    Great comparison Mr.50mm, amazing video. The d80 is an amazing camera with beautiful output, the pictures and controls are top of the line.

    Great video about D80! This is my first DSLR, and I bought it new with the 18-55mm kit len and the 55-200mm vr. It is still the powerhouse today. My D7500 is technically better, but I love D80's noisy shutter and simplicity. I have a grip to improve handling.

      Nice! It's an awesome one to start on. Yeah it's nice to go to something very straightforward and focused on one thing at times! How do you like your D7500?

      @Mr50mmish D7500's low-light performance is great and it's also fast enough for cats, dogs, and kids photography. An EXCELLENT DSLR in 2024.

    1. @5:27 Even though it came out later, the D80's Custom menu is the older linear numering style vs the D200's current nested alphanumeric style.
    2. D200 is easier to back button focus (separate button, closer to thumb).
    3. D200 can take a GPS unit, D80 can't.
    4. D200 has a odd color mode (not on D80) that's a precursor to JPG color profiles. Seems only NX Studio (not Lr) can understand it.

    In my often zealous quest for CCD cameras, and being a Nikon guy myself, I got a D80 and a D90 to compare the mighty CCD with the newish CMOS. I still prefer the CCD a bit more. Seems the tech in CCD was a little more refined at the time as far as image quality. You should check out the CCD ravings of Carmine Tavena on these here youtubes as he is a seasoned 50 year veteran of photography in New York. He often waxes poetic of CCD imagery and how it was origonally developed by Kodak as an alternative to film. So it mimics the qualities of Kodachrome. He also simply loves the art of photography.

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah it's fun to look at the technologies. Yeah I'll have to check that gentleman out! Definitely during that era the CCD had a pretty substantial amount of development in it where CMOS was still catching up. If I remember right the CMOS tech at this time did perform well specifically in some high iso applications at the time but the CCD had better DR and Color depth.

    Honestly, I prefer the d80 because it is light and compact and has the essential functions but also convenient automatic controls. It's very easy to find it with a few clicks and it costs little. The D200 is heavier, more expensive and with a number of functions that are difficult to remember and almost useless to the photographer who thinks about the images and not the camera.

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  5 дней назад

      That's fair. If you like it for its compactness. I do think it's unfair to downplay the importance of ergonomics. Plus I'm not sure what other functions the D200 has that are "difficult to remember" and "almost useless".
      The key difference between the 2 for me were the D80s inability to meter manual F mount lenses, important for buyers who want to use older lenses. Plus the D80s slightly worse ergonomics. With the D80 needing to use the side menu buttons as dual function buttons where the D200 had dedicated ones that were placed in a way that could be actioned quicker.
      Both are otherwise fine cameras to play with.

      @@Mr50mmish I agree with you but today I believe there is no longer a need to use old lenses. Almost 20 years have passed now and excellent modern lenses can be found at low prices. Not even my F80 can mount the old lenses and it was still film.

    I went from the D200 to the D80 just because it is smaller and lighter. Also had the D50, but that had too many limitations in comparison. Good review, keep it up!

    • @TomAnsinkVideos
      @TomAnsinkVideos Месяц назад +1

      @@Mr50mmish I like it a lot, but now that I found a baby D200, I am thinking of buying a D700 that someone is selling here. I wonder if the colors are the same. But that is even heavier. After I will have to look for a baby version again haha. Or a D600/610 I saw your D200/D600 video. Is it much bigger than the D80?

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  Месяц назад

      @TomAnsinkVideos Hmm if lightness is the worry the D600/D610 might be the way to go. So the D600 is about 70g lighter than the D200 but that does mean it's still quite a bit heavier than the D80 by about 190g. Still it is lighter than the D700. Otherwise I think you'd have to go mirrorless!

    • @TomAnsinkVideos
      @TomAnsinkVideos Месяц назад +1

      @@Mr50mmish Well, the main thing for me is color. I compared the D200 with different cameras, making the same photos in raw with the same settings. Canon 6D, Fuji X100T, Olympus EM10iii (even my iPhone). I think these are all "better" cameras, but I just prefer the colors from the old Nikon's. This cinematic look somehow. Also, I enjoy more the optical OVF´s than the EVF´s. The reason I am thinking now d600/700 is mainly the full frame sensor. A Canon 6Dish with D200 colors would be excellent.
      Also, I do have to say that now that I have the D80, it is lighter and smaller, but it basically goes in the same camera bag, and in practice, it's not much of a difference. Maybe I offer 250 for the D700. I would be interested in comparing it to the D80. Apparently, the D700 is the color king. Hey, but thanks for your recommendation!

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  Месяц назад

      @TomAnsinkVideos yeah if your into colors the D70 might be the way to go anyways there are many people that tell me it's beyond good for a CMOS. Haha I still gotta get my hands on one again. I had one a long time ago (maybe 10 years ago) but honestly I barely remember using it much.

    Thank you for sharing . I have two Nikon D 200 , their a marvellous camera delivering a filmic image .
    I've also had the Nikon D 80 , however I didn't like the grain it produced , it is significantly different to the Nikon D 200 , I don't know why ?, all I know is that for some reason theses two cameras produce a different image quality .
    The noise / grain that of the D 200 resembles film grain , though the grain / noise on the D 80 I found looked rather unpleasant , it's difficult to describe , it's just not filmic , however by and large overall the D80 produced a perfectly acceptable image , I sold my D80 & never purchased another one .

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  Месяц назад +4

      Good day, I personally don't find the images that different but there is a technical reason for why it is different. The don't share the same sensor, The D200 uses the Sony ICX-483-AQA. Where the D80 and the other 10mp CCD camera's from Nikon use the Sony ICX-493-AQA. It's changed in a few ways, the number of channels for the ADC were reduced from 4 to 2, this was apparently done for a couple reasons but the primary was to reduce potential banding noise. The con was that it reduced the potential max FPS of the system from 5 to about 3.3. The one in the D80 also gained a few optimizations for power savings. But I assume that and some internal Nikon tuning made the the D80's output differently.

      D80 might be a good way to go then, but if you are ok with the D300 weight the D200 is what I'd suggest over the D80 for the improved ergonomics and metering using manual F mount lenses.

      @ started looking for one now and I will be familiar with the layout as well on a d200. I think it comes down to the grip probably being my problem with the canon 5d because I have smaller hands the d300 grip probably feels more comfortable making the camera more comfortable to carry and to use 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️.
