The line of cars all painted black is a funeral procession for his love who died.

“If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes.” He’s saying if he thinks about it too deeply at sunset, he will kill himself and laugh with his dead loved one by morning. Really the darkest and deepest line in the song and no one ever gets it.

The lyric line about a line of black cars with flowers and my love will never come back refers to the funeral of his girlfriend

Yup!.....A lot of people seem to miss, or not quite grasp this line. It's arguably the most important line in the whole song though.

"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back"
That's a funeral procession, with the black cars covered in flowers, much as they would be in England.

simply mourning the loss of his love.
Having to face the fact she's gone, and seeing the world just going on like normal, but he's stuck in mourning.
How can the world just keep going and be like 'normal' when he's everything but normal.
But like babies are born every day much to the joy of so many, so too does someone die every day.
This was one of my most favs by Stones. MY number one fav is Gimme Shelter. I think you did that one.
Two other wonderful songs by Stones: 'Angie' and 'Wild Horses'

This song was very popular and was on the radio constantly. It has been used in many movies. I don't think I listened to the lyrics in my early teen years. Later I actually listened and realized it was describing how you feel when someone close dies. When you are in deep mourning you know life goes on but you are not able or ready to leave the darkness.

The Adventures Of TNT, I recommend their version of "Little Red Rooster", "Route 66" and "You Can't Catch Me". The Rolling Stones were very heavily into Chicago Blues, especially Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Bo DIddley. Among many other R&B legends. The above three are definitely worth a listen.

I think this is probably the best synthesis of Indian and rock music. Brian Jones was a genius.
Personally, my favorite period of the Stones has to be the era between Beggars Banquet and Goat's Head Soup. You should listen to No Expectations, Let It Bleed, Dead Flowers, Moonlight Mile, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) and Tumbling Dice.

    • @fredkrissman6527

Indian cuz of the prominent use of sitar; did the Beatles beat the Stones to the punch here?

    • @edwardsighamony
      @edwardsighamony 2 года назад +1

@@fredkrissman6527 Not just the use of the sitar. The Beatles got their first, but their sitar-related songs are more indebted to Indian classical music, whereas this sounds closer to a folk song that you would hear in the countryside. I'm shocked that a Western person from that era would be that familiar with Indian folk music.

To me this is a song about grief. The woman he loved. In the extreme of grief, anyone can be lose "rationality". As for the positivity, well, jazz and especially blues are foundational to rock and roll, and jazz (and especially blues!) may be extremely sad, but it is always tough, sorrow never falls into self-pity or sticky sentimentality.

I think one of the worst things about being depressed or mornfull is isolation. If you listen to a song that emphaszes with your emotion, you no longer feel alone in that feeling. And to know that there are others who've been there, who've gone through those moments, allows release of the pressure of one feeling that no one understands. It allows a person release in the sharing of the emotion.

First heard this the summer I turned fourteen; hottest (at that time) summer on record; Queen's jubilee with street parties and I remember suffering from depression, or at least very early signs of a lifelong battle with clinical depression and suicidal thoughts and, I think, this may have had a tenth anniversary re-release because I bought the '45 as it seemed to speak to something within me that I had no name for at the time. As for the comments about music and the way it can help battle depression; albums by bands as varied as Megadeth & ABBA have done that for me so I'm in total agreement with you there, kerk

(I dont really listen to radio anymore. So i dont know if they still get play or not). Nobody thought nothing of the song Brown Sugar being bad. Its the same exact song, but now it somehow became bad? I cannot remember not knowing this music. I was born in 1969. I used to rock out to the stones and the doors in the cradle. But as a child i preferred the beatles. You gotta understand the music was still fresh and new then. Its amazing how the ones we knew were great back then have stood the test of time and are still relevant today. While most of their contemporaries just fell by the way side never to be heard from again.
