Mark doesn't consider himself a singer. He is a songwriter, a composer, a story teller, and a guitarist extraordinaire. His guitar is his "voice" and he uses it so beautifully. The band never really had a vocalist and they never needed one. It was all about the music.
That being said, I love his voice.
Only goes to show you that music can come in many forms ... you don't have to be Pavarotti to get to what makes music music😊
If someone else sang Mark's songs it just wouldn't sound right. He's a story teller/narrator with that Dylanesque type of voice back then. But as the years went by he sounded more like himself. If you check out the song Lights Of Taormina from his solo album Tracker from 2015, his voice has changed so much but at the same time you still know it's him. I also recommend Brothers In Arms from Dire Straits Live "On The Night" 1993. Best performance ever. Just found your channel. Great stuff, Cheers from Australia. 👍🎸🎸🎸
Yeah like Bob Dylan
Well said. Be different if they had a great vocalist. But I justice this band. So unique, so awesome live. Oh and that guitar work!
Well put, if the music is outstanding, the voice is secondary... and sometimes it's nice to have a raw voice instead of a virtuoso. That's one of the cool things about music, it comes in so many varieties and flavors. His voice might be an acquired taste, but when his guitar playing and other instruments are so exceptionally good, you might forgive the lesser quality vocals... and you might even come to like them, because they just fit the music so well. I don't think this song would be improved by a virtuoso vocalist, it sounds perfectly fine just the way it is.
There are other examples of this, Johnny Winter comes to mind. Especially if you happen to be a fan of top notch blues rock guitar, you'll overlook Johnny's raw voice, and it might even sink in eventually that it just wouldn't be the same music with a "better" vocalist taking his place. And I can listen to Frank Zappa all day and not care one whit that Frank's vocals are barely passable... the music is so fantastic and amazing and unique that I wouldn't dare change any part of it.
This is IMO one of the best live concerts of all time. Certainly top 5. Telegraph Road is unbelievable too. Knopfler is unreal as a guitarist, and a terrific songwriter. Alchemy really stands apart.
The drummer is the fantastic Terry Williams from Wales and the Dave Edmunds Band/ Rockpile groups. And yes, saw them live (opening act: SRV & Double Trouble). Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.
I'm jealous
What you've just witnessed is all Mark Knopflers genius.
The words, music, arrangement, singing and playing his guitar as only he can, is all his own work.
TELEGRAPH ROAD please from this same concert ALCHEMY LIVE.
He writes mainly about his own experiences, this was about when he went in out of the rain and there was a group playing called Sultans of Swing.
You won't be disappointed ❤
The vocals aren't meant to drive you crazy, but the brilliance of the band is unquestionable..the singer guitarist is brilliant
The guitarist is like no other for sure 🔥🔥🔥 great band
Here's a name to remember MARK Knopfler!
Yep, vocals are just a framework upon which all the pyrotechnics burn. It's meant to showcase instrumental fireworks...and boy does it. The lyrics are about all those bands that are slugging it out in the bars and nightclubs every night because that is what they love to do play what the want for their own pleasure. the point
Without Mark's wonderful unique voice and swag this amazing song would not be absolute fire.
PERFECTION 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Dire Straits was an incredible band
Agreed, guitars were insane 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Mark is always an amazing band, himself
Anything from the Alchemy concert is 🔥 🔥.
Subscribed.
He just spoke to the crowd with his guitar! absolute magic!
Yes it was beautiful
Forget the vocals, you just experienced one of the best guitar players of all time. But yes he also does the vocals for the band. Somebody has to do it, right? 😄
"Brothers in arms" should be next. You will see how he can make a guitar cry. This guy is in a league of his own.
lol guitar insane 🔥, vocals will do lol. I checked out brothers in arms it was really good 🚀💛
Love your reactions. Telegraph Road from the same concert is just as amazing. Their 1993 live performance of Private Investigations is out of this world. It was a number 2 hit in the UK (when you hear it you’ll know just how strange that is!) so it’s not a “deep cut”. The performance is just out of this world. It shows a different side to the band, and they do have a few!
Mark Knopfler isn’t a standard rock vocalist. He shares more in common with someone like Bob Dylan. Almost speaking the lyrics. On Private Investigations he actually does speak the lyrics. But his delivery always seems to suit the storytelling side of the songs. But there’s no denying his guitar playing is out of this world. He uses the finger picking style and doesn’t use a plectrum. At times this makes his guitar almost sound like a banjo. But the speed of his finger work is amazing.
This album (Alchemy) captured them in between albums 4 and 5 (Love Over Gold, and Brothers In Arms). Brothers In Arms catapulted them from playing in front of a few thousand fans to 10s of thousands. It was one of those albums everyone seemed to have, or certainly knew someone who had it. It is full of songs that are much more mellow and less expansive than tracks like this but it was their commercial peak. So much so they only released one more album before disbanding. Oh and the drummer is Terry Williams. He joined the band not long before this tour, and word is his dad was in the audience for the first time at this gig, so he had a little extra energy. It shows!
Telegraph road is their Gem
Telegraph road is their Gem
Telegraph road is their Gem
I was at this gig, I was 18 and 40 years later, can you believe it? Its still up there with the best.
The drummer was Terry Williams, the best live drumming you'll probably see and the best I've ever seen, better than the likes of Phil Collins and Chester Thompson.
Tunnel of Love at this gig was great too, but you have to react to the Alchemy version of Telegraph Road, it was the encore and epic and amazing and yes, Terry was still giving those skins a good hiding!
As an Dire Straits fan for 45 years, Telegraph road at same tour(Alcemy)is in my opinion Straits on its best
Genius. Pure genius. The drummer also needs to be in a hall of fame for drummers!!
The drummer almost steals the show on this song, almost.
He killed it 🚀
Marc knopler is known for being in my opinion maybe best 3 guitarist ever and a great song writer and a phenomenal storyteller on stage
Thanks for the reactions! We appreciate all your time and effort.
I saw them in Austin on this same tour. Best show I ever saw. Bar none.
Great guitar work,,and don't forget the drummer
I watch every reaction to this that comes along to make sure the reactor loves it like it deserves. You are worthy!
Oh so do I! However, I did once have the misfortune to see what I think is the only adverse reaction out there, and it was truly horrible. I don't remember the guy's name but he basically called it a snore fest and pretended to fall asleep, saying it was too repetitive. Traumatised me for weeks. Fortunately, everyone else loves it like they should, so I have recovered now!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
Nice to see you enjoying one of the GOATs.
Yessir, Man mark and the group was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This live performance isn't about the vocals.. It's all about the guitar, keyboards and drum skills....They have their own words if you listen.
He doesn't need vocals his guitar sings for him.
YES EPIC GUITAR;;;CRAZY DRUMS...you wish that song never stops...you could appreciate Romeo and Julliette....Telegraph road...Tunnel of love....Private investigations.....you will surely never forget how Mark Knopfler can tell us beautiful stories by just playing his guitar
Love Dire Straits! My favorite from them is "Romeo and Juliet". It's a take on the Shakespeare classic with a wink to the West Side Story adaptation.
His fingers are smoking!!
OH drummer is Terry Williams.
the vocals fit the song. its a story.
Brothers In Arms Live Dire Straits " On The Night" 1993 is my favorite performance from DS. Every reactor I've seen said it had a huge impact on them. Well worth checking out. Love your channel. Cheers all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸👍
You want vocals the Righteous Brothers..
The guitar of Mark Knopfler considered to be one of the best in history.
Mark Knopfler couldn’t sing. But no one could sing a Dire Straits song like Mark Knopfler.
lol 😅 I totally get it
Knopfler is top 5 guitarists of all time, easy.
no 2 behind David Gilmour i would say.......
Mark really knew how to make that strat sing, just awesome!! god music was so so good when i was young so many great bands, sorry to say that todays music is just shite!!!
Dire straits is known for being inssnely unique. Fantastic live and sooooii many great songs. Money for nothing probably the mist notorious. But lets be honest. The band leader is one of the greatest guitarists of our time. Still think telegraph road is their greatest compisition. Kudos to the band. This concert is epic. The aufience knewvit. The energy and synergy is freaking ridiculous.
❤😊
too bad you couldn't get the duck to waddle around and quack during the entire performance
Vocals not impressing you one word: Rap do they impress you?
The thing is, their vocals are just like a real person's song would be in the frame of life. Their instrumentals are fantastic, but I'm not sure if they would be so enjoyable if the vocals were more perfect and so less like every person's vocals.
