My grandmother was a 1950's housewife, and still follows the same routine today and she is 90+years old. My siblings and I used to visit our grandparents for the summer when we were little. I remember my grandmother doing exercises everyday. She would get her ironing board and had a basket full of clothes that she would iron while watching Soap Operas. She made every meal from scratch. It took her 2 days to make bread/rolls because the yeast had to rise several times. She had a huge garden which she had us help her with. She canned food for the winter months. She managed to keep a very tidy house even with us 4 grandkids there. I think that was partly because we helped with the chores and we weren't allowed to play inside. We played outside all day unless we were doing chores. She sewed most of our clothing and handmade most of the home decor like drapes, tablecloths, napkins. She even made the stuffed animals and dolls we played with. My sister still has her Raggedy Ann doll she made. On Sundays she would get up early and put dinner in the oven. We would go to church and after church she would have church friends over and dinner was ready to come out the oven. She made it all look so effortless. She seemed to love catering to my grandpa. My grandpa really appreciated her. She still does her exercises, stretching and walking every single day. She is in better shape than me at 92 years old.

And your grandmother was so smart, had such skills and know how. She'd last much longer in the wild than I would. I cook from scratch with my fancy cooking gadgets that our grandmothers didn't have. And I'm pretty sure that though I clean, they were cleaner. Our grandmas rock!

Ok my mom was a 1950’s housewife and she definitely didn’t do all that. We had oatmeal during the week. She did put on makeup in the morning but wore comfortable clothes during the day. She would change clothes to go out or for the evening before my dad got home. I never saw her make homemade bread. We always set the table for meals but kids helped with that and dishes. She did cook dinner from scratch every night. She only cleaned house (other than dishes) on Saturday and kids helped. I think this is an idealized version most people didn’t do, just like most people don’t live perfect Instagram lives today. Fun experiment!!! To watch, anyway😉

@@sheilaenglish3293 You're right. This was based on advertising. I think if aliens visited the US during the 1950's, they would think that women were the rulers & their husbands were the slaves. The men got up early & worked all day, & on weekends worked on home & car repairs & yard work....then back to work Monday morning. And just like today, many of them did not have suit-type jobs; they did hard manual labor.
Meanwhile the women kept the house tidy & cooked meals (which did not take all day every day lol)....but they knew all their neighbors & the women hung out together & went shopping together---they had time to do that! Most importantly, the women had the time to parent their own children. To be mothers. That alone was priceless.
Now we are slaves to the corporations just like the men, and our children are parented by paid services & teachers who may have completely different morals, values, & beliefs than we do. No one knows their neighbors, & women are taking prescription psych meds, place zero value on their virtue, & are committing suicide in scary numbers. Almost everyone you meet comes from a broken home & has parent issues. Do we really have it better now?
      Makes you wonder.

But her daytime at home dresses were much simpler and more comfortable too. She was also a farmer's wife and had to cook large lunches for my Grandfather's hired hands. I know that since I have been working from home, wearing either slippers, gym shoes or just socks, it is going to be hard to get into any kind of heels. (Wondering if my feet will spread as a result?) But I know that they did not wear those 4-5-6 inch heels back then. It was also the time of the Mary Jane shoes so they had more support. The heels were chunkier too. And I think they may have worn flats towards the end of the 50s. But if you are used to wearing shoes with a heel all day long, it also doesn't fatigue you as much, because your body is used to it.

I recently read letters my folks wrote to each other in the 50's when my dad worked out of town. Man, do I have the highest respect for them for what they did! It was HARD. On top of that, for my mom, she was a transplant to Calif. from back east (my dad, too), so she had no family around to help. The neighbor ladies became her lifeline for day to day friendship/fellowship. Highest respect! Mom and dad are in heaven now but I look forward to telling them "thank you!" with all my heart!

She laughed and said she and her sisters and friends wore flats in the house during the day. They also wore house dresses with snaps. When the husbands came home they did freshen up, put on a pretty dress and sometimes, but not always, heels. She said heels were for going out shopping, to dinner parties, or church. Normally the kids, not the mother, did the dishes after dinner. They took turns with the washing and drying on different days. Saturday was usually the big cleaning day and everyone in the house helped. The fathers did yard work also. Children lived in the house so we're expected to help with chores. It was part of living in a family and of growing up. The girls helped with cooking and baking too. It was not all on the mother's shoulders. This was such a fun video . It didn't look much like my household growing up in the 1950s. Every chore took an extraordinary amount of time and effort but, our mothers grew up during the Great Depression, so hard work was part of their lives. Efficiency, organization, and ingenuity enabled women to do what needed to be done with a little time to spare. Amazing!

There is a tv series called Back in Time for Dinner that takes a family through the decades. They live each decade for a week in their home with a redone kitchen, dining and living room in the style of the decade with appropriate appliances and everything, they wear clothes of the decade and eat the foods of the time. There are British and Canadian versions of the show. The Canadian version which went from the 40s to 2000 was disappointing in some regards as the producers appeared not to have talked to anyone who lived at those times and relied on advertising. They served the strangest things in the 70s that were featured in product ads but weren’t really a part of a normal home diet, so it gave a skewed version of the times but it is interesting to see how food was prepared through the decades and how it was the sole province of the woman up until very recently. You can find some of the shows on CBC Gem and clips on RUclips.

I usually love these and find them really motivating. Not only did she not actually follow the list very well, but she added some random stuff… like no where on any of the suggested lists was make a dessert for every meal. Honestly, with the cake and the cookies, she made enough dessert to easily last her family at least a week if not two! You also “freshen up” for yourself, not for your husband, so you feel good and ready to enjoy your family time. She didn’t take the recommended breaks. No schedule recommends you wear heels. Most housewives wore house shoes that were very comfortable and wore short heels when they went out. Speaking as a modern personal trainer, The workouts were designed more to keep you flexible and your joints limber because housework was more strenuous than than it is with all the conveniences of today. Also, the set up a tray for the husband thing, was more of a courtesy and often included cocktail ingredients so that he could make his wife a drink 😉 Full breakfasts were only made on the weekends because they would have been time and cost prohibitive, so it was either hot or cold cereal. Few families baked homemade bread by the 50’s. Sliced, store bought bread was commonplace. Rural wives would however make fresh biscuits in the morning. I’ve learned a lot from this short era of American history, and I’m sorry she didn’t have a more enjoyable time with the experience. The inspiration video she mentioned is great though! That’s how I found this one.

Hi. I was born in 1952, and my sister in 1954. A brother in 1958, so he was too young to really experience life then, and my other 3 brothers were born in the 60's. But I digress. Yes, no dishwashers in the 50's. Children were assigned to that chore. My sister and I had to clear the table, and then she washed (while standing on a step stool so she could reach the sink) and I dried and put away. We also had to set the table before the meal, and help bring the food to the table (family style, so that meant serving bowls and platters to wash afterwards, too). Instant Pot didn't exist back then, but my mother had a pressure cooker she used to make chicken soup with dumplings, and a variety of other good things. We always helped my mom make the cookies and cakes, because we got to lick the spoon and the beaters from the hand mixer (not electric, it worked by turning a handle on the side). My mom did not make bread, she walked to the neighborhood corner market and bought white Sunbeam bread or Wonder bread. When she made my school lunch, she cut the sandwich diagonally and removed the crusts because I was a fussy child and wouldn't eat them. (I think she used to eat them herself so they didn't go to waste.)
You've brought back so many memories, but I will stop here. Thank you.

I have found inspiration from RUclipsrs like Sage Lilleyman, Rachel Maksy, and Lacy Fay. There are specialty stores where you can find more authentic reproduction dresses: Collectif, Lindy Bop, and Zapaka. ThredUP has been a great resource to find some basic pieces that I could start to build from for mix and match tops and skirts which were more budget-friendly.

On top of this list is I also homeschool (not distance learning but actual homeschool) for the past 3 years. I don't prepare the living room for my husband, he would hate it. He and I clean up the kitchen in the evening. It's really just about establishing routines. It's also how you see it. I love being able to stay home with my kids and care for my family. Ironically, I never saw my other Grandma in a skirt or dress except in pictures and the day she and my Grandpa renewed their vows for their 40th anniversary. She died at 96 so probably the last 40 years of her life the only time she wore a dress was that one day. Even at my wedding she wore an elegant pantsuit.

That was how I was brought up. Mum cooked 3 meals a day, with dessert with out evening meal, she did most of her baking in batches eg Wed and Sat so she didn’t waste the oven heat. She also would make vast quantities of preserves, jams, jellies, chutneys, relishes, soup (which she would preserve), sauces appropriate to each season. She sewed all of her clothes, mine and my brothers, she knitted our cardigans and jumpers, would not just clean the floors, but polish them. She had a big vegetable garden, flower gardens, and an orchard to provide the ingredients for all the preserves, etc. the jam for our toast with our cooked breakfast was always served in crystal, and each flavour of jam would have its own spoon (don’t you dare stick your buttery knife into the jam!). We swept the kitchen floor every day, vacuumed 1-2x per week, dusted the entire house every week........ we had chooks to be fed and eggs collected every day. AND everybody I knew did exactly the same thing, so none of them ever complained about it. It was their normal. No dishwashers or clothes dryers....

She wore peddle pushers (now called capris) and a shirt. She did make a full breakfast every morning, and a hot supper. Laundry was done with a wringer washer and hung on the line. My dad had to wear a uniform and his pants were hung on the line using “stretchers,”. A metal form that went inside the pants legs to keep them from wrinkling as much. Our floors were all hardwood, no carpet. They were swept and mopped daily, and I, at 3-4 years old, did the dusting. My older sister was in school, and we would walk up to the school each afternoon to meet her and then the 3 of us walked home.

I loved this video! You should watch some old "I Love Lucy" reruns to get the flavor of the 1950's. You and Lucy have some things in common, I think.

I feel you! Love to cute style of the 50's! I think did make a come back back when I was in highschool. Not the dresses maybe, but the cardigans and cropped slim pants were def in style and I wore it ALL THE TIME. 😂

I was a child in the 50’s in a middle class neighborhood. No high heels for cleaning, not dressed up. Yes lots of cooking but no moms in my area worked out of the home. These women worked really hard.

I love your honesty and this video made me laugh out loud! Also, I love that you put socks on later in the day. Props to the 1950s housewives. ❤❤❤

I completely agree! I was thinking if I Saw a woman dressed up like that at the grocery store I would just stare in amazement at how put together she is while shopping! She looks beautiful in that dress.

I see so much overlap with systems like "FlyLady." Your experience was maybe the idealized version, but since then we've lost abilities and now need instructions like FlyLadys "Get Dressed to Shoes."

this was so fun! My grandmothers both were amazing housekeepers and cooks and both worked outside the home. one a nurse and the other at a factory. both lost their husbands early. The retired Nurse (and mother of 5!) is 97 and still lives on her own and cooks and cleans her apartement. My mother worked in medial field and kept a spotless house. My Dad worked in the medical field taught me how to cook and clean and primiarly raised me and my sister after their divorce. I too have always worked outside the home in sales (traveled pre pandemic) and have been the "bread winner" . I get the groceries, cook and clean. My husband helps with cleaning and other HH chores from time to time. I do find it very fullfiling like the other comments to serve my family by taking care of them by making a meal and procuring the food. And I just like a clean house! My family makes me feel very appreicated. I have 1 son who also helps but both would say it defaults to Mom. I feel like a pretty typical Gen Xers, latch key kid who does is all. No wrong answers, to each their own. Do I wear my Athleta gear, no make up and my hair in a Urban Halo band most days when I am at home HELL YES! But I also love getting dressed up to see customers when I am out and about. I found my fit and I think that is what is all about. You do you, find you ladies and own it!
