  • Why did I not get pea puffers earlier? These fish are adorable! Well today we are setting up another nano aquascape, and when I saw these guys at the store I just had to buy them! If you are thinking of setting up a planted tank, definitely consider the dwarf pea puffers.

I've kept pea puffers before, they're a pain in the arse to feed and to keep with anything but oh my god they are such personable little fish. They're as close to a pet as you can get in the water and also the only fish I have ever named.
With that said, they are social and prefer to be in groups, but I think you'd need a larger tank to have more. Perhaps two females would be okay with him but I wouldn't add more males (sex them by seeing the yellow on their belly).
Last comment, good luck with the shrimp, I'll be fascinated to see how he treats them as he gains size and confidence

Pea puffers live in large shoals in the wild! When doing my research before buying them, I also saw a lot of articles online saying they can be territorial and to keep them alone. Such conflicting information online! But if you buy them as a group when they are young they will generally get along vs getting new ones to add to the tank later on - this is when they will be territorial. I bought 3 for my 30 litre tank. Unfortunately one swam into a tiny hole in my filter and died within 24 hours 🙁 after patching up the hole so there would be no further casualties, my other two lived happily together until a month or so ago one of them got sick and died. The other one is still going strong but I think he gets bored on his own so trying to figure out some puzzles or games for him. He loves live snails and frozen bloodworms

Pea puffers are hard to feed some won’t eat anything that’s not live and some will only eat black worms or snails. I’d try some frozen bloodworms. They are pretty social and I wouldn’t wait too too long to add another or they might not tolerate more puffers. Also they will most likely eat all your non adult shrimp and maybe even the adults just depends. I ironically this weekend finally caved into my girlfriends demands and picked up 8 of these guys at a swap meet then to seen your video after getting them home is an odd coincidence. They’re still in quarantine and haven’t moved into their tank yet but mine seem to take to frozen blood worms fine but they definitely like live snails lol.

Hey man. Just a tip. Since I have sparkling gouramis and they really prefer live food. What I do is blend up a couple shrimps from the supermarket with tiny bit of water. Then I freeze that in a little plastic condiment cup with a lid. Every time I need to feed I just use a small sculpting craft tool to scrape some frozen shrimp and just stir it into the water surface. My gouramis love it.

With what I’ve read about pea puffers, they are more shoaling & I’ve seen an awesome little footage of a big group of them in the wild. Getting more is better & I guess the concept is like overstocking with cichlids & betta sororities to distribute any aggression & everyone distracting each other. & with a lot of areas that break line of sight. For a 10gal, I’ve read it would be good for 1 male & 2 females if you can sex them correctly, which is super hard. Mine is definitely a male when I saw his little “wrinkle lines” behind his eyes. Otherwise if they have a stripe down the tail, it’s a male....spots are female. But it’s so hard to tell at the stores when they’re young. Good luck!! I love them so much! & this another beautiful tank!

I also think that once the puffer will be fully grown, it will start to kill and eat even your adult Neocaridina shrimps. Still I think for pea puffers I prefer bigger aquariums and bigger group - I have currently 8 in 120 l.

Hi MJ! I'm watching your videos for some time now. They are really great. Congratulations and keep it up. I really like this your aquascape. I've kept pea puffers once. I bought three and put them in 35 liter tank. They were very young when bought. Then it turned out that I have two males and one female. Dominant male was quite aggressive and was chasing both other male and female.

    • @vaflooo
      @vaflooo Год назад

Eventually smaller male jumped out and aggression of dominant male focused on female, so I decided to keep them separately in different tanks. Some time later I tried again to put them together in larger tank (around 50 litres), but aggression repeated. In the end male died (I don't know why) and female lived alone around 1.5 years until she jumped out. She did not seem very happy alone. I think now that the best setup for pea puffers is at least 6-7 so that aggression can split among them all. I will try it once again some day. Good luck with your puffer!

I really like your tank I can't ever afford to have something that nice but I do have a 55 gallon and I have 15 pea puffers and 4 catfish I feed them once a day Frozen bloodworms they know when his time to eat they get very happy when I get up to the tank and they do sometimes Chase each other around but they're just being puffers I'm hoping one day to have a tank as beautiful as yours thank you for showing me your wonderful aquarium and keep in mind the puffer they are hunters they will eat your small shrimp I learned that lesson and they also like to eat ramhorn snails.

You need to keep at least 5 in a tank. They're great lil fish and have such great personalities.

On that tank I think a black background might end up looking better.
Does the puffer not mess with any of the shrimp? I thought they would hunt the neos. Maybe just the babies.
    Beautiful tank. ⭐️

Get a male (line in underbelly) and female in the tank. Then start doing water changes every week with rainwater. These fish will breed in the tank. I harvest rainwater from my roof and use that for water changes. My CPDs, Pea Puffers and Chilli Rasboras are breeding.

Juncus repens are a great plants but not what i thought at the beginning.
The first time i used it was during the lock-down.
We sold me this plant like a "hair grass" like hellentium etc etc (and easy to find at this hard times).
But, this plant don't stay little and quickly grow high and divided easily.
It's a great plant for background and one great thing are for the fish reproduction.
All the galaxy who are born in my aquarium come from a part of one of my tank with juncus.
Great for eggs, great for hiding, great to finding food at the beginning.
Keep this plant at 15-20 cm and one day, perhaps you will see some little fish just up of the juncus parts.
I don't regret this plant (even if i need to remake all this tank once i realize my mistake).
    Oh oh !
    Mini tétradon!
    be careful with your shrimps.
If your tetradon (you could put 3 in this tank easy) are well feed, ok
BUT they are big bully and could eat your shrimps like that !
The best food for this little guys are SNAILS !
(and that's fun to watch them suck the snails from their shells).
With a light like that (twinstar), you could take the backpanel out.
If the videos need it, put it back

Amazing scape, pea puffer main food is snails, I have one with other fish like green neon, 3 dario myanmar and plenty pest snails, which they start to be invisible. I'm worried about my narite snails, pea puffer trying to eat them, but at the moment is too small.

I have recently decided that I will be using my 55l dennerle for a pea puffer tank.
I have only just started to research them and for my size it recommends 3 - 6 depending on which arrival or paper it read but I think 3 if a good number but when I saw how small your puffer looked it your 36+l tank it made me think I probably could get away with more however I wouldn't want to push this tank to the brink I want them to be healthy, happy and I definitely don't want stress for them and whatever tank mates i decide on.
Did you emd up purchasing more PP's MJ, let me know please and also what your personal experience was like keeping them?
    Nikki ☺️

Hi MJ. Great looking tank. I'm new to aqua scaping and have my 1st every 60 litre tank which I'm working on just now. I'm so leaning towards getting Pea puffers when my tank is ready and cycled. Perhaps 2 (hopefully will end up being a male and female due to their male-on-male aggressive nature) I would like other fish also and so wish you had mentioned what other livestock, other than your plants, you had in this tank 😞as I don't want to overstock and aiming to have a nice peaceful community. Great video though. Well done.

Hey! That's awesome! Good luck with your first aquascape! Livestock in this tank is 3 amano shrimp, 4 otocinclus and a lot of neocaridina shrimp. As this is also my first time keeping pea puffers I'm not exactly sure what other fish would be best suited.
