A lot of people don't bother to look for music outside one or two genres, and/or won't think to listen to anything older than what they listened to in high school.
I think it's pretty sad due to my experience, but of course we're all raised differently. I was raised on Motown, so I definitely knew about the Jackson 5, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, etc.
I was also raised on artists like Al Jarreau, The Manhattan Transfer, Barry White, The Bee Gees, KC and The Sunshine Band, Journey, Gino Vanelli, Johnny Taylor, BB King, The Isley Brothers, Teddy Pendergrass, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight & The Pips, and more.
I'm always surprised by reactors whose parents/elders didn't introduce them to great and very well-known singers and musicians.

Everyone in the country watched The Ed Sullivan Show every Sunday evening for 27 years. It was what families did in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Ed was the most powerful celebrity on TV - he could make or break your career in a heartbeat. If he called you over after your performance to stand with him for a few seconds - you knew you made it. Every famous movie star, tv star, Broadway star, nightclub star, sports star, politician, circus star, ventriloquist, puppeteer, acrobats, writers, authors, playwright, etc. made an appearance on his show. A piece of Americana history.

The last song they did was a hit for them. They were together as a professional group for about 12 years. When they left Motown, Jermaine ( on Bass ) stayed with the label mainly because he was married to the daughter of the owner of Motown. Then the youngest brother ( Randy ) replaced Jermaine. They stayed together for a few more years until Michael went solo. The rest of the group member's went solo for a short time period, but were not very successful. Over the years while Michael was a solo act, he would still perform with his brother's on tour from time to time. All of the sister's ( Rebbie, LaToya and Janet ) had solo careers with Janet being the most successful. Michael was the youngest at 10 years old in this video.

If you want to see a young Janet, find Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 on the Carol Burnette show. At the time their father came up with the idea of the whole family doing a Las Vegas act. There were 10 children in the family, but one of their brother Brandon only lived one day. The Original Jackson 5 had brothers from oldest to youngest Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon (who was Brandon's twin) and Michael.
They also have another younger brother Randy who join the group later. They also have three sisters. Reba who by the time this came out was 19 and married, LaToya who was born before Marlon, and Janet who is the youngest in the family.

Love that you guys are checking out The Jackson 5! There are so many to watch from this era but if you want to see true contrast to when they were older and Michael was in his prime you could check out their Motown 25 Medley, it also has Billie Jean’s first live performance with the very first time he performed the moonwalk, it would be nice to see you react to it next!
A little background on them too: The Jackson 5 were always the boys, Janet was younger than Michael and was never in the band. The original were Jackie, Marlon, Tito, Jermaine & Michael, for a while Jermaine left and the youngest brother Randy joined, then Jermaine came back but at that point Michael was too big in his career so he officially left after their Victory tour and the rest carried on, then they were just The Jacksons, there was a lot of rivalry especially with Jermaine, he didn’t like Michael’s success and even made a whole diss track for him but it seems they ended up in good terms, they reunited in 2001 to perform again for the very last time at Michael’s 30th anniversary celebration, then after his death continued while always paying tribute to him. As for Janet she was never in the group but her and Michael do have a song together called Scream, I would say Michael was the closest to her. They seemed very happy on stage but behind them was their father Joseph who was very abusive to them, especially to Michael, and was the actual reason he started a career at just 5 years old, if they got anything wrong on rehearsals or on stage he would beat them up until they made no mistakes, not to mention the emotional and psychological abuse he put him through too. Michael clearly loved what he did but had no childhood because he spent all of it performing and that led to many issues for the rest of his life, so all of this got him to be the biggest star ever but also took a lot from him

Diana Ross introduced them in their first public appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and I was just blown away by Michael. The music industry must have just "chewed him up" for him to look like he did at the end compared to his natural self as a kid.

The Jackson 5 - a story of success due to pure talent of all 5 guys, good choice of songs and a violent abusive father who brutally beat them to the top.

Don't talk about Joe Jackson like that the man is no longer here with us, so put some respect on that man's name. There wouldn't be no Jackson 5 or Michael or Janet if it wasn't for that man. Yes, Joe Jackson was very strict. All fathers are, so stop making him the bad guy. Joe Jackson had a vision for his kids, and it was for them to be the best in the business.

@@Kamarre_HMichael had a light and joy in his eyes when performing back then. The media paints lot of narratives which mix fact and fiction. Spanking was how discipline was handled back then by lots of families right or wrong. JMHO.

Nobody lip synced on the Ed Sullivan show. This was definitely live. Ed Sullivan was must see TV for many years. The Jackson Five (led by Michael) were the hottest thing going for a while. Sad to look at it now though, when you know the whole story of abuse from their father. He was talented his whole life but it definitely came at a cost. He wasn’t having as much fun as it looked like he was. You might want to read up on that. J5 had some great songs ABC, The Love You Save and a bunch of others.

The Jackson 5 was the first concert that I ever saw. It was 1973 and I was 8 years old. I was fascinated to say the least. Of course I'd heard their records and seem them on TV but this was something else. Yes, they were famous and great singers but they were kids too. They were kids that looked me. I knew all of their names. Michael, Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie.

Jermaine Jackson was the first brother to leave the group to go solo in the late 1970s, and he had a few hits. They brought in their youngest brother (Randy) to replace Jermaine and renamed the group The Jacksons. The older brothers are still performing as "The Jacksons" and singing the oldies, with their children. Randy Jackson works for Janet as a manager. They are the two youngest children out of 10 or 11 and, therefore, have a close relationship.

I remember watching this at the time. I have seen it countless times since then and I am STILL blown away by how talented the J5 was, especially MJ. It's other worldly for a little kid to be THAT talented. Jermaine (the singing guitar player) went on to have a great solo career and the rest of them became the Jacksons and did pretty well. 💛

Put some respect on Jermaine too, he was the other brother playing bass and singing co-lead. He was the only other brother in the group to have major solo success while still in the group and after he left the group in 75.

I don't think we (my siblings and I), took one single breath the entire performance, thinking we might miss something!😅 The following day(Monday) at school EVERYBODY was ecstatic, asking each other, "Did you see the J-5 last night?" We couln't believe our eyes or ears...this was the 1st time EVER a black singing group of youngsters were showcased on national TV!! YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE TO KNOW WHAT THOSE OF US WHO WITNESSED IT ARE TALKING ABOUT!!

Yep, as a child he was a belter. His rendition of Ain’t No Sunshine is fantastic. Additionally, when he realised his voice would change as he grew into adulthood, he started to experiment with different sounds, egg the falsetto, the word changes etc. but always, always pitch perfect
