I love gimmick pokemon. It totally makes sense in-world that a handful of pokemon would just randomly evolve to have these super niche and strange roles that only they fill
Are humans gimmick pokemon 🧐
@@Qoobon_
Definitely. We are truly the gimmicks of the IRL animal kingdom.
@@EgZhiGen1949CD That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard, I'm in
@@crowqueenamps And our gimmick is that we are smart :)
@@EgZhiGen1949CDlegendary's dont evolve(till now) a second ability would be better
My favorite gimmick is still Zoroark's Illusion ability. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to trick "serious" players into misplays with an ability they’re not used to seeing or dealing with.
It's so unfortunate that it was introduced in the same generation as team preview, so it ended up being borderline useless competitively.
I wish it got a move that created the illusion of being another move
Imagine that the move copies the animation (but not effects) of the move of the same slot of the copied Pokémon, with "it's super efective" or "it's not very effective" appearing also based on the copied move
@@sushiroll3795 It's way better with Hisuian Zoroark, tbh. Three immunities mean you genuinely need to take the gamble way more often between what will check HZ and what will check the pokemon it actually looks like you're dealing with. Normal/Ghost is a fantastic typing in general, too.
Yeah, this is why it can sometimes be a good idea to just pick a pokemon you like and play it come hell or high water in OU on Showdown
Even really good players only have so much mental bandwidth, so they tend to specifically build and train to handle common threats and just kinda intuit what other pokemon are all about. There are tons of less popular mons whose main strength ends up being "Who the hell expects their team to need to counter Dragalge" and if you build a team to capitalize on that you can get some really fun games
Fun fact: Necrozma can be cheesed by a Zoroark. Its AI won't recognize that Photon Geyser keeps failing, and will just keep spamming it
Dropert: *Exists*
Meowscarada with Flower Trick: "I'm gonna end this man's whole career"
Imagine a power trip dropert lol
@@GimmeMyHandleBack it should have it, as a treat
As somebody once said, Chansey is not weak to Fighting type, it's weak to physical hitting moves.
I've always had a soft spot for gimmick Pokémon (when they're interesting, of course.)
j
frick spinda.
Glalie having 80 on all stats gotta be the lamest gimmick
when i first saw Pyukumuku i had to use it the i learned about its moveset, and guess what? i still used it on my run!
@@alphachiuSpindas my favorite pokémon wtf
Surprised you didn't mention Unown, as it has both a visual gimmick as a mon with 28 unique forms to collect (and often some kind of puzzle to solve in order to do so, such as the Ruins of Alph puzzles in Gen 2 or the scavenger hunt in Legends Arceus) and a moveset gimmick, only being able to learn Hidden Power.
ah ya the most gimmicky of all pokemon that was completely gimped for only being able to learn hidden power
Regieleki is also so fast it's speed can overflow specifically in trickroom, meaning it can outspeed in trickroom.
how tf does that even happen?
@@shadenkeltner8067 In Trick Room, Speed stats are subtracted from 10,000 to reverse them. After this, for technical reasons, they're taken modulo 8192 (which in this case, just means subtracting 8192 if the input is at or above it). This doesn't normally change the order since the Speed of basically any Pokémon causes all of them to be lowered by the same 8192.
But Regieleki has such a high base Speed stat that, with some modifiers, it's reasonably possible to get it above 1808, which is high enough that 10,000 minus it is less than 8192, so the Speed value remains in the 8000s while everything else is much closer to 0, letting it still outspeed.
@@TheRedSmarty Wow, this really be a tricky room. Lol anyway, that was a really good explanation! I wonder if they'll fix that or keep it as is, because that's funny
The ffff? A translucent fish head with their eyes inside? How have I never seen this before?
It was found like 15 years ago, and unless you are an Animal Crossing fan is very likely you never heard about it.
It would be even funnier if Dropert getting crit made it instantly explode and faint, hurting all surrounding Pokemon on the field
What’s really interesting is how these things are integrated into other parts of the franchise, such as the TCG, side games, or the anime. In the case of the TCG, it tends to make them appear less often (Arceus), or have them deviate from their game versions (Wobbuffet).
I love the custom Pokémon art that you make for these videos, are you making them accessible for the public anywhere? The moment I saw the Shedinja art I wanted to take a screenshot and make it my profile picture, but I'd rather know if you intend on making them available first
hard agree, I'm a huge fan of the art style. Chansey looks beautiful for example
Wasnt ready for that Hulk Hogan hot take on Pikachu 😂
I am so glad there’s a new video out!!!
I miss when Kecleon's Gimmick was unique to itself.
This will probably not happen but can you do an evolutionary line based of Dopamine and Epinephrine (aka adrenaline) . Maybe it can be a split evolution and if you have a friendship mechanic it can determine which evo you get by a certain level. Not sure how that would work or what the prevo would represent but i think it would be a fun concept to do.
For adrenaline you could have an ability that combines anger point and sturdy so that if sturdy activates it maximises your attack
@@thegoldenaegis I was thinking maybe an abilities that affects moves based on friendship (like if they're the dopamine mon moves like return would be boosted by like 1.5 or 2x and vice versa) but I kinda like that one better
@@lolidk839i assume you meant that the adrenaline pokemon would get equivalent boosts to moves like frustration but those by nature just aren't very good so these ideas really aren't contradictory
Dropert is such a cool concept, I love the idea of a crazy wall that has one obvious weakness, however I feel like it is busted. I know using crits as the weakness is to differentiate it from something like chansey's lack of defense, but crits are way too uncommon to have a weakness to (in pokemon at least, I don't know if crits would work differently in Stema). Every pokemon is "weak" to crits, if a move crits then that pokemon basically dies anyway, and crits already ignore all stat changes. You might get a crit once per match on average, so having to fish for one to break through dropert sucks. Chansey has amazing hp and a decent special defense stat, but it is balanced by being super weak to physical attacks and not having the attacking stats to deal any damage. Shuckle has ridiculous defense and special defense stats, but is balanced by having absolutely nothing in all of it's other stats, including hp. Looking at dropert's stats, it looks like it has high special defense, good speed, decent attack and special attack, and relatively low hp and defense, but with it's ability that defense stat is probably more than even Shuckle. And to anyone thinking it's defense won't be that bad because it has a low base stat, Azumarill has the ability huge power, which doubles it's attack stat, and it only has 50 base attack. Resilient is effectively huge power x2 but it buffs defense. Also, Shuckle only has 20 base hp and can still tank hits, so the low hp doesn't matter that much either. Dropert is an basically an automatic switch out to any physical attacker other than those with guaranteed crit moves, and is still relatively specially defensive against special attackers. It also has the ability to deal damage to both specially and physically defensive opponents because it is a mixed attacker. I absolutely love the concept, but I think it would need some base stat changes or an ability rework to make moves more likely to crit against it or something, otherwise it would be the best "theoretical pokemon" ever created.
THIS. i feel like the ability should at least raise the opponents crit rate or something so there is more 'risk and reward'
Shuckle.
Shuckle.
I love that you mentioned Regieleki outspeeding scarfed speedsters, but I think my favourite way to show just how fast Regieleki is is that if you were to max out its speed and then give it a choice scarf, it would outspeed Trick Room, the move that reverses how speed affects turn order for several turns. It would literally become so fast that the game cannot comprehend how fast it is and it would simply be unaffected by the condition.
It’s that it becomes so fast that its speed stat when after trick room calculations is low enough to not overflow past the 8192 limit and remain in the 8000s - 7000s
We all need a gimmick pokemon in our lives...
I absolutely LOVE this guy. I hope rupert can utilize its defensive stat(like body press maybe?) For more fun gameplay style. I really hope this guy isn't too late in the game. Probably you will put him somewhere in the middle, after players have learnt major mechanicks. Anyway, wanna be buddies with them
For your droplet pokemon; I would say just give the pokemon ridiculous defenses in their base stats BUT give it a balancing ability where critical hits are 2x more common into it (or 5x, whichever works better for balance). If there was any ability swapping pokemon in the future, that could be fun to play with
This is a good idea, but the ability should rather increase the crit damage received (like a 5-10x multiplier instead of 2x). If it has a defense of like 500, a normal critical hit still would do very little damage and you would need multiple crits. And the idea of the prince ruperts drop Pokémon is that it will shatter in one massive hit, and not in a few decently strong ones.
@@nosysprat6170I'm thinking like 50 75 250 75 50 75 base stats and its ability is like if the opponent had Sniper (crits do 2.25x damage)
I say, a critical hit shatters that droplet giving it a new form with different stats
Or make any attack only do 1 damage unless it is hit by a critical hit, in which case it instantly is defeated, but crits have half the chance from happening.
@@diablo.the.cheater that's basically luck-based Shedinja, i like it 😂
In gen 2 being shiny actually was dependent on the stats of the Pokemon based on their dvs
And it was a crippling condition
@@marcoasturias8520 yep because if memory serves the max certain dvs could be was 11 or 12

I can't wait to play this game you're making!
Another great video

Pic is unironically me with Kingambit and Gholdengo when Gen 9 came out. I always loved Bisharp and Kingambit is just Better Bisharp, and the concept of a pokemon made of money is just too cool to pass up. If they weren't OU I would've used them anyways.
I know this for a fact because Wo-Chien is both my absolute favorite pokemon of all time and also Singles RU / Doubles UU, and I built an entire Doubles OU team around just setting up for Wo-Chien to do its thing because I enjoy the way it plays.
People are allowed to enjoy strong pokemon just like they're allowed to try and make Spinda work if that's the hill they want to die on.
i think a gimmick pokemon is a pokemon that has something unique to them.
like zorua and zorark's transformation with illusions,
dittos whole existance, eevee's 8 evolutions all 1 single type.
all of these pokemon have something unique to them.
Why does Shedinja have defense stats. Surely they could have put those extra points for special attack
Or speed.
It’s called ‘hope’
Maybe as a leftover of when it used to be a Nincada.
Has anyone ever talked about the cute lineless style of the Pokemon he draws?
My brain is more fried than the computer i put with my loosely sealed water bottle in my backpack
what i would consider gimmick pokemon as is "pokemon who are unique enough to have their own special uses" like chattot or sheddinja who both have their own unique uses chattot having chatter and shedinja having its special ability
The fact you made a Pokémon based on Prince Rupert’s drop, is pretty hilarious! XD
I love this video! Also, your art style is AMAZING! I'd buy a Shedinja sticker in a heartbeat
The more of these videos I watch, the more I want to play your Stema project. I’d play it on release day for sure.
OooHHH I absolutely squealed at little Dropert, I love their design and I absolutely LOVE Prince Rupert's Drops-didn't know about Pele's Tears. I love Dropert's lil crown so much! It's absolutely precious and even if it completely shatters in battle I would have that cutie in my team. Gimmick Pokemon are so interesting, I love the ideas behind them!
6:23 "Can someone put Chansey's stats on screen?"
Legit made me laugh
The fact that you made all Vivillon forms with your artsyle is remarkable
Shiny pokemon are just signs of dedication, a statement rather than a reward
YES
I love gimmick mons!!
sure, they're inconsistent but when you pull off their thing, it feels incredible!!
you'll never catch me without a Shuckle on my comp team
I love being unkillable!!!
Yes very nice video (I'm still watching the ad before the video but i'm sure it'll be great)
Regieleki is actually so fast that it moves first in Trick Room. Let me say that again. Regieleki is so fast that Trick Room, which lets slower Pokémon go first, doesn't check against it. This is achievable by going over the maximum values the move checks, but I don't know enough about that to go into details

I like the concept of a Prince Rupert's Drops 'mon, and the "defense plummeting if it gets critted" is a neat idea, but, at least in current Pokemon, it may be too easy to increase the chance of (or even force) crits for that to be particularly useful.
Welp, having a counter is not the end of the world
Just stumbled on this by chance and I'm glad I did. Your art style and presentation are top notch, and I am already extremely interested in Stema, very excited to learn more!
oh my god dropert is such a lil GUY they are definitely on my team when the full game comes out
Give droopert a cool protect like move that works like spiky shield but with a higher shield damage and reduces the attacker's defense, add a drawback where it fails when resilient's negative effect happens
Resilient doesn't have a negative effect, it's just that crits ignore buffs
I love your art!
Drinking water is my favorite gimmick
Another W N0rtist video as usual I'm guessing?
I can’t wait to see you programming the actual game.
That thumbnail is genius
This was a super interesting video. I love the overview you did during the first half of the video defining the breadth of what a gimmick can be. The gimmicks that I enjoy the most are ones that not only effect the playstyle of a single Pokemon, but effect how the entire team is built around it and flesh out the individual Pokemon outside of the standard sweeper, tank and support roles. Trick Room and Perish Song are decent examples of this, but both are incredibly limited in their direct support leading to surprisingly identical teams despite the gimmick's potential. Weather teams have the exact opposite problem where they have a ton of support, but only moderate impact on the teambuilding process, since a Swift Swim Sweeper or a Rain Dish Tank don't play much different from your standard sweepers and tanks.
My favorite examples of gimmick teams are Baton Pass and paraflinch. Both have a major effect on how the team is built and that effect causes many Pokemon to drastically change their role beyond what a typical competitive team would look like. Sure, you still have sweepers, tanks and supports, but in these teams, most of them have drastically different goals to what they would have normally. A sweeper on a paraflinch team is less concerned about how much raw damage it can output and more about just how much of the roster they can outspeed, so speed becomes slightly more important than offense. The rest of the team is focused around that speed control through Sticky Web/Paralysis. Baton pass is even more specialized with members focused around mitigating counterplay like magic bounce and Suction cups.
There are even some signature abilities that would be incredible as team basis if only they were given to a few more Pokemon. Galarian Slowbro's Quick Draw ability drastically changes how it's built as a sweeper and greatly improves the viability of Quick Claw. Abilities like Emergency Exit and Innards Out could drastically change how a team functions if they were given to a Pokemon with the right stats or moveset and that's not even touching on the variety of Toxic Spread support that we got in gen 9 that would be really interesting if one of the most popular Pokemon wasn't immune to all of it
I love Dropert already. Such a neat design! I'd nickname my own Dropert "Burger King".
Blood Moon Ursaluna is one of my favorite gimmick Pokemon, also Droppert is kinda cute, I like it
This was an awesome video. Love Dropert, he's a swell lad! can't wait to play your game
DUDE I LOVE HOW THE BACKGROUND MUSIC CHANGES BASED ON THE FOOTAGE PLAYING THAT'S SO COOL.
The fact that I read the thumbnail as "shimmick".
One thing I love about draft is that it makes "gimmicks" way more viable. A lot of times the reason gimmick mons don't work in ladder is because they get countered by knowing what to expect, or just by specific common enough mons. In draft, you can map out how good a particular gimmick is into the enemy team, and it's usually stronger due to the lower average power level of each team. Even though your opponent can plan for it, you're forcing them to bring specific things to deal with it, and sometimes you know they don't have a great option for it.
My personal favorite is Ambipom. Ambipom's Fake Out is basically just a +3 regular attack that also flinches. Technician + STAB + a decent attack stat means against a lot of very fast, frail threats, you're dealing 70% in one fake out. It opens up specific win cons or situational bail outs against fully setup mons (like Dragon Dancers or other mons who boost speed in some way) just by sacking other mons and continually bringing it in. Once you're confident on which other mons you need to win a game at that point, you can sacrifice one or two in order to force your opponent to sack their setup mon, or just swap out and lose the entire setup. Granted, there are reasons Ambipom isn't even OU. But it's definitely a mon that can do a ton of work against people who aren't prepared to deal with what it does and don't respect its speed and power.
Gimmicks are fine. Variety is the spice of life. Eevee is one of my favorite Pokemon. That is probably the most famous gimmick Pokemon. I think that Pokemon that have weird evolution count as a gimmick. Eevee is a good example. Shedninja was in the video, and it has weird evolution too. Maybe others count, like Burmy and Inkay.
I literally made a prince Rupert's drop pokemon...
But it has the special defense of a shuckle and defence of a chansey.... And it's a tadpole... And it's fire/water
Oh I learned about those glass tears this year :D It's so fun to see concept I've learned about in schools in your videos ^^
this guy is so amazing and puts so much effort int his work! :D
Dropert has a really clever design! I like it a lot
I loved Yps Magazine when I was a child.
Can you make stema creature based on legendary creature/character and sience? Im just asking because in i think every monster taming game theres at least few creatures based on myths and legends and i like mythical creatures
Perhaps based on scientific misconceptions or alchemy
I loved this video! It was soooo interesting, also, just look at Dropert! He's a lil glassy guy
fun fact, if you melt the tail so it's no longer a thing, you have an immortal prince rupert's drop
8:56 by instant I think you mean slow and painful.
Edit: I’m speaking from experience, I once won using a shedinja against my friend.
spinda being the first ak blue gem pattern.
I would honestly argue the Ghastly line was a gimmick pokemon in Gen I, being immune to normal moves, and many pokemon were stuck with normal moves if they wanted a physical option to target its weaker defense (albeit, this mostly applies to a playthrough of the game than competitive, since gen I was primarily designed with single-player in mind). the Dratini line could arguably be considered a gimmick too, for being strong against the starter types, its final form being stronger than most pokemon you'd have on your team, but having a crippling weakness to Ice, though this again feels more like Boss design, since that line feels primarily more like it exists to make Lance tough. Yes, this is entirely down to their typings, but they were the only evolutionary lines for their types for a reason, and from gen I design sensibilities it feels more like the types were made in service to those pokemon's specific gimmicks, in a way they would eventually make for gimmicky abilities.
Gimmick Pokémon are literally my favorite kinds of Pokémon. Shuckle is my all-time favorite Pokémon and I love ones like Phione and Chatot and even have lil plushes of em.
There is a Pokemon in my region called laveech (hasn't been revealed yet) which whenether a Pokemon used a psychical move can be either laveech or the opponent there is a chance that laveech will drain the Pokemons heath every turn untill it or it's opponent faints
Bug/fire?
@@HelheimMudkip just fire
"signature moves alone dont make a gimmick pokemon" except for smeargle of course 🙃
Put a Shuckle in a thumbnail and I'm already sold on the vid
Dude, I love the idea of that bulb creature for your game
A cool gimmick you can do is that instead of capturing your Fakemon, what if instead you gather ingredients to make your own? Like you combine elements for the periodic table as well as monster drops like pieces of fur or scale or feathers or other stuff like that and you're basically mix the ingredients together like you doing chemistry and you end up creating one of the many Fakemon in your region ... maybe to prevent players from getting super strong and game Fakemon too early maybe you could wall them behind your players level until they are strong enough to make them or maybe have them require ingredients that can only be found closer to the end game
I really enjoyed that hulk hogan clip

Its such a shame that shedinja didnt get into gen9 because of the tera types

I often think of gimmicks as something thats only effective against newbies, or something that sounds cool on paper, but it can be countered easily if you know what youre doing.
Like ditto

Yes
I think in general, people’s definition of gimmick pokemon is so broad that almost every pokémon is a gimmick pokemon in one way or another. Bulbapedia agrees, which is why they don’t have a page of gimmick pokemon anymore.
My definition of gimmick pokémon is much more narrow: it’s a pokémon that primarily exists to show off a new hardware or software feature.
Some examples:
- the entire Eevee line exists to showcase new evolution methods and new types, among other things (like time system and Pokémon-Amie)
- Chatot showcases the microphone
- Plusle and Minun promote double battles
- Malamar highlights the new gyroscope
- Castform is like a mascot for the new weather mechanic
Here in the Philippines Gimmick is also a term used for a night out with friends
My favorite gimmick Pokemon is Oricorio. Imagine your opponent using the Orange Justice or Macarena to beat the shit out of you.
Gimmick makes things fun
I could imagine if Dropert was a real Pokemon, it could be paired up with a Gardevoir that knows Lucky Chant, a move that prevents the opposing party from landing any critical hits for the next 5 turns and that could be REALLY broken in competitive play, especially if Dropert could also use Body Press.
Another thing about gimmicky Pokémon is how weird they are even for their standards.
For example to this day Manaphy is the only mythical Pokémon that can reproduce, and to makes things even odd the only lay Phione eggs.
No other Pokémon does that.
Funniest part about Chatot, if you wanted to optimize Chatter one viable way was to teach it an AVGN F Bomb.
Love to see these videos, commenting for interaction
This is such a good video!
Since the upgrade feathers exist now (at least in scarlet/violet), I think it would be funny to gather a lot of feathers and give them to Chansy :]
???
@@marcoasturias8520 In scarlet/violet, you can see small shining specks and Poke balls scattered throughout the areas. Normal/red glowing Poke balls give you various items, such as EXP candy or boosts. Yellow/Yellow-turquoise glowing balls give you TMs. The shining specks give you TM materials and sometimes feathers. Feathers can be either held or given to pokemon to boost certain stats.
I think Non-Newtonian fluid would be another STEM related gimmick design concept. Maybe a mon that has extremely high speed and attack (liquid form) but as soon as it is hit it gets something like shuckles stats (solid form).
So like a reverse Minior, sounds fun.
13:55 is like metal enemies in battle cats :0
The fact that Ogerpon gets a follow me is super broken
Still love to sweep with Shuckle power trick and baton pass though. Just have every member of your team baton pass to each other and use stat increase moves, then baton pass to Shuckle, use power trick to turn his massive defense (the highest in the game) into the now highest attack stat in the game PLUS stat boosts, and show the world why you shouldn’t fuckle with shuckle
