Too bad I got into cars in 1987.. From 1982 on up to about 1986, I spent more than enough time and money with John in the Schwinn Bike Shop on the corner of 228th. and White Plains Road in the Bronx. I remember fondly looking at this exact spec Redline, as well as Mongooses, Hutches, GHP's, Haro's, Diamond Back's etc. I had a Huffy Stu Thomsen, so yeah, all the bikes I just mentioned were my dream bikes. I can remember this Redline costing like $350-$400. Add another $50+ for a Hutch! Customizing my Huffy to stand out against bikes like this, is what has me customizing my vehicles today! Thanks for the blast from the past!!
Where did you figure out the original price? Why would the RL 20-II cost so much more? The RL-20 in BMX Plus ads from around 85 was about half that price. Is that stem the original coating?
Chip is the man when it comes coating. If you ever need polishing or chroming, Chaby's in Massachussets. He did a DK stem for me and it looks stunning. Chabys.com Super good guy and will text you photos when he's done.
Yes these are beautiful bikes and I had the yellow version I'm guessing in 1988 or 89. And yes they would be great to have as a collector's piece but nothing more. As an older Rider, someone who actually rides his BMX bikes, this would just be a showpiece for me. But I'll take my modern geometry and quality of my Sunday and we the people complete over anything old school.and before anyone makes a comment on alleging I can't afford this, thankfully yes I can I'm just saying it would be a waste of money for me that's all. Still this is a nice bike to have for someone that's not really planning on riding it and just to collect.
this is funny because i ride my 1986 mongoose FS-1 *mint condition* survivor (yes that's right - not repainted, not restickered, nor rechromed in lavender (2nd rarest color option to lime green) from the original owner) 3X/wk over 8 miles each run around my town lake.. this frame is only 18.5" top tube. im 43, 6ft, 180lbs. this is mongoose's first freestyle bike EVER, and it has skyway 6 spokes, inverted rear brakes, integrated cable guides, threaded forks with hi/low positions for pegs, an ACS ROTOR, gnurled handlebars and rear triangle with a 'loop' for grabbing/standing.. say what you want about it, but it had everything top freestyle bikes had at that time, 4130 triple butted cr-mo whereas even GT started using 'tri-moly' by 87 on their performers and moved manufacturing from USA/Japan to taiwan. as far as modern bikes and modern geometry - you got me on geometry, but not on strength. you'd never break my FS-1 i also have a 1984 REDLINE prostyler, which was/is considered a higher-end bike than my mongoose.. but it's not. honestly. it's weaker structurally. the headtube is puny. these forks taper down.. and to THIN dropouts.. every bar behind the seat tube is like a twig. that stem is so narrow, it's clamping force just SUCKS.. if i bunny hop, my bars twist downward lol. outside of the gussets at the downtube, there's nothing special about my prostyler frame nor its components except for my OGK mags (whom made these precious "peregrine master" wheels *for* peregrine btw - so all these ever were are rebranded OGKs)
Finally, a decent video of the fabled RL20II. Thanks great video and really cool to see one this good too.. your video is alot better than my "Healing Supermax2 bmx" video.. Check mine out?
Being from the NYC.. That 1985 Redline RL 20-II is official as It can be just as I remembered
Good job bro that bike is mint...
Got that right..TURQUOISE! Thank you! Nobody in OUR days called that color teal...it was always Turquoise! Awesome RL20II!
that is the staple color of dope freestyle bikes of that time

My 85 is all scratched up from us moving a few times
From what I remember Redline was always the most expense of the trick bikes.
This was maybe the craziest product in the scene back then...
I have the same color but mine have a black bb color and it's original not restored.
A thing of beauty
Have a black n gray 87 sitting in my basement collecting dust . Might sell it might restore it
have you still got your 87 RL20 II??
