      Totally agree with you, I use to go here sometimes when at college in the '80s, it is sad though that they appear to have to have done only the bare minimum in investment since then, but that could apply to everything outside of the south-east, good luck with your education.

    As in other reviews, TransPennine seem to offer a good product with these Class 802 units, although I think Lumo have done slightly better on the interior (perhaps they took their cue from TP and improved on the padding, lighting and several other small points. I must go back and have another look at Lumo to confirm my thoughts. At any rate, these units make up for the lack of capacity on a single Class 185. I was fortunate to have a couple of rides on these units and thought that a 5 car set would have been a better offering. i'm just wondering what my own local regional train operator, V/Line, might do when it comes time to replace 4 and 5 car loco-hauled sets that have a catering facility for medium/long distance journeys. The lovely V/Locity units at 3 cars long just don't cut it for journeys such as Melbourne to Echuca, Maryborough or Bairnsdale. Anyway, thanks again for a great review of the TP Class 802 units and hope you and your family and friends have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and can avoid this latest Covid curse, Omicron. Cheers from Michael.

    I appreciate that different coaches may give different ride. My Azuma to Edinburgh a few months ago vibrated a lot above 115mph. I'm booked on lumo in Feb, so I'll see if there's any difference. My local 80n in the West Country can also be a mixed bag.
    Wrt seats, the 2nd class GWR seats catch me on the back of my thighs where the seat rises towards the front edge, but as you say, the shape is generally ok.
    I worry the units will age quickly, given the current variation in ride quality between different coaches.

    My criticism of the standard class seats on any 80x train is their shape. Padding doesn't matter too much, but I like to be able to relax into a seat on a long journey like this. I felt I could comfortably do so on any HST or even a class 166 Turbo. But the 80x seats I find are too upright so I can't relax into them.

    I travelled on one of these train recently between Edinburgh and Newcastle. Overall they are very smart looking trains with nice interior, but I found the seats to be a little too uncomfy even for a journey of just under two hours. Then again that might just be because I’d had a hard day at work and I’d only just gotten off an overcrowded class 385 from Glasgow to Edinburgh and of course that’s on one of the infamous ironing board style seats. So by the time I’d gotten to Newcastle I was begging for something really comfy

    The Huddersfield station is very impressive but I’m surprised that it seems small inside. I was expecting a huge hall to match the classic facade but it seems you immediately go directly to the platforms. I wonder if it was always like that. I would think that a Victorian station would have had an impressive passenger ticketing and waiting area.

      Huddersfield is due a pretty substantial rebuild in the near future as part of the upgrade of this route to high speed running and electrification. As far as Im aware though the passeneger facilities are very similar to when the station opened and wont change a huge amount after the upgrade in terms of size (aside from a potential northern entrance linked to a redevelopment of the goods yards on that side of the station).

    • @gameforalaugh5743

      Signalling, pretty much, which keeps the max at 125mph

    • @andrewwilson6240
      @andrewwilson6240 2 года назад +1

      There are a number of issues. There is a national upper speed of 125mph. This has been agreed due to drivers concern about (colour light and semaphore) signal slighting. The infrastructure places various limitations of speed for reasons of ride quality, wear and tear, safety and cost. Frequently also the mix of fast, stopping and freight trains mean that the quick train would just catch up with a shower one and sit behind restrictive signals

    • @stevieinselby
      @stevieinselby 2 года назад +3

      Unless both trains and track use in-cab signalling, there is an absolute maximum speed limit of 125mph, because at higher speeds than that drivers don't get long enough sight of each signal, especially if it may be showing a flashing aspect, and so there is a higher risk of them misreading the signal aspect. (This is quite generous - in the USA, I believe in-cab signalling is required at 80mph).
      Apart from that, there can be a range of reasons. The most common three are:
      1️⃣ Signalling. The signal spacing will be designed for a particular linespeed to ensure that trains can stop from the first sight of a yellow signal before passing a red. Sometimes there can be split speed limits, where certain classes of train (with better brakes!) can go faster than others.
      2️⃣ Curvature. A lot of lines have curves on and a safe/comfortable speed to take the curves may limit the speed that trains can go at. This is a particular issue on the TransPennine route between Manchester and Leeds!
      3️⃣ Permanent way. If the trackbed is not made to the highest standard then it might not be able to sustain trains travelling at higher speeds. If there are structures such as platform edges or tunnels that are close to the line (especially on curves) then a lower speed may be needed to ensure that the train isn't rocking too much and in danger of hitting them.

      @richardwills-woodward5340 2 года назад +2

      @@stevieinselby All drivel if you go back to the 1970's and 1980's where trains regularly exceeded 125mph right up to 140mph on occasions. The issues are due to unions complaining. Two drivers used to be in the can when speeds exceeded 110mph. They used to be professionals. Today, anyone has to be able to do it and so standards are lowered accordingly (just like universities and so on). The fact is, drivers used to be able to drive. They used to understand their business.
      The reason limiters were introduced in 1992 was European monopoly rules after lobbying in Brussels. This meant German companies would benefit from a market which imposed regulation locking out British ideas that were already being tested (flashing green was a great idea and not at all problem to be seen as the excuses stated). Without flashing green, you had the option of a green with a sash across it (used now anyway but not for this). It was not beyond the wit of man. Once you regulate innovation away, you get a slower, less able railway. Further, people used to be able to dress themselves too in the 1970's, 80's and 90's. Uniforms were for train drivers and on-baord staff. Ties were done up and no tattoos showing with half done ties and lousy presentation more generally. It was also the case that that was no need for a crew change every 5 minutes. All examples of the UK losing standards.

    I was fortune to do that journey from Leeds to Edinburgh on a TPE Nova 1 just prior to the first lockdown for £2 each way!! I got the tickets in the TPE ticket sale. Also, at Morpeth they switch back to diesel for the remainder of the journey as there is insufficient power to meet the demand for trains running on electricity.

    Definitely agree at 11:03 the livery of their trains really does look so much better than the old livery. I always have that whenever I see their trains in person.

    Sorry I missed this on Monday. The holiday threw me off & I forgot. Yes, your home-based train station is a beautiful structure. It's nice to visualize where you depart from. Your current train is sleek & modern. Peeking in at first class doesn't seem to have seats any thicker than what you had. Everything does seem to be quite clean & well kept. For the price & distance it was a goodly price. Hoping they get the food service back on board. Merry Xmas & a happy, healthy New Year. Happy traveling.

    Felix & Bolt !!! 😍😍👍👍👍😆Those trains all looked very nice !!! And this train ! Those blue chairs are looking good 👍 The padding looked a bit too thin ,though !! But,you said very comfortable despite some bad reputation ! Do they reclin ? It looked o.k.for a 3hr trip !! Very clean ,too !! Does it have a cafe ? I just wondered . It seems like every train stations in England has Costa coffee !!? Lol. Very convenient !! What a huge platform in York !!! I'd love to go to Whitby someday !! I am planning to visit Devon ! Your videos are always very nice & interesting !! Your vlogs make me feel like travelling all over the world by train !!! That must be a fantastic thing to do !!! 😍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🎄🎁🚈💕💞

    What are the chances this pops up in my recommended when I took this exact journey with my partner a few weeks ago to see family. The train itself was over 20 minutes late which isn’t uncommon and as this is the last train to get to leeds from Huddersfield before 9 it was rammed with commuters for the first 20 minutes, although after this it was quite a peaceful journey. It’s a shame its the only direct service but neither transpennine or cross country seem like they’ll be putting another service on any time soon.

    Hitachi trains are awful, GWR, LNER are admittedly the only 2 companies I have been in but after about 40 minutes you are in some discomfort because the seats are genuinely awful.

    Great to see the Huddersfield Station again. We have followed Felix for some time and when we were visiting Manchester (from New Zealand) in 2017 we were pleased to see her in person when we visited Huddersfield. I have heard you mention Her Royal Floofyness before in your Reports.

    Nice review of what I would call "just another class 80x" - although TPE are calling it the Nova 1, from what I saw it looks just the same as another Class 80x...

    Train delayed - tried to get compensation - sent all the relevant evidence (very time-consuming and a purposely ridiculous maze to negotiate) then the clowns there sent a mail saying claim denied as the delay was under 15 minutes when it was CLEARLY from all the evidence OVER 15 minutes. Won't be travelling with this lot ever again.

    Lovely video as ever, but extremely difficult to watch because it stopped about every few minutes for a non existent ad break that meant a blank screen and buffering for 10 seconds. The usual advertising played.

    You should do the York to Harrogate to Leeds line - awful jointed track, semaphore signals and parts of it are single lined.
