@@BecauseYourFish interesting. Colony in the old HOB eh... something I might look into. Cool. Was that yarn in the tank facilitating some of the plant growth? What's that about?
@@TheMalitz17 it’s a spawning mop. I will use clean ones in quarantine tanks for cover and hides. I end up putting them in most of my tanks though. They harbor beneficial bacteria and fish lay eggs or drop fry in them. They are great! Thanks!
@@JolliBliss yes but I believe that plants and mosses consume medications out of the water column so not ideal for quarantine when using meds. Thanks for your comment!
GREAT VIDEO. One of the BEST here on RUclips. I want some scuds for my pea puffers, lol. I would like to raise them like you do. Did your puffers have little ones?! THANKS!!😊
First time keeping them. I have 5 with 5 green fire tetras and hillstream loach. I also have 20 of pond snails and 20 ghost shrimp for puffers to eat, But I haven't seen the puffer start to eat the shrimp or the snails. It's hard to get them to eat the frozen blood worms cause there's some competition in the tank and if I put too much they sit at the bottom. So I'm definitely ordering my skuds grow culture. Thanks. I'm only feeding bloodworms once a day, and just added brine shrimp. I setting up a planter pond for the scuds outside.
Awesome. I used a worm feeder cone to get my pea puffers to eat frozen bloodworms and that way I could discard the uneaten worms easily. Thanks for watching.
very informative and right to the point, thank you for this beautiful video but I have a question if you don't mind, is it true that skuds may eat some of the plants in a planted aquarium? I worry that if they don't get eaten right away they may roam the tank when the lights go off and eat the java moss or other soft tissue plants.
Yes, scuds will eat plant material. They mainly eat detritus so they prefer dying plants. I find in a healthy tank they help keep it clean and your filters clean. They do eat through mosses and algae. They can eat through hair algae super fast. I don’t add scuds to tanks with fish that can’t eat the adult scuds or in tanks I don’t want scuds in. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
I just got 3 of them a few days ago for a 40g community. Theyre doing well but id like to see them eat more. Tried frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp, might have to try out the skuds!
I have a puffer who loves to eat and I think lots of puffers do too. Will my fish just keep eating the scud things? I don’t want them to live in the tank and he be constantly overeating... is that an issue with dwarf puffers and scuds? I would love to try, so km curious!
They will keep eating scuds constantly if they can but the scuds are difficult for the puffers to catch so it is hard for them to over eat the scuds. I’ve never had a problem with that. Thanks for watching!!
When do the males typically develop that dark stripe? I've got a group of four currently and three of the four absolutely have *SOME* white on their belly, with yellow sides (one has a fully white belly), and one whos belly is solid golden yellow with no white. I just want to make sure I dont have any eye gouging in the future
You will usually need to find a culture of scuds locally, from another hobbyists. It’s really easy to keep the culture going, too easy; it’s harder to get rid of them if you don’t want them anymore. Thanks
I keep them in a plastic shoe box, maybe 2 gallon, with a little crushed coral, coarse sponge and an air stone. One of my videos shows it. Thanks for watching!
Other hobbyists are probably your cheapest and best bet. Check local clubs or listings. They can also be collected from the wild but I would stick with a trusted source. Thanks Leo!
Great video. I’m attempting to keep these guys (well one) in a nano community aquarium. I think it’ll be successful since my tank is 125 gallon. Maybe I should add scuds for him yoo
Yes I hope so too. If they aren’t endangered yet they will likely be soon. I hope to take as much pressure off the species as possible. Hopefully I’m lucky! Thanks Kevin!

You need substrate and some live plants. They like to dig and they like to hide in plants.. you got none of that. All you have is the mop threads for egg laying.
Hey man love the video! Just subscribed! I actually just started my channel not too long ago and would love some feedback. Not looking for subsciptions or anything just some feedback of what I can improve! Thanks!
This was a great video, where do you get the scuds from?
My brother cultures them but I was able to get a culture started from the scuds that colonized my HOB filter. Thanks!

I feed my pea puffers bladder snails. I prefer to feed them ramshorns but bladder snails feed fine. Thanks!
@@BecauseYourFish brilliant! Thank you for that 😃👍
If I catch scuds from a stream what’s the chance if introducing parasites?
I don’t know. Not worth it in my opinion but I found scuds from a reliable source for free. Thanks!
What is a scud?
Do I see bundle of green yarn? Does it serve as an artificial plant?
Yeah the yarn is for the fish to breed in. Scuds will eat all the moss. Scuds are small freshwater shrimp. Kinda like water bugs. Thanks
i'm not english ..what scuds ? no translation
Gammarus shrimp or river shrimp. Freshwater small crustaceans. Thanks!
oh i know...this is Gammarus pulex

I haven’t been able to find anything but fry pea puffers do you know of a place where I can buy the normal size pea puffer
Most places sell little ones. Not sure I’ve seen many larger peas for sale. Thanks
Where do you find skudes
Local fish people or an aquarium club
Hey can i feed them mosquito larvae or earthworms(chooped)
I feed mosquito larvae. I don’t mess with earthworms so I can’t comment but the mosquito larvae are great.
how do u guys deal with bacteria bloom? mine seemed to remain the same after installing a UV light tho.
I usually let a bacterial bloom run it’s course. A cycled sponge filter added to the system will usually speed up the process. Thanks

The scuds usually keep it pretty clean and outcompete other shrimp but yes I have. Thanks for watching
