I have been wanting to find time to do this project at my In-Laws for a while. It's one of those satisfying transformations that costs little but can make such a difference, even with just the few hours I had that day. Lots more info coming in next week's Patio Top Tips video.

Great video. Used your tips to re-point my patio using Sika Fast-Fix. The hardest part was removing the existing pointing. Once that was done I just soaked small areas of the patio, swept the mix into the gaps then scored it. Thanks for the tips. I am the least able DIY person in the world but your video made it so easy

So glad I came across this video. I moved into my house four years ago and am only now getting to tackle the garden after redoing the whole house top to bottom, during which the garden became a bit of a dumping ground for skips, etc. I have paving slabs like these in the back garden and I would doubt they have ever been cleaned and have a lot of lichen. I had tackled it recently with ordinary bleach, it is slightly improved but could still be a lot better. Today I ordered Sodium Hypoclorite so I'm hoping that will do the trick. I was happy to see how easy using the sand appeared as I have a large bag which also has an element in it for killing off any weeds, etc that appear so that they cannot become established. Just for good measure I have also purchased a sealant to brush in over the stonework when all the rest is done to keep it looking well. I know it will be a lot of work but it should be worth it.
I also like the look of the low stone wall, another addition I have been considering for the garden. There were raised beds when I moved in that were made with railway sleepers and are looking very battered and tatty now. I have been thinking of replacing them with a low walled bed made of small blocks.
Anyway, it will all have to wait until I get the time and the weather. Once again, thanks for the very informative video!

This video was perfect for encouraging us to take this on. Went quite well. Some sand stuck in ridges on the slab surface, but it's easy to scrape off when it's dry. Our patio had very wide and deep gaps so 60 square metres took nearly 6 boxes! Well worth it though.

Great video, i carried out the same on my patio. That brush in product is fantastic. I used sodium hypochlorite to clean the patio, ground out the pointing that wouldn't come out by hand. I found soaking the material and pointing the joints with sodden material worked better than brushing.
I also re-struck the joints the following day for a super smooth joint. The material goes much further than I though. Even visitors comment of the finish.
We need to clean our shed floor which is concrete slabs! What would you recommend to clean other than a jet wash??
Sodium hypochlorite, it's like bleach but 10 times stronger, need full PPE and old clothes, horrible job but comes up spotless. You can buy this from your local farm supplies it's very cheap. Used to clean sterilise milk parlours.

what percentage strength sodium hypochlorite did you use? I used a 12% sodium hypochlorite, TSP, and borax mixture with surfactant to clean my shingles and it did excellent. Did you mix anything with your sodium hypochlorite?
Given your time constraints this was nice work - and what a nice surprise for your inlaws :-). Have used covid-19's lockdown to tidy my boring old 600mm x 600mm concrete pavers; will power wash later and brighten up with nice pots once I get an income again.

Hey! Just subscribed! We love watching ur how to videos! We’ve just re vamped our shed after 16 years and are painting the flooring tomorrow with masonry paint! The flooring is just a continuation of the patio slab area , where previous owners just built shed directly into slabs! 😔😔
My question is , how do we clean before paint because I don’t wanna jet wash the shed indoors for obvious reasons? What the best solution to clean ??

25L can of farm grade sodium hyperchlorite (“Red Label”) =£10
1. Add a good glug in a watering can with water and a squirt of washing up liquid.
2. ‘Water’ the patio
3. give patio a quick scrub with a broom to agitate the soap
4. Go for a cup of tea
5. After an hour, wash down with a hose pipe.
Job done!

Great video! I would love to know how this patio has held up when installed on a sand base? In Denmark they recommend installing sandstone on a sand base due to the heave created by frost thaw!
Thanks for sharing- a friend of mine has a n outside pool that needs grouting- not everywhere mainly one end - I was going to try to do this for him what product would you reccomend I think someone's used just sand/cement previously!
Really useful video - thank you. In your video you talked about some people laying these slabs on blobs on cement. That’s what been done in my garden and they left the pointing to me. I wanted to use the resin like you’ve done in this video but the gaps are 3 inches deep in some places which could be very costly. Is there anything else you’d recommend? Thanks.
After all that hard work.....you forgot the most important thing.....sealant!! Theres plenty around but the cheapest is a water based acrylic sealant - £60 or so for 25 litres. It will bring out the colour and make it a lot easier to keep clean. Probably need 2 or 3 coats.

great tutorial. as soon as the lockdown is over I plan to buy the pointing mix and crack on and sort my 2 patios out. can at least make a start and get the pressure washing done this Easter !

Main problems with these things are, having joints wide enough to park a bus in, and then using the dry mix method to avoid staining the slabs and getting the job finished quicker. Not knocking you for using the jet wash here as it’s prep for maintenance work. But pressure washing is not needed for general cleaning, it seals the fate of bad joints.
5:58 laying slabs on sand is a perfectly acceptable practice.

@@MrDanybe Looks like the patio in this video didnt sag at all. The slabs all look fairly level with each other. So I'd say the sand base did a decent job.
Really great video. Lots of information in here about using sharp sand as a bed but not for the pointing (which I'm glad you verified as I was about to do that!). I'm going to point my slabs with builders sand and cement but I really want a grey colour like your Fastpoint. Will the builders sand mix give me a brown? Or will it dry to a grey typically? My slabs are grey and I want a pale pointing, not a buff / brown.
Every area and supplier will have different colour sand. Therefore always best to do a few samples if you need a particular colour. Near hear it’s usually buff but now and then if I buy a few bags from Wickes it can be dark red so worth checking before you order/start.
@@TheRestorationCouple in the end (as Building Sand seemed to be an early casualty of the pandemic) I sieved a load of grit sand that I had left over from a bulk bag for my bedding mortar. This removed the larger bits of grit and gave me a good, light coloured fine sand for my pointing.

Wish my patio looked as good as that when the dirt is removed. Mine is just a huge slab of old concrete.
Alice Nelson i've just got some plain slabs, i've put some pots around with my favourite plants, so they are the focal point, you can also put a table and chairs on it too or a bench
The slabs are renowned for the joints to crumble its a soft mix! U dont use building sand to point!

A sharp sand/building sand mix has lasted well on a previous project we did but whatever weak sharp sand mix that was initially used on this patio has not. Didn’t intend to suggest that you would use a purely brick type mortar. 👍
@@TheRestorationCouple the problem is weather! Our winters are horrible! Soon as the frost hits, it destroys the joints! We lays these on site with a 4-1 sharpsand to lay and point!

Excellent video, very helpful. What is the make of the resin? I have tried brands which harden quickly, but for a slow diy man like me it gets a bit sterssful!!
It's actually very good practice to have sharp sand in the pointing mix. Sharp & soft sand with cement is a much stronger mix than just soft sand with cement. The reason most builders use soft sand is because it is easier to point with and you can strike it nice and smooth. Looks like there wasn't enough cement in the original mix.
Sand is between sediment/silt and gravel, and comes in many varieties, including river, beach and manufactured, with river sand the most sought after for it's properties.
So-called "soft sand" is river sand. The result of stone erosion in the mountains, transported hundreds or thousands of miles, being smoothed all along it's journey.
River sand results in the most homogeneous and strongest mix.
@@ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt you are trying to be a smart arse mate! I can tell you now, having some grit sand in your mix is the right way to point slabs.
I think the ratio I used in the past was a mix of sharp and building sand which worked well and held strong. I think it’s the fact that in this case it looked like it was a weak sharp sand mix almost brushed in which was the issue. The sharp sand mix we used a couple of years back did trowel up quite smooth and the larger aggregate disappear under the surface just fine but as you suggest much stronger than straight brick mortar. 👍
@@TheRestorationCouple yes brushing in a dry / semi dry mix of sand and cement just doesn't work. I use 1 sharp 3 soft and 1 cement mixed to a workable consistency. I've still not tried these brush in compounds, definitely looks a damn sight quicker than traditional pointing.

joe fowler From what Tim said, it sounds like the original installation was a bit of a rush job. Wide joints, just bedded down, and no doubt a brushed in dry mix to save time. Using pressure washers for cleaning means poorer installations are doomed!

Laying and pointing at the same time is the best way to point giving a stronger joint as the laying bed and the joint is one whole unit

I have a question, my patio has been done last year (all good) however the grouting btw slabs are deep and was wondering how could I make them more shallow. Would you use resin bound? The resin bound you are using looks like sand, is it how it comes? Thanks for advice
And again, as i get further into the video, laying them onto a screeded sand bed isnt incorrect, u can lay them on a 5 n 1 sharp sand mix either on a full bed or dabs, or u can lay them on sand screed! Your an active diyer not a landscaper!
Yes, correct, this is a DIY channel... Besides, I would never lay a natural stone patio on anything than a full mortar bed, for the slight extra time and cost it is far more durable than other options. Dabs on budget sandstone is surely asking for issues.
You should never lay sandstone on dabs, always on a full bed. Learned this from bitter experience after a cowboy 'landscaper' layed some of our patio on dabs when I wasn't around to check his work - less than one year later the slabs have worked lose, the pointing failing, and show blotchy staining. Do it properly or not at all.
I'm confused next time it rains heavily or weeds start coming though it's just gonna push all sand out. Sand and cement wet mix won't stain the paving either, that's why you sponge it off and light acid wash to finish.
It’s not sand? It’s resin bound and very resilient to weeds. We have had it down for nearly 5 years and all fine.

Strong bleach solution takes away those black dots on indian sandstone.
Do you have any tips on doing this with really deep gaps. I used the pressure washer and I blew out a lot of crap and some of the gaps go down a good couple of inches. Great video by the way.

From a very bad experience. Do not put any paver, patio sandstone sealer on with a brush. Always use a roller and do 3 or 4 slabs at a time and go back over it after 5 minutes to ensure you get no blister like bubbles.
Resin sand looks good for a few years ..then it all comes out..waste of money. Builders/plasterers sand..cement..a frost additive..graft and backache is the only long term solution.

Will the brush in product work on joints that are at least an inch wide? And what's the best way to remove the current material? It looks like cement but we've got all sorts of weeds growing through it.
Possibly ok in wider joints but would end up rather expensive. Old joints usually will pick out with any thin tool if weak enough. Otherwise it may be a case of careful work with an SDS.
Get the patio as wet as possible...obviously not too wet 🤔
I have a question that someone might be able to answer. Can I lay patio slabs over an old uneven walkway made up of pavers
We had a new patio laid and the polymeric sand didn't even last two years before it broke down.

Hi ,what's the best sealer for Indian sandstone ?
As a full time pressure washer i know its rare that a pressure washer (even the big petrol powered ones i use) would get rid of 100% of the black spot. If u apply sodium hyperchlorite for 15 mins and rinse it will get rid of black lycan.
Where do you get this please?
Sodium hypochlorite is the main ingredient in household bleach, but weaker in dilution, typically around 3-5%. If the lichen (black spots) are not as prominent on your paving then normal household bleach will likely get rid of it. Otherwise you'll need to use a stronger sodium hypochlorite solution.
You can get sodium hypochlorite from ebay or amazon.

He's using Fastpoint Patio Paving Jointing Compound by Stonemarket - Easy Joint is another similar grout, but I believe with EJ they recommend at least 25mm depth

I remember when we bought a kaarcher pressure washer in Scotland, loved using it.
Moved to England and never used it since due to the water rates-it just pumps out so much water/money!
Nonetheless it is satisfying to watch!
It's surprising how little it uses. I have used it with a waterbutt before and lasted for ages before running low. Certianly less than watering plants/

That pressure washer looks really small compared to our K4 full control. So you just chopped off a piece of her hose? I bet for some people’s hoses are like perfect length to reach a point in there garden and then they can’t reach that point anymore...
