I believe Anne Rice lost her own daughter and the loss of Claudia in this novel was her processing that grief through writing about Louis's grief. One of the most devastating deaths in cinema history. Dunst should have won a best supporting actress oscar for this EPIC performance.
Tom was so good in this. Anne Rice initially thought he was a terrible choice for Lestat. But after seeing his performance, she admitted she was wrong and apologized.
Lol, I remember that. I live not far from her old mansion in the Garden District, she's such a legend! 😂❤ But ye, she bashed Tom Cruise and after she saw his performance she took out a front page op-ed in the Times Picayune ...just to apologize to him 😂❤

In the second book of the Vampire Chronicles it was confirmed that Lestat is bisexual. He lost his virginity to a girl from a traveling circus and was hopelessly in love with a man named Nicky when he was human. After he was turned into a vampire he flirted with most of the women he came across and enjoyed the blood of beautiful young men and women. He has had many small dalliances through the franchise from both genders but Nicky and Louis are Lestat’s most prominent male lovers ( and the two he has been closest with) and his most prominent female lovers were Akasha and a witch from… I think the seventh book in the series? Louis is an interesting case because in the books he had a psudeo romantic interest in a human woman he befriended as a vampire and then his romances with Lestat and Armand. Due to the heavily queer nature of vampires in Ann Rice’s work many feel that her characters are biromantic, since blood drinking works for both genders and it leads to a steamy chemistry.
Tbf, him not kissing Armand is actually a really cool way to showcase Louis teasing Armand with what he couldn't have and making him live with it as revenge

Human Claudia would not have survived. She might've had the plague as well & no one would've taken her in. Orphanages at that time were mostly overcrowded & underfunded, usually preparing the children for work. There were also work-houses where you toiled until you died. Claudia actually had a luxurious life for many years, even though she could never age. But I also wish she could've at least been given Madeleine as a 'mother' & moved on.

Brad Pitt's hair was real. He was the only one not to wear a wig! You guys should try watching the new TV show based on The Vampire Chronicles.
If you didn’t know already - it was an extremely uncomfy shoot for Tom and Brad because they would hang upside down before takes to get their veins to pop out on their faces. I can’t imagine that lol
This is unironically one of my favorite movies of all time. I can watch it over and over and never get sick of it. I'm so happy you two are giving it a view! :D
Same, but I don't even know why it would be ironic. It's a masterpiece. My sister had it on a burned video tape when I was a kid and I've loved it ever since.
I attended Anne Rice's Halloween party shortly after this opened, and she talked so much about how much she adored Cruise here. I agree -- this will forever be my favorite Tom Cruise performance. He's just so loose and sensual and having a blast, and I love the blonde hair and how it frees him. He's usually always so compact and uptight as an actor, so driven and boxy, but here he is this long languid elegant line. And Cruise did dye his hair for this (he made Jordan film test him with blonde hair and reports were that Nicole Kidman was so thrilled with his blonde look -- and then the extensions -- that the hallway echoed, bless her heart). In case it helps, it is very clear in the books that Louis and Lestat are vampiric lovers (although, in her world, vamps can't have sex, but they experience it through the bite, etc.). Director Neil Jordan is also very gay-friendly and directed The Crying Game (highly recommended). Claudia's loss is a real loss. As many noted, Rice lost her little daughter very young, then after grieving, wrote INTERVIEW in a month while drinking the entire time. The vampire "Swoon" is the "swoon" of intoxication. She recovered afterward but I think it's an important detail. I personally love the ending and how the movie improves it over the book. I also loved how Jordan incorporated "The Vampire Lestat" elements (sequel) into this, like that vampires can fly, read minds, etc.
Vampires become more powerful as they age, which is why Louis has more strength in the present than in the past. There is also a vampire code in which it is forbidden to kill vampires and also convert children, the elderly and the disabled. For this reason, Armand had to send Claudia to be killed, to "reestablish order." Loved the reaction, as usual 🤙🤙🤙
Fun fact: For the actors who played vampires, especially Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Antonio Banderas, they were hung upside down until the veins in their faces popped out, and then the makeup artists would go over the veins with a special marker/pen to draw the lines, then they'd add the pale foundation makeup on top to give it that effect. Actors typically spent upwards of half an hour upside down for this purpose every single time they did makeup until the artists mapped the veins and drew themselves a guide to speed the process up.
@Nickxxx85 Actually, both Tom, Brad, and the production team, including makeup, revealed in behind the scenes footage and interviews that they did this to achieve the natural looking veins.
Interview was written from Louie's point of view so that's how he saw Lestat. The rest of the books will explain Lestat in a new light. To this day, Lestat is still my favorite Vampire. ❤ I loved Tom as Lestat but after I watched the new TV series, wow... Sam Reid is the perfect vampire. 😍 He was so scary but completely inviting at the same time.
I used to be so obssessed over Tom’s Lestat and thought no one will ever come close to him, yes, until I watch Sam’s Lestat😂 I like Sam from the time I first saw him in The Riot Club (a gay role also) and I love his voice and performance there, but I could never imagine how suitable he is for the role of Lestat

I don’t think Lestat hated Claudia, in fact he’s quite fond of her to be honest. He took advantage of Claudia to trap Louis but really spoilt her at some point and even getting hurt by her hatred toward himself. Even when Louis and Claudia tried to kill him, not once but twice, he still had no intention of killing any of them And for sure, Claudia is a woman trapped in a child body, she grew attached to Louis as a woman to a man, but since she’s forever remains a kid, she vented her anger on the one who caused her that pain-Lestat Lestat and Claudia somehow resemble each other personallity wise, no wonder they’d like the same man:)))
OMG I LOVE that you guys did this reaction! Iconic! You guys should TOTALLY react to the Interview with the Vampire tv series from AMC... you thought this was gay, the show LEANS HARD into it and Sam Reid as Lestat and Jakob Anderson as Louis are FANTASTIC!
You guys have to watch the new TV series of this story. The vampire chronicles was originally a book adapted in movie, and now there’s a new adaptation of the book called the Interview With The Vampire.
Absolutely! You guys would love it! As a reader of the novels Its EVERYTHING the movie should have been! You will fall in love with both Loui and ...especially...Lestat! This is the Lestat that should always have been!
The AMC adaption is so good… you guys should react to “Queen of the Damned” so many people rag on it, but it’s honestly a fun campy time and Aaliyah slays as Queen Akasha.
@HuntingViolets I'm talking about The Queen of the Damned. Interview with the vampire is of course very gay...QOTD? Lestat kept sucking blood of his groupies, had hot scenes with Akasha and ended up with Jesse...plus Louis and Nicki were totally erased from the plot. He was "alone" for hundreds of years and the violin he got was from a random girl...yeah, sure.
About Louie not "compelling" Thandiwe Newton, the female slave, I think in this they don't all have the same powers, and powers take time to get stronger. That's why he wasn't fast in the beginning when fighting Lestat. But really fast in the scene with Christian Slater.
This. Louis is weak even by vampire standards, while Lestat is one of the most powerful. They don't spell it out, but I like the way they show their different abilities in the movie.
Two fun serial killer movies are Serial Mom and Copycat, Kathleen Turner and Sigourney Weaver respectively. Good times. Love your reacts oh Petty Perfects.
This movie came out when I was in college and it was Everything! At the time it was all about Tom and Brad, but Kirsten Dunst remains the best part of the movie. Tom Cruise used to be so much more interesting and liked playing characters that challenged people's perceptions of him, but I don't think he would ever make this movie today. It *was* nominated for two Oscars -- for Art Direction and for Score. And Kirsten Dunst was nominated for a Golden Globe.
I always say if Louis and lestat just got it over with and slept together they would have had a happy ever after. This tension is what caused all the drama
Anne Rice's book makes it clear that vampires can't have sex, in large part because their bodies really are "unchanging"(you do the math) The truth was that Louis and Lestat were absolutely a legit vampire couple for quite a while. They were just a very TOXIC couple.
The Vampire Chronicles are my favorite books of all time. Even though Antonio Banderas in no way resembles Armand from the books he does a great job here. It was a controversial decision to cast Tom Cruise as Lestat, but he actually did a fantastic job with the character. I hope y’all will consider watching the series. It’s not as good as the movie but it’s still entertaining. River Phoenix was supposed to portray “the interviewer” but sadly passed away. Enter Christian Slater.
Lestat is actually a very young vampire. In the book, he has his dying father with him at Louis's. (In the TV series, which you may want to check out, he has been aged up.)
I loved this reaction!! This movie shaped me as a child I loved vampires and spooky things. If you want an even gayer version of Louis and Lestat you guys should definiteley check out the AMC ‘Interview with the Vampire’ show. It is Everything!
Please watch the AMC version - OMG it is so good. It has been updated and is set in a different time and a whole different cast(of course) but damn, it is so cool - especially the way the actors were a lot more willing to cross more boundaries then this one did...
Y’all HAVE to watch the new series, it’s unapologetically GAY and somehow even better (in my opinion) than the movie. Sam Reid is a huge Vampire Chronicles fan and the way he brought that to his Lestat portrayal is IMMACULATE.
"Queen Of The Damned" combines the 2nd & 3rd books in the series. Lestat is completely different as all the other books are written in his words, not Louis'. In this movie Lestat is the biggest rock star on the planet and openly as a vampire which pisses off other vampires as he's giving away all their secrets and they plan on killing him at his concert in Death Valley.
The moment when you said "Why don't you kiss him?" Louis and Armand... That was the moment in high school that I realized I was a Hag. It was the 90's. THAT scene was waaaay further than most movies would have gone. But I remember sitting in the theatre and in my head saying "Kiss him... KISS HIM! Omg, I wanna see them kiss!" Literally the first time I'd ever thought that about two men... but not the last. It was the beginning of this very long journey for me. 😂
I'm still at the middle of the vid but I'm craviiiing for a reaction from the series. They got so much closer to the books than the movie ever did! Hope the boys will give it a shot someday♥
Aging Claudia so drastically is my main issue with the series, lol. Armand was turned when he was in "the flower of adolescence", so teenaged Vampires were obviously a thing. But Claudia being 5-6 yrs old was Lestat thumbing his nose at the rest of the vampire world. This was his so-called "worst sin." Making her a teenager kind of takes the teeth out of this big bad sin. I do think the series has amazing cinematography, though..
@@Busha69 Lol, I find that most of the "series/movie- only" viewers lose a lot of *who* Lestat really is, without the perspective of the books. Lestat wanted to be a priest, was turned into a vampire and immediately orphaned ... Lost his lover, Nikki, to *the dark madness* and ultimately became the owner of the Theatre de Vampire. Without all of this ... He kinda comes off as arrogant for arrogance's sake. The chap had a hard 400 years, by the time he meets Louis 😔♥️😅 ... Also... Watched his own mother die and turned her at the last because Gabrielle was the *only one* who understood him. Lestat is more tragic than Louis, imo.
I’ve always loved this movie! It came out when I was a little hit and my parents to this day remind me how I watched this movie nonstop. And for the scene with Brad & Antonio… I believe I heard there was suppose to be a kiss but one of the actors was against it. No confirmation of which actor it was but it was heavily implied that it was Antonio… allegedly
A little fun fact, vampires are actually known for 90% of the time having queer themes. The theory is that all vampires are bisexual. This has been shown throughout Dracula, Carmilla, and many more works. The reason for this was to display queer people as demonic back then, that's why works such as Carmilla was written. But Anne Rice was inspired from (besides her family) Dracula's Daughter. This was a sequel from Dracula and showed queer themes. This was her inspiration for Interview with the Vampire. She and her son (before she passed) helped produce the show.
One of my favorite movies since I was a teenager! Lestat and Louis, my beloved. The chemistry in this movie between them, and between Louis and Armand are insane. Claudia and her death breaks my heart every time. Kirstin Dunst is absolutely killing it and it's astonishing considering her age at the time. She should have gotten all the awards!!!
I would've happily become a vampire and swept through cities, towns, boroughs, municipalities, metropolises, suburbs, communities, villages, quarters, districts, shanty towns, ghettos, slums, hoods, favelas, barrios, projects....gorging on the blood of the guilty and the innocent alike, to be with Lestat and Louie....and felt no types of bad about it. 💯👌🏾❤
One of my favourite movies of all time! The script, the acting, the music, the atmosphere... it's the most Gothic thing to ever Gothic. The heightened emotions are part of the genre. 😄And yes, it's gay. Anne Rices' vampires aren't sexual, but they're very sensual and form deep romantic bonds with their partners. Even after the murder attempts and everything else, Lestat and Louis are a couple in the novels. Kirsten Dust 100% deserved an Oscar. Not only was it her first movie, but she outperformed a whole cast of A-list actors at 11 years old! It blows me away every time I see the movie.
Slay, fam, you're still both fabulous! Anne Rice had a young daughter named Michelle who passed away unexpectedly. Stricken with grief, Anne entered a short period of seclusion and wrote the first draft of Interview With The Vampire, in which Claudia represented her loss of Michelle. While as the first of the Vampire Chronicles series went, it was given mixed reception (due largely because of the homoerotic overtones), the rest of the series has a very dedicated cult following in fandom. Lestat became the fan favorite from the books, not the first film. And the mythology Anne Rice developed was definitely a rather unique take on the whole Vampire Origin story. If either of you enjoy more 'spicy' stories, Anne Rice is also famous for having written the "Sleeping Beauty" series under Anne Rocquelaire as a pen name, because they are BDSM erotica to the level that if you were to put 50 Shades of Grey on a shelf which also contained the Sleeping Beauty series, 50 Shades would spontaneously combust out of shame for how pathetically vanilla it was. 50 Shades isn't even worthy of being used as a bookmark for Sleeping Beauty. But don't say I didn't warn you. Mebbe just start with the first book and try the first few pages to see if it's really for you. LOL. Nothing gory, but.... oh my, Anne was a kinky girl.
Guys, I strongly recommend that you read the vampire chronicles, all of them. the second part has many answers Why was Lestat so obsessed with Loui?: because from the beginning it reminded him of his first love, when he was human, becoming a vampire also turned him, only he didn't resist it well, he went crazy and committed suicide. And yes, I'm going to give you a spoiler about Claudia, she comes back as a spirit in another book... and it's not pretty, she's a very, very angry and vengeful spirit, to the point that she hates everything, including Loui. Why does Lestat say that he will be given the option that was never given to him? Why is it so, Lestat was kidnapped and turned into a vampire against his will, and on top of that, that vampire thinks of committing suicide just minutes, hours?, of Lestat's conversion, and it doesn't explain anything at all Please, the sequel, The Queen of the Damned, that movie didn't come, for the love of Rice, don't watch that...thing...better read the books Among my favorites is the queen of the damned, and Blood and Gold or THE Sanctuary, as others know it.. Marius Romano is my favorite vampire, Mael is the one I hate the most in the entire saga... that unfortunate... among the vampires my favorite is Pandora, but Bianca... she, God, there is no heart that can resist Bianca, she is the character that is loved by everyone Definitely, if I could have been a Rice character, I would be one of the observers OF THE ORDER OF TALAMASCA Seriously, look for the book collection, it won't disappoint you.
River Phoenix was set to play Daniel- he was very excited about the role and was the vivid image of the character, but sadly, he passed away before production started, so he was recast. Since you mentioned it, another interesting fact is that actors would be asked to turn upside down so that blood would rush to their heads- this made their veins pop and easily traceable with makeup. Also, people often say that Tom Cruise (because of scient*l*gy) was the actor who wasn't comfortable with the gay "undertones." But from on-set accounts and interviews, he understood the nature of the relationship between Lestat and Louis and played the part accordingly.
Sunset. San Francisco is in the western United States. Since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, if you are on the west coast and see the sun on the ocean's horizon line, then it HAS to be setting.
I believe this was Antonio Banderas's breakout role. I'm a longtime moviegoer, and I had no recollection of him until this film. He's incredible in this. Claudia DID have her moment. When she went off on Louis to make that sad woman a 'mother' for her, a replacement 'companion' for her, THAT was her moment. Claudia burned it all down so she could step out of this wobbling relationship and start creating her own relationships. So hard. So cold. So feral. Not child-like at all. The character holding her own reflecting the actor holding her own.
y'all know louis and lestat reunite in Queen of the Damned right? it was cut from the movie with Aaliyah, so they could make Lestat straight - but it happens and will probably happen in season 3 of the show too.
So Christian Slater was a last-minute stand-in; as River Phoenix was supposed to play the reporter. But Phoenix's untimely death cause the studio to recast the role. Slater gladly took over for his friend; as he wanted to si the role Justice
I believe Anne Rice lost her own daughter and the loss of Claudia in this novel was her processing that grief through writing about Louis's grief. One of the most devastating deaths in cinema history. Dunst should have won a best supporting actress oscar for this EPIC performance.

The AMC adaption is so good… you guys should react to “Queen of the Damned” so many people rag on it, but it’s honestly a fun campy time and Aaliyah slays as Queen Akasha.
The music /soundtrack is the best aspect imo. Stuart Townsend and aaliyah are great too. I don't mind the red head girl either
@@Kad6976x yes the music is amazing.
They tried so hard to make the movie heterosexual...it's such a disgrace ew.
The sountrack is iconic 00's, but QotD is an absolute travesty.
Have you guys not seen the Interview With The Vampire series?! It is a must watch!
About Louie not "compelling" Thandiwe Newton, the female slave, I think in this they don't all have the same powers, and powers take time to get stronger. That's why he wasn't fast in the beginning when fighting Lestat. But really fast in the scene with Christian Slater.
Louie was a vampire that never truly had any gifts. All these vamps had different and varying abilities except for Louie.
This. Louis is weak even by vampire standards, while Lestat is one of the most powerful. They don't spell it out, but I like the way they show their different abilities in the movie.
Kirsten really stood out on her own here! If you react to the series version, I will definitely watch!
Two fun serial killer movies are Serial Mom and Copycat, Kathleen Turner and Sigourney Weaver respectively. Good times. Love your reacts oh Petty Perfects.
In the 90's Brad didn't need a wig. All that glorious hair was his.
I still know this movie by heart.... my VHS copy was so used it wouldn't play in the end. Kirsten's Claudia was PERFECTION ❤
Apparently, in the books and tv show, things are different, like, for example, Louie and the Lastat are gay lovers.
You guys should watch the amc tv series version it’s so good !
Y’all HAVE to watch the new series, it’s unapologetically GAY and somehow even better (in my opinion) than the movie. Sam Reid is a huge Vampire Chronicles fan and the way he brought that to his Lestat portrayal is IMMACULATE.
In my opinion this is Kirsten Dunst's best performance of her career
"Queen Of The Damned" combines the 2nd & 3rd books in the series. Lestat is completely different as all the other books are written in his words, not Louis'. In this movie Lestat is the biggest rock star on the planet and openly as a vampire which pisses off other vampires as he's giving away all their secrets and they plan on killing him at his concert in Death Valley.
I would love to see you pumpkins react to the AMC series.
Please say this means you guys will be up to watching the tv series. Where there's gay subtext in this, in the series, it's text.
You HAVE TO watch the AMC series!! It's sooooo good. I loved this movie but the series is just soooo good, and I love Lestat in it. He's perfect.
I'm still at the middle of the vid but I'm craviiiing for a reaction from the series. They got so much closer to the books than the movie ever did! Hope the boys will give it a shot someday♥
I’m not sure if I 100 percent agree with that but the series is definitely entertaining.
Did you actually read the books? 🤨 because they took huge creative liberties.
The chap had a hard 400 years, by the time he meets Louis 😔♥️😅
... Also... Watched his own mother die and turned her at the last because Gabrielle was the *only one* who understood him. Lestat is more tragic than Louis, imo.
Better watch the series!!!!!😜 can't wait!!!!
I hope you review the TV version as well.
Great reaction! The AMC series is very queer! Highly recommend!!❤
The novel is fantastic, I highly recommend it, especially if you loved Claudia!
You guys have to watch the TV show from AMC.
Now I’m begging you to watch the AMC series!!!
💙💀💙
A little fun fact, vampires are actually known for 90% of the time having queer themes. The theory is that all vampires are bisexual. This has been shown throughout Dracula, Carmilla, and many more works. The reason for this was to display queer people as demonic back then, that's why works such as Carmilla was written. But Anne Rice was inspired from (besides her family) Dracula's Daughter. This was a sequel from Dracula and showed queer themes. This was her inspiration for Interview with the Vampire. She and her son (before she passed) helped produce the show.
Where has that ever been shown in Dracula?
Yes! *The* vampire story after Dracula! Please watch the AMC series as well, it is incredible!
It's trash*
I seem to recall that River Phoenix was signed initially to play Christian Slater's part., but had left us too soon prior to start of production.
literally my comfort movie lol tom cruise as lestat is everything, he understood the assignment!!
35:14 You two probably should watch "What we do in the Shadows". There is a straight answer to that.
She should have gotten all the awards!!!
i think yall would love the AMC show
I would've happily become a vampire and swept through cities, towns, boroughs, municipalities, metropolises, suburbs, communities, villages, quarters, districts, shanty towns, ghettos, slums, hoods, favelas, barrios, projects....gorging on the blood of the guilty and the innocent alike, to be with Lestat and Louie....and felt no types of bad about it.
I can’t believe y’all had never seen this but I’m so glad you recorded your reaction 😂
u should do the new series too its good
Ya really need to react to the TV series 2022's I think ya gonna love it too.
@pettypumpkins you should react to Interview with a vampire the series ITS SO SO GOOD!!!!!
That’s Brads real hair btw
you guys should check out the series adaptation too, released last year, a new vision but also worth it, and much gayer!
Thank you for this! Please watch the AMC TV show too, its absolutely amazing!
Guys, I strongly recommend that you read the vampire chronicles, all of them.
the second part has many answers
Why was Lestat so obsessed with Loui?: because from the beginning it reminded him of his first love, when he was human, becoming a vampire also turned him, only he didn't resist it well, he went crazy and committed suicide.
And yes, I'm going to give you a spoiler about Claudia, she comes back as a spirit in another book... and it's not pretty, she's a very, very angry and vengeful spirit, to the point that she hates everything, including Loui.
Why does Lestat say that he will be given the option that was never given to him? Why is it so, Lestat was kidnapped and turned into a vampire against his will, and on top of that, that vampire thinks of committing suicide just minutes, hours?, of Lestat's conversion, and it doesn't explain anything at all
Please, the sequel, The Queen of the Damned, that movie didn't come, for the love of Rice, don't watch that...thing...better read the books
Among my favorites is the queen of the damned, and Blood and Gold or THE Sanctuary, as others know it..
Marius Romano is my favorite vampire, Mael is the one I hate the most in the entire saga... that unfortunate... among the vampires my favorite is Pandora, but Bianca... she, God, there is no heart that can resist Bianca, she is the character that is loved by everyone
Definitely, if I could have been a Rice character, I would be one of the observers OF THE ORDER OF TALAMASCA
Seriously, look for the book collection, it won't disappoint you.
This is a classic! You finally did one I can watch!
You guys should start reacting to the True Blood series!! That show is crazy and out of control and fun!
Always nice to see first time reactions to this, its one of my fav movies.
Tom Cruise steals the show in this one, what a great character.
Sunset. San Francisco is in the western United States. Since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, if you are on the west coast and see the sun on the ocean's horizon line, then it HAS to be setting.
"The chemistry between them is electric."
(Awaits Banderas)
one of my favs! now you have to watch the amc series too! its absolutely amazing.
WHERE was Kiki’s Oscar nom??????????? Where in the FUK IS IT
y'all know louis and lestat reunite in Queen of the Damned right? it was cut from the movie with Aaliyah, so they could make Lestat straight - but it happens and will probably happen in season 3 of the show too.
Young brads bone structure is just unfair 😭👏🏼❤ BEAUTIFUL
If you’ll want gay action for interview with a vampire you gotta watch the series.
you should watch the tv series (interview with the vampire) that came out in 2022
Riding in boys in cars, I lost it 😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Google Brad Pitt in the 90s. With the good long hair, he was a beautiful man. That’s HIS hair and it was a COMPLETE VIBE 🔥.
With legends of the fall being the absolute hotness peak
@@zoephotoart absolutely!
The vibes are there? The text is there! As Giles said: the subtext is rapidly becoming text
Please react to the AMC+ Interview with a Vampire tv show! It’s way better than the movie and I love the movie.
You both look so handsome in your glasses! ❤❤
River Phoenix was supposed to play the reporter, but died before the movie started shooting. Christian Slater filled in.
So Christian Slater was a last-minute stand-in; as River Phoenix was supposed to play the reporter. But Phoenix's untimely death cause the studio to recast the role. Slater gladly took over for his friend; as he wanted to si the role Justice
