I live in Sweden and fell in love with Bird of paradise when I was working in Los Angeles. I've actually had several plants bloom, it took a few years, but with the right plant lighting, the right nutrition and a lot of love, they do great.
Finally a good video for outdoor care for a plant. It's so hard to find any plant tubers that even says full sun". It freaking drives me crazy lol. Thank you Joy for this great video, yay. I bought my first bird of paradise s month ago, it's outdoors getting full sun with a little shade in the morning/ early afternoon. My hardiness zone is 9a/ Texas. Everytime I turn around a plant person talks about leaves being burnt, it's overkill
Thank you so much for the video, I myself managed to get my Bird of Paradise to bloom, ( 1 flower) it was one of the best days of my life. Im hoping that its going to flower again this year. She was only 2 years old.
Thank you very much for this informative video. So much info that’s great. I’m in UK zone 8, but I’ll buy one in a pot and will keep it outside in summer and will take it into the shed in winter. We’ll see what happens.
Nell, I'm a new subscriber and love your videos. I took a trip to L.A. a few years ago and used my rent-a-car to drive up the coast to Santa Barbara and was it nice! We visited the mission and drove out into the countryside. I thought I had died and gone to Heaven! What a nice place to call home! Yeah, you're right about these plants being all over the place and Santa Barbara comes as close as it gets in the states for a perfect climate for them. Here in Lake Charles, LA you'll see them only occasionally in protected locations, as we do get occasional freezes here. They're generally only light(28-32 degrees) and in the middle of the night, in the late winter. I have a Strelizia reginae that's a 3 stalked plant in a pot that is growing on a patio that gets morning to midday sun, but is shaded from the late midday and afternoon sun which is ideal. I've had it about 4 months now and it seems to be enjoying our weather which is quite humid, especially in the summer. I'm hoping for it to bloom, but it looks rather young. Keep up the great videos.
Also, I had not been getting very many flowers until this past summer. I was going to move the plant to get full sun. The roots were too deep so covered it back up. Because of this, I had loosened up the ground all around the plant. A few days later, I saw seven new flowers coming and new I was going to get beautiful flowers.
Hello Nell!! Love your channel!!!! So informative! I garden around where I live and a neighbor has a bird of paradise that to me looks so ratty!! Alot of dead short stems at base that have to be cut to ground level. Also where the flower comes up and it splits I like to cut off the leaves off totally just to the fork where it splits. I hate the way it looks at base so I will be cutting all the dead stuff off bottom. Plus I randomly cut off the leaves as they look so bunched up and I like a open plant which this is not!! Any thoughts on this?? Thanks Nell! Loving all the info!!
Thanks so much for sharing your tips on the beautiful Bird of Paradise plant :-) sending heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic Thursday ahead XXXXX
Thanks Nell! This video was very spot on and helpful. You had my full attention when you mentioned that the plant takes a couple years to catch on because I, actually, planted mine approximately 5 years ago and I'm just seeing blooms this season. :) I am in the "dry" SoCal Region, where rain has been reduced to a bare minimum. Could you recommend other hearty plants that I use in my flower beds that could withstand the dry climate?
Hi Kimberly - You're so very welcome! I used to live in Santa Barbara so I'm familiar with the climate. Here are some choices for you: succulents, grasses, lavenders, rosemarys, penstemons, salvia, gaillardias, kangaroo paws & coreopsis. All those I've named have many species & varieties to choose from depending on the size, color & bloom times you desire. Happy planting! Nell
Hi I enjoyed your video was very helpful I bought mine at a garden center I live near Woodstock Ontario so it gets quite cold here in the winter but our summers are hot I already transplanted at once into a bigger pot right now it's outside for the summer but it was part shade part sun so I will put it in full sun like your video with saying. It's helpful in a winter that to rotate it I do not do that when it was my first pot.
Hi, I am in Maryland. I have a potted BOP for 25 years that blooms every January indoors. We move it outside from May to October. Another site says it can tolerate winter temps into the teens and twenties if mulched heavily. What do you think? Will it survive under snow?
Always appreciate your thorough presentations. Have you tried these in the desert yet? I have a client in Phoenix that just bought these and she wants to try to utilize them in vase bouquets… otherwise id just plant and let them do as a landscape ornamental. But, I’d like to know your experience and adjustments for ultimate results. If not, I guess I will figure it out as I go along. 💕
I bought 2 of these and planted them outside in my back patio. The position of the sun throughout the day does give the top half of the plant a decent amount of sunlight but my patio is small and has a wooden divider around it, keeping the bottom half shaded. I live in Sacramento California where it is warm and sunny although might get alittle bit colder compared to Southern California. Do you think it should do fine as is or did I make a mistake planting it outside where I did? It's been about a week and it seems to be doing just fine. No yellowing or wilting of the leaves or anything like that. Tips appreciate! Thanks!
I live in San Diego and just purchased 6, they are about 3 feet tall and very young. How far should I space them in my back yard ? Thank you and keep up the great videos.
Joy I have 1 question is it achievable to get flowing in a pot? I was looking at a 2ftx4ft box to put ony patio. And my concerns where the limitations of the birds of paradise plant. Can you make bloom in a box?
I inherited birds of Paradise with our house. I live in Queensland so it's hot and humid most of the year. So it's always been pretty good. But I think I thought it was less water than it actually needed as my one out the front hasn't bloomed much this year... I think its mostly dead. I know we dehead the old flower and stalk, but what about if knew of the stems are brown?? Cut it back and do a deep water??
I have a nice healthy one in my front yard here in Sacramento. The only thing I don’t like about it is that the tips of the leaves dry out and turn an ugly brown or gray regardless of how much I do or don’t water it .
I have one planted in my backyard. Some of the flowering turns a gross brown after a few weeks. I have a sprinkler head very close to it, I’m wondering if I’m over watering it, which would be causing the the browning? Or is the browning part of the natural cycle?
Hi I live in Louisiana where it is getting cooler my bird of paradise was purchased at least six months ago I bought a 5 inch pot Mulched it very good in the summer up until maybe two weeks ago before the cooler months came by it was doing really well now the leaves have turned brown it looks dead what do you suggest
hi, I live in canada and at my local garden shop they have some white flower ones for sale, I know you say they flower better root bound, but if I put them in the ground in the summer would they do well and FLOWER? or is it best to just bury it in its pot so it looks like it's in the Ground? thanks
This plant is also the official flower of a little portuguese island, Madeira Island. Estrelicia is how we call it. There we have all tips os bird of paradise but the common one is the Strelitzia reginae.
I recently planted my 3 year old potted birds and they are doing well. However there is one that started to 'split' (looking like two plants) while in the pot. My question is: Can I divide this split-looking Bird into TWO plants. If so, what's the best way to divide a bird. Thank you.
Nice video, and helpful information. I just bought a Birds of Paradise two days ago but I put it in a bigger pot soon as I took it home. After watching your video I feel like I made a mistake. What should I do?
hi .I bring this plant yesterday . I plant this outdoor.but there is so hot weather..can I. plant this indoor..it give flowers whithout sunlight ?i live in India.
hi,ihave a bop that in a 20in pot for about 5 years and dosnt bloom just started fertilizing every 2 wks its been 6 wks and no flowers do i need to wait more or is there something else i can do to help it,thanks
I noticed that the flower stalks sometimes comes out the side of the leaf stalk about 1/3 of the way up it. There is a distinct outer layer that marks where it comes from. Don't know how to better describe it. So wouldn't that mean we cut just above that, just in case a flower stalk is about to pop out?
Hi - I'm not familiar with what you're describing. The BOPs that I've seen all have flower stalks which emerge from the base. I do know that they take pruning really well & can be cut down by at least 1/2. So, you'd be fine cutting just above that point but it does take a little while for them to grow back & flower again. We’re very excited- but also confused 🤷♀️ 😅
How short should you trim a bird of paradise to maybe transplant and still be alive? The one at my house is huge and is like a little over 20 years old
Hi Nell, hope you're doing well. I've had a bird of paradise plant in a pot for about a year now, but I'd like to transplant it into the ground to start a tropical garden in my backyard. What would be the best time of the year to transplant it? I live in northern California, by the way.
Now's a fine time Marta. Depending on where you live in Nor Cal, you just don't want to do it during the cold &/or wet season. Just be sure to give it sun & good deep waterings so it can establish. Nell
I just accidentally broke the flower off of my one bird on the plant... Will my plant still live? It was really healthy living outside. I am in northern CA, inland. We get heat but I have scheduled watering. Great video.

Yes, that applies to most plants but it depends on the climate. Winter is generally not a good time because the plant is resting. Transplant houseplants spring through late summer/early fall. Hope that helps! Nell

Do NOT plant these against your home or where you have a sidewalk. I'm still trying to remove the bulbs from the ground. You do NOT want to put this ridiculous plant in the ground. In a pot is great. Also great info
Hard to see the plant when you're practically standing in it. Also, does everyone in California act this bizzare? Was hoping this video would be a bit more fact and information and less of "like,ohmugawd!"..

I live in San Diego and just purchased 6, they are about 3 feet tall and very young. How far should I space them in my back yard ? Thank you and keep up the great videos.

Very Informative Video. I bought mine today, 3ft tall. how would I know if it is old enought to bloom this year ?
Forgot to mention I am in Toronto, Canada (Zone 6)

Hi - The Bird Of Paradise has a very thick root system. They are subject to root rot in pots so you definitely want one with drain holes. Nell

Sounds more like a traveler palm. They have similar leaves and flowers without the orange. They have a vertical growth habit and grow 20 to 30 feet.
Do NOT plant these against your home or where you have a sidewalk. I'm still trying to remove the bulbs from the ground. You do NOT want to put this ridiculous plant in the ground. In a pot is great. Also great info
Why not? I was actually about to do that.
