Hey thanks for showing off your 7.3 I just got a 87 6.9 F250 and its my first diesel so trying to learn all I can about these IDIs

My 6.9L IDI threw a rod in the exact same spot but on the driver side of the engine haha, I still drove it home like that. Somehow if I threw a battery in it right now, it’d still start just fine. Toughest engine Ive ever had.

Question I have a 93 with the same 7.3 idi block and on start it blows white going up hills it losses power and blows black and also after running for a while won't start until cold and ideas I have a idea of the cause but would like outside opinion's

Sounds like your may have an injector that is not closing all the way. The white smoke is from unburned diesel. If one injector is hotter than the rest that is the one with a problem.
If the truck is hot and won’t start the injection pump is wore out and needs to be rebuilt. Next time it won’t start pour cold water on the injection pump and see if it starts up!

My question for you is this, i have a 1990 f250 non turbo, runs good but i need some boost for towing. I’m thinking 8-10psi so which turbo would you recommend that spools quickly but isn’t going to blow my truck up? I’ve had a few people tell me hx35 would work but spools too high. I can turn up fuel to compensate for turbo. My truck has an egt gauge already and it’s a zf5

The factory turbo option for 93-94 was made by ATS, unfortunately they don’t make it anymore but you can buy a used one for $600-1,500 used depending on where you find it. Some guys in the big cities find them at pick your part! With your 7.3 being a non turbo the factory one does 5-10psi max.
Banks power, hypermax also make kits, but they’re expensive! Having a zf5 and egt gauge is a great start.

It’s a shame the motor threw a rod, my idi has 210k on it & seems to run well no blow by as of now & plan to keep it that way as much as possible. Yeah I love these things, they’re dogs, but that’s why they last so long, as long as you stay on top of the adatives.
It’s sad cuz these things along with the 7.3 HEUI really get a bad rap. I’ve had both Powerstroke & HEUI 7.3s & the idi is better for fixing, but the Powerstroke is better for power, & a loyal work horse if you have the $ for all the HEUI components.
I sold my 95 & got a 93 idi cuz I didn’t want to mess with the HEUI stuff since it had over 376K on it & there’s no knowing how many are truly on it cuz of these odometers.

Lol, lol, ya right no way that engine has 160k miles. The motor looks beat.
Look at it. I would say 160k 3 times over!! Lol
