Man, that is a brave young man. I’m wishing for all the best for Marlin, working for Mr. Hendrick that quickly and achieving what he has already bodes well for his future. Best interview ever on DJD, right up there with the Sterling Marlin interview.
The fact your parents came around at all and you eventually made peace with your father is great! I can imagine for you and your parents that it was the hardest thing you all have been through. I wish you the best of luck man! Jr. and his brought many enjoyable moments in my childhood and as a young man. I never thought I’d see Jr. intervening but he does a damn good job! Keep em coming
Great job Dale, that was an interesting interview, one thing you can count on is the hard work ethic of the Amish people and Marlin clearly is a great example of that. I think it may be the best interview on DJD to date
Got a couple friends that left the Amish. Their stories are strikingly similar to this young man's story. To leave everything behind and step into the modern world takes a very strong will. To be shunned by friends and family and the community you grew up in is one of the reasons some stay and lead unhappy lives. Thankfully there are folks who will drop everything and show up to pick up these young folks who want to leave and give them support to get them going.
Absolutely love this story, Marlin seems so understanding of his parents considering all he's learned since leaving. I hope him and his family can live out the rest of their days together with love and growth
These stories always hurt my heart. The parents mean well but I can see how he cannot live that way and I cannot imagine saying goodbye to my family. They are my world. . I am happy his parents do contact him.
Thay leap of faith to leave behind everything you've known you're entire life behind you with no real foresight of what life is gonna look like after, that's courage. Much respect, Mr Marlin
This was a great interview It is always nice to learn to understand a culture better This is a brave young man who followed his dreams. He is a very courageous young man Ana☮️☯️
I'm in northeast indiana and work with the Amish. Great people and its still heartbreaking to see the family disown them after they try to better their life. They are great people. But I couldn't imagine turning my back on my children for any reason...
If the family DOESN'T turn their backs on them, the FAMILY faces a very, very tough situation in the community....as tough as the person who left faces from the family.
Ive seen many of Dale Jr.'s podcasts. This is by far the best Ive seen yet. Marlins decsion to leave home had to be tough. But he made the decision and stuck to his guns. I admire that greatly.
Great interview Dale! I'm from WI and have an idea from where Marlin grew up in Central Wi. The Amish are a very private people, but the hardest working and kindest folk you'll ever meet. I've had many interactions with them working in building industry.
Jr. if you ever decide a different path this is it! I'm not sure if you are prompted to ask questions, but you come across so sincere! Really enjoyed listening to this fellows struggle to find a lifestyle!
I can appreciate the Amish community's conviction, but being a parent, I could never understand not allowing my kids to see me or their mom/siblings again!
Its religious, many believe the devil will get ahold of their kids and if they keep in constant communication it will allow the devil into their lives. Thats the reason it took them so long to ask what he does or how he was doing. For most of us we believe our closest relationship is with our parents, children, and siblings. But in the Amish community God is your closest relationship. And anything that comes between or distracts you from God is evil.
Honestly it’s an abusive community. They have great intentions in their mind with great work ethics and I know many Amish and grew up around many and I even know plenty with the last name “Yoder”. My little league baseball coach in the z80s was a defector. From all the things I’ve seen and heard it’s not much different than David Koresh and the branch davidians sadly 😔

I can see the pain with leaving your family, but also see the happiness of becoming your own man. God bless and keep you. I am sure all noticed that he did not go back on his word even if it meant a mega life changing opportunity for him---That integrity and character was taught at home----I wish him the best--and I wish the Amish community the best as well--
My heart broke for both sides this whole episode. Glad his parents never passed without some communication. My parents have passed and I can't imagine just walking out on them.
Wow. Hard to grasp how the faithful Amish live and think in a modern world and continue to stay faithful to the Amish way of life. I live in Pennsylvania in York County. One job I had was a truck shop in York and I went to various truck shops selling and delivering. I had to visit a coupe of Amish truck shops in York and Lancaster counties. One in particular was a family run shop with brothers and dad as the mechanics. In warmer months, their children would run through this large garage in bare feet and they loved playing and getting dirty. The bottom of their feel looked like the floor of the shop. They would climb on things and basically play as they pleased with what seemed like no guidance. The family was friendly towards me and it was kinda fun to visit them and witness them at work in "their world" so to speak. No electricity in the shop, only diesel engines ( no spark) but many drove a van and I don't remember if they installed a diesel or just used gas engines. One shop, the owner admonished me for giving him a business calendar my employer wanted passed out to customers. He said due to the one woman in a picture (legs showing) he could not hang it up in the shop. He said he was an Amish preacher but, he kept the calendar and thanked me. ??? Oh well. In York county, you might pass by a farm and see what looks like an outhouse nest to a telephone pole near the road. It is a phone booth used by the head of the house/farm. Driving is certain parts of Lancaster county with Amish communities, be sure your windshield washer bottle is full of fluid. When it starts to rain, cars in front of you deposit a mixture of water and meadow muffins onto the windshield by the spray coming off their rear tires. Yes, it is from the horses.
Coming from the amish, and helping people to leave I understand where he's coming from. Its difficult to stay in the area. I'm happy to see you doing well.
Interesting insight into the Amish community. We live amongst them here in Northern New York and the Amish lifestyle is a bit mysterious to the “English” as we are called. I’m not always a big fan of Junior’s interviews that don’t focus on the more famous members of the nascar community but this was one of his best interviews ever. It’s really interesting to hear about how Marlin went from Amish to a NASCAR mechanic in just a few years.
I got nervous just listening to this story. Can’t imagine how it felt for him. In the end, his dad let him leave. So, maybe he deserves a tiny, tiny bit of credit. I imagine w/his background, this guy has an amazing work ethic.
Wow. This is impressive. Good for you. Great interview. Hopefully you remember what’s it’s like to live among the Amish because you (we) may need to know how soon…
Dads hurt too... I have a very old school dad. When I was about 25 he we had an argument and I didn't speak to him for 6 months. Apparently it had all bothered him so badly she regularly talked to him about it.
