The human body is amazing. The reason why vomiting is preceeded by increased salivation is that our saliva contains a substance which is acid resistant thus protecting our teeth from exposure to stomach acid during vomiting. A really clever natural mechanism. 😊👍🏻

I’m severely emetophobic. One Thanksgiving, my brother got sick with a stomach virus and he was vomiting every five minutes. I cooked a huge meal and I wouldn’t eat any of it because of fear and anxiety of catching the virus. Everyone else was fine, eating, laughing at me because I disinfected repeatedly after every vomiting event. I felt so bad for my brother, but he was a good sport about it. Needless to say, my consistent disinfecting prevented anyone else from contracting the virus.

But seriously, emetophobia has got to be one of the worst fears.
I’d rather shit forever than puke once tbh.

@@SatouKazuma oh well- 😑 I mean non stop.
Vomiting may be helpful, but it's always been one of the more unpleasant experiences for me. The first unpleasant event tends to be nausea which is felt in the stomach, which includes a very strong feeling of clamminess and sense of disorientation. My brain tells me "Uh-oh! Here it comes! I think I'm gonna puke!"
The actual act of vomiting seems pretty difficult for me because it also interrupts normal breathing and seems to come in waves of stomach cramping. Between those waves is a brief moment when I can quickly grab a brief breath of air before the next round of hurling. I also find myself thinking, "Nooo, not again!" There's not much you can to to stop it. All I can do is hope it will end soon.
The most serious experience I've had involved feeling strange for no particular reason, clammy, my forehead sweating. I felt dizzy, and felt hot one moment then cold the next. Then came the feeling that I was going to vomit. This was all completely unexpected. It reached a point that I was taken by ambulance to a regional hospital where it was determined I had experienced a serious bout of atrial fibrillation. I spent several days in the ICU. I've never had a problem like that before or since, however, I do have to take medication to keep my blood pressure at a normal rate, and to prevent my blood from clotting. I go into a clinic once a month to have my blood checked. I follow the requirements faithfully as part of my daily routine. I'll have to do this for the rest of my life. While I'd rather not have to do this, I do so because I like being alive more than the prospect of being dead. In this case, vomiting was a warning signal of something potentially wrong. I didn't waste any time in getting medical assistance. When you have to vomit, it's a warning signal not to be taken lightly. Your body is telling you that something is seriously wrong. As unpleasant as it is, there's a reason for vomiting.
i feel like i could suffocate while puking
what if u don’t take no air and try to wait till the whole thing is over
I remember the last time I spewed. It was late summer 2008. I was kinda traumatized. I’ve been careful with my eating since that day. And over a decade later I have kept a spotless record. I too am an emetophobiac. I wouldn’t mind vomiting if there wasn’t so much discomfort in it.
Me too! I some reason don’t mind the actual process of vomiting. Except foods chunks 🤢. But it’s before the vomiting that gets me. The nausea and the impending doom that I will get sick. Emetophobia sucks.
@@lyndseyrenee4147 Same. Funny thing it's been I think a couple of years since I only puke bile not food

I used to have a terrible fear of it but now not so much. It's not pleasant but the fear of it is so much worse than the vomiting itself.
Now I actually find it pretty interesting. It's such a clever evolutionary tool our bodies have. Sensing something bad so the body is like "nope, let's get rid of this!"

I can remember the last time I ever threw up as a kid, it was when I was 7 years old and on the playground at reassess, when suddenly, I stopped and started to breath heavy, and then started gagging, and then puked right on the soccer field! It was really gross, and I felt so terrible I had to go to the nurse, and she called my mom to come take me home. I had to stay out of school for about ten days to make sure I wasn't seriously sick. It was really hard to stay home, and my tummy hurt so much! It hurt so bad, I started to cry a lot, but my mom told me to hold duckies, and to just reast, it helped, but I cried going to sleep from the pain. But she sang songs about God to me, and it really worked! I definitely learned a good lesson, and I think it made me even stronger then before! Rain.
Last time I threw up was years ago but it felt like i was shitting out my mouth.
Absolutely loads of it in one long, thick and heavy mouth dump.
The anticipation from the preceding nausea is worse than the event which is oddly satisfying as soon as it starts coming out.

Incredibly unpopular opinion: I’ve always enjoyed the feeling of throwing up. I hate the nausea and what ever leads up to me throwing up, but the actual event is oddly satisfying and I often anticipate it when I have a hangover. I know it’s weird. And no I’m not bulimic.

Love you The Gut Dr. Brilliantly explained .
I read somewhere the salivation phase serves as protection coating our teeth enamel from the coming stomach acids
Hi Horus that is very true. Saliva in addition to its other functions like flushing away pathogens (such as bacteria) can act as a buffer against acid by increasing pH with the help of bicarbonate, phosphate, and other ions. And in regards to enamel we know that acid-softened enamel is able to reharden after exposure to saliva, as saliva is able to provide calcium and phosphate ions necessary for remineralisation.
Yeh saliva also helps prevent theeth from cavity ,gigavitis and sores by remineralization
Very interesting......how much work actually goes into this....The human body is amazing...

I've been lucky enough to never throw up in my entire life, so I have no idea what emesis feels like. Strangely enough, I have developed emetophobia from this unknown. It sucks to have any kind of phobia. It's hard to get rid of and it uneccesarily impacts your life negatively.
It’s very common for those who have never or rarely vomited to develop a fear. It’s unpleasant. But nausea is certainly the worst part. At times, you feel like it’s never going to end as it’s such an unpleasant feeling but I grew up with emetephobia and what eventually got rid of it was drinking and being sick went drunk. And then even choosing to throw up to avoid a hangover. That was me taking control. And what I learned from it is being sick isnt scary but nausea really does suck
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE I HAVE VOMMITED LIKE 10 TIMES IN MY LIFE THAT I REMEMBER

on christmas eve i had shrimp and it gave me food poisoning which was a nightmare. like the entire night (from 8 to 12) i was constantly either throwing up, nauseous, or for the last 2 hours of it retching. like i hadnt eaten much so it only took like 3 vomit sessions per se to empty my stomach but then for the last 2 hours i was constantly retching and what would come out was either mucus, liquid, or literally nothing. honestly i thought with the amount of mucus i was throwing up that acid would be able to burn my stomach and i would die lmao
Omg that sounds awful
@@tanqnikolova8343 i was vomiting until i went to bed, and when i woke up afterwards i was mostly okay. i was still a bit nauseous and i had a headache but by the time 24 hours had passed since i got food poisoning i didnt have any symptoms anymore.
Nice story, Btw i love shrimp I’m glad it has never gave me food poisoning
What happens with "Dry heaving", in which nothing comes up?
That’s a great question Steve and it comes to what we define as retching.
Retching is best defined as that period rhythmical heaving caused by the contraction of the large breathing muscle (diaphragm) and abdominal muscles. We know that during retching the entire pharynx, larynx, oesophagus and stomach is moving up and down in synchrony with the movement of the diaphragm. What retching allows is to mix stomach contents with contents refluxed from the small intestine. This mixing actually makes stomach contents less acidic and “buffers it”. Retching also gives the stomach contents a bit of a “kick” or momentum before the act of vomiting itself.
Retching is triggered by the emetic (vomiting) reflex which we’ve covered in the animation on vomiting. So anything that can trigger that emetic reflex can also bring on retching which can be “dry”.
Without knowing the details of your particular condition I can speak in general terms about what can be done for retching. Finding a cause is important and you can see your local doctor to go through some investigations. Looking for conditions that can activate the emetic reflex is important such as electrolyte disturbances, constipation, chronic respiratory diseases and recurrent cough or other rarer conditions like dystonia. And if that is not successful your local physician may trial you on anti-emetics which can help block the emetic reflex.

Some thing Gut Dr did not mention. Last time sick I woke in the night feeling strongly I wanted vomit and managed to get the few steps to the bathroom loo before heaving so hard I strained the muscles around my diaphragm. But the strain was so devastating I evacuated my bowl. This problem repeated itself every twenty minutes or so until 5am in the morning. By then I could no longer stand without great effort. It took me two days to fully recover.
Amazing animation

Fascinating. Once I had food poisoning and I swear I threw up my stomach lining. It was evil and I’m low key terrified of this ever happening again. It knocked me straight into the emergency room. Del taco. Never again.
This was very fascinating to see that the process to vomit takes so many different parts of the body to work together. It's amazing how much is happening under the hood.
I was constantly vomitting after being diagnosed with dengue. It was horrible. The feeling of throwing up doesn't bother me. Its the mess and if in public embarrassment.
I hate the part where your stomach starts contracting non stop for about 10 seconds, it is such a weird feeling
I have emetophobia. It means i have a huge fear of throwing up.How dont you afraid of the feeling of throwing up ? And also,i know doing this in public is unpleasant but this is not an insulting thing.
I'm emetophobic and I think that it may be a delayed reaction after being made fun of by my classmates when I puked with a virus when I was 10.
I think the scariest aspect of vomiting is the social aspect. Nobody wants to feel the embarrassment of vomiting in front of others. It'd be like shitting your pants in front of other people. The difference, I guess, is that we shit consistently whether we want to or not. It's a bit easier to avoid the prospect of vomiting everyday. I used to be emetophobic, to the point of where I'd get panic attacks when I suspected I may be getting sick, until one day I got sick again. Vomiting in the comfort and confinement of my own bathroom, and surviving, and actually feeling better after, made me get over it. Of course, I put up a big dramatic episode before it happened. My poor mother, having to calm me down before I finally hurled. Life is interesting isn't it?

@@mahmoodsami3132 I'm from India and while I can say that most places have clean water for the juices, I too avoid having fresh juice outside. I have gone through a vomiting incident where I clearly remember consuminga juice, which my cousin also had and both of us got a bout of vomiting after that. As an emetophobic I read the comments before watching and it was interesting to see a lot of other emetophobes also watched this haha..
Obviously nausea is connected with the brain but it was surprising to see how complex it was, and some say to control nausea using "mind power" which I have done myself I guess (as I have not vomited since I was 11, I am now 44), and have also tried different ways of trying to supress the nausea and found it helps to press down on the depressed area of the middle of my chest just above the stomach with my thumb. Is this because I am pinching the oesophagus shut then? Or is there a pressure point there?
Anyhoo, your videos are very educational/informative and explain things well.
Thank you for your kind comment. I don’t know the specific region you’re describing without more a more detailed examination but it is possible that you’re referring to the solar plexus region. If so there is a rich supply of nerves there known as the celiac plexus. It could be that by applying pressure that you are inducing a form of “celiac plexus block”.This is known to not only help with upper abdominal pain but can also increase gastric motility. The latter may be the mechanism explaining how it’s helping to suppress nausea.

Nobody knows when I throw up because I don't make a sound when doing it you just hear the splatter of the contents falling out.
