A great classic from the early eighties. One of those electronic/synth-pop bands that I never get tired of listening to, along with OMD*, Yazoo*, Depeche Mode* and New Order. Many men in the 80s, before and until today, wore make-up: Mick Jagger, Bowie, Freddy Mercury, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Kiss, New York Dolls, Alice Cooper, Prince, all the Hair Metal bands, Twisted Sister, Robert Smith (The Cure), Rammstein.... Just to name a few whose make-up is "obvious". And they can be straight, gay, bisexual, alien or god. They were just saying "f**k conventionality". (*) These three names are linked. After founding DM, Vince Clark let the band and founded Yazoo (later as well Erasure). He and the rest of Depeche Mode said they wanted to have a band to sound like Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD).
Aah...the early days of MTV right here. What a New Wave, Synth-Pop classic. One day, I'll let you check out some early Human League which is way different from Don't You Want Me and even the original members' other band Heaven 17. Also, this video is directed by Steve Barron who also directed the first Ninja Turtles movie as well as other early MTV classic videos like Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, Dire Straits' Money For Nothing and you an Tasha's favorite 80s song of all time, a-ha's Take On Me.
Tee is one lucky man!!! Tasha is just so cute always groovin to the song while most of the time Tee is over analyzes it. But that is what makes them a great watch
At the time this song came out, there were a number of high-profile criminal cases that changed the public perception of domestic violence. Before the 80s, it was nearly impossible to get law enforcement to even respond to a domestic call, and in some places, even in the UK and US, there weren't even laws protecting women in personal relationships. A rash of widely reported very bad incidents raised awareness of the situation, and songs like this were part of that trend, as artists took up the issue. This song and the video are both about what we now say is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do in life - break up with a man. Human League were famous for some brutally honest love songs. "Only Human" is pretty cynical, too, but not so scary.
I come from Sheffield where these are from, i met Phil (the singer) once, he stopped to talk to mi mate when we were hanging out, he was off to buy a lightbulb lol

I recommend "Too Nice To Talk To" by The Beat (The English Beat in the US pressings). Also "Intuition" by Linx. If you haven't heard them before. A lot more people are familiar with The Beat, as one of the Big Five of the British 2-Tone Ska revival (Madness, The Specials, The Selector, The Beat and Bad Manners), and the one which got the most traction in the US, but Linx rarely get mentioned. Intuition was their "one hit wonder", a super catchy soul number featuring steel drums, and another side of the Afro-Caribbean influence on UK music. You have to hear it, for the love of history. It's so good. And then try "Three Minute Hero" and "On My Radio" by The Selector.
She's right. Videos distract from the song. I wish more reaction channels would NOT use them. Just experience the music itself and tell us what it means for you, not how crazy the video was. This song is a rare exception because 99% of the time, videos have nothing to do with the lyrics or content of the song.
This song, lyrically, I think is excellent. You have a woman using a man to get ahead and once she tastes success she no longer needs or wants him, moving on to the BBD and he maybe took advantage of her situation as a cocktail waitress and can't let go. I'm a metal head and love this song. I've seen this dynamic in a ton of my friends relationships now in my 50's. Great review guys.
"True Colors" is not Cyndi's best song IMO. "I Drove All Night" was written for Roy Orbison but Cyndi released it first. It was the first time many of us realized she could actually sing. Driving drum beat and Cyndi just kills it with the vocals. Give T another chance to listen to her. You should also check out one of the most influential bands of the 80's - Roxy Music. Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time (written by The Hooters) is a much better song than True Colors. If you want a good song with the word Tue in it, try True by Spandau Ballet.
