    Thank you doctor for this video! I unfortunately had eating disorders since the age of 12 until 25 and mostly threw up 5-7 times a day age 16-23. I am 28 now and have all sorts of problems with food intolerances and allergies and IBS. I wish someone showed me this when I was younger. It would have helped me a lot with my battle.

    I have Anorexia and Bullimia and I come across binge and purge sessions at least once a week.
    I keep experiencing chest burns after purging and it usually lasts a few days afterwards. Sometimes I get out of the bathroom losing my balance and shaking and definitely always light headed. It’s difficult to breath even and I keep getting muscle cramps after exercising.

    In the beginning, it was oretty healthy. I ate a balanced diet and excercised.
    Then i started noticing i feared food. I starved myself for hours and counted the bites of food i ate.
    Now its come to a point where i self induce vomit if i feel like i eat a little extra... and now im not sure if its good.

      It was similar for me also. I became bed bound a little over a month ago due to a bad flu for two weeks where I lost 7kg. Now, I don't enjoy food as much and am conscious of eating, immediately feeling nausea afterwards.
      In that state, the key is portion control. Try not to eat a lot at once, just small amounts throughout the day and know your cut-off point 😊

It isn’t worth it at that point. Not eating anything especially throwing it up after in the end you will only gain weight because once you do eat again normally your body isn’t gonna take it well and you will gain more.

    What happens when people eat non food items please? Like those with pica who eat wall plaster

    • @GutDr
      @GutDr  3 года назад +4

      Pica is an interesting condition. It’s been linked to obsession-compulsion disorder (OCD). In some cases it can be due to micronutrient deficiencies which then lead to cravings for particular substances. See link: www.gutdr.com/healthy-gut-understanding-food-cravings/
      Pica’s name comes from the Latin name for the magpie - ‘pica pica’ because magpies like to pick up and eat random objects.
      Now Anne-Marie there’s particular names given to different forms of pica. For example the term given to the eating of dust is called coniophagia, the eating of cigarette ashes is called stachtophagia whilst the eating of ice and snow is known as pagophagia.
      What we’re referring to here - the eating of paper is known as xylophagia. In addition to paper xylophagia can also encompass the eating of wood and toothpicks. There’s not that much known about it because it is rare. However in 2014 a forensic medicine journal did publish an account of an autopsy by a person who died from the eating of wood. This result in quite significant damage to their gut as wood was found lodged in the esophagus, stomach and small intestine. There were also haemorrhages found throughout the body.
      In general pica can lead to nutrient deficiencies because other foods aren’t eaten, it can lead to more susceptibility to parasites e.g. from eating dirt, it can lead to toxicity e.g. from eating lead paint and it can lead to gut problems. When it comes to gut problems one obvious one is the potential for blockages. People that eat hair regularly (a condition called tricophagia) for example can develop a big ball of hair (known as a bezoar) that’s often impacted somewhere in the gut and can lead to obstruction. Obstruction by foreign objects can lead to rupture of the gut (the medical term is perforation) and that can lead to sepsis and death. These foreign objects can even go the wrong way i.e. into the lungs resulting in aspiration pneumonia and death.
      Hmm ... I should probably do a future video on pica if this is of interest to our viewers.

    • @GutDr
      @GutDr  3 года назад

      @Denis Ursu Hi Denis are you referring to pica?

    • @GutDr
      @GutDr  3 года назад

      @Denis Ursu Hi Denis have a look at my vomiting animation which goes through the mechanism of vomiting. This video on bulimia nervosa does go through some of the gastrointestinal complications of chronic vomiting, some of which can be quite serious.

    • @GutDr
      @GutDr  3 года назад

      @Denis Ursu Hi Denis not sure why it's not allowing comments - it's a RUclips issue and not from this channel. I've had a few other people raise the same problem so it's very frustrating to me :-(

    • @GutDr
      @GutDr  3 года назад

      @Denis Ursu If you mean by sticking a finger or two down the throat to induce vomiting then yes that is one way that can be done. This is done by eliciting the gag reflex (also known as the pharyngeal reflex) which sends signals to the brainstem - repeated behaviour in a very sensitised individual can certainly prompt retching and vomiting.
      However it’s important to note that inducing vomiting can lead to some unpleasant outcomes. We talked about these in the bulimia video but just to recap dehydration, damage to the lining of the throat, mouth and oesophagus from acid contents, possible aspiration of vomit into the lungs are some of the potential problems.
