I love seeing people react to this song. So many people know it but never pay attention to the lyrics. As a kid I loved this song we used to sing it all the time. I remember when I first actually heard and understood the lyrics it was the same reaction! Rupert had a couple other hits, The other one we loved as kids was called Him. And there are others but I can't think of them right now.
But notice She had already planned on cheating and it was only luck that lead the man to her...underneath the text and cool tune, their is a serious side to a broken trust in a relationship
Two thoughts about this song. The sale of Pina Coladas skyrocketed after this song came out. Also, Rupert Holmes remarked that it was played on the radio so much that if he ran into a burning building, saved a baby and ran outside, people would look at him and say, "Aren't you the guy who did the Pina Colada song"?
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The look on both your faces when it clicked was awesome ! People that say they don't like this song i guarantee are singing right along with every word when they're alone in the car and it comes on the radio.
This song is still Rupert Holmes' biggest hit song ever!!! The song has the dubious distinction of being the very last #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart of the 1970s according to Billboard Magazine. Cheesy as it is, this song is still popular to this day. A banger of a song indeed!!!
Thank you for your reaction to this song. The moment you understood what he was singing about is priceless! Yes, before any sort of online dating apps there were personal ads in newspapers. He was looking for the same darn thing she was (she posted the ad he replied to). My impression is if they had bothered to actually talk to each other they've have known. What a surprise to find out hey, it was his own lovely lady and he said "I never knew". :)
It was the last number one song of 1979 and was also number one the second week of 1980 making it the only song to be number one in two different decades consecutively-the best song ever written in my opinion and Rupert’s album Partners in Crime one of the all time best albums listen to the drums bass and guitars a perfect song!!
Always love to see first reactions to the whole song! Remember, they were BOTH on the prowl for some 'strange'. It did re-ignite their passion for each other, and weirder things happen in real life.
I remember this coming on the radio when I was a kid in the car with my parents all the time. I never knew how complex it was until I was much older. Great to see others react to stuff like this. Thanks!
Yeah. I remember this on the radio. It was very, very popular, back in the 1970's. Thanks, guys. Nice look back. I am still watching ya and diggin it. Love you guys. Peace, Y'all.
Your reactions are priceless. Knowing the youth of today really gets into the older music just makes me feel so fortunate this was the music i grew up on. Back then our reactions was the same but then different because we didn't have some of the crap music of today for comparison. Back then there was so many good tunes we just took it for granted, now we know how good it really was and you're proof of that... thanks.
Hi guys! Im 70. Before the days of the internet, before the days of the local BBS's, people seeking out other folks had to either:1./ put a short ad in the Sunday section, of the newspaper, not those freebie things in the supermarket; or, in the supermarket was a cork board with old car salles, apts for rent, and yup people and phone numbers!! Oh, the adventures that, if you chose to, awaited.
Rupert Holmes had a few hits, Escape being one of them. Another of his that could be categorized as 'guilty pleasure ' is called Him. It could be seen as scandalous when you hear it. Check that one out for your live stream.
Oh heck, I grew up hearing this! Especially at the roller rink. It was amazing to skate to. But nobody ever had to explain it to us. We got the message. Ears open. Pay attention and appreciate!!! 😊
I remember hearing this as a kid, still has awesome lyrics even for me at 57 now. One of those songs that you know will be around in another 100 years 😁😁
It's a great laid back tune and Rupert Holmes really sells the story. The fact that so many don't actually listen to the lyrics beyond the "Do you like pina colada" hook is unfortunate not only because of the fun twist but because, underneath the surface, it actually says something quite insightful about long term relationships; it is way too easy to fall into "dull old routines", to forget the excitement and the reasons why you got together, and to stop seeing your partner as a lover but instead as that boring and slightly irritating housemate! If a shock doesn't come along to reignite the spark and memory of why you are together the drift can become terminal. Although written from the man's perspective and his recognising that it was "kind of mean" that he didn't think of his "lady", it's worth remembering that it was she who initiated the exchange in the personal column--so presumably had the same feelings of boredom and sought escape. Folks, don't forget your partner's human too and remember the days walking hand in hand along the beach next time you argue about whose turn it is to empty the bin (or trash can for our American cousins) or you could get a surprise next time you scroll through Tinder!
It cracks me up everytime I want some react to this song and not realize what it's about. The whole song revolves around communication in a relationship where nobody is talking about what they want or what they need or what they evolve to. If you're not willing to tell your partner your wants and your needs then your relationship is not going to go anywhere. That's why I love watching you guys because you have such a good dynamic and our evolving and growing with these reaction channels. I love watching you guys react to movies
You need to watch the behind the scenes video about this song. A total series of goof ups. And the pina colida line was a last second change. It was originally written as Hum-pher-y Bogart but it had one too many syllables.
He’s sort of a one hit wonder. I loved his follow up ‘Answering Machine’. He also wrote at least one entire full musical for Broadway (The Mystery of Edwin Druid, which is sort of like an Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes musical), possibly others.
ive heard this song idk how many times on tv shows and movies, i never had looked or listened to the lyrics lol. tbh the song is way better then i thought it would be for being such overly used song.
I love to see you guys reaction on these new songs that I used to hear all my young life and seeing you guys making the reactions of your face is so cute and awesome God loves
Of course I heard this song a million times growing up. I only saw the video in recent years, but he looks very specifically like a middle school science teacher.
I read a funny article one time about this song, and how Rupert Holmes basically can't "escape" it: He said that he could rescue someone from a burning building, and when he came out, the firemen would say, "Didn't you do the pina colada song?"
LOL! Yall are awesome! She choked up... LOL Yeah this is a TACKY tune! LOL He always was a musical wonder... BIG song back in the day. Never heard another song from Rupert, sadly! He was "Nerd Cool" HaHa Cheers yall
around the time this came out, i was in a local college folk venue listening to an acoustic performer who did not think much of the song. he started playing the song, but changed the lyrics to "Rupert Holmes is an *ssh*l*/He blew his mind on cocaine..."
I love seeing people react to this song. So many people know it but never pay attention to the lyrics. As a kid I loved this song we used to sing it all the time. He did a song about cannibalism as well, Timothy. He wrote it, but I don't think he recorded it.
Him is actually a better song! So great!
@@doubleubee7523I like the one about an Answering Machine better. 😉
"last of the romantics" is one I like
I didn't until last year and I'm 49?
y'all caught on quick. congrats!
They realized they still had a lot to learn about each other. Cute story and good lesson
But notice She had already planned on cheating and it was only luck that lead the man to her...underneath the text and cool tune, their is a serious side to a broken trust in a relationship
@LordEriolTolkien they needed to get to know each other better and really trust each other with what they really want. Thats the lesson

Also, Rupert Holmes remarked that it was played on the radio so much that if he ran into a burning building, saved a baby and ran outside, people would look at him and say, "Aren't you the guy who did the Pina Colada song"?
I love it when people "get" what the song is about. Great reaction.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The look on both your faces when it clicked was awesome ! People that say they don't like this song i guarantee are singing right along with every word when they're alone in the car and it comes on the radio.

It was also the #1 Hit of the 1980’s. It started on the chart for several weeks.
Thank you for your reaction to this song. The moment you understood what he was singing about is priceless! Yes, before any sort of online dating apps there were personal ads in newspapers. I’ve watched quite a few reactions to this and you two are the first to get the big reveal before it’s revealed! That was fun!
Was thinking the same thing
It was so awesome that you guys figured it out early. 😅
This is by far one of your best reactions lol.
It was the last number one song of 1979 and was also number one the second week of 1980 making it the only song to be number one in two different decades consecutively-the best song ever written in my opinion and Rupert’s album Partners in Crime one of the all time best albums listen to the drums bass and guitars a perfect song!!

Rupert Holmes was the writer of the Jets' song "You got it all" from 1986.
One of my favorites to watch people react to for the first time 😂
I remember this coming on the radio when I was a kid in the car with my parents all the time. I never knew how complex it was until I was much older. Great to see others react to stuff like this. Thanks!

Yah, listened along as a kid despite never having had a pina colada in my life.
@@LordEriolTolkien me neither, but I saw em in the movies and on "The Love Boat".
I saw an interview with him & he said he HATES Pina Coladas, but every time he was in a bar people would buy him one because of this song! 😆
Your reactions are priceless. Knowing the youth of today really gets into the older music just makes me feel so fortunate this was the music i grew up on. You mentioned they put this in a kid's movie. I was 10 when this song came out and it was played non-stop on radio. I knew exactly what it was about.
Back before AIDS came along Swingers and songs about Swingers were all around you. This song was actually a #1 hit.
Love the story of this song and the catchy tune. Rupert Holmes is an award-winning novelist now. I guess creativity just runs in his genes.
Cool I didn't know that!
Brilliant ending. I love Pina Coladas. The best one I ever had was in Virginia Beach, they put ice cream in it.
This song is about the first of the "three C's" that make any relationship work: communication, commitment, and compromise. Don't forget that.
cool statement and true!
You’re the first reactors I have seen that got it before the reveal. Well done!
This song has the greatest plot twist ever lol. If you have ever seen the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, it's in there too.
Oh I think the best plot twist is Billy Currington's 'People are Crazy.' ... absolutely hysterical
Such a crack up that y'all both caught on to the twist at the same time and before the next verse! I'm impressed
Same here. I am impressed also that they both caught what was going to happen before he sang it

He did another great song called '' Him '' good melody, great voice, you would both like it ❤
he looks like a middle school science teacher.
Boring loser at work
Awesome singer at night
Radio! That’s what Rupert Holmes reminds me of. Thought this song was so funny when I was a little kid. Brings back nice memories. ❤
Definitely yacht rock. Listening to on my yacht drinking a Pina Colada.
I loved the reaction. This is song is a yacht rock anthem. Add it to your yacht rock playlist.
I was in the 4th grade when this song was huge. It was playing in the elevator at the radio station in the movie "Detroit Rock City" LOL
Rupert Holmes had a few hits, Escape being one of them. Another of his that could be categorized as 'guilty pleasure ' is called Him. It could be seen as scandalous when you hear it. Check that one out for your live stream.
Awesome reaction guys!! ❤
Song was also in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guys, he has another interesting song called “Him”. Definitely worth listening to.
Oh heck, I grew up hearing this! Especially at the roller rink. It was amazing to skate to. But nobody ever had to explain it to us. We got the message. Ears open. Pay attention and appreciate!!! 😊

"Aw, it's you!" - what a farce!
I just turned 61 wow first heard this so long ago Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺. Always enjoy your reactions, take care guy's. 🙂
They learned there was more to each other, and they had more in common, than either realized. Unfortunately they can never trust each other again. 🤷🏻

Being a teenager when this came out it made me smile when I heard it on Guardians of the Galaxy. Great fun with the refrain.
Awesome. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great reaction. I'm impressed that you both figured out the twist before he sang that part

The older music just had so many stories to tell
Another song that Rupert Holmes wrote but did not sing was “Timothy” by the Bouys. Definitely a different vibe.
it's a Beautiful song, it brings back Great memories, and I have No guilt for loving it .
Hell yeah! Great reaction y’all!
This is another one of those type 70’s/early 80’s songs that hip hop has sampled from. Cool vibe and story.
Rupert rocking that substitute teacher look :p
Every single time I hear this song, I picture the two meeting up at The Regal Beagle.
lol
:-)
The joy of y'all discovery the story of the song really made me smile. 👍👍👍
The bass player Ron Moss has played a character Ridge in a favorite soap opera Bold And Beautiful
Love this song!! ❤
I never get tired of this song! Grew up listening to it, singing every word... but didn't have a clue what the lyrics meant 😂
Great reaction and funny how you both figured it out at the same time :)
Dude singing looks like he's at the local dive bar singing karaoke 😅
Another Rupert Holmes hit you should hear is "Him".
It's also featured in THE SWEETEST THING with Cameron Diaz - during the road trip scene!
You need to watch the behind the scenes video about this song. A total series of goof ups. And the pina colida line was a last second change. It was originally written as Hum-pher-y Bogart but it had one too many syllables.
The End of the year 1979, this was very popular.
1979's last #1 hit on BB hot 100
That was a cool reaction! 👍
He’s sort of a one hit wonder. I loved his follow up ‘Answering Machine’. He also wrote at least one entire full musical for Broadway (The Mystery of Edwin Druid, which is sort of like an Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes musical), possibly others.
Also a great wedding song :P
Rupert coming in HARD!
Great stuff you 2, love it, XO. All the best.
ive heard this song idk how many times on tv shows and movies, i never had looked or listened to the lyrics lol. tbh the song is way better then i thought it would be for being such overly used song.

Greatest reaction song of all time!
Of course I heard this song a million times growing up. I only saw the video in recent years, but he looks very specifically like a middle school science teacher.
First time listening to you, loved the reaction!
Tasha is always beautiful but today she's absolutely stunning.
Gotta love how he looks like a chemistry teacher lol
I read a funny article one time about this song, and how Rupert Holmes basically can't "escape" it: He said that he could rescue someone from a burning building, and when he came out, the firemen would say, "Didn't you do the pina colada song?"

When your English teacher has a side hustle! 😅
Giving out grades at work
Giving women a good time at night
It's actually not scandalous. They found out they really didn't know each other and they have more in common then they thought.
Revenge of the Nerds. A guy who looks like a high school math teacher gets a hit song - nice!
I love the story telling in the old songs.
I love watching her move to that song.
Rupert zHolmes is a master wordsmith! Give a listen to HIm, another of his tunes. 😊
It’s impressive how this rather basic dude still holds your attention as he simply walks around an odd stage - that’s good songwriting
Apparently they both forgot that they intended to cheat on eachother.😂
So they can't really be mad at each other. This song shows how important it is for couples to communicate with each other.
Geeze Louise you two rock!
Your reaction to this was the best of all
A song about cheating on your spouse by cheating with your spouse.
I always loved this song.
A great song .Need to react to Rupert Holmes Him it a great by him
On the way home in the car all that shit started sinking in and one or both said "HEY! YOU WERE TRYNA CHEAT!"
Loved your reaction!!!😂😂
💃💃☘️☘️
He had another hit in 1980 called Him.
Man I remember my parents having this 8 track. The song answering machine is great too
Great reaction! They played this in the first Shrek movie.
The ultimate bittersweet song.
Chris Farley “we need some bar fighting music!”😂😂😂😂😂
The ultimate "staycation" song.
around the time this came out, i was in a local college folk venue listening to an acoustic performer who did not think much of the song. he started playing the song, but changed the lyrics to "Rupert Holmes is an *ssh*l*/He blew his mind on cocaine..."
His second song that was popular was called "Him". Check it out. The theme might be familiar. 🤣
