I just want to thank you so much for posting this video and sharing your knowledge. We were about to bite the bullet and buy a new dishwasher we can't afford and then we saw your video and found a shard of glass in the hose. It works perfectly now and we are washing dishes with a smile!

Thorough run down. My dishwasher's hose had clogged, like an artery that blissfully enjoyed plenty of bacon for decades. I disconnected the hose from the garbage disposal and ran an opened up coat hanger (just like you) down the hose to drag out as much rancid grease as I could (it was like lard). I had coiled up about 3 inches of one end of the coat hanger around a screwdriver, then tucked in the tip of the wire into the coil so it wouldn't snag on the ribs of the hose. After a few runs, I created a clear passage for water and ran the dishwasher on hot and heavy. After a couple of rinses, you can see light through the hose enough to where you can tell the grease had melted away and drained into the garbage disposal (a clog for a later day!). So it's all good now. Thank you for your time and the video.

This is the best video/explanation of how to fix this problem that I've seen, and I've watched a BUNCH of them. Thanks. One thing you could have added: at one point you run the pump to be sure it's working, but you don't say how you did that - how you made the pump start and stop when you wanted it to, without running a dishwashing cycle..; I know every dishwasher is different so you can't cover them all, but it would have made this video even better if you'd at least mentioned that fact. I finally discovered that the answer for my Bosch dishwasher is that you press and hold the START button for three seconds. It might say that somewhere in the Bosch manual, which is available only online (FRUSTRATING!) but I didn't find it there. I found it on another RUclips video, of course. Thank god for RUclips Do It Yourself / How to Fix It videos. How did the pioneers survive without WiFi and RUclips? :>) :>)

Thank you so much for this video. I was trying to trouble shoot my dishwasher drainage problem for at least a year. I would take it apart and clean it and was just about to either replace the pump or the unit altogether. After watching your video, I snaked the drain line. Behold. It was clogged. Works like new. Your video walked me through the steps to diagnose and fix. Thank you.

Thank you SO much for this video. I’m not sure how long it had been since our dishwasher had been cleaned/serviced/etc (probably never- we’re in a rental). It eventually stopped draining and your tip of using the hanger worked out perfectly. There ended up being several layers of calcification in the drain hose!!! Saved me a call to the landlord for them to eventually get a plumber out to my house (I didn’t want to wait or have to be here to meet them, ha!). Thank you, thank you!!!

I have a GE Monogram dishwasher. Water has been dripping out of the bottom of the front door for a long time. Replaced seals and other parts but still leaked. Have just been putting a towel under the door. Now the dishwasher won't drain at all. Inches of dirty water greeted me flowing onto the kitchen floor when I opened the door. I vacuumed all the water out and checked: the pump (working), the filter (clean) and finally got to the drain hose. That was the problem. It was not only clogged but had a droopy bend where the grease could build up and cause a blockage when hot water wasn't flowing through. I cleared the clog and elevated the drain hose to give a better drain slope. Works like a charm and guess what, the door doesn't leak anymore! I guess it drained so poorly before that water was rising in the tub this whole time. Thanks so much for this great video!!

I have a small wet/dry vac that I use to attach to the clogged drain hose to suck out the water/clog. The vacuum hose is usually larger than the drain hose so I just wrap my hand around where the two come together to create a seal. Works really well.

Awesome job! You just saved me a load of dough. Our Kenmore dish washer had stopped emptying the tub at the end of the cycle. Decided to do a bit of research to see if it could be something relatively simple. Hit upon a few RUclips vids on the subject of the pump and with that info I was able to do a bit of troubleshooting. Turns out the pump was running just fine. Then I came upon this video and decided to give it a shot. ("Nothing ventured, nothing gained"). Instead of the clothes hanger, I decided to use a wet vac as a first step. Disconnected the drain hose under the washer and sucked it out with the vac and reconnected it. Then did the drain side as well only this time I poured water in the tub. The wet vac sucked out the water, slowly at first and then quickly. Bingo! Problem solved. Attached everything back again and ran a short cycle. No water in the tub... happy camper. Thanks.

This video saved my house from a foul smell of clogged beans . I didn’t do every step but you gave me ideas to try to unclog my dish washer. Idk why the methods worked but this is what I did.
I tapped and massaged the white pipe under the sink….ran hot water in the disposal side of the sink with DAWN. Then clogged the other side of the sink. I started to plunge the disposal side to pump air through the plumbing system . Then I poured vinegar and baking soda in the drain and in the idle water inside the dishwasher with dishwasher detergent pod... I also squeezed dawn inside of the washer. Removed any floating particles and paper . I scooped some water out & turned it on hot rinse . Then I plunged the garbage disposal side of the sink while the dish washer was on rinse cycle. Shortly after I started to hear the dishwasher drain water again!! I opened the washer and it was so much nasty mold particles and beans everywhere . I cleaned it out and put it on rinse cycle again and it drained and was sparkly lean and fresh again. No more problems with clogging. Again, I don’t know which method of what I mentioned caused the drain to unclog but I’m happy PROBLEM SOLVED😊

I noticed there is no high loop on the drain hose which is responsible for disposal back flow , I also noticed he said 27 years of grease , that dishwasher is not 27 years old so that tells you he used the old drain hose from the old dishwasher which you should never do because of old food and possible mold . He also took off the high loop hose that comes on the dishwasher from the manufacturer that does prevent back flow , so this technique he’s showing wouldn’t work on a dishwasher that was installed correctly and had all the correct parts left on . This video is super helpful for people who have their dishwasher hooked up the wrong way .
Having 20 years in appliance repair my opinion is that was way too many steps to figure a clog out and in my experience that almost only happen to people who have incorrect installations on their drain hose .

Just a note, sometimes there’s a check valve that doesn’t allow water to flow backwards through the hose…so some people might try to pour water down the end of their hose but that won’t necessarily mean that it’s clogged. Good video tho

Thank You so much for this video! You probably just saved me a whole lot of time, as well as preventing me from several dangerous situations that I can now hopefully avoid! God Willing, it will be this easy fix of a clogged drain hose and not the pump, however if it’s the pump, You also saved me a lot of time checking the drain hose for a clog by showing how to tell if the pump is working or not just by removing the drain hose. Even though I believe my drain hose connects to my pump going up and down instead about the side of the pump I can use a mirror and then light to see if that is the case and I very much appreciate you and your time. God bless you and yours. God bless us all.

You’re going to love me after you read my comment/advise. I always put dishwasher powder/liquid not just inside the sealed lockable compartment, but most importantly also outside of it. Logically answer yourself this question, when is the detergent required the most, when the dishes are the dirtiest at the beginning of cycle or halfway through when they are already partially rinsed by just pure water? The answer is Off course when very dirty at the beginning. So I always split my dishwasher powder between sealed compartment and outside, effectively it gives your dishes a prewash. Most dishwasher actually have designated space for this reason, sometimes uncovered, sometimes under the the main flap slotted section. Frankly my “half “ of powder outside is alway bigger then locked “half”. It also has another benefit apart from cleaning your dishes better, it keeps your dishwasher’s drainage pipes clean, that’s because all this greasy stuff from initial wash is dissolved by the powder you’ve put outside of locked compartment and does not stick to the drainage. For this reason I have never ever used any of those heavily advertised “dishwasher cleaners”. You will notice it yourself when cleaning the filter (still have do it regularly, it’s compulsory), it won’t have this whitish gluey coat that is hard to remove. After 20 years of service I have replaced my old dishwasher with new one and guess what? The drainage pipe was so clean that I have not changed, just reconnected it to new machine.
Another tip, when you’re installing your dishwasher, connect it to hot water supply pipe instead of cold.
Don’t bother with all in one tablets or pods, always use dedicated powder/liquid and separate rinse aid. By the way rinse aid really makes the difference ton achieve spotless dry dishes.
    P.S. obviously I am a dishwasher freak.

I had this problem today. There’s a one way valve in the newer models near the pump that prevent flushing from the garbage disposal side. Also, my hose was attached to the body of the dishwasher, creating a p trap of sorts that prevented running a coat hanger down and around the curves. I ended up just buying a new hose, installing a one way valve in it, and let the old hose stay discontinued but in place. Hose clamped the connector ends and back in service. But after thinking more about it, I could have ran compressed air from the pump side and left it connected at the disposal. Once you get an opening to where it runs water a bit, run a cycle or three with a degreaser agent.

  • @jeffeverde1
    @jeffeverde1 2 года назад +15

Per manufacturer's instructions and plumbing code, the dishwasher discharge must be connected to an air gap, or a high loop, or directly into a standpipe. The way it's connected, every time the garbage disposal is run or the sink is filled and then drained, the garbage disposal is dumping waste water down the dishwasher discharge line. Dishwashers have a check valve in the discharge line, and that's why your test of pouring water down the line did not put water into the dishwasher tub (and consider yourself lucky your check valve is working, or you'd have rotten food backing into your dishwasher every time you ran the garbage disposal).
For anyone with this problem, see the This Old House video on replacing a dishwasher discharge hose (ruclips.net/video/AHwG7PsF2vQ/видео.html). A *real* plumber explains the problem, shows how to easily replace the crud-filled hose, and shows how to install a high loop to fix the root cause of the problem.

    No more white wire hangers!
Michaels craft store sells LONG brass wire of various gages.
Pick a gage that's bendable to your liking but not too much.
It's PERFECT for snaking through a hose like this.
I also found it perfect for snaking down the sun roof drain holes that go down the drain bt the windshield and the car door.
This way you can shape the brass wire to conform to the shape of the hose much easier.
The wire is found in the jewelery making section and much cheaper than a hardware store snake. 🙏

You should re-route your drain hose to the top of your cabinet and above your disposal connection point. Otherwise, the discharge tube will become clogged, as you found out! Can also cause mold/mildew smell from garbage disposal.

My dishwasher drain hose has a check valve... can i replace the drain hose without the check valve? I think my dishwasher is not draining because of a faulty check value.

My dishwasher won't drain. I'm about to get at it, but i wonder why you can't take the hose out and then work on it? Wouldn't that be easier?

When you check whether the water will backfill the dishwasher, isn't there a check valve (flapper or ball valve) that prevents this? Otherwise when you drain the sink, water will go into the dishwasher.
