There's this place in here in the Netherlands that has a big open area where a lot of festivals are held. Dance, general Pop, Hip-Hop, Metal, etc... The surrounding area of course has to deal with the festivals and the numbers show that when it's time for the Metal shows, the people there can breathe easily. Hardly any vandalism, violence or other disturbances compared to every other festival. I think the worst effect it has is the fact that a lot of bars run out of beer...

I just wonder if she was in a Drum and Bugle Corp or band when she was younger. Her playing reminded me so much of Drum Corp days, which I was in. The way she handled her sticks were reminiscent of the way the snares ended a song made me especially think that.
Either way, she’s amazing! Thanks for sharing.

    • @asan8201
      @asan8201 Год назад

Yes, she started out in a drum and bugle corps called "The Blue Notes drum and bugle corps" back in her younger days. I googled it. I have actually seen a RUclips video of her practicing with a couple friends at a park for fun doing some classic drum corps snare stuff. I am an older woman who also played snare in the Blue Knights drum and bugle corps back in the late 70's so I recognize and remember well the hours of practicing rudimental drumming.

Something I don’t see discussed enough is how she’s minimized her movement to maximize her agility to adapt to a songs demands. It’s something a lot of drummers don’t discuss is getting older and adapting to getting slower and weaker with age. Compare her arm movement to the average drummer and you’ll see what I’m talking about when comes to the strength of her hits.

The thing she kills me with is the economy of movement. I played with an old-timer jazz drummer named Art Anton in the late 90s after he retired to my hometown of Yakima. He was the same way. He would absolutely kill the doubles, just looked like he was sitting rock still and absolutely blowing the crowd away. He was far and away the best drummer I had the honor of playing with during my jazz days. I didn't know it at the time but he had played with a lot of the greats including Stan Kenton and Frank Zappa.

We did a song by John Mayall and I'm not really sure what song it was because I was feeling no pain after many Guinnesses. I know it was not "Room to Move".

You have to realize this doesn't just "happen". Dorothea has spent a lot of time "PRACTICING" to get where she is today.
I agree. Listening to rock drummers is very tiring. Why? Because they all sound the same. The Buddy Rich coverage is what drumming is all about.
I have no idea who "66Samus" is, but very clearly .....CLUELESS!!! I guess "66Samus" has never seen a practice drum pad before ...or metal practice sticks ....or a music stand .....the kind of stand that holds music ......for most MUSICIANS when they actually PLAY MUSIC .....and READ MUSIC ...... and PRACTICE by READING DRUMMING RUDIMENTS BOOKS .....when they actually sit down to PRACTICE what's written in the rudiment books .....NOT put on some rock and hammer along.
The SHOCKED LOOK on "66Samus" face at 40 seconds ..."I think I know where this is going". Sure, ....you might ....but from your facial expression, you have never heard of a single-stroke, or double-stroke, or triple-stroke roll before .....and probably wouldn't know it if you saw it on manuscript either.
6:40 is called "stick control" ....something very few ....to no ....rock drummer has a clue about. ....and the notes are called "grace notes". Where do you people come up with "ghost notes"???? It is NOT "another word for it" .....once again CLUELESS.
Who the hell am I to laugh at ALL videos like these? I started percussion BEFORE Dorothea Taylor ...65 years ago ....with JIM BLACKLEY (you might want to look that up to understand) ...at the age of SIX, and studied with him for TEN YEARS. Listening to the constant verbal interruptions throughout this video ....just demonstrates one thing .....untrained ignorance. And the "Steve Gadd" snare? "Yamaha"???? Try ROGERS DYNASONIC on for size ..........no "name-dropping" needed.
      hahahahahaha
WELL DONE DOROTHEA......and I still have ALL my drum rudiment books!

She was recruited from Local 47 because drums could not be faked on the soundstage.
In later years she owned a nightclub in Redway California that started as a jazz club.
Joani ended up booking every kind of music you can imagine and often sat in.
Always dressed like a 50's music icon should be, she was quite the sight sitting in with metal, punk and really any kind of band you could imagine.

Pure talent and skill at work. What an absolute legend! 😄

Considering that such things get much more difficult after 60, she is ROCKIN' it. I really enjoyed your reaction to Dorothea. ✌👍 And to think it all started by beating eggs. 😜

"Wtf is a Pataflafla?" Lol! Dorothea is amazing, she just helped out me with some gear tips at Drumeo, a very reachable legend!

We forget that people in their 60's were born in the golden era of rock. They lived the songs we all still listen to like they were relased yesterday.

My Mum is 72, she was a Mod in the 60s in England, all scooters with the headlights and thousand mirrors lol. And Motown and Beatles, all that stuff. It never goes away, I can't ever see my Mum being a sitting on the porch knitting kind of older woman lol

She truly is amazing! There's some fantastic female drummers out there.
Karen Carpenter was a jazz-BEAST back in the day! Left us too soon...
    Dorothea is an inspiration!

Karen Carpenter was a spectacular drummer. You would never have guessed this if you only knew her lite-pop songs that she sang. She really only ever wanted to be a drummer, but was pushed to sing by her brother, as I recall.

@@CyrilAndPriscilla Yes she considered herself a drummer who sang. I think there was pressure from the record company too

I used to play in a band with my husband. I was the vocals and my husband was the drummer and now our 6 y.o. daughter is showing interest with percussion instruments and beats in general. Man, I can only imagine how cool would it be to have a mom or a grandma thats this bad-ass with the drums. I bet we'd be playing together so much.

There is far too much media telling young people that when they grow up, they need to give up what they love. Which is a complete and utter crock! Dorothea is absolutely right--you are NEVER too old to play (pun intended)!
And, watching you celebrate her with such unabashed joy and enthusiasm was such a breath of fresh air! Thank you for brightening my day, you are a delight!

I mean yeah it's cool that she's an old lady playing this kind of music, for sure, but when you think about it, how old are all of our favourite metal bands from the late 70s and early 80s? Lars Ulrich is almost 60. Nicko mcbrain is 70. And think about all of the fans who learnt to play their favourite metal songs back then and who are now grandmas and grandpas. Far out. :/ Talk about the persistence of time! ;)

What do you mean Nicko is 70? He can't be! That would mean I'm 55 and that is Bul....ahhh crud. I am 55. How the heck did all my fav's make me so old?

I wound up here after randomly being recommended her video playing "Down with the Sickness" today. I'm not even a drummer and I have no idea why it was recommended to me, but I'm so glad it was because I found her AND you! I just feel compelled to tell you that you, sir, are an absolute peach. This whole video put such a smile on my face. It is so refreshing to just see people being kind and excited and having fun! Thanks for that, you seem awesome. Very occasionally I come across a content creator who reminds me of my friend group, and you do. I imagine you are extremely fun to hang out with! Keep being sweet and having fun man, you're awesome.
