- A content packed video! Another season is in the books, and NBC brings us a wild, competitive 2nd half including the NASCAR Playoffs! Hard racing, bumping and rubbin', late-race passes, and big crashes and confrontations litter the post season as the drivers battle out for the Cup! NBC experiments in the booth with radio-style announcing at the Glen and Leigh Diffey filling in for Rick Allen for a couple of races.
This was a great year for NASCAR. Those who’ve gave up really don’t know what they’re missing.
Erik N exactly. The last two years have had great racing and scarce crowds. Like watching JJ, Kahne, and Keselowski three wide at Indy with Jimmie blowing up refusing to lose actually made me smile watching it.
Leigh Diffey is so damn good as a commentator. A little over two months till we do all this again huh. Yay!

Not really he didnt do it as much this year he's a good commentator. either NASCAR fans complain about good drivers saying they cheat or they complain about commentators that are really good and say they are bad because they don't know a good commentator... Rick ant going anywhere anyway so stop complaining
racing is a lot different from boring old soccer. racing you have to be a lot more detailed than soccer. if you don't like what you hear than turn it off instead of useless complaining..

I'm a 2000s kid, and while Rick Allen was commentating in my day (at FOX, not NBC) and is good at the Peacock, we need to bring back Allen Bestwick for a trial, and if he does well, it can be permanent.

NBC needs to get new commentators. Same goes for Fox. Put Rick Allen back in the Truck commentary, bring back Bestwick and Dallenbach to NBC, and ditch Darrell Waltrip and bring back Larry McReynolds to the booth at Fox. Mike Joy, Jeff Gordon, and Steve Letarte are for the most part fine, and Dallenbach and Burton are about the same.

What´s more important in NASCAR:
Keeping your/someone else´s car alive or getting a better position at the cost of your/someone else´s car?
Well, that's the risk vs reward these drivers are calculating and deciding every corner of every lap during a race. If you damage your car to gain a position, it is useless because you'll be slower whether it's a tire rub or areo body damage, so that's not worth it. You also don't wanna piss off competitors to gain positions - although it's not technically against the rules to run someone over for a spot, it's also not for them to pay you back the next lap or next race. You have to earn respect on the track yet still know when to attack, especially in the closing laps of the race. One of the things that makes NASCAR such a unique motorsport is, since the racecars are full body stock cars, contact, rubbing, blocking are not discouraged under green flag racing by the rulebook. Obviously, you have to have common sense and not be totally reckless, but it's very easy to ruin someone else's day while making it look like a racing incident (Like the 24's payback on the 11). Hope that answers your question!

F1 fan here, be kind...... what are the flaps for on the top and the rear of the cars? Are they designed to automatically pop up when the cars get spun so they act as air brakes? Or are they there to act in some other way?
Exactly as you assumed! The cars generate downforce moving forward at high speed, and lift when spun around quickly. The flaps are to limit aero blowover crashes that can take the car into a nasty barrel roll or even in the catchfencing near the grandstands! Search "NASCAR Blowovers" for examples, plenty of them even with the roof flaps!
Leuel48Fan as you say I assumed it was but my knowledge of NASCAR is limited I was intrigued. There’s zero runoff compared to our softie F1 drivers (apart from at obvious tracks like Monaco and they aren’t doing anywhere near NASCAR speeds there) and I’d not thought about them lifting off in the event of a spin.
I’ll go looking now, I am sure they’ll be suitably scary, proximity of fans and cars ensures for some adrenaline inducing moments for drivers and fans alike.
Getting that close to cars at that speed is intoxicating, we’ve got Rockingham here (that I’ve both spectated and pit crewed at) but I think a trip to your side of the Atlantic would be a better idea 😄 time to book flights and tickets 😄

Of course! No problem. I wouldn't call the F1 guys 'softies' tho haha. Our NASCAR drivers get a full body of 3500lb stock car made of thick steel frame tubing. Together with the SAFER barriers (soft walls), multi-point restraints and the HANS device, NASCAR is a very safe motorsport. Crashes here are not as feared as other motorsports and are even part of the show and the entertainment value, because of such safety measures! The biggest draw to NASCAR over F1, is although the tracks are relatively simpler, the competition is extremely tougher. The cars are way closer to equal in speed and dealing with traffic and contact (close proximity high-speed racing) is an integral part of stock car racing!
If you ever get a chance, attend a Daytona or Talladega race (superspeedways) and Bristol or Martinsville (short tracks). Different types of racing, both extremely competitive and enjoyable to watch! Feel free to check out NASCAR's RUclips channel also, they have been posting full races officially for the past few seasons!
It was after 1993 when Rusty Wallace flipped at Talladega, then in 94' NACAR began installing roof flaps to keep the car from catching air and flipping over, and it also keeps the car on all fours when they go airborne, except at Daytona in 2015 (the July race) when Austin Dillon flew into the fence and destroyed the car, with the flaps sadly... In recent years, we've seen some scary accidents with the roof flaps like Newman's flip in 09, or Carl Edwards' flip in that same race in April.
