Johnny followed her only 4 months later in September 2003. His cause of death is listed as complications from diabetes, but I truly believe he died of a broken heart.
I’d have to agree with you. My mother passed in 2021 and my grandfather passed just 3 months later, officially from complications of covid along with his numerous other health issues, but the whole family knows it was the loss of my mother that pushed him over the edge. He was devastated at losing his youngest daughter and baby and his heart just couldn’t take it.
I read somewhere that he was angry his song was covered without his permission. But then he listened to Cash’s version and was so moved he proclaimed the song to belong to Cash. He redid the song better than the original.
i highly doubt that, every cover has to be authorized in the music industry, and Cash would've never published the song without that. the wikipedia page for the song has a long quote from Reznor about that @@kroakie4
"Everything evokes memories in old age" Wise words from the old man, and very true. I can only imagine how someone his age (same with Johnny while he was alive) feels.
Johnny lived a life full of pain and blessings. He had so much love in His life but in the end it was all lost to the frailties of life. The music grabs you emotionally too!
@@cliffordbowman6777 I'd look in the mirror before assigning arrogance too quickly. I've lost my family twice and my journeys not over. Johnny's life was filled with joy and misery, and like most of us from his own action. Knowing the richness of Johnny's life and some of the depths of his pain, I wouldn't trade my own miseries to have had his life. Upon reflection, I can admire his accomplishments, but understand his journeys pain after my own disappointments. Even the author of this song appreciated the feeling and expression Johnny put into this song. Few can truly understand the depths of pain until they've lived it. The comforts of our lives bounty is nothing without having those we loved around us to enjoy it also. In this hardened world, people we loved walk away from our lives too easily or are taken away by their death. Our only choice is to start over.
I honestly don’t know which was more fulfilling…listening to Johnny sing this again (not the first time I’ve listened to it), or hearing the elder man understand it, completely and with no difficulty, from half a world away from Johnny’s, and from a completely different cultural perspective. The emotional impact that it had on the two of them was both boldly honest, and palpable. I’ve watched literally dozens of reaction videos to this song. This one is easily the best I’ve seen. I can only hope that someone might express to these two men that their efforts here are both appreciated and respected.
What’s more interesting is that this song was written by Trent Reznor and Johnny Cash was able to identify with it and make it his own thing. Great reaction.
@@My2ndnephewActually, he originally said that the master sounded corny (he was only allowing Cash to cover the song because of his manager), but everything changed when he saw the video. Exactly. Cash's version encompassed his entire life experience living in the spotlight, in and out of favor with labels and the public, all the heartbreaks (both done to himself and done to others), drugs, attitudes, changing times, etc. Perfect song for Johnny (RIP).@@sharonstandridge4235

@DG-america I remember that. Cash's performance blew Reznor away. In that position, I would also be like "It's Johnny's song now" because there is no way to top that. Also, it's Johnny Freaking Cash.
If Trent Reznor ever doubted his ability as a songwriter, this surely erases all doubt. Yes. Johnny Cash is an American Legend, but he totally had the perfect song for his goodbye. A song that gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it, and a song that transcends the original intent to people around the world. Trent should be forever emboldened to keep writing, and just know that he has gift to connect with people as human beings.
@@brandocalrissian3294 Johnny cash did a great job with it, amazing even, but you cant take away Trent's part in writing the song. without Trent there is no Hurt. Johnny Cash couldn't write Hurt he didnt have it in him. It took two people 7 years apart to make this masterpiece.
Agreed. I'm 40, just 10 years ago this song didn't resonate with me as it does now. I still loved it, but listening to it now opens a floodgate of emotions. And can see it becoming even more powerful as I keep getting older.
Love Johnny's cover of this song. It always makes me cry. Seeing Naveed and Ameer watch it together gave me the same feelings. I'm really glad you got Ameer for this one. He can truly feel what it says.
They both interpret the song wonderfully but the elder of the two is quite profound in his understanding & heart behind the song certainly a voice of experience .
I truly believe Johnny Cash would be very moved by this reaction and commentary. Uncle is a very wise man and Naveed (?) is a very thoughtful and discerning young man.
These types of reaction videos are so underrated. It shows how much one can learn from other cultures, particularly when they are discussing culturally significant things from one's own part of the world. Westerners (like me) rarely, if ever, have the chance to be exposed to these kinds of experiences, perspectives, and wisdom. This video is a perfect example of the value of such a thing.
You guys absolutely NAILED it talking about Cash's version, his version is all about the regrets and poor decisions made throughout ones life. The Nine Inch Nails version is also amazing, but it's about completely different matters... More from a young person's point of view. But both will break your heart just the same.
lol spot on... as a recovering addict i feel that Nine Inch Nails version is within the depths of addiction and despair, (takes me back there everytime) and the Cash version is the finally sober person looking back at all of the mess and destruction with a sad shake of the head... both are very beautiful songs
I prefer the NIN version but that's down to personal taste. The Cash version is by no means lesser and as a country music fan I worship Johnny Cash ofc.
He is wise. He heard the song and knows the message. Very happy to see his tears, the song did its job. It transcended cultures and language. The message of the heart was heard, and it was known. Relief and love felt in return. Human experience shared. Mission accomplished.
When Johnny closed the cover to the piano 🎹🎶, that was his way of *saying goodbye.* I believe that this was the last video and song that he performed before he passed away. In case the guys don't know, the lady standing on the stairs watching Johnny was his wife June. Johnny passed away Sept. 12, 2003... His wife June passed away May 15, 2003. Johnny passed away 4 months after June did.😢
@@john_thorpe No, that was June Carter Cash. his second wife and an accomplished musician in her own right. She knew his health was failing which is why her look in the video was so solid and heart-felt. That she passed before him is arguably tragic and a relief. Watching the one you love deteriorate and die before your eyes is among the worst things someone can experience.
Another person commented, in another vid, that he was a funeral director. Johnny closing the lid to the piano is exactly the way he closes a coffin on someone he loves.
There’s a story that goes June was not meant to be in the video. She was standing on the prop staircase, off camera, observing Johnny do his thing. One of the crew noticed the emotion on her face and in her eyes while she watched her once-vital, now feeble husband do what he loves, and turned one of the cameras on her. She was unaware she was being filmed, and the expression on her face is pure and without pretense. I hope my wife looks at me like that in my eighties.
Look closely, the message stuck the old man around 4:45 seeing Johnny looking inside the old house, he instantly knew it was where he grew up. It is a universal powerful feeling: as we get close to the end, memories of the beginnings, either joyful or sorrowful, spring forth in chest vividly, intensly
This is without a doubt the best reaction to Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. It seems that these two men, and the older one in particular, have a more in-depth understanding of what Cash is portraying than any other reactor I have seen. I'm so glad I found this video. Thank you for posting this.
Music is universal, I really appreciate how these two gentlemen absolutely got the song, not just heard it, but understood it, felt it. Excellent commentary from both of them as well.
This was him singing a song wrote by another, but it fit his life so much... And he passed away so shortly after he made this video, this was his farewell and reminder to us all. I've seen another reaction video where the reactor just wanted to hug his family after listening to this song as performed by the late Johnny Cash.
johnny cash actually covered this song from nin. he did a phenomenal job main got his own without taking away nin’s vibe. i love both artists so it’s cool to hear the differences and appreciation of the songs!!
I cried a freaking lot the first time I heard Hurt when it was released. I think I've cried even more watching it now and listening to these wise people, specially the elder man. He speaks words of wisdom, indeed 😢
So glad you had an elder person watching with a younger person. Just elders or just younger people alone wouldn’t give so complete a commentary as having both together.
He would keep himself, he would find a way. Johnny Cash won everything in life, but he lost himself. We deeply feel the agony of his regret, and it is a blessing in the lesson it teaches us. We must really think hard about what we prioritize in life’s journey. Also: I am Armenian American diaspora, the inflection and desire to be understood and heard in your voice and the similar words to Armenian that I noticed made me think of my elders discussing sacred matters of humanity. Thank you for this. Your wisdom and experience shine through in your thoughts about the song, the honesty you have to call the main topic of the song “regret” makes you much like Johnny Cash -brave. It is hard to be so honest and in touch with the truth of such a thing. I know I will take this lesson, to “keep myself” even if it means a less successful looking life, all the way to my final days. Seeing a wise elder willing to look at pain and regret with clear vision, despite how hard it is to do so, will help strengthen me in my goal to prioritize the right things and not lose myself. Thank you for letting such a difficult song into your heart in front of us.
the older gentleman understands and gets the message as you can see the song touched him. Johnny Cash is one of the greatest of all times and an american LEGEND.
Trent Reznor created a great song. Johnny Cash made it resonate beyond imagination. Thank you go both of those great artists. And thank you sirs for the insight.
Trent really doesn't get enough credit for writting this song. Both deserve respects for this song, as you have done. In my eyes, it's one of the most powerful songs. I can't think of another song that resonates at such a level.
Trent Reznor has said in interviews that after hearing this version he was in awe and basically told Johnny Cash that the song was his now. ❤ I always liked the original version but this version gets to me every time I hear it. His voice just resonates with a lifetime of ups and downs, failures and successes. This theme is universal and timeless. It resonates across borders, cultures, religion, age, sex, politics....etc. The reactions are perfect. Thank you for this video
Wow, the song is powerful all by itself but the two men's reactions were just as powerful! The younger one sees it as a future analogy but the older one sees it and feels every word. Very moving. ❤❤❤
Greatest cover I ever heard. It's for all of our lives. When you start getting older and you think about people you clashed with or loved and they went before you did. Things that you wished you said or didn't say. Just pure mortality. It sucks....but it is the rollercoaster.
Both of these men had such beautiful ways of expressing how the song made them feel. They were each saying exactly my own feelings for which I couldn't seem to string together a coherent sentence to explain. I love when someone describes something in a way that is exactly perfect for whatever they're describing while simultaneously being something I would never have thought on my own.
What an amazing emotional reaction and on point review of these two great men. Loved to watch and hear what they said. Please, more of music reactions of them two. Love from Germany 🧡
The first time I heard Johnny Cash singing this song on the radio I was driving down a major interstate highway. My eyes started to well up with tears and I had to pull over and park in for a couple minutes in the emergency lane to get myself together. It still sometimes has the same effect on my. R.I.P Johnny.
I can't listen to this song without crying. It's so beautiful and painful. I loved seeing how it moved them. I'm kind of surprised you haven't had them listen to Pink Floyd yet. Talk about moving. Every song of theirs is more beautiful than the last, and the live shows are absolutely amazing, especially the Pulse concert. *Comfortably Numb* from Pulse is legendary and ends with what is generally considered to be one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded. 💜🎸🤘🏽
I first heard this version of Hurt as a student and I started crying right away. I wish I would have showed this to my grandmother, she would have loved it.
So heartbreakingly sad and when you shedded tears and reached for a tissue I broke down as well. Music is a universal language that everyone understands, and this reaction was just very meaningful and beautiful. With all the chaos in the world knowing that the majority of humanity longs for love and peace makes it even better. Just beautiful.
I am AMAZED Reznor was against this at first, then heard this version and broke down in tears. You can hear his emotion in this song. This will forever be my favorite Johnny Cash song.
The elder man really does understand what Johnny Cash was singing about! Life is vibrant when you are young, but with age, those things simply fade....what you are left with is memories of what used to be...but it takes on a deeper meaning! I really appreciate the wisdom in these tribal people!!! Sure makes sense as I still try to understand my aging myself. Really liked this!
What a great reaction from these guys! Music has no boundaries. I was never a Johnny Cash fan but this song gets me every time I hear it. The pain and regret makes me sad for him and I can't help reflecting on my own life. Beautiful song.
Your analysis is so important because it shows that music breaks all barriers. Your feelings about this song are so correct, we all feel pain of different kinds, no matter who we are or where we live. You both have beautiful souls!
I'm in awe of this elder gentleman. His insight and feeling of what life is and the messages this song conveys on different aspects and levels of the human experience.
The song is a profound combination of Trents music, Johnnies interpretation of the lyrics and powerful visuals. It transcends cultures and language. This elder gives an adroit interpretation of what they saw and heard. Its inspiring to see these gentleman affected so deeply by this work.
Johnny Cash is an American icon who breaks the barriers between music genres. Everyone knows Cash. He helped many musicians get their start. I grew up with his music. My father and he had the same job in the military. And he looks a lot like my dad in younger years. Dad will be 92 in 2 months. And hearing this reminds me of him and his life.
Trent released this song when he was 29. This video really expresses the genius of his writing. Trent's genius is matched by Johnny's soul poured into his performance. Even Trent recognized and adored this version of his song. Two great artists came together to this is the result. I do wish though, that these men were aware of the whole story behind this performance because their honesty and genuine thoughtfulness is so very clear. I'd love to hear more of their thoughts.
I love the fact music brings us ALL together. I'm an old white female living in the US. Watching these videos with the Tribe! Confirms we DO NOT hate each other. Bless you my brothers.
Thank you Trent Reznor and Rick Rubin ! Johnny didn't even want to do this song and Rick kept at him until he agreed. Awesome how emotional everyone gets hearing this version.
Cash came from abject poverty. He started picking cotton with his family at five. At 8 or 9 his brother died in a really nasty work accident, for which he felt guilty to his death. He was an addict for much of his life, and spent many a night in prison. He knew hard times. I am a Man's Man, I have a past in the military and as a carpenter, I like to fight with swords, hunting, fishing. When I listen to this song tears roll down my cheeks uncontrolledly. It hits and expresses all the pain inside that we keep under control otherwise to not fall apart. The older man here gets it. He gets it. The song was written by Trent reznor and performed by his band Nine Inch nails, and he was initially reluctant to let Cash do a cover. When he heard it, he said, "This is your song now". Cash's daughter heard it (or was present, I am not sure), she said, "It sounds like you are saying goodbye" Cash replied; "Maybe I am", a few months later his wife passed (she is the woman in the video), and after that he himself died. It was a goodbye.
Just watching their faces... You can see their emotions, how each of them are recognizing and understanding the lyrics. You can watch empathy dawning. 🥺
This amazing rendition of "Hurt" is a refection of a old man's life, but the song was written by a young man. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this about something totally different sometime in his 20's. It's truly a totally different song when done by Nine Inch Nails. Same song, different perspective.
@@sandracox4341 Trent's is from the perspective of a young man, drowning in addiction and looking for a way out. Johnny's is a completely different perspective, an old man at the end of his life who went through that same battle, and looking back on all of the things he did to those he loved with regret.
You both showed such authentic reactions and it just demonstrates how powerfully music can translate across languages and cultures. I never cared much for Johnny Cash's music but this song always makes me cry. I'm only 30 but I already look back on my life with so much regret and nostalgia. This song is full of pain and sorrow. The reactions, especially from the older gentleman are profound. I think people from their culture have a deep understanding of life, I love watching their reaction videos . A very deep song, made me cry
When I see videos like this, or the other tribal guys channel, reactions of one country from another, etc., I always remember that it’s only governments and “scholars” that want us hating each other, and that for the most part most all of us would be good friends. Me and these men are completely different cultures and faiths, and we could talk music and life and be good friends.
This is the magic of music. A masterpiece song about addiction written by an industrial metal god gets covered by an icon of country and western who filters it thru his own unique lens and it becomes a touchstone of humanity throughout the world 🌟🦇🌟

My grandfather passed 6 months after my grandmother he had dementia and spent alot of that time asking where she was.
He absolutely grieved himself to death. But I don't think he would have wanted it any other way ❤
The sweetness left his life.
Hurt is such an amazing song. Written by Trent Reznor in his late 20s and yet so fitting for Johnny as he faced the end of his life.
Rumor is after Trent heard this he broke down crying
allegedly after hearing Cash's version he said "this is not my song anymore"@@galaxiafletes8287
@@galaxiafletes8287 After he saw the video. He was so-so about the music, then he saw the video and was "It's not my song anymore."
"Everything evokes memories in old age"
Wise words from the old man, and very true. I can only imagine how someone his age (same with Johnny while he was alive) feels.
Learning more about that with every new regret...
Johnny lived a life full of pain and blessings. He had so much love in His life but in the end it was all lost to the frailties of life. The music grabs you emotionally too!
Not as old as you think. Must be a young, arrogant observer
Until Valhalla fellow Berzerker. May the Valkyries find you worthy.
"Education is mandatory, but experience matters the most." What a wise man. Bring more videos with this gentleman.
When he heard Johnny Cash's version he said that the song didn't belong to him anymore.
I think anyone can identify with this song.
@@My2ndnephewActually, he originally said that the master sounded corny (he was only allowing Cash to cover the song because of his manager), but everything changed when he saw the video. That's when he said the song was no longer his. He said, "It's like seeing your ex girlfriend happy with someone else "
Exactly. Cash's version encompassed his entire life experience living in the spotlight, in and out of favor with labels and the public, all the heartbreaks (both done to himself and done to others), drugs, attitudes, changing times, etc. Perfect song for Johnny (RIP).@@sharonstandridge4235
The song is about life, regret, pain, time and death. It relates to everyone, it's just Johnny Cash has taken it to a whole other level
*"hurt is a song that makes you reflect on your own life choices"* - there is nothing else to say this wise man hasnt covered.

I think these two gentleman have a spot on reaction to Jonny Cash"s farewell to his family, friends, and fans.
It's not Cash's song? It's a Nine Inch Nails cover.
@@thediydadreadingbut he did an amazing job singing it. And it was sort of his farewell to the world. Lots of people cover other people's songs and make it their own and that's exactly what Mr. Cash did with this ❤
@@thediydadreading
Trent Reznor is quoted saying "It isn't my song anymore."
Don't trivialize the weight and impact of this by calling it a cover. Tge importance is too big for that.
@DG-america I remember that. Cash's performance blew Reznor away. In that position, I would also be like "It's Johnny's song now" because there is no way to top that. Also, it's Johnny Freaking Cash.
@@thediydadreadingNIN having wrote the song changes nothing, it's still exactly what OP said it was.
Absolutely the best reaction ever 💗 Thank you for your perspective on this song ..you speak the truth.God have mercy on us 🙏💔
Beautiful song. Beautifully written by Trent Reznor and beautifully performed my the late/great Johnny Cash.
This stopped being his song the second Johnny first sang it.

You reach a point in your life where this song resonates with your soul in a different way.
A song that can make you honestly feel different things depending on where you are in life is a very good song indeed.
And that point comes way quicker than you would think when you are young
@@JamoonXerxesSauber truly agree with you on that.
Agreed. I'm 40, just 10 years ago this song didn't resonate with me as it does now. I still loved it, but listening to it now opens a floodgate of emotions. And can see it becoming even more powerful as I keep getting older.
What if your only 26 do I have a chance
Love Johnny's cover of this song. It always makes me cry. Seeing Naveed and Ameer watch it together gave me the same feelings. I'm really glad you got Ameer for this one. He can truly feel what it says.
😇
I cry every time too. The song weighs heavy.
They’re so pure and beautiful. I love these videos.
the difference is this young man understands it, but the older gentleman lived it.
thank you for the video
They both interpret the song wonderfully but the elder of the two is quite profound in his understanding & heart behind the song certainly a voice of experience .
I've never heard someone describe and summarize Johnny's singing so perfectly, these guys know their stuff for never having heard him before.
I truly believe Johnny Cash would be very moved by this reaction and commentary. Uncle is a very wise man and Naveed (?) is a very thoughtful and discerning young man.
Facts
I feel connection with this elder. May God bless him.
Thanks for letting people know that Trent Lesnar is the original artist
@@fog4928Trent Reznor actually made the statement that he'd wrote this song, but Johnny made it his song
@@fog4928it's not a secret. Trent basically said it's Johnny's song now after he heard this version
Johnny passed away 4 months after June did.😢
Actually I think that was his daughter, and his daughter said something like "It sounds like your saying goodbye." to which Johnny said "I am."
Wasn‘t his last song the duet with his daughter „September when it comes“?
There’s a story that goes June was not meant to be in the video. She was standing on the prop staircase, off camera, observing Johnny do his thing. One of the crew noticed the emotion on her face and in her eyes while she watched her once-vital, now feeble husband do what he loves, and turned one of the cameras on her. She was unaware she was being filmed, and the expression on her face is pure and without pretense. I hope my wife looks at me like that in my eighties.
Yes...so on point ..thank you...sending love ..
Excellent commentary from both of them as well.
... and coming from a completely different musical background, I was amazed.
Absolutely agree
This was him singing a song wrote by another, but it fit his life so much... And he passed away so shortly after he made this video, this was his farewell and reminder to us all.
I've seen another reaction video where the reactor just wanted to hug his family after listening to this song as performed by the late Johnny Cash.
johnny cash actually covered this song from nin. he did a phenomenal job main got his own without taking away nin’s vibe. i love both artists so it’s cool to hear the differences and appreciation of the songs!!
As I get older this song becomes more and more personal. No one lives a life without regret.
That line hit hard. No one lives a life without regret.
Genius
Respect and love to you, friends!
the older gentleman understands and gets the message as you can see the song touched him.
I always liked the original version but this version gets to me every time I hear it. His voice just resonates with a lifetime of ups and downs, failures and successes. This theme is universal and timeless. It resonates across borders, cultures, religion, age, sex, politics....etc. The reactions are perfect. Thank you for this video
Oh my! This was one of your best videos to date. The older gentleman needs to do more of these, he’s a real gem.
Beautiful reaction. Both gentlemen got it. Communication between cultures at it's best. Thank you for posting.
This old fellow really shows he cares as he expresses his interpretation. It resonates with him.
A very intelligent and heartfelt reaction. Two gentleman with compassion.
Their analysis is amazing
The first time I heard Johnny Cash singing this song on the radio I was driving down a major interstate highway. My eyes started to well up with tears and I had to pull over and park in for a couple minutes in the emergency lane to get myself together. It still sometimes has the same effect on my. R.I.P Johnny.
This song always hits me hard as I get older. 😢 Loved seeing these two watching the video and giving us their thoughts.
Beautiful reaction ❤ Greedings from Germany ❤❤❤
One of the greatest covers
“This song will continue to resonate with generations to come”. Old dude gets it. This song still makes me cry every damn time.
Thank you for the subtitles.. i really enjoyed listening to what you two think and feel about this music.
When a man finally sheds his ego he realises what holds true importance in life most the time its to late, we are only humans.
And hearing this reminds me of him and his life.
in a world where people praise mediocrity this man is a true legend It's a shame people under 40 or 45 know anything
"Life is a journey to death" DAMN that hits hard!
This might be the most beautiful reaction video I've ever seen...
Awesome how emotional everyone gets hearing this version.
the elder got it on point.💯
Beautifull and Wonderfull the music and the coments
I love this guy's reaction.. I'm barely middle-aged & I feel the same when I hear Johnny Cash sing this rendition! ❤
He felt so guilty because his father openly blamed him and said he’d rather Johnny died instead.
Elvis was responsible for Johnny’s addiction. He introduced him to drugs
@@kennethhigdon1159 source? "Trust me bro"?

I love how music connects us ❤️
This song gets me every time
This amazing rendition of "Hurt" is a refection of a old man's life, but the song was written by a young man. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this about something totally different sometime in his 20's. It's truly a totally different song when done by Nine Inch Nails. Same song, different perspective.
They both battled addiction.
Beautiful reaction, keep up the good work!
You just don’t know what you missed, like most younger people you are close minded. Cash was someone who played what he liked. I think he was more commentator than singer
@@cliffordbowman6777 Next time, get to know a person before you label them as close minded. Otherwise, you are being the close minded one by assuming that every "young person" meets the stereotype you have in your head. Thanks and bye.
If he only knew something about the man who wrote that song, and the man who helped Johnny to sing it. And everything that happened in between 💜
This is the magic of music. A masterpiece song about addiction written by an industrial metal god gets covered by an icon of country and western who filters it thru his own unique lens and it becomes a touchstone of humanity throughout the world 🌟🦇🌟
Interesting and accurate breakdown of the video.
What a wise man! We need more of that in our world. Bless him!

Its weird how even if you dont understand a language you can still feel the emotions from the song
Would love to see their reaction to "Vincent" by Don McLean. Most people know it as "Starry starry night"
You guys should check out the movie Walk the Line. It’s about Johnny Cash’s early life and career. The music and performances are all fantastic and Joaquin Phoenix looks and sounds so much like him when he was young.
