Buddy Rich was SICK!!!! I was wondering if he was going to be on the list. He was way before his time. There wasn't many bands out there that could keep up with him during his time. But now. His phone would ring off the hook "Come play with us!" He had no limitation to what he could do. He can play anything any drummer could come up with. Believe it.
Buddy Rich is a solid #1 pick. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a concert in the early 80-s. He was as good as he ever was even when he was older. I would put Neil Peart at #2. He's the best rock drummer ever, a true technician of the art.

I've always liked Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, John Bonham, Ainsley Dunbarr, Ian Paice and much later was impressed by Ken Mary ( ruclips.net/video/qWf4J9kkVmI/видео.html )
Had the pleasure of seeing Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson in concert at Berkley in Boston in the early 80's. They did a drum battle at the end and it was SPECTACULAR!
A few of those drum sets were insane! Too many cymbals & to many drums. Buddy riches drum set was All A drummer needs. Buddy was great. And I don't know much about bands or drummers.
Having seen Buddy perform live and listening to his playing in all the video clips, he was the GOAT. The rest could approach his talent, but none could quite reach his level. His playing was on a simple trap set with no special electronics to enhance his playing. He never caught a rim unless it was a part of his solo like this video shows. And NO One could get close to his hand speed and accuracy.
Ian Paice was pretty close to Buddy Rich in terms of speed, but Rich was a truly phenomenon. When was the last time a drummer regularly appeared on late night talk shows and always soloed?! It just never happens, anymore. These days, Donati, Lang and Royster, Jr. are all extremely fast. So is Eloy Casagrande. There are others. Lang has amazing independence, but can't compose a comprehensive solo the way Buddy did. Donati can, and he is truly amazing. He might be Buddy's equal, but they have different strengths (and Donati was a damn beast in his day). These lists are almost always a joke. I mean, Tommy Lee? Eric Carr?! You'll also usually find some completely 2nd-rate drummer like Grohl on here. Didn't even bother watching most of it, as the poster clearly doesn't know the drums.
All these drummers were good with Neil Pert was great, but none could match Buddy’s hand speed and accuracy. You never hear him hit a rim unless he meant to. He didn’t have all the fancy equipment, like Neil, but did it all with standard drums. And he used to use those skinny cymbal stands that telescoped up. Buddy also claimed he never practiced, though I know he had to rehearse with the bands. Buddy never had formal training, but did start in Vaudeville at 4 years old. He played in huge venues like Carnegie Hall but also played much smaller venues like jazz clubs. I got to see him at my High School in 1975 during his West Side story tour. My High School!
all great drummers everywhere...but Buddy Rich was an Icon ..I took lessons from a Buddy Rich drum book ..my drum teacher was a fan of Buddy Rich so I learned everything Buddy Rich ...it was an still is incredible...I live to play the drums...
buddy rich is ok but he's seriously overrated in comparison to his contemporaries like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. tbh it's mostly due to the fact that he's more popular cause he's white
Wow! Buddy Rich plays stuff with one hand faster than I could with 10 hands! I bet if you slowed it down like 10x it would be spot on rhythm, too. Crazy!
John Bonham, Neil Peart, buddy rich are the best drummer’s that have ever lived because of their diversity and the different things they could play... nobody was better at creating different riffs on the drums than John bonham!
You might be forgetting one who should be in the top 5 Barriemore Barlow from Jethro Tull, John Bonham say´d he was the best drummer England had produced
I fully agree with you regarding John Bonham but Buddy Rich ? Learn a bit about drumming and you'll see Buddy was a show off, and useless. What he had was a superb orchestra/band that made Buddy better than he really was. MAN, BUDDY WAS BORING !!!!

On a more serious note, there's Buddy Rich, then there's everybody else. Buddy was the best snare and hi-hat man in the business, hands down. (I always liked his left-handed upstrokes on the underside of the hi-hat. Very creative and original). Also, whether it be Slingerlands or Ludwigs, he only ever played with a single kick drum set. 😄👍🇺🇸
i think danny carrey shouldve def made the list somewhere imo. he and neil peart both had such technical drum parts, cool time signatures, and original styles. danny was voted the most rudimental drummer like. more than one year i believe.

Ok your right Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer in the world and nobody can disagree! Do you feel better now? Neil Peart is the greatest drummer and Buddy Rich is not even close, honestly!
Its about playing MUSICALLY.... sound effects are def a PART of that, but thats what its about. Theres 2 types of player. "Drummers" who can play "drums"..... & MUSICIANS who PLAY DRUMS. There is a subtle, yet HUGE difference there.
Yep, how did he do it with a set that didn't hide him & without 3 ft of hair flying around ? Oh ! It was his TALENT, something lacking in today's world. In his day, it took talent, not theatrics.

You don't have to be an acrobatic drummer to play good music. I've seen small drum sets, a bass, a snare, three toms, a high hat, a crash n ride cymbal that behind a good drummer sound phenomenal. It's not the gun, or how many guns you have, it's the gunner!! 😳
Joey Jordison is a good pick his drumming on songs like diluted, no life, tattered and torn, eyeless, and wait and bleed are some of my favorite off the self titled album.

They're missing Ginger Baker, who, as a Jazz rhythm/blues drummer pioneered the double base drum and his unique style . ...Bonham emulated this style, and Peart was really a different drummer altogether.
Loved Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa but let's not forget about people like Joe Morrello who was drummer for Dave Brubeck playing the really odd time signatures too!
Buddy Rich já falecido, é sem dúvida alguma o melhor entre os melhores, sua mão esquerda é fantástica. E não usava pedais duplos e sua bateria era de uma simplicidade absurda. Ele sempre fez o melhor com menos. Um monstro.
Agreed. My brother in law was a new york student of Buddy's. He died in 2001 but taught me alot. But no Danny Carey or Blake Richardson makes this list suspect. But considering the lack of actual pieces of equipment Buddy and Jon Bohnam should have topped this particular list
Definitely with his feet he reminds me of Dave Lombardo of Slayer. I saw him with Black Oak Arkansas in the early seventies and I still remember him doing a drum solo with his feet😮😊
First of all I've seen the Crue several times back in the day and Tommy's thundering drumming with Mick's monster licks carried them to the moon. He's a better drummer. You obviously don't know what you're talking about!!! 👍🥁
This is all about speed. There are much better drummers who should be in this list. Best thrash metal drummers for me were Dave Lombardo and Pete Sandoval, both monsters of speed and power and thousands of beats per minute. But yeah, although snare-focused, Buddy Rich had a sheer velocity which was off the scale. That last clip renders everything before it pretty much irrelevant.
I agree that Buddy was a master. I disagee that all rock drummers would be put to shame. Some mark(ed) the instrument (drums) in their own way. I won't mention names : each one's got his own list.

Right. This is everyone's opinion thats it. Theirs no absolute on who is the world's best drummers. We could never be certain. But if your going technique and skill, a list without Mike Mangini would be wrong. My opinion
Because the random guy who made this list based on his opinion put him there. Pretty simple. RUclips has room for more if you care to contribute a list of your own. Just a word of warning, yours will get shit on too because people are ridiculous sensitive creatures who hate differences of opinion. (As you just illustrated).
Oh, not true. Once upon a time Collins was one of the best rock drummers alive. He’s certainly one of the greatest rock drummers who ever lived. Of course, any so-called ‘Greatest Drummers’ list with Tommy Lee, Peter Criss and guys like Dave Grohl and some of these others is a joke. Obviously, put together by someone who doesn’t really know drumming. Not that Bonham could have done everything Donati or Minnemann or Lang or Mangini…or a hundred others can do, but he and Buddy Rich are still kings. And, all respect to Neil Peart.
This list is 17 years old and needs SERIOUS updating. My list from 10 to 1 is as follows: 10. Charlie Watts 09. Ringo Starr 08. Gene Krupa 07. Keith Moon 06. Ginger Baker 05. Phil Collins 04. Danny Carey 03. John Bonham 02. Neil Peart 01. The GOAT-Buddy Rich
Glad to see Phil Collins on this list because when he was just the drummer in Genesis while Peter Gabriel was the lead singer, he had some bad ass drum solos.... Besides, everyone plays the "air drums" to 'In The Air Tonight'... just like Mike Tyson did in The Hangover. Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and Jeff Porcoro should all be on this list somewhere.
Our son is a self taught drummer. Other than he grew up surrounded by music as his parents are huge music fans, not sure where his determination comes from? His maternal great grandfather could play piano by ear. A drummer has the hardest job in a band and he is a punk drummer, so not exactly a stroll. He decided at 18 to form a band, now 42 still going, in only his second band, still plays with the other guy who started their first band together. Very proud.
I have long said that a band without at least a very good drummer and a very good bassist is not a good band. You don't need excellent guitarists nor excellent pianists to have a good band. But the hardest job? Singing. To be an excellent singer who captures the mood, sings on pitch even with poor monitors, and infuses humanity into a song - that is something that cannot be taught nor accomplished by mere practice. You can't practice to be Sinatra, Dean Martin, Grace Slick nor Joni Mitchell. Besides that, the band and the song live and die on the singer. That is a heck of a burden.
You got #1 correct. No one else in the same zip code from modern drummers. Buddy possibly just as good. Go watch NP’s solo from Hamburg. I still have seen nothing like it. Just awesome!!!

I bet that was spectacular!! I would've loved to have seen that myself!

Rode in an elevator with Buddy at a hotel. A real jerk, but the best drummer ever!
Buddy Rich. Nothin' fancy, no special pedals, or other equipment. Bare bones, plain, simple, raw, THE BEST!
Buddy Rich was the GOAT... never seen anyone play the snare like he could.
Watch the real goat, Vinnie Colaiuta, you'll see.
He showed Neil Peart the way! Awesome!😀
Buddy Rich beat has good harmony than other drummers
Buddy Rich getting all he can out of a standard drum set was epic.
Gene Krupa. Not Buddy Rich but could leave a few of those names in the dust.
Oh Yes Now he was the Greatest Love Rich
And jazz style!
A few of those drum sets were insane! Too many cymbals & to many drums. Buddy riches drum set was All A drummer needs. Buddy was great. And I don't know much about bands or drummers.
The only one who come near Buddy Rich is Charlie Adams, and I will bet you never heard of him.
All I can say is GOD DAMN just watching Buddy Rich was just amazingly mesmerizing!!! That was awesome man you got number 1 right for sure!!!
Neil peart is the only drummer who comes close to buddy❤
It’s funny seeing Buddy Rich at the end with one rack tom and a turtle neck incinerating everyone else on the list
Yes it is and yes he does!
I'm with you brother!
Best there ever was - ever.
OK, I;m sold, Buddy IS pretty damn good
Watch LZ Moby Dick live version. Bonham kicks all their butts!
You got Buddy Rich where he belongs. The rest of the list?
How stoned were you when you put it together?
lol
my thoughts also!!!
all great drummers everywhere...but Buddy Rich was an Icon ..I took lessons from a Buddy Rich drum book ..my drum teacher was a fan of Buddy Rich so I learned everything Buddy Rich ...it was an still is incredible...I live to play the drums...
buddy rich is ok but he's seriously overrated in comparison to his contemporaries like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. tbh it's mostly due to the fact that he's more popular cause he's white
Buddy and Neil Peart used to jam together!!! Two G.O.A.T.$!
Cant deny it...that buddy rich solo was out of this world.😮
Agreed
I fully agree with you regarding John Bonham but Buddy Rich ? Learn a bit about drumming and you'll see Buddy was a show off, and useless. What he had was a superb orchestra/band that made Buddy better than he really was. MAN, BUDDY WAS BORING !!!!
Lucky you got to see Rush live, it’s my dream
Jeff Porcaro...
I miss Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl, Harvey Mason, Vinnie Colaiuta, to mention a few drummers
Nobody can argue with any of those picks.
1000%Niels this list has horse blinders
Agree with Simon Phillips, outstanding technical and nuanced drummer.
Don Brewer played for Grand Funk Railroad. His solo on TNUC from the "On Time" album is one of the best ever!
After playing for ten years I still can't play a lot of Led Zeppelin beats right. Oh, I thought I had them but after some real close listening I was off. That man was on a different level.
Better not listen to a 11 yr old Yoyoka Soma, you'll throw your drums off a cliff.

Ever heard of Keith Moon, Ginger Baker or Carmine Appice?
Stuart Comeaux ginger baker.
My all time favorite drummer. RIP.

Led Zeppelin forever...
R.I.P John Bonham best power drummer ever...
I love that they just fade out and Buddy Rich is still killing it.
Me too.
As much as I love John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Mike Portnoy, I am happy that Buddy Rich is right where he belongs, in the number one spot!
Buddy Rich moves his hands like a humming bird moves its wings.
Absolutely. Buddy Rich is to drumming what Jimmy Hendrix is to guitar playing. A game changer.

Anybody forget about Mike Mangini

Cant believe Carl Palmer was not mentioned, he has same style or technique as Buddy Rich. Carl uses the art and science of stick mobility beyond wrist motion. I have seen him have the drum stick move on its own rhythm, quite amazing.
Carl Palmer is the best! (from Bulgaria)

From Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Asia.

Keith Moon played some horrible drum solo's, they were all over the place! Ian Paice of course, but Keith Moon please he played his drum solos like a train wreck...
I'm so happy that Buddy Rich made the top threee
Exactly, that's what i was thinking..
Missed one. Louie Bellson was a phenomenal drummer and pioneer of double bass drums. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1983 at Whitewater, Wisconsin D & B International and he gave me his sticks.
1? He missed about 20. His 5-10 are generic.
@@ericsims6617 Steve Gadd! Bill Bruford to say the least.
That's my thoughts on both Rich and Bonham the rest is all double kick drummers doing their best to compare to Rich and Bonham.
@@LEDFOOT49 uhh, that's an ignorant thing to say

Buddy Rich made everyone else look like they were sleeping.A true gifted drummer
i think danny carrey shouldve def made the list somewhere imo. he and neil peart both had such technical drum parts, cool time signatures, and original styles. danny was voted the most rudimental drummer like. more than one year i believe.

@@susanmccarthy4979 Peart was a great drummer no question about it but Buddy was a phenom
Ok your right Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer in the world and nobody can disagree! Do you feel better now?
Neil Peart is the greatest drummer and Buddy Rich is not even close, honestly!
Playing the drums is not how fast one can play. It is the sounds and effects you can produce. Listen to Mike Mangini, he’s a great example.
Very true, my drum teacher told me, Playing fast is cool
But keeping time is cooler
Or Portnoy for that matter
Its about playing MUSICALLY....
sound effects are def a PART of that, but thats what its about. Theres 2 types of player. "Drummers" who can play "drums"..... & MUSICIANS who PLAY DRUMS. There is a subtle, yet HUGE difference there.
I am, & wud much rather be, the musician who plays drums lol
Holy shit Buddy Rich was wild....Imagine with the equipment that he had at that time.....Amazing!
Imagine a young Buddy Rich on a modern kit.
there's actually footage of him playing double kick for the first time and he played with phenomenal speed, accuracy and control.

When I saw Eric Carr, it brought back the memories of seeing KISS in concert at the Joe Louis Arena during The Creatures of The Night Tour. He was a great drummer! I thought Peter Criss was on this list as well, but I guess quite a few people felt that Eric was the better of the KISS drummers. But Buddy Rich played....BEAT THE HELL of those drums!!! I really enjoyed that sound!!!
I think they both sucked!!!!! Come on dude?!.....Kiss?.....Really!?....What's happening to our world?
@@billdrummer1197 HAPPY NEW YEARS, Bill!
The only way I can answer your question is like this.
People like who and what they like! What the rest of the people on this planet does, doesn't matter all that much to the personal experiences that each of us goes through on our respective journey of life! What I liked during my 20s, back in the 1980s, is far different than some of what I like at 61 years of age now! I'm sure that you have evolved a little bit as well. It would be a waste of time and energy to get uptight about your comment simply because we don't see things the same way! If the world is coming to an end, believe me when I say this, for every living thing, the end will come soon enough! It happened to me in August of 2010 during Brain Surgery and again in 2011 February from Congestive Heart Failure the Friday before the Super Bowl! I was in ICU for almost 3 months! By The Grace of God, I am still alive! So, we just disagree, Dude! ✌️
Kiss sucks.. Peter Criss had to be replaced in the studio by Anton Figg because he couldn't keep time. Puhleeze.
Buddy Rich was a jazz drummer from the 50s and 60s, yet he could pound the ass off most famous rock drummers. The speed and timing is impeccable.
John Bonham. Copyed buddy he always said it. What he did was apply buddy to rock.thus Buddy and John sit at the top.
Buddy Rich was one of Neil Peart's heroes. To quote an interview with him, "He said Buddy Rich was, ‘the greatest drummer ever to have drawn breath.’ ... It's not ‘fan talk,’ because I never really was a Buddy Rich ‘fan.’" It's the second part of the quote that is interesting. :D

Just a word of warning, yours will get shit on too because people are ridiculous sensitive creatures who hate differences of opinion. (As you just illustrated).
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!! "AIN'T IT "???!
Oh my god Buddy Rich had some incredible hand speed didn’t he?
buddy rich and his mini drum kit blows all the others away . awesome drummer

All Buddy needed was a pair of sticks....watched him on the Muppet Show drum his way from the green room to the stage! It was awesome!
I Agree
@@josephperreault7047. Why not? Buddy is the guy they all try to be like. You could drop the guy into damn near any band and he wouldn't miss a beat.
2 thru 9.....open for debate. #1 absolutely no debate. Buddy Rich makes everyone else (maybe no Neil Peart) look like try outs....
Phil, Niel, John,Mike, But most importantly Buddy! 🥁 🎼🎼
John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Buddy Rich are the only drummers on your list that fall into “World’s Best Drummers” category.
Danny Carey
Zackly. And Phil Collins can play anything that makes noise.
Max Roach:: Who's Tommy Lee?
God: Yeah, I know. Someone misread the memo, and now Tony Lee is playing weddings in Muncie.
Exactly. Dream theaters drummer sucks hugh. Just random garbage
Buddy,Neil and John they are together know!!!!! Playing that big kit in Heaven!!!!
My god... safe the best for last !! Buddy rich is really the number one !!!!
Yes he deserves..
This list is 17 years old and needs SERIOUS updating. My list from 10 to 1 is as follows:
10. Charlie Watts
09. Ringo Starr
08. Gene Krupa
07. Keith Moon
06. Ginger Baker
05. Phil Collins
04. Danny Carey
03. John Bonham
02. Neil Peart
01. The GOAT-Buddy Rich
I think Mitch Mitchell should be on this list💯%
Ringo star are you kidding me
Glad to see Phil Collins on this list because when he was just the drummer in Genesis while Peter Gabriel was the lead singer, he had some bad ass drum solos....
Besides, everyone plays the "air drums" to 'In The Air Tonight'... just like Mike Tyson did in The Hangover.
Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and Jeff Porcoro should all be on this list somewhere.
Phil Collins was phenomenal on the first few Genesis albums. Vastly underrated drummer before he took over lead vocals.
Phill collins é um gênio 🥁🥁🥁🥁🎵
Buddy Rich was crazy good. No one even comes close to that man's talent 💪 R.I. P. Champ.
My List
1 Neil Peart
2 John Bohnam
3 Keith Moon
4 Ginger Baker
5 Ian Pace
You got #1 correct. No one else in the same zip code from modern drummers. Buddy possibly just as good. Go watch NP’s solo from Hamburg. I still have seen nothing like it. Just awesome!!!
Buddy is the best of all time,so much stick control, the best!!
You're right about that I think Gene Krupa Krupa should also be on this list ...him and Buddy Rich used to have drum offs back in the day
