- We are back on laying sub base, it's amazing how much of this we have done over the years, for paths, patios, concrete slabs and driveways. It comes ion all colours and names but MOT TYPE 1 is a standardised sub base mix which compacts well to give you a firm stable base for your final material, whether that's slabs, concrete or in our case path gravel.

This really is useful and great to see it coming out the UK - so much of this sort of content is too US centric - however I wonder if you might consider addressing a couple of practical questions? I like many, am watching these videos with my own long, long list of projects at home in mind, but I just cannot fathom how you are managing to get anything done? I have children at 4 and 2 - between them and working I just cannot find the necessary time to make headway. They need volumes of attention, whether I have projects to complete, work to do or if they started their day at 4.30am. You seem to be getting through with great success though. My wife take primary care of ours as I think yours does as well, but that then means for me the financials are wafer thin and as such, even if I do find the time I have to get everything pretty much right out the box, there is no room for excess materials, tools that turned out not to be used or hours pondering next steps. I am sure there must be others in your audience who would really benefit from some of the details on how you are managing to stay so productive when clearly you have so many other pulls on your attention and alike. Others whose gardens are starting to resemble a tip with projects that need work and homes with a list of jobs that is getting longer and longer. Maybe it would make for an interesting and engaging future video? Either way, great content - keep it coming.
Self-employed Gardener here, but now mostly a stay at home Dad (more so with lockdown, wife is NHS). Similarly I'd also be interested in videos on your time management and just general discussion on juggling all those balls/spinning all those plates. I often feel myself being overwhelmed by all my financial responsibilities, home and garden projects I want or need to do, the raising of my son, being a husband, a dog owner, multiple hobbies and a businessman. I feel stretched thin a lot of the time and often feel I never hit the mark on anything I do because of this. I know I must not be the only one, but sometimes it feels like you are the only one in the whole world making constant cock-ups while everyone else is doing amazing and loving life.
if you want advice from someone, try not spewing your life story. No one has time to read it, just get to the core of what you're asking.
I would like similar insights / info too - really appreciate it. Guess its a mindset and their are some useful mantras - would love to know what they are 😀
You have to do things in 2-3 hour blocks, this is a good time-frame to be efficient, but also gives you opportunity to tend to other commitments.

No point in rushing that bit and then have a patio or path fail early. Always amazed how much people spend on natural stone to then lay it on not much more than sand and soil. 👍

What did you use for the base? And is it nice enough to keep like that?
Not sure what you mean but on top of this subbase we laid 100 mm of self binding gravel, which is basically a pretty version of the subbase as it Compacts in the same way.
@@TheRestorationCouple That is what I meant, the self binding gravel. I've been looking to use it since seeing it on garden rescue, but there wasn't many details there. Could you recommend the one you used?
It’s just the blend that the local aggregates merchant sells. Same stuff used on driveways and footpaths etc. I’ll cover it I’m more detail in a video but it’s worked well. Cost me around £45 a bulk bag.
Hi, May I ask you I have prepared my base with road base and compacted it well. Does it have to be 100 % level. It has few high and low spots at few places that I am not able to rectify to 100 %. Would adding pavers sand on next step not fix these few spots. Please share. Thank You !
It doesn't need to be exact as like you say they bedding mortar or sand can account for a few dips but best to get it as close as possible,
@TheRestorationCouple Can you tell me the difference between the weed control fabric and the geo-textile fabric you use? (I'm in the process of doing mine and I'm using the black WC fabric and wondered what pros and cons each have?)

I find using a regular rake upside down does the job if it's all you have to hand. :)

You should get a socket adapter for the impact driver, so much quicker 👍🏻
I do have one but knew I’d get folks telling me not to use chrome sockets! 😂 I’ll get some impact versions one day.
Type 1 is 40mm to dust and can be compacted in layers of 100mm, keep it damp and it will compact better
Exactly, although I usually don't do quite as much as 100mm with a smaller plate compactor like this. 👍

Yes just green, white oak.
If possible, could you ask your little helpers to tie up their hair while working??
( I mean it is a good practice. You could possibly tell them the reason why loose hair almost always means trouble, if they ask. And I guess that is the norm in work sites, shops and laboratories 🤔🤔)

That was super helpful has have just put down about 25mm of subbase and ordered another the level is quite low so imagine I'll need another two bags to bring it up to 100mm and compact it
It’s amazing how much you end up needing. I came up short on this project like I always do so I had to order more. It all depends on what it’s for, sometimes 75mm is plenty, whereas for a driveway you might need twice or more than that.
The product is back on sale at Aldi. Obviously you caused loads of people to hit the website, and I suspect they had some left over. £289.99 is the price, wife said no so am sharing so others can benefit!
I had a tipoff and pass on the offer this morning on Instagram. Not sure how many there are left but it’s a great buy if you have somewhere to store it. I don’t, so that was a perfect excuse to build another shed. 😂

Hi, I've been watching your vids for a while now and love them! I wonder if you would know how to soften "scalpings" as I ordered mine but fell ill and have only just recovered, now they are quite sold in the ton bags? Ive watered them a bit and that seems to help a bit but is there a better way?

I could really use your advice. I’m in the process of creating the sub base for my patio and am stuck on how I should go about squaring the corners.
Tape measure and the 3,4,5 method is the easiest way. Just measure out 3 one way 4 the other and check it’s 5 between the points.
