- Jim shares the three reasons why you have water at the bottom of your dishwasher, either after a wash or at any time. He shares an easy way to identify the cause of your dishwasher not draining and how to fix it yourself.
Save yourself some money with these plumbing tips from Jim.
Why is there water left in the bottom of my dishwasher? Here are the reasons why from the Grumpy Plumber:
1. dishwasher hose is installed at the bottom of your cabinet, causing sink water to fill your dishwasher
2. an air gap (not recommended) valve is attached to your sink, from the dishwasher hose, and is causing problems
3. a check valve is installed on your dishwasher hose and is stuck open
The simple fix is in the video.

No doubt
Or him doing it FOR YOU even better
Wait why are u even hear

He does on another video.
Use y’all’s imagination.
Thank you for this discussion. Remember a picture is worth 1,000 words. Editing in a picture of an air gap and a check valve would increase the value of this video.
watch this one, we mention it in the description and the comments. Thanks for watching: ruclips.net/video/Rxf3dCbvKKY/видео.html
Ya this video didnt help at all since they didnt show anything of what they were talking about.
I appreciate you for starting this channel and sharing this knowledge with the community. I lost my dad in my 20s and having a channel like this to go to in my 30s makes all the difference. Thank you for sharing your dad with us all! ❤
I love that you’re doing these “fix it yourself” videos. I’ve been a plumber for 15 years and did service plumbing for about 3 years. I always told customers to look the problem up on the internet or RUclips. So many fixes are fairly simple. Hopefully this will help people and keep them from calling the Corp. commission plumbing companies.
Cash, appreciate your kind words.
This guy is my kind of construction worker. Being in the electrical field for over 20 years, you appreciate the “Don’t like it, ask your barber” recommendations. He’s gold.
my favorite bit of advice was to “ask your barber” HA!!! so good! Thanks Grumpy Plumber I love this channel!
Love your dad advice and your questions are right on!!
Can you please thank your dad for such a simple solution to an annoying problem.
My dishwasher waste runs through the food disposal unit and the hose runs from there straight down towards the dishwasher. As there is slack in the hose I am going to raise it so the water from the basin can't flow uphill.
Your dads advice is simply invaluable.
Cheers!
This was better for me than the other you tube videos by other people. Very straight forward and helped me fix my issue. Thanks grumpy plumber!
thank you !!!!!you are the greatest plumber on the internet>> says nam vet RL Heath
Great video! I fixed my "Dishwasher not draining" problem. When I popped off the cap for the Air Gap Valve, there was debris in there which consisted of egg shell, hair, garlic skin and a staple. I removed the debris, now the dishwasher is draining properly. Thank you for sharing your experience!
well done! happy to help
I just wanted to stop by and say thanks. Within 2 minutes of watching this video I was able to fix my Samsung dishwasher that wasn’t draining. 👍
You’re dad is amazing. Props to him.
He didn't even know it's called an inverted loop.
My generation... Didn't even need to draw it... Perfectly clear and understandable. Definitely a subscriber.
Thanks for the help. Electrician trying to do plumbing at home.
My husband is not here at the moment... but will let him watch your video. Very informative. Thank you!
Very much appreciated to both of you.
Thanks.
Thanks for sharing I’m having this problem with my dishwasher..your dad knows his stuff!! thank you Sir.
I just fixed me dishwasher not draining with this technique. I kinda can’t believe this worked! I simply raised the tube that goes from the washer to the sink. The tube makes a little hill. It is working perfectly now! Thx!
THANK YOU! i didn't think of the loop trick. all other vids are about cleaning/unclogging, this guy gave some gems of advice.
I love these guys. Great advise and love that hair. Thanks much.
Sounds like you have a great father. You're truly blessed.
Didn’t think I’d see the Maui guy here! Pleasantly surprised. Really helpful with troubleshooting

Lol I graduated from a trade school in the field of plumbing and omg!!!!!!!! You’re dad reminds me of the dear MR Conway!😢 must be a old master plumber thing.....thank you for the memory!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for the tips on how to fix the water not draining out of my dishwasher this has saved me some money. This issue was a clogged dishwasher hose that drains water into the garbage disposal. Thank you once again!!!
Thank you Grumpy Plumber and Son!
Thank you Jim literally just fixed mine and my moms dishwasher 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Awesome info! Your Dad is the man!
Thanks! I will check all the things you said! Blessings!
Sounds like this drainage issue can be corrected by running the hose which is coming in under the sink from the bottom to move the hose to the top of the sink and put a loop in the hose. Hope I’m hearing you right. I’ll give it a try. Thanks Pat Connell Canton MI
Great video! And great dad-son channel. 💥 Thank you!
Quick resolution to my problem! Thanks!
Thank you. It was exactly what i was looking for. Subscribed.
Thanks for the video. I was wonder what the hell was going on. Now, how do you get and sanitize the dishwasher after all that stagnant water has been in there? And if you don’t use it a lot, should you periodically just cycle it and let it run to flush it out and keep clean water moving? Thanks Again. Appreciate the video. Big Jim

Thanks so much guys😊
Thank you for your leadership.
Perfect! Thank you! I'll be putting in a hook and zip tie that drain hose up as high as I can.

So helpful thank you!
Checked and saw I didn’t have an air gap. Thanks!
Great advice , I will check that tomorrow.
I did this today and it worked like a charm thanks
My dishwasher has standing water but it’s not from the sink. Could too much drain hose be an issue?? I have quite a bit of excess hose
Thanks so much this really helped.
Thank that was helpful
I love it. This guy is like every midwestern dad. He's a do-er. gonna do the thing and do it right. See you guys at Euchre night. :)

Our GE dishwasher does not. Completely drain. We have checked the drain hose and the connection to the sink drain as well as the filter. Is it possible the pump in the dishwasher is not working properly? It sounds like it pumps for a few seconds and then cuts off (does this a couple times) and then it cuts off and all the lights start flashing in the control and we have to flip the main switch to shut off the power to the dishwasher. After doing this a number of times the dishwasher will eventually drain all the water out but it doesn’t dry the dishes. Should we try replacing the pump?
Marion Cutchen, if the dishwasher is over 5-10 years old, I would recommend replacing the dishwasher. I think it would be too costly to replace the pump. I have never replaced a pump or rebuilt a dishwasher. If you’re not doing the repairs yourself, find out the cost and then find out the cost to replace the dishwasher.
Hi Jim and Jordan, why so grumpy? God bless your dad! Only a strong, experienced, expert can handle a big job like a plumber. I totally respect that. Ppl are iffy about the profession but I have a friend who’s father is a master plumber/business owner in NYS and they have no idea how much bank they make. I did a quick q/a with him becuz I was truly curious about the field and he said gets $900 minimum for his services. For 2-5 hours of work. Depending on the extensiveness of the job. Likely more. I asked how he gets through the muck he said he put 3 kids through private school, 2 of those kids through college bought all the kids cars and bought his properties outright. So what does that tell me. He was snarky too 😂.
AnandaBliss, I started my apprenticeship at $2 an hour and that worked out well. Plumbing is a rewarding profession. I’m very comfortable in my retirement and thoroughly enjoy sharing my experience with others through this amazing technology we have today. Thanks for your comments.
my samsung dishwasher goes thru the complete cycle find but then fills with water several hours after it was dry inside. if i just run the drain function it drains fine. any ideas?> i cant find a leak.
Thanks! 👍😁
"First off, I'm not the Maytag repair man." 🤣🤣🤣
My mom had the water pump replace recently, just all of a sudden the dishwasher isn't draining & soap residue is left on the dishes. Why is this ?
I need to see it being done. I’m a visual learners as are many people.
In Christ Alone, keep watching my videos as I demonstrate how to install the hose. The main idea of the drain hose is to have it above the garbage disposal outlet about 6-8 inches.
I have tried all the suggestions. My Kenmore drains sometimes but not every time. BUT if I push the "Cancel/Drain" button it seems to always work. Does this mean it is the control panel?
Yes, time to call the Kenmore guy. Good luck!
I have the same problem , and here is how i do it. Find the dishwasher drain line under the sink ( make sure you have a container to collect some water) , the last 2 ft for the line for me is a rapper hose. I unhooked the hose from the sink drain and then use a 1/4 auger to clean the line all the way back to dishwasher if you can using the auger. For me is about 9 ft from the sink to the dishwasher. Hope that helps.
Hi Jim, I caught your video trying to find out why my dishwasher isn't draining completely all the time. My drain hose goes thru the floor into the basement into a direct sewer line. Any ideas ?
Arden Miller, install a 3/4” check valve on the drain hose where it connects to the sewer line. Or, take the drain hose and put a bend as high up as you can and then connect it back to the sewer line. You should be able to add on to the drain hose with 5/8 rubber hose. Sounds to me like the water is backing up from the main drain into the dishwasher. You can’t connect the dishwasher drain to the drain under the sink? That’s the best thing you could do.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber Thank you for the advice I will try the check valve. The drain goes into the basement I think because whoever installed the cabinets put a 15" base cabinet between the sink cabinet and the dishwasher.
What if the hose isn't long enough to make (attach) a high loop? Can you get a longer one from a supplier?
Star Gazer, you can attach any hose as long as it has a 5/8 inside diameter. Take a 1/2” piece of copper and insert it into the new hose and the dishwasher hose and clamp it on both sides. Then loop it and attach to the garbage disposal. You might want to insert another piece of copper so the hose won’t collapse when attached to garbage disposal. You can also use a 3/4” inside diameter hose.
I have a new Bosch dishwasher. Hardly use it. When looking under sink, I noticed that the drain tube that connects to the disposal was full of water. The dishwasher drain reservoir is empty and the filters are nice and clean, but for some reason the tube keeps the water in it even after it flushes. I have reset the cycle and ran it through a manual drain cycle and I can see the water flowing into the disposal but then the tube is never emptied.
Is it normal? If not what should I look for?
If the drain hose is laying on the bottom of the cabinet, you need to take the extra hose and tie it up as high above the inlet to the garbage disposal as possible. That stops the water that drains into the kitchen drain from running back into the dishwasher. If that doesn’t fix the problem, then there is a problem with the dishwasher discharge water pump.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber I understand. Last question I have is will there be water in that tube between the discharge pump and where that line goes from vertical to horizontal? Is that tube empty immediately after the discharge pump on a normal drain cycle?
If the hose is looped as I recommended then you won’t get water back into the dishwasher. The purpose in doing the hose this way is so that the water from the kitchen sink does not run back into the dishwasher.
I have tried all of your suggestions and the hoses positioned as you say but I'm still having issues with my dishwasher not draining everything I've tried everything I don't know what else to do
Elizabeth, I’m sorry I couldn’t help. Wish I could have been there to check the drains out. You may just have a faulty dishwasher.
Just bought a brand new ge profile... ran a cycle everything was fine. A few days late i go to run another load.. selected my cycle, pressed start, closed the door but wont start. The screen goes dark but all the other light work. Idk whats going on.
I recommend calling GE or the appliance store you bought it from while it is under warranty.
Ahhh I hate to say it because I don't want your dad to be grumpy at me!(lol).. but how about a chalk board or a pen and paper; something!...you need descriptive visuals for the amaturs such as myself. And because of your RUclips Ad..., your video actually borders on clickbait!... I'm sorry to say. But I did get what your wise father was explaining after I watched it twice, so I thank you both for your time and a big thumbs up.👍😉🇨🇦
David, good idea to use a chalkboard or pen and paper to demonstrate what I’m trying to say. Appreciate this advice! I’ll feel like a college professor!
Had food clogged in ours...used baking soda and vinegar in the dishwasher and it un clogged it
I'm not a plumber. I'm not an electrician. I got railroaded into installing a GE dishwasher. I've now been told that it is not draining. Thanks for this video, it just might help me fix the problem! Question, though, could it be a plugged hose?
Did you install a new garbage disposal and forgot to remove the plug in the dishwasher opening to the disposal? Or, did you put a kink in the hose on the dishwasher?
@@TheGrumpyPlumber I didn't kink the hose, that I know. I wasn't aware of any plug. I was told that it worked for a while then wouldn't drain.
Make sure the hose is high above the dishwasher discharge drain.
Thanks dad
Ive got a dishwasher thats filling our sink with water..No disposal.Diswasher connected to the sink pipe.Any ideas.
@fredfloyd4430, the dishwasher hose connects to a branch tail piece. That branch tail piece should have a baffle in it. The baffle diverts the water down the drain and not into the sink. The branch tail piece costs about $5.00. If you already have a branch tail piece, then you should have your drain cleaned. Make sure you hire a plumber, not a person who just cleans drains.
I like the Old Man #respect
My dishwasher has started only partially draining. After a load is completed, there’s standing water just covering the heating element. If I use the drain setting on the dishwasher afterward, it’ll take about 3-4 times before the water is removed. I’ve already cleaned the hose to make sure there’s no obstructions. Is it possible that the drain pump is failing, but still works enough to drain partially?
Drew, is the dishwasher drained on an air gap or does it have a check valve where it drains into the garbage disposal? The way that you can check the drain is to disconnect it from the air gap or by removing the check valve. Take the dishwasher hose and connect it to the garbage disposal. Take the middle of the hose and tie it up as high as you can underneath the sink above the garbage disposal drain. You want the water to go up the hose and back down to the garbage disposal. What might be the problem is that when water drains out of the sink through the garbage disposal, it runs down into the dishwasher. This could be a good fix if that is the problem. Air gaps and check valves are constant maintenance.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber thanks! I’ll try elevating the hose. It currently runs along the bottom of the cabinet, then goes up into the dishwasher. It does sound like the pump is working, and it is moving some water, but not completely emptying the dishwasher after a cycle.
I just want to know how the drain hose is suppose to be positioned from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal. Mine is now call connected to the near top of the garbage disposal under the sink cabinet (not the sink), then it loops downward, then upward (still under the sink), then after it goes upward it loops upward over the dividing wall to the dishwasher side, then goes downward to the bottom where it connects to the dishwasher.
G. B. It sounds like you have it installed correctly. If you still have water in the dishwasher after it’s done recycling, you have a problem with the dishwasher. If over ten years old, replace it.
Can you have too long of a drain hose going from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal ? Because I noticed the hose is on the floor & there is always water on the bottom of the GE dishwasher.
Jim, I don’t think you can go over 8 ft., but I’m not positive. The best thing to do is contact the manufacturer of the dishwasher.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber Ok, thanks.
OK. That’s great to know but I need to see a visual of what you’re doing to fix it.
What's up Mr. Jim how are you doing this is Jose Manuel Rodriguez.
Nice to see again
Jose Manuel Rodriguez, great to hear from you! Hope your plumbing business is doing well.
My business is doing great 👍
Kenmore Elete does not automatically drain at end of cycle. It does drain if I press the "Cancel/Drain" button. Have confirmed with an inspection that the drain pump is not blocked. The dishwasher is 7 years old with no problems till 3 weeks ago.
I have the same problem as Roger M, my KitchenAide DW will go through the entire cycle, cleans dishes but does not cycle the last drain. I have replaced the control board. Any sugestions?
Thanks, Valerie and Roger for the question. I recommend calling Kenmore since you troubleshot the drain connection. As a plumber, we are responsible for the water to the dishwasher and the drain out of the dishwasher.
I had a plumber come replace an old drain hose with a new hose. Now i have water in the bottom of my dishwasher after a cycle. What could cause this, if it never did this before?
Hey J what’s next, the plumber probably connected the hose to the dishwasher and needed to take the hose and tie it to the bottom of the countertop and then down into the dishwasher so it makes a trap so the water can’t run back to the dishwasher.
Mine runs to an air gap shared with a line from the disposal, so it’s up high. Is it possible there’s a clog in that disposal hose. Bypassing the air gap and routing through the top of the cabinet then just go direct to the disposal? The disposal doesn’t need the air gap?
Update. Yup, clogged up air gap. Working fine again. Wondering if I should just take that thing off and run the dw drain line directly to the disposal, looped high of course as suggested
Anyone know what the intended purpose of the air gap is?
@michaellaforte6964, the purpose of the air gap is to stop the garbage disposal water from running back into the dishwasher. By keeping the disposal line as high as you can, then coming down into the garbage disposal, will stop water from running back into the dishwasher. The newer higher end dishwashers have solved this problem and they do not want an air gap on the drain line.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber awesome! Thank you!
Just changed out disposal and dishwasher now has water. I bet I didn't run the hose same way I took it out. Thanks and I hope I didn't piss you off 😂
The new disposal had a knock out plug. 😭 I skipped step one.
