I always loved how Pinhead speaks; so classy. He can make anything sound like Shakespeare. I read somewhere that the film studio wanted Pinhead to have witty one-liners like Freddy Krueger and the Evil Dead movies. I’m glad that Clive Barker didn’t listen to them and had Pinhead inspired by Dracula; classy and articulate.

Here's a cool little detail. There were plans to crossover Hellraiser with Halloween. Wes Craven was writing the script but the Akkad bros put a stop to it. Craven pushed so hard for it but after many years he gave up and focused on Scream. Not much is known about the plot but it was rumored that the Cenobites gained control of Michael and used him to bring them souls. The working title was supposedly HELLOWEEN.

You should really read the book, The Hellbound Heart. It really goes into detail about the suffering. • @Theomite

The technical subgenera would called "Splater-punk" (graphically described gore) and borrows heavily from hypersexual themes and BDSM culture. Movies like Hostel (2005), Martyrs (2009), or Audition (1999) would all be fair examples of this. Cronenberg is the original body horror creator, focusing more on bodily transformation, infections, mutations, with a heavy intertwining of phycological themes. An example would be The Fly (1986), transformation into a hybrid insect and all the horror that does to a person's mind as well as their relationships.

Though they get away from it in later movies, the Cenobites are not really meant to be evil. It's as pinhead said. They are angels to some, demons to others. They bring you pleasures you can't dream of, but you must call them; they just don't come.

  • @oxhine

Hey, Dasha! "Hellraiser" was the penultimate franchise of the indie horror cycle of the late '60's-'80's beginning with George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" in 1968 and ending with Stan Winston's "Pumpkinhead" in 1988. It is the most unique and layered member of this group.
Clive Barker was ascribed the mantle of successor to Stephen King when the maestro famously said in a blurb, "I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker." A number of his books and short stories have been adapted to film including "Lord of Illusions", "Midnight Meat Train" and "Books of Blood".
"Hellraiser" is based on a novella entitled "The Hellbound Heart". Producers asked for a name change for the film version because the original title sounded too romantic. At a loss, Barker put it to the production staff to come up with an alternative and a middle-aged woman on the film crew came up with a winner: "What a Woman Will Do for a Good F**k!" Lol.
I thought the cast of mostly unknowns was excellent! Andrew Robinson as the cuckolded Larry was the best known and would later play the choice role of the tailor-cum-spymaster Garak on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". Uncle Frank was played lustily by Sean Chapman in flashback and menacingly by Oliver Smith in the skinless present. Clare Higgins' descent into absolute depravity is thrilling to watch as she wrestles with any moral qualms less and less. Finally, Ashley Laurence is tremendously underrated among Scream Queens as her virtuous ingenue Kirsty willingly consigns Uncle Frank's soul to eternal torment when the Cenobites come calling for her. Doug Bradley's role as Pinhead is small but his character design leaves an indelible impression becoming the emblem for the franchise. When he says, "We'll tear your soul apart!", it gives me chills. In a later entry, he has a great line: "Your suffering will be legendary even in Hell!"
The film is about gradations of evil running the gamut from selfish self-preservation to evil personified. There is Kirsty's desperate exchange of Frank for herself, Clare's willing murders born of twisted lust, Frank's monstrous predations and fratricide, the Cenobites' revelry in exploring the further regions of experience and ol' Beelzebub himself monitoring the whole affair as a homeless vagrant only to reveal himself at the very end.
The practical effects are extraordinary ranking with Rob Bottin's work on "The Thing" and Rick Baker's work on "An American Werewolf in London". Watching Frank reconstitute from protoplasm and brainstem is an Oscar-worthy set piece.
The first three sequels are okay but they take a nose-dive after that. The fourth film, "Bloodline", is the most interesting because it shows the origin of the puzzle box in the 18th-century, tells a story in the present and continues with a descendant of the puzzle maker in the 22nd-century! Hulu recently released a reboot with a female Pinhead!

Great video reaction. The writer and director of this movie Clive Barker, he's so talented. Here is a romantic quote from one of his other stories.
Did I say that she was beautiful? I was wrong. Beauty is too tame a notion; it evokes only faces in magazines. A lovely eloquence, a calming symmetry; none of that describes this woman’s face. So perhaps I should assume I cannot do it justice with words. Suffice it to say that it would break your heart to see her; and it would mend what was broken in the same moment; and you would be twice what you’d been before.
    Clive Barker
    ❤️😎

The 80s was the era for slasher movies ever since Halloween (1978) popularized the genre that Black Christmas (1974) codified. But in 1987, Clive Barker brought his own novella to life with Hellraiser and brought true gothic horror back to the forefront, but set in modern day with an underlying Lovecraftian influence. It's a story of lust, hedonism and moral decay set in a universe of unknowable forces beyond human understanding.
Or as one woman reportedly said in a meeting concerning the film's title, "What a Woman Will Do for a Good Fuck." XD

I've seen this before but it was always the extreme supernatural horror of the Cenobites that held my attention. I didn't think much about Julia or her love triangle (if that's the word) with the two brothers. But I see now that their human depravity is as much a gateway for the Cenobites, as the box itself. (I haven't thought about it, but it might bear comparison with Twin Peaks.)
Given your interpretation of this movie, I agree you should watch the second one. It gets surreal in places, and it's still disgusting, but it adds an interesting extra dimension to the story.

Hi Dasha. Can't believe you watched Hellraiser!! That's awesome. Such a cool old horror. Always loved this movie. But the second movie is my favorite, watched that one so many times. Hope you watch more old horrors. Take care.

I remember watching this as a teenager in the late 80's, the part that made me feel the most uncomfortable was that doorway and nail that ripped the skin on the back of his hand. That's because out of all the gore in the movie it was the most likely real world injury, so was the hardest to see....I get a feeling from Dasha's reaction, she felt that way too.

Casual horror movie fan here. This movie is known for its special effects. It's not as insane as The Thing (for the time), but they are very innovative. Hellraiser 2 and 3 are good sequels as well (anything after that is terrible unfortunately). My favorite is 2.
The Conjuring is a good horror movie, especially for modern horror, which mostly tends to be so predictable and very reliant on fake looking CG. That said, I think that The Descent is in the running for the scariest horror movie of all time, or perhaps the best horror movie of all time. It all depends on what scares you, of course, but this movie is incredibly underrated and incredibly scary. If you decide to watch it, make sure that you watch the UK/original version, not the US version. Cheers!

Body horror is generally more focused on revolting transformations to the body, often to the main character directly.

"But somehow Julia turned out to be the biggest monster."
That was the original idea. Clive Barker wanted Julia to be The Big Bad of the series; he had no idea The Cenobites would become immediate icons. Clare Higgins was a stage actor who didn't want to be an '80s boogeyman so the series changed their focus to The Cenobites.
HELLRAISER 1 & 2 are the best. Part 2 has most of the worldbuilding/lore in it. HELLRAISER 3 and 4 (Producer's cut) are okay, but everything after that is pure crap. Most of them didn't even start out as HELLRAISER screenplays, they were turned into them.

This would've been one of the most awesome horror movie ever if they had the effects budget of the Hellbound sequel. Watch the sequel, but be aware that the rest of the franchise becomes sadly ridiculous and silly past the first sequel.
The next level of horror films is the 2008 French version of "Martyrs." Watch at your own risk.

Hey Dasha, here's a little trick to help with horror films. When I was little I loved to watch scary movies but I had a huge imagination so I couldn't fall asleep. If you mute the sound when the music ramps up and you think something scary is about to happen it makes it way easier to watch. Sounds like nonsense but mute any scary film and they're much more tolerable. It's crazy how much the audio affects us as much or more than the visual. Anyway, these films are kind of lower quality (especially the earlier ones) but the stories are really interesting. Cheers.

Priviet Dasha. This is Clive Barker's masterpiece. This would be perfect for Halloween as well. Nice reaction. Don't mess with Pinhead and his Cenobites. I suggest the sequel. This is a nice cult classic. Speaking of a cube, I suggest Cube (1997) and Scanners (1981).

It's a shame. Clive Barker's writing is SOOOOO imaginative, it begs to be made into a movie. But the 80s just did not have the technology to match the scope of that writing. Nightbreed really suffered despite the incredible make up effects. We need these remade with someone like Guilermo del Toro making projects like Weaveworld and Imajica.

Hello.First let me say that it would have been cool if,in the thumbnail you combined your face with the face of the Cenobite with the pins in his face, who we fans callPinhead even though Clive Barker, the author(more about him in a few seconds) prefers the term Hellpriest, which is the name used in the remake.I’m very happy you got around to watching this( it to mention getting through it) because horror is one of my favorite genres and this is one of my very favorite horror movies. Most of the sequels are forgettable and irrelavent,so no need to worry about them.I mentioned that I was going to bring up Clive Barker again, and the reason is I don’t know if you like reading horror but if you do I wanted to recommend his six books of short stories called Books of Blood. They are weird, different, creative, and changed horror.Also.it’s interesting that you said )ilia was the real monster, because she was in fact meant to be the main villian of the franchise, but the actress,Claire Higgins, did not want to do any more after the second one,so Pinhead became the main villian.
