the two brackets. Unfortunately, this meant the saw sat a little low on the attached rails coursing the dedicated stop to hit the rails on each side, meaning I couldn't swing the saw round completely to the 45degree stop. I unbolted the saw and reinserted the 4 rubber feet and now the saw clears the rails so I can now swing the saw unimpeded to the 45degree stop.
So, if you do get one of these saws with the stand, I would ignore that part of the instructions.
That's strange, as I removed the rubber feet and never had that problem.
Thanks for the info though 👍
@@ultimatehandyman Yep strange one indeed. My neighbour bought the same setup as me and never had an issue with the saw sitting too low after removing the 4 rubber feet. I did check and he set it up exactly the same as me. Never mind, just one of life's little mysteries I guess.
At least it works- that's the main thing.
I hope you get years of use from it, I love my Evolution mitre/chop saws 👍
@@ultimatehandyman Yes indeed. Now working absolutely fine, I am very impressed with this saw as well. Just made a casket for a beloved pet dog that passed away. Honestly, the things I get asked to make. Happy New Year.
Absolutely awesome video once again. Great thorough review and some very good, easy to understand information.
How did you attach the R210SMS to the saw stand rails? When I had the Rage3S I used the provided bolts (with the square shanks and dome heads) going up through the rails and then up through the saw base/feet.
I then used the washers, spring washers and wingnuts provided.
However, the new R210SMS has recessed hex holes. Is there a different way of connecting the rails with hex nuts?
Thank you again for your great vids. Hope you don’t mind me asking for advice
😊
Thanks, I attached it using some cap head stainless steel bolts that I had in my toolbox, as I have a mixed selection of nuts/bolts and washers. If I remember rightly I used M6 bolts.
Thanks for the comment
Hi, I just bought the evolution r210sms + (my first miter saw). But I have encountered a problem the blade has a slight play I think it is due to the hex bolt securing the blade to the motor, the bolt has quite a bit of play compared to the thread of the motor block and even if I tighten it the wobble remains, however the cuts are precise at least on the wood. I was wondering if yours also had the same problem? Sorry for my English
Hi, No mine does not have any problems like that.
Are the flange faces in good condition?
Not sure what would cause that problem 🤔
Have a Happy New Year mate and keep up the great work!!
Joe
Thanks Joe
All the best for 2018
Proper bloke and a proper explanation, how would you compare this to a dewault at £199.95. They seem pretty similar to me.
Do you have a model number for the Dewalt please, and I'll check it out ?
@@ultimatehandyman DEWALT DWS773-GB 216MM SINGLE-BEVEL SLIDING COMPOUND MITRE SAW 240V, looks pretty much the same spec'. I am not full time pro' anymore but a bit of a fussy bastard, LOL, but I do like things right and I know setting tools up like you have done is very, very important, most traders just use them straight from the box, this is wrong.
It depends what you are going to be cutting!
The Dewalt mitre saws are really good, I have the larger DWS 780 and can't fault it- ruclips.net/video/6_OYbGlPyOM/видео.html
But the Evolution is a much different machine as it can easily cut metal with the same blade, plus you can fit a diamond blade to it for cutting through bricks/tiles etc.
If you need to cut accurate pieces of timber I would get the Dewalt, but for versatility I would get the Evolution. For what I do the Evolution is perfect for everyday use.
Thanks for the comments
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Could you please advise me on how to raise and lower the head it seems to be locked in the down position.
There is a locking pin at the back, you need to press down on the head of the machine and then pull out the locking pin.
Thanks for the comment
Keep that manual handy there bud XD
Thanks for an awesome video! Let's I want to cut 40x40mm square tubing. How many cuts can the blade handle before it's worn out?
Not sure to be honest, If I mention a figure, it would be a complete guess.
I think evolution did a test once and a single blade on the Rage 2, and a single blade outlasted something like 53 abrasive discs!
If you are cutting a lot of metal, the Rage 2 is an absolute beast- ruclips.net/video/Orx676NXyws/видео.html&t

@@ultimatehandyman awesome info, thbaks a lot. For universal use. Which model would you recommend? 210sms?
@@Dibulok You are welcome ;-)
It depends what you are cutting. The 210SMS is fine for most people, but if you need to cut larger materials the 255SMS is better.
@@ultimatehandyman ok awesome. I'm looking for a un7versal cutter to have around the farm. Anything from steel square tubing to wood.
Hi, I was fortunate enough to receve one of these for Christmas! It is the "R210 SMS+" version (not sure what he "+" is though!) Unfortunately I have made a slight error in assembly - I put the slide rails in upside down (not clear from their assembly video and it is a black handle at the end not orange so the "evolution" logo was not so obvious). In fact the handle points up, not down as in your version and the one on their video - so it was a bit confusing. Not a disaster as still operates OK but of course the cable grip is on the oposite side. I was hoping I would be able to push in the locking rods and remove the cutting head in order to remove the rails and put them in the right way upt - but it doesn't want to come off. Any thoughts on how I can rectify my silly mistake? Great video - I will certainly follow the steps to ensure accurate set up.
I don't have the saw in front of me, but if I remember rightly there are two spring loaded pins that locate through 2 holes, you would need to depress both of the pins at the same time, whilst pulling on the cutting head. You should then be able to remove it and turn the slide rails over.
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman Thanks! It was definately a 2-person job (one pushing the two spring pins and one pulling the head off) - but it worked!
Just ordered one cheers
I hope you get years of use from it ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Can it cut angle iron
I could really do with a reliably accurate square like you have. Could you recommend one? Thanks

Just bought one today, for my shed project, won’t be getting it out of the box just yet, how’s yours doing fella?
It's doing fine. I use mine regularly for most jobs 👍
@@ultimatehandyman good to hear, stay lucky!😉
Very easy to follow cheers
I have just bought this saw today to do some stairs and decking in the morning. I have just put it together and noticed that the blade has a fair bit of play in it even thought it’s correctly mounted and tightened. Is this normal?
No, that is not normal.
If there is play, it will not cut accurately. Have you tried cutting with it?
@@ultimatehandyman no not yet. If you touch the blade with your fingers it probably moves half a mil or something. Should it be absolutely rock solid? Thanks for the quick response 👍🏼
@@TheStockyOne It's not something I have ever tried, but I'd imagine that if the blade is not rigid, the machine is not going to cut properly.
I can't remember their being any movement in any of the machine that I have had.
i am struggling with mine, not long had it but it wont cut through to the back of a 5 inch fence board
It should easily cut through wood 🤔
Are you using the original blade?
Is it fitted the correct way around?
I’ve been using mine for years and have cut metal and wood with no problems 🤔
Nice job, I do have to use the word Flange more in 2018.....Oh and Happy New Year to you :)
Thanks Ian, Happy new year ;-)
Hi what is the difference between this model and the R210SMS+ model Evolutions are now selling? Also, do you think this saw would handle cutting a 3 x 3 fence post? Thanks
The + models normally just have more stuff with them, such as a dust bag and additional clamp etc.
It won't cut straight through a 3*3 post, you would have to flip it over, as the maximum depth of cut is 65mm
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman thanks for the reply. If I flip it over, would the cut be clean, do you think that is a reasonable compromise if otherwise a R210 would cope with everything else I need to cut? thanks
@@angwer2940 Yes, I have flipped work over plenty of times, but if for example you are a fencing contractor and install hundreds of 3*3 posts, you would be better off with a larger machine.
I agree this is great saw but at 45 degree mine catches on the stand. Excellent video thanks
I didn't think this saw was for sale yet, are you sure you have the R210SMS ?
Thanks for the comment
Bought one today 👍

Thanks for the comment 👍
what do you call the nut that holds the blade on ? and where would I get one , mine is broken . thanks
I noticed on the first cut in actual speed that there is a lot of time before the blade slows down, is there no friction brake ?
No, I don't think there is a brake on this model or the older Rage3 but the Rage 3DB is braked (if I remember rightly)
Thanks for the comment
I just wish Manufacturers would realize we need double bevel facility because it’s a pain in the backside if not. Great review though Chez. 👍🤓👍
I think it's all down to pricing Wayne, I would imagine that they have to get this model to suit a certain budget and for many people this saw will be fine. I'm guessing that they will be replacing the Rage 3DB at some point with a saw that has the double bevel feature. All the best for 2018 mate ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Any advice on how to cut bored wood? I'm doing skirting at the moment and neither the front nor back are flat so it's a nightmare getting sharp corners.
Good review like always. I'm in the market for a mitre saw and been looking at the evolution DIY range, would the above be good for the diyer?
Thanks, yes this saw will suit trade use or DIY use. It is much better than their Fury range, but obviously more expensive.
Thanks for the comment
Thanks for this. The manual that comes with it is hopeless !
Glad it helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
But will it cut sleepers 4" depth
No, you might need a 12” mitre saw to cut through sleepers.
Something like this- ruclips.net/video/6_OYbGlPyOM/видео.html&t
@@ultimatehandyman thank you very handy. The one I just bought is a Evolution 210 sms
It would be cool to see how to attach it to a work bench
I've done a video on making an adaptor plate for the Rage2, that might give you some ideas- ruclips.net/video/QDAzUzQBGZw/видео.html
Thanks for the comment
That was a perfect guide. As you probably could tell from my comment I'm a complete novice. If i hadn't seen that video, i would've bought a separate stand just for the circular saw.
Thanks, if you get an Evolution mitre saw stand the evolution mitre saw will fit straight onto it. I only made the adapter plate so that I could fit the Rage 2 chop saw to the stand.

Can I wet cut stone on this device. Jasper, granite etc?
These would be rough non regular shaped stones
I'm not sure, as I have never tried it.
I guess it would not be a problem, as long as you don't use too much water and keep the water well away from the electrics.
Would you say it was better than the rage 3-s?
Yes, it is easier to change the blade and also has somewhere to store the power cord/flex. They have probably also made improvements that are not that obvious unless you know about them.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
How does this compare to the Rage models.
I believe this is replacing the Rage 3. It is easy to set up and much easier to change the blade plus it's got storage for the power cord. I'd still like to see a longer power lead, perhaps made from a more flexible material but the saw itself is fantastic ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman Thanks for reply. I have a rage and can't seem to get the blade to stay square. It is the original blade but seems to flex. Only cutting wood. 8x2 max
MuddyBootz try a replacement wood blade and reducing ring will usually be needed. Try Saxon brand online. Also there is some videos on how to set your blade square online.
You are welcome, I've never had such problems yet but doing as JuiceBanger1 suggests might help.

Would you say that a mitre saw is easy enough for a DIY amateur to use? Note, I say amateur, not idiot. ;) Am very careful and fastidious. Keen to build lots of items for the garden (raised beds, cages, compost bins, etc and feel this would be ideal for all the wood cutting needed. Many thanks.

Just bought this off the back of his video:- the fixing clamp is useless for cutting bevels in one direction because if pressed onto the plastic extensions on the left side, it lifts the timber at the cutting point . If clamped closer to the blade it interferes with the cutting angle. Very disappointed. There will be times when clamping on this side is necessary. Something should still work despite the price tag.
Sometimes you just have to step back and find a solution, I also own the Dewalt 12” sliding mitre saw and using any of these two saws is difficult for bevel cuts, due to the clamp. Only last week I cut some 4 inch plastic skirting and had to use a sacrificial piece of timber on top, to be able to hold the material whilst cutting it. 👍
So this is the Rage 3 replacement for 2018 I can only assume...
Yes, I think this goes on sale soon. They have made some improvements over the Rage 3 and renamed it.
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman Any massive differences in your eyes? Been reasonably impressed with my Rage 3
If I remember rightly it is much easier to change the blade on the newer model, it also has storage space for the Hex key for changing the blade and also something to wrap the power cord around. The handle position has also been changed from vertical to horizontal. The Rage 3 is a great saw, I often use the Rage 3DB and it is my mitre saw of choice when I'm in my workshop.
I'm sure the guys at evolution are working on more improvements all the time.
