    Personally I think object mon make sense considering japan’s culture. There’s literally an entire type of yokai which are literal objects with souls and sentience. There’s actually quite a lot from curtains that will strangle you too paper walls with thousands of eyes.

    Pokemon designs are so much more creative than people give credit for. Even the ones that are easy punching bags have a lot of thought put into.
    My favorite example is Klefki. It’s not a keychain, it’s a fairy that steals people’s keys. Even the hole where it’s mouth would be is a keyhole and a cleft palate. Which is where “Klef” comes from.

    My favorite headcanon about most object Pokémon is that humans modelled their tools and technology off of existing Pokémon. People see a lampent or chandelure giving off light while hanging about a tree? Why not create a fancy light source that you can hang in your own home? Wow, that bronzong over there sure is making a lot of noise trying to scoop up those berries, maybe we can use a similar design to make loud noises for communication! Of course, it doesn’t work for all object pokemon like banette or polteageist, but it’s a lot of fun to think about.

    Object Mons.
    My favorite pokemon trope. It has even turned into my favorite creature trope. I started a worldbuilding project inspired by Pokemon where all the new creatures there are *solely* inanimate objects turned animate in an animal-like way. Stuff like an anglerfish fishing rod, a sword fish (literally), a Volkswagen beetle turned into a beetle, ringbuoy fish, a chameleon fountain pen, etc. In total, I have made *85* of these creatures as of the time of writing this post. Some of them are bit a miss, but there has been some bullseyes I'm really proud of.
    Actually, your Needlish has even become a source of inspiration for one of my creatures, as me and my friend have turned a thermometer (both a digital one and a mercury one) into fish. I posted two examples of my creature designs in my community section (and in one of my tumblr blogs) an plan on posting more.
    About the worldbuilding project I mentioned a couple sentences ago, it's actually an alternate timeline of our world where objects suddenly became gaining sentience in this Pokemon-esque manner where they would partially become animals, and I'm working on a story that delves into the philosophical part of that.
    Feel free to ask me about anything related to this project or the creatures and I might answer.

      @DevilSpider_ Год назад +3

      @Phantom Gato Thinking about it, the concept is almost like tsukumogami but on steroids. It's kinda fun to imagine how human society adapts these creatures into their everyday lives. Large sentient snake trains slithering through railroads, the youngest of children learning how to read and write using a sentient chameleon-like fountain pen, walking cameras on tripods ready to take pics of tourists for them, ringbuoy fish rushing in to save someone who fell into a river etc. Even though they all boil down to a simple "animal + thing" formula, I add a small amount of worldbuilding with each design.

I think Pokemon is unapologetically all over the place with its designs and that's one of its biggest strengths, there's truly something for everyone whether you like pink fluffy animals, big spiky dinosaurs, or a literal living fridge. I feel like this is where many other monster collectors fall short a bit, they stick too much to a singular theme and artistic vision, which might look consistent and pleasant aesthetically, but at the same time leaves you with little reason to get invested if that particular style just doesn't happen to be your thing.

    Personally, I'm fine with object mons.
    Some can feel lazy at times (Voltorb and Electrode for example as despite being the first, having limited sprite area or whatever and also being some of the first mimics to not just be a chest, they really are jud
    St balls with faces), but then you get things like the Litwick line and the Beldum line. Object mons that are almost always seen as badass.
    Also, I do have to ask sometimes "what else were they gonna be?" for example, Vanilluxe. When I hear people complaining about it, I just think to myself "what else was the ice cream Pokemon going to be? A wooly mammoth because ICE age?". The original version of this paragraph was much more aggressive in tone so I chilled it down and shortened it btw.
    If you don't like them, that's perfectly fine, I doubt everyone is gonna start loving Garbodour after this comment, but please don't use "it's just (blank)" as an excuse for why a Pokemon is bad, because you could literally point at any Pokemon and say it's just blank. Tinkaton is just Hammer Kirby, Girantina is just Satan, Charizard is just a dragon, Eevee is just a generic mammal, Meowth is just a cat, etc.

      Voltorb and Electrode are the first time in a long time that the game's treasure mimic monster is more then just a treasure chest. As bland as they are they are actually a lot more creative then people realize.
      Klefki is an 2 stage mon at least, where it starts as a single key then becomes the ring. This also fits into fairies getting into the house to steal things.
      Garbodour is a case of devolution. It becomes (to some, nothing wrong with liking it) repulsive and less suited for the role it was filling prior. All I was expecting was it to make sense such as handling trash better not worse.
      In the case of ice cream it would make sense to be more then a cone as more complex ice creams tend to go away from that. Or if you want to stay a cone adding colored variation to it like actual ice cream has.
      The issue a lot, but not all, object mons face is they are often little more then their objects in how they are presented or fail to expand on the use of the object in a meaningful way.

    I like object mons, they imply one or two things about the pokemon world. Either the pokemon evolved to look like an object to better survive or humans saw the pokemon and made an object that resembled it. However legends arceus gives a possible third scenario that i personally think is true. Humans wanting a ball to capture pokemon in, designed it after voltorb due to them being a ball. Overtime, however, the pokeballs got more advanced and changed design, this in turn made the voltorb line evolve (in the real world sense) to match the new design. And it makes sense for them to evolve this way too as I'm sure wild pokemon avoid pokeballs, so looking like one would make your predators avoid you.

    My headcanon is that the real world objects the object Pokémon are inspired by, are inspired by the object Pokémon in the Pokémon universe. If that makes sense. For example, klink’s design is inspired by cogs in the real world, but someone in the Pokémon universe looked at the anatomy of klink and thought “hey, that’s a very efficient design” and then made the cog.

    I think we should focus the discussion at what makes a good object mon. There are some i love, there are some i hate. We shouldn't condemn all object mons as bad, because well... there are some that the community loves, but they just happen to be left out of the discussion, while the ones, that the community hates always come up when that toppic is brought up. I am certain, that i will look through the comments and someone will bring up garbodor as why they are bad, while there will be hardly any comments against object mons that will mention rotom or any of the gen 1s.

    Love this video, especially realizing most of your “object” mons maybe aren’t actually. Anyways, I had some ideas for type names since you said you wanted ideas for those in a previous vid (I think). Ok, here goes:
    Fairy = Fae (you might have done this one already)
    Electric = Volt/Charge
    Ice = Frigid/Frozen
    Fighting (if it stays in the chart) = Martial
    Psychic = Mystic
    Ghost = Spectre/Spirit
    Dark = shadow/ruin?
    Steel = Metal I guess?
    All just random ideas that my brain spat out, but maybe one or two of them are good.

    I honestly just think they are tsukumogami, objects that gained a soul after being thrown out after years of being used or just because they have reached 100 years of age either way the object is animated but depending on how/why it gained the soul will determine its personality. The type of the pokemon is more or less the mana each living being has also its a Japanese fantasy game, it has Japanese folklore as well as other nations' folklore.

    The way I see it, objectmons in-universe are the basis for those objects in their world (with some exceptions). ex. Vanilluxe isn't based on ice cream; ice cream's invention was inspired by Vanilluxe. The same logic can even be applied to Pokemon saying their own names; language and the meaning of words evolved based on the noises Pokemon make.

    Honestly, the fact that people don't make a huge deal about Magnemite and Voltorb, or for that matter even some later objectmons like Nosepass and the cosmic rocks, makes me think that most people complaining are really just using the "objectmons are bad" argument as yet another thinly veiled way to bash later gens.
    Personally, I'm mixed on objectmons. I like them when there's unique lore attached, like how Cryogonal is basically a frozen gestault colony of cyanobacteria functioning similarly to a Portuguese Man-O-War, or how Klefki is based on European fairies that steal your keys for shits and giggles. And for some reason I also like the Klink line. I'm not a fan of ones that exist because "we have to have an objectmon for this generation's 'dex", though.

    Object mons are mad underrated. They're some of my favorites along with plant-based mons too. Fans are under the wrong impression that Pokemon are all animals, especially when Gen 1 had a good amount. It allows for even more creativity so I believe these should be more of a thing in the series. You can still make cute and epic designs out of them so folks really shouldnt complain about them

    In general, I feel like Object Mons are fine if they have a decent enough in-universe explanation, or if they _don't_ then at the very least the in-universe characters express the same amount of confusion and/or curiosity as the player/viewer might have about the origins of such Mons in the first place, and IIRC we've seen a decent amount of both of these approaches in Pokemon.
    Slightly different from 'mon-collecting games, but the best example I can think of off the top of my head is from the manga series Dungeon Meshi, which actually had a pretty interesting take on the concept of your classic treasure chest mimic monster by making them essentially _gigantic land hermit crabs_ that use discarded pieces of armor, cookware, jugs, barrels, and ultimately large treasure chests as shells. In the same volume, the main characters also discover "treasure bugs", which were a species of beetle that had evolved to look like gold coins and jewels to they'd look unappealing to the species of monster that would normally eat them. (It was also an in-universe method for them to spread to new areas, as being mistaken for treasure and picked up by unaware adventurers means they get a free ride to the relative safety of the adventurer's hometown.)

    • @Gamebuilder2000
      @Gamebuilder2000 5 месяцев назад +1

      I'm not sure why they'd express confusion when these creatures have always been a part of this world and half of them can power a city block on their own
      Actually in a lot of cases lore wise the mons predate whatever thing they're based on
      Just like how in real life we base things in animals all the time

    • @submariNervous
      @submariNervous 5 месяцев назад

      @@Gamebuilder2000 Yeah, reading my original comment back I can see I probably could have worded it a bit clearer, so that's entirely on me.
      To (hopefully) clarify, I'm mostly going on the logic that BECAUSE these Pokemon have been around so long as you said, they don't bear much discussion for folks who are in-the-know about them, so people who AREN'T in the know (such as those who live in small towns with only your typical natural-looking Pokemon like Pidgey and Caterpie) would be caught off-guard by object 'Mons.
      It's very much in the same vein as a person in the real world seeing a pangolin or sarcastic fringehead for the first time. The first one might inspire mild surprise and maybe a soft "aaawww~", but the latter will almost always garner a "wtf is that thing and why does it LOOK like that and how do I ensure I never have to be near it in real life" response.
      (I hope this made my thoughts about that a bit clearer. Sorry if I failed! 😅)
