2005 Mazdaspeed Miata Review: Did Boost Ruin the Miata?

- As the only Miata with a factory installed turbocharger and a highly limited production run, the Mazdaspeed Miata is a special vehicle for sure. In this review, I'm aiming to resolve the concerns surrounding if the turbocharger makes this Miata any less of a...well, a Miata. #mazdaspeed #miata #carreview
A: Yes, they ruined the miata... *from the factory.* MSMs *need* an intake upgrade and with boost control and maybe a megasquirt and new injectors, they can really fly. Just the Flyin Miata intake and exhaust package makes close to how they *should* have been from the factory. I love mine. But Mazdaspeed really goofed on the way they programmed the ECU and tuned the turbo. Did you know that the ECU withholds fuel at full throttle until 4500 rpms to keep the turbo from spooling? The turbo should be spooled up long before then, but Mazdaspeed put a *fake* turbo lag. You can bypass it simply by unplugging your TPS. My theory is Mazda corporate is so poo-poo about non NA miatas, that they told Mazdaspeed to sabotage it by making it hectic to drive. But, if you unplug your TPS, you'll start getting boost just before 3000 RPM and it comes on really smooth; it doesn't jerk like it does stock.
Isaac Cady solid info right there. I certainly know this wasn’t (and certainly won’t be the last time) the first time an automaker restricted the performance of a “performance” model. Out of the box it’s still a really fun car...but much was left on the table.
So so right. The turbo didn't ruin the Miata; Mazda just ruined the turbo Miata. I recently did the Flyin' Miata Little Enchilada pack. Completely altered the driving experience. The way the WOOOSH PFFFT scares jaywalkers and other vermin is priceless!
Excellent review...you should review more cars
john doe thank you sir! I totally agree.
An excellent review of MSM!
jfff sddsfds thank you very much.
Hell ya man great review
Nader Saleh thank you!
In Japan Mazda offered many (more than 10) special editions with turbos! in the UK in 90 and 91 there was (Factory approved and warranty) the BBR turbo variant. If you are talking USA only then you are correct.
Thomas Greenall that is correct and yes I was speaking only stateside. We have a history of missing out on special edition imports.
Sweet review! Keep it up!
MockALove thank you very much!
Thank you so much...will do.
Welcome to the MSM club!!! 😎👍
ERICK4431 I should have joined this club earlier...what a machine!
With an extra set of plates on the boot in case you need to be incognito for whatever
Why was the turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX-5’s redline lower than that of the normal MX-5’s - 6,500rpm for the Mazdaspeed version compared to 7,000rpm for the normal MX-5?
Josh Bacon I believe because they were playing it safe due to using a pretty much stock 1.8 liter BP engine. 7k redline would have helped performance so much.
@@autoobsessivegarage My understanding is that there wasn't any more power to be had above 6500rpms with the way it was set up. More airflow and/or bigger injectors would be necessary, and Mazda didn't want this vehicle competing with the RX-8.
Kentageon that all seems very true.
Stock connecting rods
looking to grab a mazdaspeed miata after crashing my nc, hope its a great upgrade because i love having a turbo from factory :D
It’s a blast for sure. I’m sure you’ll dig it.
Boost never ruins miatas 17in wheels do
Haha agreed. I believe 15” to really look the best on the NA and NB.
Spot on! The ride is brittle as granite with the Bilsteins and 17s. After 10 years stock, I put on Tein coilovers, 16" wheels and tires. MUCH more compliant ride, and sticks like glue. A must do mod!
I Wana see a race between this and the nd2 miata
Should be close but I’d give a slight edge to the ND2 for better gearing and that more usable rev range. Would be an interesting race through and a track battle would be fantastic as well.
How tall are you?
I’m 6’ tall and sit even higher.
is that norcal?
Yes sir.
