All, this is good information. Also if you have just installed a new garbage disposal in your sink, make sure the plug is removed. It is really easy to do just a screw driver and a small hammer. You can remove the plug prior to installing the disposal or if it is already installed just put you hand inside and pull the plug out. It’s made of plastic. If you are installing a badger insinkerator, read step 15 in your instruction manual. I didn’t and had water standing in the dish washer. This was the problem for me. Hope this helps someone.
You saved me hundreds of dollars from not having to call in someone who service my dishwasher. I read your post and found out this was exactly my issue. The installation video I referenced didn't mention this at all. Thanks so much.
12/21/23 Good idea to blow out the water drain hose. I did not have enough lung capacity and strength. I used an air compressor. I placed a 3/4 inch PVC nipple covered with an uncap with a quarter inch hole drilled. This worked very effectively. . it cleaned out the clog from the Kenmore Elite. It is now pumping the water out effectively. thanks for the good idea.
Had same thing few months back, it would work every other time you tried to run it. After few times, the code came back on, pretty much I found glass stuck in the impeller and I believe it was there long enough that the motor was burnt out and wouldn't work until I replaced it. Works now, glad yours worked out 👍 keep the videos coming Handyman!
This worked. I couldn’t blow into it so I took my shop vac and sucked it out. Then I could blow into it, granted it’s really hard to get bubbles but I saw hope. Kept adding water and sucking it out with the vac. Great quick fix thanks!

9:02 i have the exact same dishwasher and just did the exact same fix. i was shocked at how cheap they were using string. what annoys me even more is that i know i will have to replace it again in another few years. my grandmother has had the same dishwasher since 1981, and the difference in build quality is huge. things really were made to last back then. had to replace the dispenser as well because the plastic tab that hooks onto the latch broke off

Hey handy man nice job figuring that out. I have installed many dw and inspectors here in florida want dw drain line coming from up top as close to top as you can then loop or have a lift and drop to keep from having water back flowing from sink back into dw and not draining right . Some counties want line strapped or zip strip holding high or holding loop. Good video ! Till the next one !
Thank you very much for the tip about the loop! My dishwasher was continually getting stinky and we couldn't figure out why. My dishwasher discharge line ran straight dishwasher to the disposal.. and I'm guessing it doesn't have a checkvalve in it to prevent flow from the sink into the dishwasher. Didn't have enough line to create a loop, but pinned the line up high, very close to the countertop and well above the disposal... it's been about two weeks now and the stink is minimal!! We've been washing dishes by hand in that time... there was still a little stink left in the dishwasher tonight when we looked for the first time so we're going to re-run it tonight to clear that out and get a better "stink baseline", but I think I'm going to go ahead and call this a win! Thank you again
i mess around for 6 hours cleaning the hardwater out of my dishwasher and it still didnt work until i blew the pipe like u did in this video and after that the damn thing worked finally , i guess it needed all the air out of the hose to make back pressure thanks so so much for your video, watched 20 others and it didnt work.
I had a similar job 2 months ago. It turned out the check valve (a little rubber flapper valve) had broken off and got clogged in the drainage hose. I made a new one from a rubber flip flop sandal I had in my truck and it's still working. I did not charge for the new part :-)
Pls talk to us as your doing your stuff. No clue what drill bit ur using or which hose under the sink do we disconnect? I have 4 hoses with my disposal. I need better instructions
Please don't use a drill just use a standard Philips screwdriver the hoses that go to your dishwasher should run through holes that are drilled through the side of the cabinet there's a water supply hose and there should be a clear or maybe solid colored holes it's usually corrugated that will connect to a garbage disposal or the tail piece of the kitchen sink if the dishwasher is not draining try holding the drain option or holding the start option to cancel the operation to see if there's a humming sound if there is a humming sound that would indicate that the pump is still running if the pump is running try disconnecting the drain hose from the garbage disposal or sink drain tailpipe and using approximately 4 to 5 ft of 12 or 14 gauge electrical wire you will need to curl it at the tip to push it through the drain hose that will clear any solid debris from the hose you may require a multi-bit screwdriver such as a 11 in 1 to remove the drain hose from under the sink
The two dishwashers I've repaired for friends both didn't drain because of a broken wine glass. Bits of glass got stuck in the bottom filter, pump drain, etc.
@@billgatess1 I took out the racks. Undid the filter at the bottom and looked around the very bottom with a flashlight and carefully extracted the bits of glass there and in the filter.

Great video, thanks! My dishwasher is not draining consistently. It drains initially and then stops. The dishwasher rumbles but no water is drained after the initial burst. Does this mean my drain pump is bad? Will drain pumps work intermittently or do I have another issue?

What area are you in? Is there a P-Trap on the ABS? That is the first time I have ever seen a dishwasher drain into an open pipe like that. Most parts of the country require the dishwasher to go through an "air-gap" before draining into the main line and all drain connections should be secured with clamps. Looks like there should be a screen protecting the impeller from debris. I also do home repair and remodeling on the west coast and much of the work I do is following other people around correcting the things they have done improperly.
in sweden we have like plastic trays that you put you dishwashing machine on that tilts a little so you would notice if there is a leak and then prevent mold and stuff ;D
You'd think they'd use something like a braided cable with loops on the end... but then they'd probably have to have metal pulley wheels and all of a sudden the dishwasher costs a dollar more to make.
7:02 ...if you want your dishwasher to load hot water then run your hot water at the kitchen sink until it runs hot before starting your dishwasher otherwise it will load the cold water that has been sitting in the pipe between your water heater and dishwasher (which will likely be the amount that it needs and very little hot water will go into the washing cycles (the hot water will only fill the pipe between those appliances and it will cool off by the time the next cycle comes, the result being that you will be washing your dishes in cool or cold water (unless you DON'T use the energy saver settings or DO use the heating element setting if your system has one))). I have the idea that you will understand the situation and how it is occurring now that its been brought to your attention... Best regards.
I had to do this to mine too and it stunk worse than the locker room at a WNBA basketball game at halftime. I was ready to scrap the unit but put Vicks vapor rub on just under my nose and I got through this job.

should be a check valve built into the pump that doesn't allow you to blow backwards like that. (has to be here in Canada maybe different in your location) the filter is fine its a dishwasher not a garburator. large foods and solid items should be removed from the dishes before they go in. anything the soap cannot break down the dishwasher, by design will attempt to flush down the drain. also if the pump is running with the door open as it was in the video, it means that your flood switch has been tripped.
You seem to know about dishwashers I have same problem with my dishwasher not draining. But I detach drain hose from sink drain. Dishwasher drains fine into bucket. (The sink drain is not plugged)
@@hotrodhog2170 Possible my guess was some sort of water filter but I couldn't think of any reason why it would look more electrical in nature. If it was a heater it would make more sense.
Also, put a level on the unit. It needs to be level all directions or water can leak past the gaskets. Just like if the dishwasher is got food build up or calcium build up in the spray arms. That can also cause water to spray oddly and a perfectly good door gasket will leak.
I haven't watched the video yet, but my dishwasher did this first time using it in our house when we bought it. Whoever installed it didn't angle the drain hose the right way. So the water wouldn't drain fully and would just back up into the washer.
I'm in an apartment and they just installed a new dishwasher and it wont drain on the first use. Now the office is closed because of corona and my dishwasher smells like a dead tooth. I'm going to have to scoop the water out by hand because I dont want to make anything worse lol. I have a feeling it's like what some comments have said where it's not level... I don't know

7:43 what is that on the right?
Also I have this exact same dishwasher. Thanks!
kmonnier I was wondering the same thing. It looks like a sandwich bag with a rubber band fashioned on to a dish soap dispenser to catch a soap leak.
Thanks for your videos.
u r just awesome i wish i was this handy
Also, put a level on the unit. It needs to be level all directions or water can leak past the gaskets. Just like if the dishwasher is got food build up or calcium build up in the spray arms. That can also cause water to spray oddly and a perfectly good door gasket will leak.
I haven't watched the video yet, but my dishwasher did this first time using it in our house when we bought it. Whoever installed it didn't angle the drain hose the right way. So the water wouldn't drain fully and would just back up into the washer.
Thats exactly my situation. I am watching vid before going to house to fix dw.
What is that orange bag at 7:32?
A leaking soap dispenser
Great fix. Saved me $404 as I didn’t have to replace a washer in my rental
Thank youuuuuuu omg!!!! Your a lifesaver.
Artur’s Handy man 🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍
Hello Artur
I'm in an apartment and they just installed a new dishwasher and it wont drain on the first use. Now the office is closed because of corona and my dishwasher smells like a dead tooth. I'm going to have to scoop the water out by hand because I dont want to make anything worse lol. I have a feeling it's like what some comments have said where it's not level... I don't know
How about s dishwasher that leaks?
Great Job As Always ‼️👍👍🔨. Vinny 🇺🇸
That waterhose is nice we use them at work
Wish I could say this is helpful.
Is that an Electrolux Dishwasher?
