    Would have been nice to have had those Nova 2s when I was at uni in Bolton, bloody hell it was awful having to get on the old Pacer from Machester to Bolton, I don't know how some people ever managed to put up with that all the way up to Glasgow.
    So the Nova 1 is a Class 802.
    The Nova 2 is a Class 397.
    And the Nova 3 is an interesting semi-multiple unit with a Class 68 loco at one end.
    Honestly the Nova 3 confuses me a bit, but hey all the trains can do 125mph, uniform speed for the win as that means more trains more often. I'm so happy that we're a dammed good chunk of the way through modernising our rolling stock, and 2021 is a great year for bedding the trains in as they wont be slung in at the deep end and expected to handle thousands upon thousands of passengers each day like they would in a normal year.

    But are the seats comfortable, they look so thin and unpadded? The seats at tables look nice, but still, I would be concerned about comfort.

  • @leonblittle226

    I'm still shocked at how loud the class 68 is for a modern built locomotive, even a 67 with the ETS on seems less noisy.

  • @Bentcypress
    @Bentcypress 3 года назад

    Thanks for a good video. The first train seemed to be awfully noisy and in all three trains, the seats looked to be very hard and uncomfortble. I don't think I would care to go any distance on any of them.

    Looks great both inside and outside, but after travelling through countries where genuine high speed (250-330 km/h) is the norm, shiny trains in the UK just don't cut it for me anymore. We might be able to have nice, clean trains that look good, but we're decades behind in speed.

      Agreed. The East Coast and West Coast main lines are still restricted to 125 mph and with many bottlenecks. If the trains could run at their capable speed of 140 mph there would be less justification for HS2. And why stop at 140 mph?

    • @gpurunner3407
      @gpurunner3407 3 года назад

      @@ds1868
      but British short nose trains run at 140mph will cause sonic booms and a lot of claims from neighbourhoods.
      To enable above 140mph operation Network rail must put sound protection walls in city areas and fence for plains to remove animal strike risk.
      Above 125 mph operation needs cab signalling system like TVM / ETCS /ATC .
      Other countries high speed new lines radius are 7000m /4000m /2500m , but N700 series and 700 series can run at 275km/h / 255km/h on 2500m radius.
      Signalling system replacement is not easy as you thought.
      super ECML specification for superexperss.
      radius : 2500m
      signalling system : ETCS
      electrification 25KV Overhead
      Others : No Level crossing , Fence , Sound protection wall ,separate from regional trains , reduce points
      Your suggestion is equivalent to make New East Coast Main Line like HS2 or Shinkansen.

      In reality we went Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport, Man Airport to Oxenholme, Oxenholme to Manchester Piccadilly (all Nova 2), transferred by class 185 to Manchester Victoria, Nova 1 Man Vic to York. Next day, Nova 3 York to Scarborough and back. Then Nova 1 York to Liverpool. But in the video I'm showing Nova 1, 2, 3 in that order.

    @the man in the seat 61 : The Max speed of the Nova1 is 125mph/200kmh. How is it with the max service speeds on the TransPennine lines ? Is 125mph a service speed for most of the lines or only on a very limited trajectory ?
    When I check Bahn.de Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds (73 miles) takes 1h46 ! That is incredibly slow !

    • @dancarey285
      @dancarey285 3 года назад

      I believe it only runs at 125 between York and Newcastle. The transpennie line is also steep and not electrified between Leeds and Manchester meaning diesil is slow to accelerate and climb the hills. The line desperately needs additional capacity and electrifying.

    It all looks very nice but it's the same awful seating as on an Azuma or the new GWR trains. Uncomfortable seating is becoming standard across our entire railway network and nobody seems to care. Even the worst French regional trains offer better comfort than our main line trains.

    • @seat61
      @seat61  3 года назад +6

      This was one of the things we were looking out for and wanted to try. I like a firm backrest, not so much a firm seat squab. The Nova seats were fine, I'd like them a bit softer, but fine. Then sat on a class 185 seat between Man Picc and Man Vic and sank into it - was actually taken aback at how bouncy it was. Almost too much so. 'Ironing board' seats are mentioned in the Williams Shapps Plan for Rail, no less, and they want to bring forward seat replacement.

      @@seat61 The Japanese Shinkansen trains are the best. Loads of leg room, very comfortable chairs which can turn around so either for 2 people side by side or 4 facing each other and the train is the same same level as the platform. No scrambling up steps with heavy luggage. Plus, the train carriages stop and line up exactly with markings on the platform so you also know where to get on.
