once upon a time, I was really into computer NASCAR racing and with the advent of feedback steering wheels, it really does put you in the car as close as anything could. I actually used a flight sim for a year before taking my first flying lessons and it saved me thousands of real dollars in getting my pilots license - so this is a real thing that works. I'm excited to see what happens. I think Chicago is probably the worst place on the planet to try it out, but we'll see how it goes. If everyone goes home without being shot or robbed, it will be a good weekend. If I was the boss, I wouldn't invest a dime in that shithole city but we'll see. Hope I'm wrong. And I can say that because I'm not far from there, have travelled there for work, but for me, set the fuk'r on fire and no one would miss a damn thing. But this weekend will be historic. As a fan of F1 and Indy car, I think this is going to be a very positive thing because I'm just a half glass full type person. Grats to Junior! We're a better world to have him in our lives in this time. Wish his dad was still here, but that's life.
I agree with Dale that brining the "product" race to the heart of the city, to the front door of the fans is a great idea. Like I literally had this same discussion about track racing the other day. Why do people in the car and motorcycle community ride/drive fast on the streets? Because no one is going 2-3 hours one way out of the city to go on a track, to then pay hundreds of dollars to wait in line. That's the issue that NASCAR has with ovals, for most people getting to downtown takes 15-20 minutes. the biggest issue being parking. But in Chicago you can take the bus, subway, train, taxi, uber, rent a bike, rent a electric kick scooter, or just walk if it's close enough. None of those are options for Joliet. Joliet is anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half for most people in the city and suburbs. And because it's happening so far away no one even knows that NASCAR is in town. Comparatively when you're shutting roads down every News station in the city is telling you about the road closures downtown for weeks before even the first traffic cone gets placed.
You're right. Another big issue for me is the time it takes just to leave the parking lot. I was at a Bristol race one year and made the mistake of parking in a lot across the street from the track. After the race they were routing all traffic from our area through a back exit. We didn't move for 3 hours. At Daytona another year, I made it to the car, backed out of my space, got in line, and was stopped in that position for over an hour before the line started to move.
As a native Chicagoan...no one there wants this. It's all about $$...beware accidents...simulators!@? ..with all the issues in the city of Chicago, this reflects the Political waste the politics have become, and...and how desperate NASCAR is
I love Dale Senior an Dale jr but this race i don’t care for it never will. do more short race tracks where it began. Money has ruined almost ever sport ever.
Nascar is like Budweiser. Nascars vision is losing core fans of multi generations, for novelty races and mediocre racing. Short term gains are not worth the loss of the of the diehard fans!
But the street track was legitimately exciting. Positions were constantly changing and driver's in the front we're consistently rotating to the back of the pack as they were going for all or nothing passes. Driver's were constantly challenging for position despite it being a narrow track.
The iRacing race had a four car crash in Turn 7 that was removed by pressing the reset button. That won't happen in real life. As to Monaco, total population there is less than one tenth of the number of commuters being displaced by closing Lake Shore Drive.
I don’t know what race you were watching, what I saw Sunday night was a success. Yes it Rained, but in the end it all worked out, Even if it was shortened.

All you need is a PC and a desktop wheel/kit....simulators are great but not needed
