Glad you liked the video, Andrew! Witnessing this go down in the studio was pretty special. If you're interested, you can check out Dennis' reaction to the track with drums here: ruclips.net/user/shortsotjgtBs2RLk
Cheers! 🤘
I've now seen this a second time. I don't know if this makes me want to pick up the sticks again or burn them forever.
Thanks for that! It’s what everyone wanted to see! Love Mr. Chambers, saw him with Santana. Love Mr. Carey as well…
Hopefully this means we get Danny Carey playing Dennis Chambers next!!!
That'd be insane Chris!
Can't imagine many able to tackle Dennis in his prime
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I think with Danny's strong fusion background he'd give it a good run.
Oh man that would be amazing!
Woaaaa up! Up this comment!)))))
I would LOVE to see Danny play Dennis' version of Cissy Strut.
So brave to attempt a completely different style, and impressive how well he did with his own style.
100%
I agree, the fact that he picked up straight away that it wasn’t for him, that’s supreme musicianship to the highest degree.
That was fantastic. Great idea. I don’t just want to see Danny react, though. I want them to get him to do the same thing with one of Dennis’s tracks - one listen, drumless track, go.
That'd be insanely difficult Mark
@@AndrewRooneyDrums that’s why it would be fun.
This a re upload. Something went wrong on the sync the first try...
I hope this one works better. Thanks for letting me know about the issue and I honestly hope you re post any original comments on this video so I can get to them!
CHEERS!
HOLD UP! When I watched the original video I thought Dennis heard the drums in the track. He absolutely NAILS this what the hell?!
Andrew reacting to Dennis playing Tool......what a perfect match!!! Had the pleasure enjoying Denins playing with John Mclaughlin back in the 90's, what a pleasure this was.
Really enjoying your channel Andrew; greetings from Germany :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Would have been cool as well to have Dennis’s reaction to the actual drum track
Look at the pinned comment. Drumeo added it, it’s gold.
I absolutely LOVED his 1st take on this track!!!!!! Killer drummer omfg. There is no doubt Danny ain't diggin this rendition and will be honored for sure!!
When I watched this Drumeo video and my first thought was "What will Andrew make of this". So glad you did this video.
Thank you Paul!
I thought you'd like Dennis, one of the things I really like is how he goes from cross sticking to open hand and back so effortlessly.
Yup. Ambidextrous style. Total limb independence.
I am no drummer by any means, but I am still amazed and appreciate the years of practice and playing all sorts of styles, to be able to fit in to any song, blindsided like this. I’m just a weekend rhythm guitarist.
Glad you enjoyed it Peter!
Danny has to approve this one! This was awesome! And yes we definitely need a "Danny Carey Reacts"
That'd be awesome wouldn't it!?
I'm an old guitarist and I am loving this channel.
THANK YOU!
"Not my thing" -> first attempt could be on a record... Holy sh#"t.
Dennis is in good company.
I was born in NYC. Moved at 38 years old to New Orleans. Stayed for a few then to Miami for 14 years.
When I moved to a very small town 7 years ago in NC I met a guy who became a very good friend of mine.
Out of all the big cities ...when I moved to the middle of nowhere I met a dude named Nathan. Nathan was a drum tech for Buddy Rich in the 70S. We would have endless conversations about drumming. Great story.
When Buddy was in tour , if the distance between gigs was far , but the days between was close....Buddy scheduled Slingerland to just send a new kit to the gig and he would just leave the kit he played at the venue.
Nathan asked Buddy if he could send a kit he was leaving back home. So he did , and Nathan asked me if I wanted sit behind a kit Buddy played ..once. I'm 60 now and due to health reasons ...I really stopped playing a few years back ...but this was once in a lifetime. So I did my best Buddy Rich impression. ...It was ugly but fun. Anyway....back to Dennis
Nathan told me that Buddy hated Rock n Roll and he really didn't like playing it.
As for my friend Nathan....at 67 years old he lost a fight with Covid and passed last year.
Great kind generous man with a heart of gold.
I like Dennis Chambers a lot and I mostly play rock or metal his version is great. Especially the double bass work at the end. To be great musician you need to find all kinds of music that you would not normally play to further your skills
💯👌
Drumeo just posted a short with Dennis's reaction to hearing Danny's part.
Thanks Mike!
These Drumeo videos are fantastic... Watch a legend. See how he approaches. Learn. Great stuff.
There is a video of Chambers subbing for David Garibaldi (has he made the channel?) in Tower of Power. Chambers has his own style (and is ridiculously clean) and yet hits all the necessary accents in the music. Really interesting to compare / contrast their approaches vs what the music requires.
Finally, I must admit that I'm really jealous of Chambers, Garibaldi, and Deitch's mastery of funk ghost notes with the left hand. Just fantastic talents. Great stuff.
Yes! All great drummers you mentioned
What an incredible talent Dennis Chambers! Super impressive in general however to smash this song out to that degree after hearing just once is mind blowing. I'm a long time Tool and Danny Carey fan and I absolutely loved this expression from Dennis. *****
I saw Dennis live in Bergamo two days ago (with Mike Stern, Bill Evans and Gary Grainger)... unbelievable.
prolly ur most interesting video yet -a fish outta water & he did brilliantly.
3:24 he was obviously shitting bricks from having to play over that time signature.
Nothing like being thrown in the deep end, haha. That Chambers kid will go places, he's okay. Actually, I would lose it and I've listened to this song heaps; do love the smile on Dennis towards the end. Does Danny proud.
Love it Todd!
got goosebumps at that build around 14:00
soul moving
LOVE IT
Listen to Dennis on Gary Willis’ album ‘Bent’. A masterclass in funk and odd time signature playing.
Thanks for the tip Richard!
The "awareness" comment at the beginning was solid and totally legit
Edit> I loved this video. Drumeo seriously needs to repeat this. That was fucking amazing !! The balls to step up like that !! MASSIVE respect
I need to see Vinnie do the same thing with Animals As Leaders!!
Great video Andrew. Dennis is a beast!
You mentioned (Niacin) one of the bands Dennis has played in with (Bass player extrodenar) Billy Sheehan and John Novello on the Hammond B3. Jazz/Fusion that is mind blowing.
I bet!
Thanks Robert
He made "Schism" sounding more complicated. Unbelievable job he did there. Imagine hearing Tool without the drums, how crazy it must had sounded to him. Danny Carey needs to see this.
I'm sure Danny has!
I would never try this , but thats how you learn 🎉
In the deep end. And publicly!
Digging his take....one listen?!...amazing.X
Yes Robert!
That was surprisingly similar to dannys track, I'm suitably impressed (at least at the halfway point as Im writing this)
Smashed it!
That was so good. You can tell from his chops that if he heart the drum track he'd nail it. It's super eery that, as you pointed out, the accents are really good on this. He made Danny style choices in particular places where he would be specifically on the closed highhat where it's super close to Danny and in the rot spot on the album track!🤘🤘🤘
Drummers are NOT normal, they will ALWAYS amaze me, they're damn near PSYCHIC! This was soooooooo good!🎵🖤🖤🖤🎵
yup. first thing i did when i saw that vide two weeks ago was send it to all my drummer friends. such a cool concept. i hope they do more like it.
Yes it's very interesting
I saw Dennis play live with The Brecker Brothers in London way back and he was out of sync then too 😅. Kidding of course, he was THE drummer to watch back then and still an incredible musician now. Seeing him play at the Zildjian Day in London will remain one of the musical highlights of my life.
HAHA!
Fantastic Richard
Great master ever! Great Dennis!
💯👌
I want to see Dennis react to what Danny plays.
YES! HAHA
ruclips.net/user/shortsotjgtBs2RLk
So I had to go back and watch Dany Carey playing it, and Dennis’ style for at least the first third or so of the song mirrored Dany pretty well, mainly just snare and cymbal work. The biggest difference was that I don’t think Dennis ever hit a tom, at least not the floor toms. Still an impressive performance! 👍😎
Focussed on the meat and potatoes of the time feel yup!
it amazed me how similar yet how different it was. Minus the very end you could probably gaslight someone into thinking this version was the original.
I saw Dennis at his first modern drummer drum fest appearance..insane drumming.
Yup. Mind bending stuff back in the day AND STILL
You need to react to the zildjian live featuring dennis chambers!!!!
Yes that's one of the Zildjian lives I haven't done
I can't wait to see this one, Andrew ! Dennis Chambers is a BEAST ! 100% EAR PLAYER !!! Doesn't know a THING about music in the educational sense. He's a true talent ! Sorry, LEGEND !
I just wish they would have shown Dennis listening to Danny's drumming at the end to see his reaction and get his feedback, also possibly see what Danny thinks of Dennis' version.
Just saw a small clip where Dennis gives his take after hearing Danny play. Suffice to say he liked it and said he felt the emotions Danny played. He pointed out what Danny did is when you listen to a song multiple times and get creative.
@@sharinglungs3226 Yes, but should have been included in the video, would have made it much more entertaining.
I think this was amazing. He did a great job👍
Imagining Dennis playing “The Pot”. He’d def catch the groove in a minute and would go to work!
"What does Danny do at this part"?
Danny: sippin water 🌝
14:00 I was also trying to remember what Danny did during this part bc Dennis was doing awesome and it fit so well
Dennis Chambers is insanely good; I first heard him on ‘Buddy Rich Memorial Concert’ playing against Gregg Bissonette, and Louie Bellson, he is a monster player
Danny is so humble he will be all in
This was sick. Nicely done!

Hey Andy, I am really rooting for that 100k!
I'm excited!
This was highly interesting. Amazing skills!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Btw. You a fan of Simon Phillips? I'm mostly a metalhead but also full of love for drummers of all kind. I have all the TOTO live blurays that i often put on. Jeff Porcaro was also a phenomenal drummer
Hi Andy. Just a quick Intro as I just came across you whilst ploughing through the many analysis channels on youtube. Thank you for giving me a better appreciation of the drums which enhances my enjoyment of music greatly. I do not play any instrument myself and like that you avoid technical terms, or explain them, without being condescending. I wonder if you have heard much Hawkwind? The double drummers on their track "Magnu" sounds unusual and thier album "Levitation" (A Headphone Album) is worth a listen IMHO.
PS. Apparently the Tool album "Lateralus" gets its strange time signatures via links to chaos theory, the golden ratio and other sacred numbers.
Can you do the latest from Nandi? She covers a Tool song also, and it seems so complex! (I’m not a musician & not familiar with the song but now I love it). Seems like she’s leveled up again significantly in her skill set - 2 pedals.
Oh wow. Sounds great. Thank you!
As much as I enjoy your videos Andrew, wearing a shirt of KITT from Knight Rider added so much coolness i turned on the heat! I now know i need to find me that shirt as well lol! Keep it up, greetings from Belgium
HAHA!
Thank you Raf :)
I'd like to hear Todd Suchermann and Anika Niles' interpretation of Schism...
YES!
Is it what Danny played? Nope. Is it musical and fun to listen to? Yup! I was just re-watching (again!) your reaction to "Anesthetize", and you mentioned Dennis on your short list of "mega-drummers" on which Gavin Harrison also appears. I wasn't familiar with his work, but I sure enjoyed his take on this track. When I first saw this cross my feed, I hoped you'd react to it. Glad you did!
I think he did it "drumless" because there's no way he could do it otherwise. He did a great job imo
True, if he listened to the original drum track then he would just play what Danny plays.
Amazing!
YES
Yeah man. Sync is much better than the previous one you posted! 💙👊🏼
All looking good now?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums sry brother. I got into something else. Yessir, it's pretty close to audio and video running together.
I think Dennis didn't really even listen to the original completely through - I think he thought that after hearing the first half of the tune he "got it" and only during his playthrough realised that there were even more parts and structures that he hadn't even heard before. So basically he had to react and figure out the last half of the tune "on the fly"
I wonder if they could have turned up the bass mix for him
👌
The part that Dennis plays H-hat over is just silent on the original track, no drums.
He listened without the drum tracks. That’s Very cool. I hate it of coarse. Danny’s drum parts are sacred. 😂🍻
LOVE THAT SHIRT!! Drum KITT ♥
🤣👌
"I wonder what Danny is doing during this part." He's playing pretty much the same pattern that Dennis is playing on the hi hats but he's swinging it around the toms.
WAIT...he did that by ear...wow thats god like
He was looking at his iPad... but not sure why. I don't think Dennis reads drum music (but I could be wrong)
Not even a drummer,I'm a stringed instrument guy, they're all the same really 😅 just seeing your reaction it almost gives you tingles, just like his.
I'm a metal guy I'm sure that vinny c..... did some work with megadeth who I love. Wouldnt be the first jazzish guy. One of their official drummers gars samuelsson was big into jazz.
Any keep up the content. You've got a good vibe :)
So impressive.
He did great!
As I mentioned before, If you are a student of "Tubular Bells", this rhythm is second nature
Buena interpretación de Chambers, no los conocía porque en general escucho más Metal que Rock, buena reacción Andrew. Saludos desde Chile
Hola Oscar. Muchas gracias!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Andew reaccion a Gabriel Parra!
He's laughing at how the time signature changes back and forth.
Came here for fun, got roasted.
BRUTAL
I understand why they didn't! but, sure would like to have seen his reaction to it w/ drums after his fantastic attempt. Still GREAT tho!
the main riff four measures are 5/8 6/8 5/8 7/8 repeat.
@Andrew Rooney Drums Brother this is just a delicious dollop of a video to watch...I mean Dennis gets a quick lesson and just lays it out...that snare tone is disgusting...got so much stank face that if the wind changed it would stay permanent...love ya work fam!
Filthy snareage!
@Andrew Rooney Drums nope Larnell listened to the drumless track also. The difference here is that we get to hear the original track with drums so we can compare what Dennis does with it, whereas they never played the original track to the audience in the Larnell video (I've since checked it and its just as awesome).
In the Metallica vid?
No! I'm sure he heard the drums!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums ah sorry I forgot about that one. I thought we were talking about the latin track! My bad
@@BennyboyTruth Yeah I knew the Latin track was drumless which made it even better :)
Pretty awesome what Dennis did with a drumless track here though!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums yeah, like he said, in his prime he would've smashed through that track no problem. The fact that he was still able to do what he did with it at his age (especially given that he very nearly died a few years ago) is highly commendable in itself ❤️
Need to Watch Alan Cassidy. The Drummer for The Black Dahlia Murder. He has Tons of Videos of Him Playing.
Andrew, I just saw 2 messages from you and it won't let me read them. From the first Dennis Chambers plays tool.
Thanks, Chad Johnson
I had to delete that video sorry Chad!
Funkadelic 👍🏻
YUP!
Amazing. I like it better the the original.
Regarding drummers playing other songs, there's a channel on RUclips by a one Cameron Fleury who has done parody videos such as Dream Theater's The Dance of Eternity but acted as if it were played by Lars from Metallica for example?! It was f'n hilarious!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What were you doing at age 6? Another great meme Andrew!
HAHA Marlene!
I don't want to sound like I'm harping, but I know you've done a couple of reactions to Kai Hahto and you've mentioned that you haven't heard NIGHTWISH his current band so I wanted to request a reaction to them so you could see him truly in his element with his band mates, specifically NIGHTWISH, Weak Fantasy live at Tampere because NIGHTWISH is an experience not just a band, a collection of the best musicians assembled in a single group who have been around since 1996 and are one of the best live bands existing today with one of, if not the most versatile and powerful female vocalists in music today, Floor Jansen, thanks.
Great call. Thanks for the tip Kevin!
How about review to Steve Shelton (Confessor) ^)
👌
Where's the delorean 😅
Believe it or not, Thomas had never even heard this track before he played to it. This was live, completely on the spot, and he absolutely killed it. - ruclips.net/video/5X1FaiXAb-s/видео.html
A professional at work for sure. I do find it interesting that Tool (and other groups)gets a lot of props for odd time signature/polymeter usage etc. in their music. Interesting, sure, but not worthy of fawning over in my opinion as groups have been doing this sort of thing for a long time. I am not trolling here, I am just trying to understand the fascination/reverence here.
Tool have said multiple times that the odd time signatures are intuitive for them, its not that they're trying to come up with the most complex time signatures.
@@antondavidovic3996 Yep, understood. I am not really even talking about complexity per se. It just to me, Tool's drummer comes up in a lot of discussions regarding this and I still not quite sure why that is. Talented group of musicians, but the drumming is not really something that particularly catches my ear as something that defines the songs. One thing about Tool is that when you hear them, there is no mistaking who the group is that is playing. For me it is more the SOUND of the singer, followed by the song structure. The drums for me are much further down the list for this band. But like everything, music is subjective so folks mileage may vary. Have a great day.
@@cecilkeebler4254 For everyone its something different. I'd go to say that technically speaking Danny is by far the most talented in the group, but Tool wouldn't be Tool without either of them. I've seen people say Justin makes Tool what it is, some say Adam, to everyone its something else that catches their ear the most. Also, its the chemistry between all of them that makes Tool what it is. Just look at how much their sound changed when they replaced Paul D'Amour with Justin. Not only did their sound change, but Maynard's lyricism as well...
Danny would not play at the part you asked.
🙏
So different.. and yet so groovy in its own right. But hey.. since he never listened to Tool before, of course he has no idea what to do there. Nevertheless.. the groove he put in there is brilliant.
