Ive had a pea puffer in my shrimp tank for almost 2 years. He only eats the snails :p But Ive seen my guppies take in a full sized cherry shrimp and almost choke to death
I have Amano shrimps, Cherry Shrimps, & Otos with my Pea Puffers. The reason it's not working out for you is the way you escaped your tank is not giving places for others to hide. If you included rocks and taller plants, they would do well.
If you're dealing with semi aggressive fish, it's best to add them last to a community. They kind of don't know their place amongst the rest of the community and it kind of tames them. When changing water move some things around a little and add them last again. Keeps them in line for they don't recognize their territory anymore
To prevent buying a group of males (they were really small and young) I just got one and she's super chill (it's older now so I know it's a she). I have her together with a few amano shrimp, bamboo shrimp and otos. She was added last so she never looks at them. I give her blood worms and brine shrimps which she eats from my hand. I also throw in a bunch of tiny tiny snails once in a while when I don't see any anymore. She likes surfing in the stream I put in for the bamboo shrimp and always comes to take a look when I'm in front of the aquarium. She's named Patsy. Puffers have always been my favorite and I was so happy to get one. She does not disappoint. ☺🐡
I've found that pea puffers can live in a community IF there are more fish than they can shake a fin at. I have 6 pea puffers in my 20L overstocked community tank. No aggression towards any of the fish. They only chase each other around, hunt in pairs, or go out together as an entire group. It's really darn cute! If you have just a few fish/shrimp in there with the peas, they WILL take it down because they'll feel much braver against a few opponents. If there's a veritable horde, they don't dare.
I've had pea puffers for a year now. They are so fun to watch. I just got in 4 more. They came in so small I'm having to feed them daphnia and brine shrimp. I'm hoping to breed them this year.
Commenting as I watch because, yeah... My puffers have become so accustomed to eating snails that they WILL NOT touch any other food. Well established tanks are great because they will feed on micro crustaceans.
Okay last comment I swear. The two peas I have are fully grown and in a 55 community tank with two Angels (full streamers) 10 black neons, 10 black skirts, a bristlenose and 8 green Lazer Corey cats. All species have shown breeding. As long as there is enough foraging space/surface area/tank space and a good healthy diet of snails, they are great in a community! I might be an exception to the rule, I also have a lot of culled neocaridinia in the tank living out their lives.
Elena Makes Up hehe I have puffy with a school of ember tetras, otos and shrimp. I think people need to try keeping them with other fish a little more.
It's better when the amanos are in the tank before the puffers...that way it's more common that the puffer won't attack the amanos... Worked perfectly fine in my tank😊
My new pea puffers are arriving Friday, got loads of trumpet snails and frozen food, what do I do if I run out of just snails though. Do I just buy more for a variety of food for them. I ordered 3 1 male and 2 females in a 3 foot tank.x

I've got a pair of pea puffers in a community tank with some cardinal tetras, zebra danios, pearl gouramis, breeding bristle nose plecos and a betta fish. The betta has actually calmed the pea puffers napoleon complex
I have 2 pea puffers. 1 was always skinny but was eating well until recently. He hasn’t eaten the past 3 days. Today he ate 1 single bloodworm which I watched him eat. But I’m worried like you mentioned maybe he has worms. Can I treat him in his tank while his pea puffer tank mate is in there too or do I need to remove him. Also having trouble feeding him since he won’t eat. I tried snails bloodworms etc. You mention small blood worms? Do they sell small bloodworms? I have the package of bloodworms that come in big cubes too. I let it defrost a bit then put a very small amount in their tank by spoon.
Live blackworms are the food I find they're most eager to eat, mine never refused those. Fire treatment, if one has parasites, it's best to treat the whole tank because they spread quickly in aquaria.
Cautionary tip: I used to have 3 pea puffers in a 15 gallon (internet say about 5 gallons per puffer) and there was some aggression issues when they got acclimated where grown-up. There where 2 males and 1 female though so that might have added to it... so male to female ratio is probably important. I returned one of the males and aggression went away. I am also keeping them with full grown amanos, no problem as they will only eat what fits in their mouths. :)
I had the same experience except mine was a group of five with two males. One of the males did not survive the fight. I added two more, one male (could be removed and put into a different tank that also has peas) and one female. Now everything is okay. Guess it's because they both have access to an equal amount of females or something?😅
Setting up a pea puffer aquarium in the next couple of days. What substrate are you using? I plan on growing some dwarf hair grass & want to give it the best shot at carpeting. Thanks!
That’s crazy with your puffers and the shrimp. I have my five puffers with six amano shrimp, four panda cory catfish, and three Kuhli loaches. Questions for you: How many pea puffers would you put into a 10 gallon tank? I still feel really new to fish keeping though it’d been over a year since I started. I didn’t know about puffers being territorial, which is why they live with the fish I listed above. My puffers seem to be okay with where they’re at, but I could rehome them if it’s not a good setup. Do Kuhlis ever go after puffer eggs or fry? I’ve seen my puffers doing what appears to be mating behavior last night. I also saw one of my kuhlis out and about in the moss covered log the puffers were messing around in. I wish that flipper was a bit cheaper!! It looks super cool, but even with the 10% it’s still really pricey. Love your videos!! Where’d that raptor go? 😄
I have a pea puffer and i tried feeding it blood worms at first and he just wouldn’t eat it but when i fed snails he went right for it. I tried blood worms again a week later and still no interest in the worms and i still haven’t been able to get him to eat worms. Any tips on how to get blood worms mixed in his died. Right now i have to feed just snails
I just tried an amano shrimp with my single pea puffer. Seemed fine the first day, but then, on the second day, I couldn't find the shrimp. Still missing, this was just monday of this week.
I had like 15 or 20 pea puffers in a 60 gallon. After a few weeks i only had a handful. Tank was heavily scapped with spider wood, dragon stone and plants but the bullies basically starved out the others. Lots of nipping and chasing too. One even jumped out right in front of me while being chased. After a few more weeks, a couple of the remainders started outgrowing the others. i then realized my LFS accidentally sold me a few fahaka puffers as pea puffers. Their loss. But Fahakas can not live with any kind of other puffers (or any fish slow and small enough to chew). Gave 1 away, sold 2 & kept 1 for a few months before deciding to go with a more community tank and gave him away too. I wish i didnt. Miss that dude. He grew really fast and had a personality. He even ate sinking pellets, eliminating what many consider the hardest part of fahaka care, its diet. Most only will eat live snails or live worms only. They need the snails to file down their beaks but clam on a half shell will work the same. Many are just too evolved and will eat only snails though. Probably for the best as he would have soon enough outgrow the 60 gallon... he also attacked my asian leopard leaf fish. So he had to go. They all live with a 4" male map turtle. Hes never eaten a live fish and doesnt bully them either plus hes done growing at a little over 4". Turtles are the coolest freshwater aquarium animal imo. They swim like fish but get out of the water to bask in the light like lizards do. Most shouldnt buy a pet turtle. Those that do need to research or regret not doing it for decades. Sliders and painted turtles are the most common in the pet trade despite the fact that females will grow to be 10-12" and need a pind sized structure to live in. Map turtles, the texas map like mine, is a species whose mails grow to be 4-6" max. Obviously a small turtle can be set up in an aquarium of 55 gallons or larger whike big ones, like sliders, who need double that size at minimum. Search RUclips for abused turtles and see the fish bowls people try to house a 12" turtle without any uva/uvb light...im hopping off my soapbox now...
Puffers never actually crunch the snail shells, the grinding down of the teeth happens from scraping them when they try to dig out the last of the meat from inside the shell, which they wont bother doing if food is plentiful. Luckily Pea Puffers dont have any of those problems.
I don’t know you could have so many pea puffers in a tank! How many would you say is the max for a 6 gallon tank? Love your videos btw man, keep up the great work!
That's a challenging size, 2 would fit but you might have an aggression problem. I have 3 in a heavily planted 10 galleon, the 2 females are more tame but the male chases everything from a 5 galleon area he claimed.
