I’ve seen the movie and I think I know what Chris is when he says character change their motivations and I actually disagree with him.
    Spoilers:
Unless there is someone I forgot I’m pretty sure he is talking about the groom and the brother. The brother had a change of heart when he saw the dumb women praise her kid for shooting Grace. He realized this cycle with never end and he has to be the one to stop it. He even says so later, something like “I always thought someone was going to end this. I didn’t think it would have to be me.” The groom also had a conversation with his mother where she basically said that she knows in the end he will pick her over Grace. The reason he turns on Grace in the end is because she killed his mom, proving the mother right. The motivation for these characters twists is hinted at.

It's not that just she killed his mother but also when he asked her if she's gonna be with him after all of this, she kinda didn't answer so he realized that if he can't have her, no one will. It's like he viewed her as someone that SHOULD be on his side (as Dead Meat Podcast quote it) like a piece to him instead of a living human being. He's the type of person who thinks of Grace as a possession.Although he acts "good" at the first half/ second half of the movie, there's still hints about his true nature such as him not telling Grace before the wedding about what's gonna happen when in fact, his brother, Daniel did tell his wife about the consequences even before they got married; him saying to Grace that if they didn't go the wedding through his family, they would've died (because he said that some of his family members died shortly after the wedding).
Plus when his mother talked to him about knowing Grace, we were hinted that in the back of his mind lies his very evil nature. We saw that when he said that when he killed the goat, it felt normal to him. It's probably because of the way his mother praised himm and Daniel even though they've done evil acts which is mirrored when the cokehead sister told her son Georgie that she's proud of him when he shot Grace.

To be honest, I think you're correct that this is the motivation the filmmakers are trying to show you on screen. However, I think that the subtext of the movie is actually about classism.
The Le Domas family could be seen as a metaphor for the upper class in general. If someone wants to marry in (upward social mobility) they need to do it on the family's terms, according to the rules THEY set. Sometimes this means being hunted for sport and sacrificed.
They believe that hierarchy is the natural order, and therefore whoever is on top of that hierarchy MUST be there for a reason, and therefore all of the problems this causes is a result of certain people within the hierarchy not being where they're supposed to be. Somebody didn't follow the rules; somebody cut in line. Even the people who married into the family grow to believe this, and they ultimately accept the traditions that the Le Domas' use as barriers to entry because allowing just anyone to join the upper class could spell doom for them all. Nothing is worse than the possibility of moving DOWN the food chain.
Grace is a metaphor for the working class. She isn't interested in the family's fortune; she doesn't want to go on murder rampage; she just wants to survive and escape. For the most part, she doesn't kill anybody except for the mother and maybe the butler (another member of the working class, pitted against one of their own). Most of the people who die up until the end are domestics that the family accidentally kills through their own ineptitude.
Alex is a metaphor for capitalism. Grace thinks they're in loving relationship in the beginning, but ultimately he betrays her in favor of the upper class. Why? Well sure she killed mommy, but that wasn't his actual reason. She circumvented the hierarchy on her own terms and survived despite the odds; she broke the rules; she cut in line - and for that, she had to die because she's upsetting the natural order. When he says: "you're not going to want to be with me anymore after this, are you?" it's essentially capitalism saying to the working class: "Now that you've seen how we play the game, you're not going to cook our food, or run our factories, or buy our products anymore, are you?"

Seventeen different versions of Grace's wedding dress were created by costume designer Avery Plewes to show the progress of Grace's night and how her clothes correspond to her attitude.
During rehearsals a producer was accidentally stabbed with a prop knife, wielded by Adam Brody. Brody was playing around and thought the knife was retractable. The producer received 8 stitches to his shoulder, returning to the set later that day.
Despite appearing as an American in many of her film roles, Samara Weaving is Australian.
With the exception of Grace, Daniel and Becky, the rest of the Le Domas including Fitch and the butler Stevens were played by Canadians.
They had to teach Samara Weaving how to drive, or at least how to look like she's driving.
The nail that goes through Grace's hand is CG, and they were worried about selling it until they watched Weaving's performance.
The MPAA requested they translate the Latin used during the sacrificial ceremony so they could properly rate the film.
The names Le Domas and Le Bail are anagrams of Asmodel and Belial of the Ars Goetia, respectively.
The very end resembles the end of Heathers (1988)
The fight between Grace and Becky was filmed on the first day of shooting, and Weaving accidentally struck her with the prop brick. "We all thought she was going to walk away."
In this film, Samara Weaving plays someone running from devil worshipers who wish to sacrifice her. This is a reversal of her role in The Babysitter (2017) where she played a devil worshiper hunting someone to sacrifice
At 48 mins.) The insert of the dumbwaiter gears, is actually gears from London's Big Ben clock tower.
BODY COUNT: 15 (Charles, Clara, Tina, Dora, Stevens, Daniel, Becky, Aunt Helene, Fitch, Charity, Emilie, Gabe, Georgie, Tony, Alex).

    • @StevenZephyc
      @StevenZephyc 5 лет назад +3

      Spoiler alert:
IMO the characters are really good, even if they are on the stereotype side. Most of their emotion (except the husband ALEX, who has shit development) were what you would expect. )
And the humors were real good, just when you expect something to happen they turned it around, and a lot of them actually a subvert on audience expectations, like when the golddigger fires a crossbow, she shoots way off mark because, duh, it's an ancient crossbow and she never used one before. There's also the security camera thing where the father bent the rule allowing security camera because "if grandfather had CCTV they would definitely be using them".
What I'm disappointed is the husband(Alex) arc, he turned bad in the end, but it was not clearly explained(the movie made two lines, one about he could saw the devil, the other about he performed satanic rituals, and that's it).
The weakest part is probably close to the end where she got out of the house and was trying to escape from the establishment. It was the weakest IMO because it involves a bit uncessary Gore (one is hand on a nail, the other is skin sliced open on the fence), and how the butler is able to track her down inside the woods, and how everyone else could track them down is not explained(on car GPS o guess?)
The movie has a lot of subtle hints towards character traits, like how the family members whoo never been a part of the ritual were nervous in hunting the bride down, how the aunt was the most devoted one cause her husband drew the death card, the host tried to keep the old rules because "it was a tradition", how Daniel was actually a coward with a kind heart, which also connects with why he married to a gold digger who, despite Daniel told her the possibility of dying in the ritual, didn't even hesitate.
The movie is a lot better if you view it as a black comedy than a thriller/horror, it works the strongest when you just expect people to have gruesome misfortune while having the bride kicking some ass then it's a enjoyable.

I just finished watching the movie. (Spoilers) And I must say it was a decent horror movie. It's pretty formulaic in some ways but has moments that are genuinely scary/intense. With a premise that is unique, It keeps you on the edge of your seat for most of the run-time. Always hoping the family won't kill her. There was one scene in particular that had me very engaged and physically reacting. When she's climbing out of a hole and got her hand stuck on that nail you can feel her pain. The main character (Grace) does a good job of emoting and you start to like her and want her to survive. The whole cast gives decent performances for the most part. Grace also seems to have a boner for cursing a lot which I found endearing.
Now to get into what I didn't like about this movie. Firstly, I don't think it would be a classic horror movie, if there weren't some parts that just were kinda unbelievable. So I'm not judging too harshly for some of these. For starters, the main character seems to just be oblivious to guns. For example, when the first girl shot and missed Grace by shooting another girl and then drops the gun. Instead of running past and grabbing the gun, Grace just runs past her. You could say she was just too afraid to grab it that time. But then another time a boy drops a gun after shooting Grace in the hand and she doesn't bother to even pick it up. Next, after she strangles the butler guy in the field, Grace had another clear opportunity to pick up his gun and get in the car, but again she just gets in the car. Then there is the moment when she initially met with her husband and he was explaining to her everything that would soon to be happening that night, she starts screaming like a stupid asshole. Then again once she makes it out of the fence. As soon as the first car doesn't stop for her she goes on this almost minute long, loud, curse fest rant about how that guy is an asshole for not stopping. When a normal person who wants to survive would have just shut up and kept running to put as much distance between her and the other people in the house.
Another part that irritated me was the ceremony. Like the entire night everyone was shooting around blindly not concerned whether they killed her or not. Then once the husbands brother actually knocks Grace out and the father comes, the father doesn't immediately shoot her. Instead, now there is this whole ceremony thing that they have to do, I guess that requires her to be alive.
Then there was a part early on in the movie where the father says something like "She's killing all our people" which didn't make sense. Because the 2/3 people that were dead at that time were caused by the other girl who accidentally killed them. At that point Grace had only killed 1 person.
And the ending. I guess the writers did kind of a good job of subverting my expectations. I really believed that the husband was faking being part of the family again just to break his wife out. But the real ending feels almost un-earned. For him to immediately switch to his families side like that. Like his brother and mom just died and I get that should make him sad and maybe rethink some things. But to go from trying to save her the majority of the movie, to trying to murder her in the last act is kinda fucked. And you could say it was because of the one line of dialogue his mother had with him that prompted his change. But that would be dumb so don't say that.
Another dumb ass thing about this movie. They cuffed the husband around a fucking bed post. Any man with average strength would have been able to break that damn thing with ease. But nope they just had him slowly chisel his way out with the handcuffs.
I also almost wish they had made the movie a little longer just so they could add a little more interaction within the family. I feel like we didn't get to care about some of the deaths because we didn't spend much time getting to know them. I seriously don't remember anyone's names.
Overall a solid C/C- grade of a movie. Wouldn't watch again sober and maybe not even if I was high.

This horror thriller owes some of its inspiration to the Pre-Code 1932 movie "The Most Dangerous Game", starring Fay Wray and Joel McCrea. It was mostly filmed at night on the same jungle sets built for filming King Kong.

I believe the rule of Hide n Seek is the family has to separate into 2 teams: The Hire team and Seek one. The whole winning team will survive no matter if they are new or old members.
There are 2 times the family asked Alex if he love Grace unconditionally then why he let her pick that card? We all know that the card cant be foreseen in advance, so it means that Alex totally can do sth else to help Grace, that is pick the card by himself. So it means that the Hire does not need to be the new member.
Besides that, there were stories about other ppl did help the new member to escape in the pass, and the results were death to both new member and the helper (the Hire team). So it might mean the Hire can be more than 1 ppl and if they lose, they will all die, and the rest will survive.
Turn back to the case of Grace, we all know that both Daniel and Alex chose to help Grace escape, so they could be considered as “the Hire”, and if Grace can survive until morning, i believe that all of these 3 will survive. But sadly Daniel was killed by his wife, and Alex changed his mind before the game ends. At the end, after all of the losers had exploded, Alex asked Grace if they can run away from this house together, or in other words, if he could rejoin the Hire again? But Grace answer did confirm that Alex is not in her team, and immediately he was exploded.
P/S: the main reason why Alex changed his mind is when Alex saw Grace killing his mother, he asked Grace if there is any chance she still want to marry him after all, and she hesitated to answer = he knew they were already broken.
=> He had to choose his family or he knew that he was no longer in the Hire.
The Alex story was similar to the Aunty’ story 30 years ago (which is shown at the very beginning of the film), that she was trying her best to stop ppl hunting her husband, but when he was caught, she knew that there is no chance for the Hire, so she decided to kill his husband by herself, as an announcement that she is truly stand by the Seek.
Another point is why the family were not exploded immediately when they saw the sunshine, but only when they said sth or act sth after that? Because it is the time the finally confirmed they were in which team after all. The aunty died first bc she tried to kill Grace, and others alternately died when they said sth against Grace or run away from her =)))
    OMG

After seeing your review of Jon Wick 3 and how your biggest complaint was with Jon changing his mind after that long quest through the desert, I'm not sure I'll agree with your assessment of the characters here as I found that decision made perfect sense in Jon Wick 3. I'm pretty excited to see this one as by all accounts it sounds like a fun time at the movies!
