This is a song about a man mourning the unexpected death of his girlfriend, his mood is so dark he doesn't want to see any bright colors. "I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes" - when he sees the young girls dressed up, it reminds him of his girlfriend whom he has lost. "I see a line of cars And they're all painted black With flowers and my love Both never to come back" - the black cars are limousines waiting to go to the girl's funeral, one of the cars is a hearse with her casket inside with flowers on the top. "I've seen people turn their heads And quickly look away Like a newborn baby It just happens everyday" Even though it happens every day just like babies being born every day, people turn their heads when they see a funeral go by.

And in the following years, bands influenced by black music continued to form. Like Cream, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd...
You gotta kinda know music history to appreciate it fully honestly, this was one of the hardest songs ever created at the time. Really paved the way for a lot of harder rock in the future. Most people at the time have only really ever heard classical 50’s music.
I think anyone who has lost someone extremely dear to them or experienced some horrific circumstance that changes the way they see the world, can relate to the sentiment of this song at some point in their healing process. It’s hard to see the world cheerfully and oblivious going on around you, while your whole world falls apart. I said elsewhere in a reply that because I first knew this song as the opening to a tv show about the Vietnam war, I always interpreted it as though it was about a soldier returning from war and having a hard time adjusting to their old life, perhaps suffering from the effects of PTSD. Surprised to not see Beast of Burden and You Can’t Always Get What You Want mentioned in the comments - two of my absolute favourite Stones songs. Those two in addition to Paint it Black, Gimme Shelter, and Angie (which I have seen mentioned) - are all worthwhile listens for those new to the group.
Interesting thought. I guess the song is open to interpretation, and one would either come from their own personal experience or be open to another interpretation. Classic Rolling Stone; thought-provoking lyrics.

@@jimloontiens9275 I KNEW there was a show with this theme song! I was extremely little when that show was on t.v. (toddler-preschool age), but I always associated this song with The Vietnam War, mainly a helicopter going over that bunch of trees. I remember telling my mom this when I heard her listening to this song when I was in my teens, but all she told me was that a lot of ppl thought/associated it with the Vietnam war (she was a little kid then so she wouldnt have know what this song was about when it first came out). I just looked up the intro to the show and sure enough the first few seconds there was a helicopter. This definitely would've been a show my parents watched back then and now it all makes sense why I associate Paint it Black with The Vietnam War. Thank you!
So emotional. Such a dark and heavy feeling overcome me while i listen. The upbeat and the downbeat, the anger the pain. I've felt this way before. Thank you for the reaction.
One of the best songs ever by one of the best bands of all time. This song became huge all through the Vietnam war. Regardless of what they wrote it about, it’s something that those of us with PTSD, especially military vets, relate very well to
Someone out there picked up on the connection with this song and the feelings around Vietnam. They used this song for the theme on the short lived tv show Tour of Duty starring Tom Berringer which was about an army platoon in Vietnam.
The Rolling Stones was my dad's favorite band. He passed away late 2019 and at his wake we played the song "Wild Horses" because it was a song he used to love singing to my mom, who also passed 14 years ago. It was our way of sending him off to finally be with her again. it was beautiful.

This was a huge song around the Vietnam war ..great tune...there's so many great stones song...check out she's so cold, or sympathy for the devil..which just rocks💯🤟
Their best song is gimme shelter by far, the stones are all time greats and they came out basically the same year and as rivals of the Beatles. The stones have a deep catalog with songs like gimme shelter, sympathy for the devil, under my thumb and many more
I know the Beatles are taken as the gods of music and all, but Gimme Shelter >>>>>> Anything the Beatles have ever done. Sorry, but that power is unmatched by anything the beatles have done imo
I was never a big fan of the Stones until I saw them live about 10yrs ago @ Hershey stadium Pa..... I was absolutely blown away by 1. Their stage setup! It was phenomenal 💯 2. How awesome they sound live and last but definitely NOT least, There energy and the amount of moving and dancing they were all doing the entire show... And all of them were in their 70's and late 60's no less! I was thoroughly impressed and completely blown away! I've been to a ton of live shows and seem some of the best musicians alive. And the Stones show is definitely in my top 5 greatest/best 🙌🏽💋👅🙌🏽
Last saw them in Tampa 10/29/21…i was sober. Street Fighting Man was their opening song and I never sat down. After the show, i sat down & waited for the crowd to leave and talked to a few people near me & I asked how does one come down from the adrenaline rush after this???
Can't agree with that assessment. I found it boring as f**k at the time, and still do. My own nomination from the Brian Jones era is Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown.
I saw them a few year back. One of the best concerts I've every seen. Find and listen to Gimme Shelter. Amazing story of the gospel singer Mary Clayton and how she was brought to the studio in the middle of the night (while pregnant) to add the back up vocal. She let loose and Jagger was blown away. One of the all time greatest Rolling Stones songs.
I can't say how much I love you listening and exploring different genres. I've seen The Stones 5 times. The energy Jagger has! Rock n Roll. They took their name from a Muddy Waters song, " A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss" Muddy Waters an absolute Legend!!
I just stumbled on you guys. When I came to the US I learned English from old rock songs. Your reactions and authentic appreciation for the musicality of all songs is just darling. Thank you for making my great day even brighter!
Used to play this song repeatedly and sing it at the top of my lungs. I was grieving a loss at the time and it perfectly described my mood. Didn't know until just now that it was a song about the aftermath of losing a loved one. Wow. Child of the 70's here. Love you guys, love your show.
We British deliver some of the best music the world has ever known. Yes! What a brilliant show. I remember watching reruns with my older brother when I was little. Because of that, I always interpreted the lyrics as being about a soldier returning from the Vietnam war (or any war really) and having a hard time readjusting, maybe dealing with PTSD.
This song, along with the movie "Full Metal Jacket" got me out of a DEEP depression in 2013. My gf of two years broke up with me, my mom was sick, I was going nowhere in life -- I just felt like I was stuck. But I would blast this track and get myself out of that funk. 🙏🏼
Im so happy and proud of you to hear you are doing so much better after that. I have been there. Alot of us have been. But to beat the funk , at least enough to try to be happy again, is a big accomplishment!
@@Nikkistrict So true!! But I had to totally stay away from a lot of music in my collection that I loved so much because it took me back to stuff I just could not deal with. Y’all are killing me with this one. “Are they still alive? 1966. Probably not”. 😅 They’re still touring although they recently lost their legendary drummer Charlie Watts. I highly recommend reading Keith Richard’s autobiography Life. You can learn a lot about life by reading “Life” ❤
I love the Stones! They were a little before my time but as a child i grew up in a large family with varying musical influences. That was such a great song!
The Rolling Stones are the GREATEST ROCK BAND IN THE WORLD! Been around and STILL rocking for 60 years. I’m 63 and have seen them 6 times from ‘78-2021. I wear a Stones T Shirt every day, have so much memorabilia than I know what to do with and still want more. Listen to the album Black and Blue-great blues with Billy Preston all over it. Fave song is Melody on that one. So many great albums & songs. They cover a lot of early Motown hits through the years. Can’t believe you’ve never heard them before now. You’ve missed out.
The Rolling Stones and The Beatles came up around the same time in the early-1960s, and despite their perceived rivalry amongst the two groups' fanbases, they liked one another behind the scenes. When all of you get the chance to do so, definitely react to "Start Me Up", from 1982. The music video is the primary inspiration for the recent hit song, "Moves Like Jagger". Mick Jagger is the lead singer for The Rolling Stones.
This tune was also featured in a mini series titled Tour of Duty , a film about soldiers in Vietnam. You should view the series if you can. It was great.
The song is about the depression felt after the death of a friend / lover. The line that makes it most clear is the one about the line of cars that are all painted black -- a reference to a funeral.
The reason they are called the worlds greatest rock and roll band is because they have been putting out and performing top tier rock since the early sixties. Jagger is ageless. Still in top physical condition and putting on energetic performances at an advanced age. It's a very deep rabbit hole you've opened up. Gimme Shelter is amazing and I could say that about many of their songs.
That's a common fable - My parents, their friends tell it like this...most, if not all were fans of both bands...just like people were fans of most of the bands in the 60's. Sure one will have a favorite, but to say "it's this or that - can't have both" is collectively wrong!
The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were part of the British Invasion in the early ‘60’s. A few of the band members are still rockin’, a few have passed. John Lennon, for example, was shot to death outside his apartment in NYC. 😢
So glad you gave the explanation of the song. I grew up listening to this because my parents had it on viynal. It make so much more sense. Always loved it.
Very off topic and a totally different genre but y'all should react to Rammstein. They're a German industrial metal band and they're fiiiiiire (literally). You could start with Du Hast (live version in Paris) and go on to the other hits - Ich Will, Amerika, Mein herz Brennt. Speaking of the Rolling Stones, yes they're still alive and still performing. Anyway great reaction, keep it up!
Great band. Listen to the Eagles singing Hotel California 👍👍👍 Awesome song The Eagles are in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame for one the best bands ever... 🙌
The British people were MASSIVELY inspired by Black American music, mainly Blues, but also Jazz. They were far behind us, but they reinterpreted it in really interesting ways. What I find so cool about music is how a style can bounce back and forth from different cultures, growing each time it bounces. The exact same thing happened to Techno, which originated in Black Detroit and Chicago. The Brits put a big spin on it, bounced it back, but by that time Americans were more interested in Rap and Hip-Hop, which the Brits also had a response to.
And rock n roll! That came first we just were interested where it came from so the young English people were ordering shipments of American blues and jazz vinyl.
The brits really took rock n roll to a new level with the beatles, stones, Queen, Floyd, Zeppelin. Those 5 bands alone are 5 of the biggest bands in rocks history. Impressive!
We weren’t ‘far behind’ you. It’s not about being behind. We had our own music genres. We’re on a separate continent with a very large ocean in between. There’s no reason why blues would’ve organically emerged in the U.K. when it had its roots in African folk music and is specific to that culture. Our music artists could only adapt it and reinterpret it once they had been exposed to it, which happened in the first half of the 20th century. And when you say ‘us’, that’s a bit misleading because mainstream white America took no notice of blues until the British bands popularised it. You even had separate ‘black’ and ‘white’ radio stations, something we’ve never had.
They named themselves after the blues song "Rolling Stone" by late great blues musician Muddy Waters. A lot of British rock bands around that time were influenced by American blues music.
So true! I have a favorite British Rock band that I turn people on to every chance I get. I’ve loved him and his band since I was in grade school lol, thanks to my big brother. Marc Bolan of T Rex!! I’ve never stopped listening to his work. Such a loss!! Far too soon!!
Thanks for reacting to this. 👊 I didn't pay attention to this song's lyrics when I was growing up, and -- thanks to this listen, at 64 yrs. old -- I now understand what it was about. Fwiw, _The Stones_ (as they are called by their fans) were contemporaries of the Beatles... they were considered the dirtier, grungier, druggier, counterpart to the Beatles' cleaner, more fun, humorous, nice-guys image.
The stones somehow are still touring !!! Unbelievably talented everyone of them !! A little overlooked in the 60s by the Beatles !! But again what blows my mind is these guys are still touring 60 years later
I've seen a few legendary acts in their twilight years in the last 15 years and all I can say is: maaaaan, I wish I could've seen Dylan and the stones in their heyday because it was a fucking farce hearing a 90 year old Bob Dylan lazily croon his way through songs sounding like a confused dementia patient gargling hot gravel haphazardly or seeing Keiths geriatric osteoporosis riddled bones gyrate through a laughable set of their most radio friendly bubblegum songs.
My dad is a Vietnam veteran. This song was one of their anthem's for the war. He get emotional to this day every time he hears this song. He loves it and hates it at the same time. Even though this song was written about a girl it that is not how most saw the meaning. Hell, I never knew it was written about a girl until just now, LOL. This song reflected the dreadful mood of people at the time waiting to be drafted and loosing loved ones.
This is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed; he wants everything to turn black to match his mood. There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. When asked at the time why he wrote a song about death, Mick Jagger replied: "I don't know. It's been done before. It's not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it." The song seems to be about a lover who died: "I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" - The hearse and limos. "With flowers and my love both never to come back" - The flowers from the funeral and her in the hearse. He talks about his heart being black because of his loss. "I could not foresee this thing happening to you" - It was an unexpected and sudden death. "If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" - This refers to her in Heaven.
One of the greatest bands ever, and their songs are wildly different from eachother. Check out Gimmie Shelter, Salt of the Earth, Angie. Gimmie Shelter should be your next one.
They’ve written great sweet love songs, angry songs, sexy songs, etc. My favorite band in the world my entire life. An early Fave album of mine is FLOWERS. OMG-they’re ALL great.
"Gimme Shelter" is their best rocker. "Sympathy for the Devil" is a close second. You guys would probably like "Under My Thumb" and "Get off of My Cloud" as well.
The Rolling Stones have admitted to the darker aspect of their music. Of course they admitted it decades later after we made them rich legendary artists. No hate just some info. My dad use to listen to this song when I was a kid. He was always stoned lol
I haven't heard any mentions of Paul Revere "The British Are Coming" since 5th grade in History class!!!! That was funny. Great review!!!! God bless!!!!
The Rolling stones were very ''out there'' with some of their songs. But there are such good ones - I personally love this one though, Paint it black is deep. They've also done Angie, Honky Tonk women, Sympathy for the devil, Ruby Tuesday, Gimmie shelter, Jumping Jack flash (I'll stop now lol) The C bomb creased me btw 🤣🤣
This song was used in Full Metal Jacket. 4 other great songs by them are Monkey Man, Gimme Shelter and Can't you hear me knocking and Sympathy for the devil.
You might want to check out the band Queen when you get a chance. I think you would all be amazed at how many of their songs you recognize. Freddie Mercury 's voice is amazing as is the rest of the band.
Can't you hear me screaming " play it!" 'Give me shelter' is bangin. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the two sides of the 60s. The Beatles were the Light and the Rolling Stones were the Dark.
Greatest Rock and Roll band in the world is their nickname. I've seen them 3 times most recently last year. They just completed their 60th year anniversary tour. Mick Jagger is 79, runs 9 miles a day and many, including myself say he's the greatest frontman in history. They have performed for more people than anyone in the world. Look up biggest tours of all time. Put it this way, at a New Jersey concert in 2012, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer OPENED for them.

@@donjackson5522 Very underrated show.
Every time I hear "Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stone's it reminds me of the Classic TV Series: "Tour of Duty"
Yes!!!! Me too
The real sad thing is that all of these guys are in their 70's and that tells you how long you've been missing them!
The Rolling Stones was my dad's favorite band. He passed away late 2019 and at his wake we played the song "Wild Horses" because it was a song he used to love singing to my mom, who also passed 14 years ago. It was our way of sending him off to finally be with her again. it was beautiful.
I'd like to see y'all react to that song. :)
Wild Horses is my favorite song 🎶 by the Stones
@@TanyaQueen182 I would too.
They definitely need to hear something else. What a contrast Wild Horses would be!! It’s always been my favorite and then Angie. Im sorry for your losses. My parents are gone too and Holidays so hard without them!
@@coffeenow35 mine too 😁👍🏻
❤
Great to see five nice looking young men listening to our music and appreciating! I'm a Child of the Sixties and of course I love the Rolling Stones then and now. 🎻🥁🎼🪕🎼🎻🥁🎼🥁🎻🪕🎼🎸🎼🎻
As they say, Music is a Universal language! Peace and Love to all! It can sure bring us together!!
I think these young men are amazing!
Seen them live once. Awesome band, tons of hits!
Time is on my side
Under my thumb
I agree totally! Both are wonderful!
You guys are SO FLIPPING CUTE. Absolutely love watching you discover classics!
I love y'alls videos. Each of you always comes across as being so genuine and real. Keep up the great work.
The Stones are definitely a rabbit hole you can easily go down, so many great songs and videos
This was a huge song around the Vietnam war ..great tune...there's so many great stones song...check out she's so cold, or sympathy for the devil..which just rocks💯🤟
it was also theme song in the tv series "Tour of duty"❤
Their best song is gimme shelter by far, the stones are all time greats and they came out basically the same year and as rivals of the Beatles. The stones have a deep catalog with songs like gimme shelter, sympathy for the devil, under my thumb and many more
Couldn't agree more. 👏
The fact that these young men are listening to Rolling Stones classics for the first time makes me feel really, really old.
Rolling STones - Sympathy for the Devil. it's a banger.
most popular and still one of their best "I Can´t Get No Satisfaction"
Studio version.Tough to do live.
@@wombatwilly1002 Watch the video "Satisfaction: Live in St. Louis." INCREDIBLE
@@josephclark4999 Hmmm I didn’t know about that! Thanks! I’ll check it out!
Oh my gosh! Thank You so much for that!! She sure deserves being mentioned and remembered!!
She also had a miscarriage the day after the recording session.
I can't say how much I love you listening and exploring different genres. I've seen The Stones 5 times. The energy Jagger has! Rock n Roll. They took their name from a Muddy Waters song, " A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss" Muddy Waters an absolute Legend!!
Jagger has just turned 80.....still rocking'n'rolling
I just stumbled on you guys. When I came to the US I learned English from old rock songs. Your reactions and authentic appreciation for the musicality of all songs is just darling. Thank you for making my great day even brighter!
They are pretty sweet and bring joy to me too! I’d love to meet them and turn them on to a lot of music!
Awesome reaction, the rolling stones were basically the darker version of the Beatles. Both of them are legendary bands.
Used to play this song repeatedly and sing it at the top of my lungs. I was grieving a loss at the time and it perfectly described my mood. Didn't know until just now that it was a song about the aftermath of losing a loved one. Wow. Child of the 70's here. Love you guys, love your show.
I love the dude standing in the back, absolute cool dude!
There's so many other songs you'll love more! "Satisfaction", "Sympathy For The Devil" & "Start Me Up". Try those from this iconic band.
Beast of Burden is my favorite song by them. Miss you, Gimme Shelter, Start me up etc. Are great amazing songs as well!
Beast of Burden is likely my favorite song of all time.
I think everything they did was great!
I hope the ROLLING STONES COME TO NYC OR NJ. I BEEN A FAN SINCE THE 1980s
I'm 71, been a faithful fan since I was 11
We British deliver some of the best music the world has ever known. Bands like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Free, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Def Leopard, Queen, Oasis, Black Sabbath, The Who, The Kinks, The Clash, Radiohead, Jethro Tull, Electric Light Orchestra, Cream, Blur, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Depech Mode, Dire Straits, The Police, Fleetwood Mac (original lineup), The Cult, et al.
This song was used for a tv series called: Tour of Duty. About army troops trying to survive their tour of duty in Vietnam. Very good.
This song always brings me memories of the show intro. It was on CBS, back in the ‘80s.
Yes! What a brilliant show. I remember watching reruns with my older brother when I was little. Because of that, I always interpreted the lyrics as being about a soldier returning from the Vietnam war (or any war really) and having a hard time readjusting, maybe dealing with PTSD.
When I hear this song I only think of Full Metal Jacket.
I remember Tour of Duty being good tv shown in the UK in the late 80s
Yup, watched that show growing up
This song, along with the movie "Full Metal Jacket" got me out of a DEEP depression in 2013.
It took a few years but I still have to be careful with it.
I’ve always called music my sanity saver lol and can’t live without it
Y’all are killing me with this one.
The greatest rock band ever! Saw them in 1962 on The Ed Sullivan show with my parents.
Not 62, too early, they weren't on Sullivan until 64.
@@randystanley7156 caught him lacking
The Rolling Stones and The Beatles came up around the same time in the early-1960s, and despite their perceived rivalry amongst the two groups' fanbases, they liked one another behind the scenes.
When all of you get the chance to do so, definitely react to "Start Me Up", from 1982. The music video is the primary inspiration for the recent hit song, "Moves Like Jagger". Mick Jagger is the lead singer for The Rolling Stones.
Stones ... best singles band ever....
This tune was also featured in a mini series titled Tour of Duty , a film about soldiers in Vietnam. You should view the series if you can. It was great.
One of the greatest songs on earth
You guys need to check out The Rolling Stones song "Gimme Me Shelter" --- the studio version. Its an incredible song - from the intro to the outro
They were right after the Beatles. They were still touring a couple of years ago. So many great songs 🎵
Rolling Stones' "SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL" Is Fire!!!!😎
The song is about the depression felt after the death of a friend / lover. The line that makes it most clear is the one about the line of cars that are all painted black -- a reference to a funeral.
I haven't checked out all of your videos but guarantee you that you will love the Stones. So much soul.
THE greatest rock band of all time. Yes, they are still together and still filling stadiums. Watch Sympathy For The Devil video.
In the 60's you where a Beatles or a rolling Stones fan. 2 of the greatest bands ever
Stones are better than the Beatles!!!!
That's a common fable - My parents, their friends tell it like this...most, if not all were fans of both bands...just like people were fans of most of the bands in the 60's. Sure one will have a favorite, but to say "it's this or that - can't have both" is collectively wrong!
I liked both
@@jamesbuckingham357 Thank You!!!! 😁👍🏻
Both. Forever both sides of life. Hope and despair.
So many great Stones songs. Give a listen to Gimme Shelter.
They have so many different styles, from the 60's thru 80's and 90's. Lots of number 1's! As the times changed so did they, they lasted tho.
I listened to this song over and over again after the death of my 16 year old son..an only child..
RIP 🙏🕊
Great band.
Listen to the Eagles singing Hotel California 👍👍👍 Awesome song The Eagles are in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame for one the best bands ever...
🙌
Yes guys, they are still alive and touring. The Beatles were first. Both great bands.
True... Northern Soul was huge in England in the 60's and 70's...
Impressive!
Yeah same with punk, the American scene in NYC, Cleveland and Detroit was several years before the British got involved in the genre.
They just kicked ass playing this in Houston NRG stadium in April! Blew 75000 fans away! I was there!
The Stones were the social rival to the Beatles. The Beatles got the more progressive hippies and the Stones got the more traditional rocker fanbase.
It all depends on how you do it."
The song seems to be about a lover who died:
"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" - The hearse and limos.
This is the first time i ever analyzed the words of the song. Thank you guys for covering it ❤
"Gimme Shelter" is their best rocker. "Sympathy for the Devil" is a close second. You guys would probably like "Under My Thumb" and "Get off of My Cloud" as well.
Sympathy for the Devil and She's so Cold by the Stones💜
The Rolling Stones have admitted to the darker aspect of their music. Of course they admitted it decades later after we made them rich legendary artists. No hate just some info. My dad use to listen to this song when I was a kid. He was always stoned lol
" we made them rich legendary artists." They were great!!
@@josephinesteele1338 They earned everything they got for sure
They're still touring in 2023 and are GREAT!!!!!
You guys should do Gimme Shelter by the stones and merry clayton, a soul singer. One of the greatest songs of all time
Still touring after 60 years and selling out every venue around the world. Iconic song from No 1 R&R band.
Miss You and Satisfaction. I was mesmerized by the Stones in 1978. They my jam.
As mentioned a ton already….Gimme Shelter is not only their best song, but one of the best openings to any song!
Great reaction guys. Rolling stones is an amazing band. I suggest reacting to Can't you hear me knocking!
You might want to check out the band Queen when you get a chance. I think you would all be amazed at how many of their songs you recognize. Freddie Mercury 's voice is amazing as is the rest of the band.
This song is used in the movie full metal jacket and it fits perfectly
Can't you hear me screaming " play it!"
'Give me shelter' is bangin. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the two sides of the 60s. The Beatles were the Light and the Rolling Stones were the Dark.
The Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band ever. Legends don't even begin to describe them
Still might argue the Beatles but the Stones definitely put out more quality music
