You can sense when he gets back to the main section, he's no longer really counting but instead is just feeling and filling in around the groove instinctively. These kinds of videos bring up an interesting, and I think, under-explored idea of songwriting styles from a drummer's perspective. Because, we know Dennis is never really "off-beat" but, I think his internalized feeling of basic song structure produces an interesting interpretation. Both his style and Tool's rely on "unexpected" accents, so the mix of the two is something you can't really write, which is the value and novelty of this video concept.

Dennis is definitely in a class of his own. And I already knew he would kill it, but it's still amazing how much he flowed seamlessly through all those different time signatures.
God let me just fangirl over Tool for a second here and just show you guys how crazy Dennis is for trying to navigate Danny Carey's time signature maze -
Schism's first half is very obvious - alternating 5/8+7/8 (or 6/4, anyway you want to count it) in the verse section and the 13/8 in the chorus. But after the 3rd verse, things get quite intense like some unexpected time signature jumpscares - the 3 bars of 6/4 + 1 bar of 11/8 in "The Poetry that comes..." section. Or the 4 bars of 7/4 + 1 bar of 5/4 at the end of the 3rd chorus. Then comes a silent 9/8 section. Also it's quite amazing how Dennis interpreted and played the 27/8 (6/8 + 6/8 + 6/8 +9/8) section - the "Cold silence has..." section. Then after a 1 silent bar of 8/4, Danny comes in with 1 bar of 10/4 then two bars of 8/4 followed by a powerful 1 bar of 5/4. Then we have a section - the "Between supposed lovers" section - in 14/4 (9/4 +5/4). And nearing the end, we have beautiful 1 bar 6/4 tom + crash fill which then leads to 4 bars of 7/4 and 1 bar of 3/4. And comes some powerful 6/4 Triplet tom patterns, the "I know the peices fit" section. And finally, Danny finishes the song off with some intense 4/4 Triplets and Sextuplets double bass
Sure it's not Dream Theater level of time changes or Animals as Leaders level of Meteic modulation but what Tool does best is to make all of *THAT* multiple odd time changes sound musical

I've seen Dennis live a couple of times. The man is a legend, saw him with Mike Stern on his tour, it should have been the Dennis tour he did no less than 8 solos. Lookup him with Tetsuo Sakurai and Greg Howe there are some great live clips of them.

I remember seeing Dennis Chambers with John McLaughlin years ago. His drumming was so insane, everybody in the band just had to laugh when he got to really take off on his drumsolos. It was a truly mindblowing experience. Been one of my favorite drummers ever since. It's so cool to see his take on such a song. Different for sure, but he still nails parts in the sense that it sounds interesting. Imagine giving him a couple of more attempts, bet he would play around with it a lot more.

Honestly, regarding this task (I watched it before) I didn't like the song they gave him, I love Tool, but this is one of those songs where a sick bass part is highlighted throughout the whole song, and the drummer has no option to do much except that it fills in the background, there is not much room for any improvisation. Of course, I love these kinds of songs, but I wouldn't offer it to someone to create something for it and express their inspiration or creativity

Yep, I liked it. It was impressive. Very fun and cool. What I like hearing is A drummer not hearing their part. Then doing there interpretation based on the music genre and what they feel is right for the song. We need more of these! It’s interesting to see how someone else would have played it.

As a fellow drummer, I love the fact that he wasn't able to hear the drum tracks. It was impressive how he got how the drums should sound like, in his own interpretation, and I think he nailed it.
Tool is not an easy band to cover, regardless of what instrument, but the drums especially can be challenging to say the least.
Danny is one of the greats, and my personal favorite next to Dale Crover from the Melvins.
And side note: you don't talk too much, I enjoy your comments and you have a great attitude as well. Keep up the good work!🤘🏻

@66Samus you may already know this but Dennis Chambers is an OG Funkadelic (P-Funk) drummer & is use to crazy time signatures. Check out, Tyrone Lampkin and Tiki Fulwood, both Funkadelic drummers. PS: I was Tool twice, once at Lollapalooza 94 and in 2001. My friend entered the pit during their Lolla gig fully clothed and came out wearing only boxers. Brutal.
