I LOVE 'old' tech, and I LOVE the idea of reviewing 'old' tech! I shoot with a 2010 era Nikon D3s, a 1960's medium format film camera, and drive a 2012, 4WD (NOT AWD), gas guzzling, body on frame SUV, with 2-speed transfer case, and I'm NOT getting rid of any of them any time soon. Old-school is the best school.
I don't share the fear of higher ISO on cameras of this age. In spite of having much more recent cameras, I still often use my D200 and get perfectly acceptable results at 1000 ISO. I have seen so many reviewers overstating the case with "noise", wanting perfectly clean images at 6400 ISO etc. I was originally a film user and any digital noise is similar to film grain. It is always the content that counts.
Great video :) classic camera 📷 great images too, you have a great eye 👁 - However I use a LUMIX G9 and GH5 with Leica lenses for professional shoots all the time (micro 4/3rds) & many of my colleagues use the system too - I also have a entire Nikon full frame set-up too, but I have never had any of my clients question me using micro four thirds on shoots, I’d like to think I do have a good grip on photography - just because a photographer uses micro 4/3rds does not mean they know what they are doing :) but hey, I guess I’m just a bit sensitive about people bagging the format lol 😂 Anyway - Great video again, awesome topic 📷🙌📷
I just got a D200 from MPB and the raw files are quite beautiful and rarely had to do any post-processing. It's a lovely kit and i love the ergonomics.

It's a fully armed and operational battle station. I still use this thing today and it takes great pictures. For night shots, it's good to have a pentaprism rather than a black mirrorless screen
These things sell for under $100 frequently in good condition. Mind blowing. Amazing prices for awesome cameras still extremely useable today. I should just hang around best buy in the camera section and just talk people out of buying the $500 kit cameras with kit lenses. If you get a d200 for $100 then you can get an awesome prime lens for $400. Cant beat that!
A few years ago, I bought one with 4250 activations for $200. With a Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm f/4-5.6G DX it's an over-sized "point-'n'-shoot" that I'm willing to use in places/environments where I wouldn't want to risk my D750. I bought the AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX for top quality results but the 18-70 honestly performs as well. The 35mm DX lens is very small and light though. I love this camera!
By far one of the best cameras ever made, even in 2024. That flash is more powerful than most top mounted flashes, definitely more powerful than all of Nikon's new bodies. The body is more durable than anything they're currently putting out. The CCD sensor jpegs hold together significantly better than any CMOS sensor you can buy since its release all the way to today in 2024. The only problem this camera has is not having super high iso settings in-camera. Never needed more than 1600 even at night. My only complaint of the D200 is I wish it had a fast frame rate, like around 9 or 12. I regularly shoot 1600 or 3200 iso and just run an ai denoise if I don't want the grain. But the grain disappears when you print and when you reduce the resolution for online use. This body wants f1.8, f1.4, and f1.2 lenses.
I bought one in March, 2021 for $180 with only 1600 clicks on it. Absolutely minty. Also included an MB-200 grip which I don't particularly like or use.
Nice honest review of the D200. I bought mine back in 2009 as a used body (albeit like new) complete with 2nd battery. Mostly used it for product photography as a graphic designer and still consider myself only as amateur photographer - at least I seem to be able to ‘frame’ a photo well unlike most people I see. The camera has served me well, both batteries are still going strong. I’ve finally updated to a D7500 and am enjoying the low light performance of that; I’ll likely keep the D200 and use it mainly outdoors with the 35mm 1.8 lens on it and when my son is a little older, I expect he’ll take many 1000’s more photos with it. Buying the D7500 has motivated me to review everything I thought I knew about photography - so much yet to learn... Note: I kept with the DX format as I have a few OK lens and couldn’t justify the cost of a whole new suite of digital lenses.
9:28 "The only real weak point is ISO." ISO is overrated, I'd rather have noise, i.e., "grain" than blurry images. Newer super-high ISO cameras are muddy/soft/blurry at those high ISO settings.
The D200 was a pro grade camera and it still is today. It's just cheap because it is superceded by newer models and more modern tech. Most photographers, even pro, can get things done with a D200. Great build quality and nice colors.
For anyone wanting to become a serious photographer, but short on bucks, this is a great place to start. And the supply of excellent old (and cheap) Nikkor lenses to use on it is gobsmacking.
Nice One. My Dad had one of these new when it came out. It has the same ISO range and usability as my D3X (I don't go above 400 & I mainly use for portraits with studio strobe). It would be interesting to shoot with a D200 see the CCD sensor output as I've never edited files from one of these. 😀
Only recently getting back into photography. I bought one of these a few months back from ebay, ended up getting a great deal as it was barely used. The photos come out great and feels sturdy as concrete.
Good job describing this work horse camera. 10 mp is more then enough for most clients. Thanks, I will keep. My D200 along with my Nikon lenses that I used on my Fuji Film S2 (that finally quite) .
Great video Thanks for sharing I have pulled my 20 year old D 200 back out and have been pleased with the shots that it takes for what I use it for. As an action camera shooter I shoot live events like Air Shows and Race Track events. Good to see that others still consider it a viable camera .
Being used in the day by many pro photographers the low ISO is not so much of an issue when using Pro level fast aperture lenses such as a 180 F 2.8 or a 35 f1.4 or even the 50 F1.8 generally sharper than the 50 f 1.4 or F1.2. There are of course fast zooms as well like the 80 to 200 F 2.8 which are quite affordable these days in good used condition especially out of Japan. Therefore I do not see the limit before noise intrudes as being a significant problem as long as you use a decent Pro level fast lens therefore negating to a great extent the need for high ISO settings or limiting the shutter speed usable for different circumstances. As always ISO, F stop and Shutter speed to obtain the exposure you want has more than one variable so any one oft the three can be used to compensate for one or more of the others and still get a result
I dunno, I wanted to like this video because I love older tech, but the hate on MFT combined with aesthetics of gear, “pussy” mode reference, and on a really shithouse quality video just makes me cringe. Knowing your shit helps, if you can't pull off a pro shoot (weddings, portraits etc, excluding large scale product stuff) with a Mirco 4/3 camera & suitable pro glass you shouldn't be calling yourself a photographer.
Never had a D200, however I have the D60, and though the sensor in the D60 is not made by sony, it's a very similar 10MP CCD with ISO from 100 to 1600. And let me tell you, the performance on this sensor is absolute garbage when it comes to noise, I'd rather keep it below 400 if I can, 800 is already pushing it too far. Those things make m appreciate the switch to CMOS haha That said though, the D200, if you have good light, is probably one of the best cameras you can get for the money right now, as these go for very fuckin cheap. Though, if you're someone that wants to do events and stuff like that, the D300 is a noticeable upgrade from the D200, for not that much more money. Gotta decide if you prefer the 12MP CMOS or 10MP CCD, but either way, autofocus is much more reliable on the D300
D200 is not an entry level camera. It's just cheap because it's old. It's a pro camera. Originally marketed as prosumer camera with all the bells and whistles of the professional camera of that time. And it's still a great camera. Megapixel count does not matter anymore since AI upscalers do a perfect job 99% of the time. Same goes to HDR. It can be faked without anyone noticing. So, just find a camera that you like and stick with it. There's no need buy new models anymore. It's just a posh attitude photographers have to somehow justify their professionalism by having an expensive gear not affordable to average user. Those times are gone folks.

i have a d70s that i converted to shoot full spectrum as well as a d200 to shoot normal light. the 2 best imo
