Great reaction! One of the best pop songs ever written. Funny story, TFF were in the final stages of recording 'Songs From the Big Chair', when Roland Orzabal (sp?) came up with this little two-chord vamp. Their producer heard it, loved it, and encouraged him to develop it into a song. He wasn't very interested, who can blame him, he'd just recorded a very complicated album, but the producer convinced him to give it a shot. Turned out to be one of the defining songs of the '80s and the biggest hit TFF ever had. You just never know when and where lightning will strike. ^_~
Their lyrics "So glad we almost made it, So sad they had to fade it.." That's a jab at the radio industry at the time, that asked them to cut off like 8 seconds of their song, otherwise they'd have to fade it out. Not only is it an awesome song with deep meaning, it goes even deeper with that little Easter Egg lyric they put in. Nobody got to hear the full complete version on the radio back then, they literally did fade it out.
@@blaze1148 No, the lyric literally says fade it. It was a jab at the radio stations that told them their song was a bit too long for their allowed radio time slot, and if they didn't shorten the song then they would have to fade it out early.
I enjoyed how she got excited about the phone booth. I'm an old G and when I tell my kids that back in the day we had at least 15 to 20 phone numbers committed to memory and they think it's impossible to remember that many phone numbers.
The have a live version they performed fairly recently. They sound just as amazing as they did back in the 80s. 40 years later and still killing it. Check it out
I wore this song out back in the 80s. I played it all the time. I never get tired of it. Tears for Fears was my favorite band "back in the day". Love your reaction!
It’s those first few bars of the intro that hook you into this song which for me personally is possibly thee best pop song ever recorded because you had to be a young person living through this 1980’s decade to appreciate what you were listening to at the time.
You should also check out “Sowing The Seeds Of Love”, and “Woman In Chains” from the album after this one. Tears for Fears first three albums were all incredible.
05:08 __ You mention, "Dollar forty-five for gas," from back in the 80s. When I was in high school in the mid/late 60s, gas was 25-cents a gallon. I drove a Volkswagen Beetle with a 10-gallon tank. A fill-up was $2.50 and would last a week! ;o)
I think the meaning of the song is that when you're free and able to indulge every whim - flying a glider, riding bikes in the desert, driving a convertible sports car...unburdened with worries about work, illness, politics...you feel like the world is in the palm of your hand. Everybody aspires to be the king of his own kingdom...everybody wants the luxury of time, health, money to live unburdened by worldly things. It is a feel good song - I agree with that sentiment. It is these young guys who were living that kind of lifestyle when they wrote and performed this song. And it was symbolic of the '80s - a decade thought of as a time of greed and over indulgence (somewhat unfairly IMHO). These guys were lov'n life and they were singing about it. Great song - fresh faced young guys enjoying good clean living.
Way B4 the Goddamn World lost their addled minds! I was in my 2nd year @UArizona. What great times, not like now with this Asylum CLuster F*uck Mess. Good grief.
They put out a new album of ALL NEW MUSIC in 2022 and it's incredible. They sound better now than they did in the '80s. The album is called "The Tipping Point," and though the entire album is great, make sure to watch the official videos for "Break The Man," "The Tipping Point," and "Rivers of Mercy" (be prepared to cry for the last one). Also find a live version of My Demons during the 2022 US tour (they went to the UK, too, but the lighting isn't as good). Loved the song, but the stage lighting in the US was mind blowing. Yay for y'all enjoying TFF!!
This song has a beachy vibe for me, especially since back in the song's heyday in the 80's, I heard it blasting from a stereo while at the beach in Galveston, Texas. That memory has always stuck in my mind for me. A good memory I must say.
These guys discovered Oleta Adams singing in a club here in Kansas City one night after one of their concerts. She had a hit song in the late 80's or 90 called "Get Here"
Great song from one of the best bands and albums of that era, they have many good tunes, try Head Over Heels next, they have incredible vocals and a crack band that continues to this day. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Tears For Fears are Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. Curt sings lead vocal on Everybody Rules The World, but Roland sings the majority of their songs. Check out the glorious Woman In Chains which has Roland on lead vocal, the song has become a feminist anthem. Also check out Advice For The Young At Heart with Curt on lead Vocal, or Head Over Heels (Roland) or check out The Tipping Point which was released in 2022 and has both Curt and Roland singing throughout.
The phone booth, restaurant and dinosaurs were in a town called Cabazon. The restaurant and phone booth are gone, but the dinosaurs are still there. When he is singing by what looks like the ocean is probably actually the Salton Sea. And the sand dunes are just north of Palm Springs.
I was at a punk & metal concert here in Seattle last month and as the road crew were setting up between bands, this song played on the speakers so they turned the volume up and the crowd went bonkers as one of the road guys preteneded to sing this on an unplugged microphone 😂😂😂 it was a hoot
The sports car in the video is an Austin-Healey 3000. A car built from 1959 to 1967. My dad back in the late '50s owned the model that preceded it, the Austin-Healey 100-4. The most obvious visual difference between the two was the shape of the grill.
*Michael Jackson loved this song so much he stole/borrowed/used it's bassline in 'The Way You Make Me Feel' two years later in 1987 (as confirmed by his producer Quincy Jones)*
growing up with 60's music I shocked myself when as i got in my 40's I could love this 80's stuff, It makes me smile to hear this, and I play it often, those were the years before the old bod starting giving out! 75 now!
This came out in 1985. $1.45 would have been expensive for gas then. I remember when I started driving in 1992, I could get get for $.99 on Long Island, NY.
This is my favorite song from these guys. Head Over Heels, followed by Mad World is next. Shout is also very good, but for me it's one of those songs that I don't appreciate until I hear it again (does that make sense?) - like, if I am scrolling through my playlist, I'll look at Shout and think "meh", but if I actually PLAY it, then I remember why it's good. Another good one is Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down).
Welcome to Gen X’s coming of age. The 80’s were so innocent with a promise of bliss. That would soon change, but I’ve the best memories of my wild experience! The 80’s were AWESOME❤❤❤
This song is played at the end of the underrated teen comedy college flick “Real Genius” from I think 1983. If you two watch this movie one day, stay with it up til the ending and you will hear “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” Great reaction. Thanks. BTW: I was an 80’s teenager. This video was played on MTV in heavy rotation back in the 1980’s.

They are still killing it…..” Tipping Point”, new album. Two great singers and talented band.Try “ Shout” or “ Head Over Heels”…. Two other great hits.
This topped the charts at #1 in 1985, along with their other #1 mega hit Shout. Both from the album Songs From The Big Chair, one of the biggest selling albums of the 80s. And one of my personal favorites.

I agree
It's a great song but the best. NO ruclips.net/video/Lo2qQmj0_h4/видео.html

Roland Orzabal is an underappreciated guitarist. Imho, Tears for Fears is one of the most musically talented groups ever!
Their lyrics "So glad we almost made it, So sad they had to fade it.."

This song was so 80s, it was all over the radio back in the day. As relevant as it was back in the 80s, it's still just as relevant today.
The have a live version they performed fairly recently. They sound just as amazing as they did back in the 80s. 40 years later and still killing it. Check it out
If you're talking about the anniversary performance, holy CRAP! They haven't lost a step! ^_^
saw it and was shocked at how it sounded so good for their age! It was easy as good as original
Saw them live on the Tipping Point Tour last summer. They were amazing 😊
I knew that bro
It's such a well written, well performed song.
Possibly the quinnessential 80s pop song. An absolute classic gem

It was massive, in both the UK and USA. Real feel-good.
Saw them last year and they still sound great. Probably gonna see them again in July. This song is one of the best pop songs period.
Let's all go back to the 80's. PLEASE!!!
Tears For Fears had a bunch of bangers.
So good! This is such a quintessential 80's sound.

wow
So, according to Quincy Jones, this is the song that inspired Michael Jackson to write "The Way You Make Me Feel." The groove is very similar.
So sad we lost Quincy Jones (Soul Bossanova was great) last year.
Nice to hear some 80's reaction. A great decade for music.
They had several mega hits in the 80’s. One of the best bands from the decade.
I showed this song to my 8 year old granddaughter and now she loves it too.

Why would a metal head not enjoy this song?
THE TITLE IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE ABOUT OUR WORLD !!!
It was played at the end of the movie "Real Genius" featuring Val Kilmer.
About time you did some new wave. Also a lot of it is melancholy, sad/happy. Dance music.
