In South Jersey and Philadelphia folklore in the United States, the Jersey Devil (also known as the Leeds Devil) is a legendary creature said to inhabit the forests of the Pine Barrens in South Jersey. The creature is often described as a flying biped with hooves, but there are many variations. The common description is that of a bipedal kangaroo-like or wyvern-like creature with a horse- or goat-like head, leathery bat-like wings, horns, small arms with clawed hands, legs with cloven hooves, and a forked or pointed tail. It has been reported to move quickly and is often described as emitting a high-pitched "blood-curdling scream"

As a New Jersey native, I'm well aware of the Jersey Devil, origin and all. The other states love to make jokes about us but we take it because we know they're all jealous of our literal hellspawn of a cryptid and other strangeness worthy of its own magazine (cough, cough, Weird NJ).
Considering some of the other options are things like frog men, smelly monkey, Bigfoot alternative, or another dog man, y'all are doing pretty well with a devil mutant.

Well, to be fair, there are other states in the Lower 48 that have their own flying nightmares roaming about, such as West Virginia's Mothman, and the Van Meter Visitor in Iowa. And then there are stories of flying sasquatches and the "Turkey Creek Flying Creature." I've even talked with folks who claimed to have seen flying humanoids during their childhood up in Washington or Oregon. I've even seen the Jersey Devil once when I went with my aunt to a family get-together in the Pine Barrens, and from that day forward I came to realize that there are some things in this world that we're better off not knowing about and leaving alone

If you are in the area the devil frequents(the pine barrens) head to a town called New Gretna and eat at a place called Alan's Clam Bar. Zero atmosphere but it doesn't matter because it is the best seafood you will ever get.

I mean, it's about 8 hours of driving, but if I do find myself there I hope to remember that comment.
Which is unlikely, but on my way back I'd definitely remember that there once was a suggestion about damn good seafood I saw, that'll suck.

Alan's is about 20 minutes north of Atlantic City right on the bay. It is all amazing but nothing beats a bowl of Manhattan Clam Chowder before a bucket of steamed clams served with lemon , butter and hot sauce followed by striped sea bass and chips and hush puppies.
My cousin Beth who is in fact a svelte woman gets a bowl of lobster chowder(not bisque but they have that too) a bucket of steamed clams and three deep fried lobster tails with a side order of hush puppies. She usually moves into the gym for a week after the feast.
They do sell desert but I have never seen anyone have enough room left to eat it in the restaurant.

This is one of my favorite cryptids. When I was younger I did believe it existed because of how unique and how many people saw it in seemingly public places.

Fun fact, my family was a part of the Monster Quest Jersey Devil hunt. (If you look in the episode you can see a black rusted out jeep, that was our old woods truck) and it was hilarious to be a part of. They legitimately just fimed us hunting for a day, and as a kid I found it to be the most scuffed episode I watched. Still have fond memories, and our hunting hall still has the poster up, and I'm sure I could find my shirt I got from the production staff.
Jersey native here, we both love and sometimes truly fear this creature. My parents have paintings of the Jersey Devil around the house and posters, most of the artwork shown actually. My favorite as a young child was always the sassy one w the suit lol. Glad you guys pointed it out. My friend and I used to drive trucks through the Pine Barrens for fun around 12-2am and we swear to God that we saw red eyes one night. We booked it outta there and never went back again late. I have chills typing this 😂

DK I went to high school with Martin Brouder’s nephew. His brother married a American woman & at some point they moved to the state I live in. Anyway I’m a hockey fan, knew his nephew, had classes with him & hung out with him, never asked about hockey or if he was related. One day I was wearing a Avalanche shirt and he goes “my uncle’s a goalie in the NHL.” I was shocked & asked if his uncle was Martin Brouder & he goes yep. Got to meet him & got a autograph, the devils were in town playing the hurricanes so Martin comes by his brothers house to say high to his family.

Neat little tidbit, the image that is shown when talking about Lord Cornbury is not, like, something that was published at the time. It was published in a Brazilian magazine called Lampião da esquina, specifically number 9, from February 1979. And the magazine does not seek to criticize or expose Cornbury's crossdressing as a bad thing. It simply uses it as another piece of historical evidence to support the acceptance of cross dressers in society.

Hi guys! Im big into the spooky shit but still apply the super power called common sense. A few people believe the jersey devil isnt a living creature, but more paranormal ghost type hauntings. More than likely the thirteenth baby did come out grotesque, and unfortunately was "put to rest" and the amount of negativity, possible cursing the child in the womb led to the creation of "jersey devil" which would be in laymans term a negative entity similar to a demon. However thats assuming all the spiritual stuff is...ya know...real. but wonderful halloween episode, and i would personally love an episode on the giant bones and the knowledge cartel that is smithsonian museum
EDIT: DK cryptozoology is, yes, looking for creatures however the correct translation, crypto being mystery/elusive and zoology, the study of creatures. For every jersey devil nessie and bigfoot, there are coelacanths, the kermit frogs and possibly a tasmnian tiger unless aussies hoaxed it.
