    Re-read the lyrics. The give away is early in the song , " I see a line of cars and they're all painted black." It's a funeral and it's about grief and mourning for the girl he loves, (loved).

    You are right it is sad. It's about losing someone - the line of cars painted black is the funeral procession (flowers and his love never to come back). He can't bear seeing everyone else happy when his world has been destroyed so he has to turn his head away. He wants everything to be as black as he feels.

      I remember playing Twisted Metal Black and it was a cynical happy song used as an ode to murderers finding sweet relief taking apart their victims, but some of the characters just had really tragic back stories that would mess anyone up. For example one guy had all his senses removed by a mad doctor who cut out his eyes, ears, tongue, and nose... His ode was getting revenge on the doctor. Dollface was a beautiful model who went in for cosmetic surgery and ended up locked up in a porcelain doll mask with nails on the inside of it to permanently disfigure her and couldn't be taken off.
      It's a good song and a morbid gane story but it fits.

    This song is one of the most disturbing ever ... and I suggest that its meaning is far deeper than a funeral, or a man mourning a girlfriend, etc. I think this song chillingly conveys madness - real madness and despair, and a wrenching detachment from humanity. GREAT SONG.

    As great as the Stones were during the Mick Taylor years, they never recaptured that sound they had before that. They would never be as experimental again either. I can't think of many songs that are of this era (1966) that sound as timeless of this. Just an incredible track.

    • @fuchsiaswing8545
      @fuchsiaswing8545 9 месяцев назад +4

      Well, the experimentation in 1966-67 was just part of what was happening in rock and roll. New musical forms, orientalism, exotic instruments, and in-studio experimentation coincided. Obviously, Brian was a crucial figure in all of this, not just with the Stones, but as an influential musical figure.

    Rolling Stones made many great songs and are truly legendary musicians whose career spans 60 years now. I have been fortunate to be able to visit one of their live concerts back in 1990 in the Roterdam "Kuip" football stadium with about 50,000 spectators; it was amazing!
    Some of my favourite Stones songs are: 19th nervous breakdown, Mother's little helper, Its all over now, Under my thumb, Ruby Tuesday, Lady jane, She's a rainbow, Sympathy for the devil, Emotional rescue, Start me up, Waiting on a friend, Under cover of the night, Jumping jack flash, Brown sugar, Angie and of course Paint it black.

  • @sumonjamal1653

    One of The Rolling Stones' biggest singles from 1966... it sounds like a spaghetti western movie soundtrack, and the lyrics are about depression from personal loss... The Rolling Stones started around 1962 after The Beatles had formed... They debuted in 1964 and released cover songs before Mick Jagger (vocals) and Keith Richards (guitar) realized that they could write great original songs - 'Satisfaction' was one of their first big singles that those 2 wrote together in 1965... They would eventually be called 'The Glimmer Twins'... The other members included Charlie Watts (drums), Brian Jones (guitar) and Bill Wyman (bass)... Tragically, guitarist Brian Jones died in 1969 shortly after leaving the band due to heavy drug and alcohol abuse (He was found dead drowned in his own swimming pool)
    Mick Taylor (guitar) replaced Brian Jones in 1969 as The Rolling Stones grew in popularity in the 1970's... Mick Taylor left the band in 1974(?) and was replaced by Ronnie Wood (guitar)... The Rolling Stones kept release hit record after hit record going into 1981, but a feud between Jagger and Richards kept the band off the road until the 2 collaborators finally made peace in 1989 and returned w/ a new album ('Steel wheels') and a world tour.
    Bassist Bill Wyman left the band in 1992 and was never replaced in the band (Bassist Darryl Jones would play w/ Jagger, Richards, Watts and Wood as a session musician) ... The Rolling Stones became the biggest band in the world on ticket sales alone by that point in the 90's and would pull in crowds from generations of fans who loved their catalog of music.
    Charlie Watts (drums) passed away in 2021... The Rolling Stones carried on touring w/ session players and released their latest album 'Hackney diamonds' in 2023.
    The 'goth girl' look would be better for doom metal songs like "Black No. 1" by Type O Negative... 'Leaders' by Katatonia ... or 'The last time' by Paradise Lost 🤘🤘🔥🔥

    This a contradictory, camouflaged song of very fast, uptempo music (well, E/F minor, uptempo), with poetry of very deep grief, and sorry. When it first came out, I thought it just a fantastic rocking song, which I quickly learned on guitar. Then my girlfriend told me to very carefully listen to the words, which I did a number of times … then it hit me like a ton of bricks. This song is one of those well put together masterpieces.

    Hhmmm... what can I tell you about The Rolling Stones. Yes, they're from the UK. The Beatles were the ones that really kicked off what is known as, at least in the US, the British Invasion in the mid 60s, which is largely attributed with starting a revolution in Rock N Roll music, and The Stones were definitely also influential in that era, who were friendly with, but also competitive with The Beatles. The founder and leader of the band had originally been Brian Jones, but he died very young. I think it's kind of a rock n roll mystery, and he was found dead floating in his swimming pool. Probably drug related, but even before that, the lead singer Mick Jagger, and lead guitarist Keith Richards, had kind of taken over the creative control and lead of the band. They're one of those musical partnerships that just work better together than either one of them can individually alone. Which is usually a sometimes tumultous relationship as they are dependent on each other while also being resentful of each other for the fact they are, but they've been able to make it work for decades, and are one of the most influential, and longest running bands in the history of rock n roll. Mick Jagger is considered one of the most charasmatic front men in rock n roll history, but is also been a very smart businessman. Keith Richards, one of the greatest guitar players ever. The old joke about him is that as they were truly emblematic of the "sex, drugs, and rock n roll" era, that he's probably done everything you can imagine in his day, but just can't be killed, and is invincible, and likely to out rock and out live us all! Their drummer, Charlie Watts just died within the past year, but their longevity is almost unheard of. They're very old men now, but still kicking and rocking in a way that's rarely been done by anyone else before.

    This is NOT a happy song. It is NOT a dancing song. Its themes are grief (reacting to a funeral) and anger (reacting to society and to life in general). It trembles on the edge of insanity, and is probably a last rant before the singer’s descent into madness. For a similar song (in meaning, if not in tone), check out “Turn Out the Stars”, by Jane Monheit: ruclips.net/video/2Ove3ZIvrcc/видео.htmlsi=41T2pZ_XuTc7krZv
    Here are the lyrics:
    Turn out the stars! Turn out the stars!
    Let eternal darkness hide me
    If I can´t have you beside me.
    Put out their fire; the endless splendor
    Only reminds me of your tenderness.
    Stop the ocean’s roar; don´t let the river run!
    Let me hear no more the wondrous music
    Of a skylark in the sun! Let it be done.
    Turn out the stars! Turn out the stars!
    Shut off their light! Stop every comet
    In its magic lonely flight. Let there be night!
    Turn out the stars...

    these comments were stolen from another music sight, but they nailed it;
    Here's the key: "I see a line of cars / And they're all painted black / With flowers and my love / Both never to come back." He's seeing the funeral procession for his beloved. She has died, and in his sadness he wants all the world to wear the color of mourning.
    When people see him, the bereaved man left behind, they "turn their heads / And quickly look away." "Like a newborn baby / It [death] happens every day." Like birth, death is common.
    Then he addresses his dead beloved: "I could not foresee this thing / Happening to you."
    "I see the girls walk by / Dressed in their summer clothes / I have to turn my head." Because they are a reminder of his beloved. And because it seems wrong to him that anyone should wear happy colors after his beloved has died. The entire world should wear black.
