I just removed a ton of weeds and muck from between my patio using a circular wire brush on electric drill. It worked a treat and I was able to clear an area about 8 x 8 metres in a couple of hours. Now it's ready for fresh mortar.
just found this vid as been trying to re-point my patio and each time it's failed..when you say you enjoy it your welcome to try 🤣i'll give this method a go 👍
“You can, in fact, polish a turd.” 😂 thanks for the chuckle Keith, under the weather at the moment so it’s just what I needed. And you know what? This particular turd polished up quite well!! Keep it up :)
Glad you heard about the ingenious slab lifter. I’ve had a lot of success with a 3” deep compacted sand base. Screeded soil and then sand. Tiles laid with appropriate spacing. Dry mortar mix swept into spaces. Then wet it down and wait for the mortar to set. We have a clay soil. With that miserable narrow side yard it looks like you’ll be able to pull up the tiles easily.
I'm currently in the process of doing something similar to our old patio, I found a hammer and an old flathead screwdriver was the best method for getting the old pointing up
For anybody thinking of using the modern resin stuff, read the instructions and data sheets. Inlaid a patio last year using a 4:1 mix under the slabs. Looked into some resin for the pointing and most stated it should only be used on a base of at least 6:1. Appearantly the resin is permeable so needs a slightly permeable base below (or what they said to me). In the end used the method in this video and it becomes quite enjoyable once yoy get going.
My suggestions , angle grinder with a mortar rake attachment, like a drill bit but specific for getting out mortar and or a mortar disc for the angle grinder. You can buy a shroud for both the discs and the rake but visibility is reduced of where you are cutting but helps a lot with dust extraction. You can use boiling water to control weeds easily for future reference or a weed burner off Amazon etc is a cheap option. A brushed in mix then water can over it works well for repointing. If ever replacing think about installing aco drains around the perimeter of the house. Nice job on it all 👍
Thanks, I need to do this - fortunately I have zero mortar at the moment, just weeds and soil 😵 so most of the slabs actually need lifting to clear the roots out first - I did a portion last year but didn't do the mortar thinking I should do the rest and level them - so I need to do that again now 🤦♂
Large amounts of snow clearing salt are very good at suppressing weeds between the slabs where you don’t have adjacent growing beds, and the Patio Clear product (blue plastic Jerry can) works very well at suppressing moss and algae
Great video Dylan with your young assistant Keith. For your empty part of the patio a couple of Adirondack chairs would look great for you and your other half.
Like watching your stuff, I’ve been ripped off so many times but cowboys it’s better to just learn how to do it yourself, some mistakes but you learn by them🌹
@@RagnBoneBrown I was just going to suggest the same mortar rake. They work well and are pretty cheap. You can also get a shroud for the angle grinders and hook up a vacuum hose. Search on RUclips for mortar raking and you should see a few different methods. Normally used for repointing a wall or fetching a brick or two out where say the face has blown off due to frost. You can also get a mortar gun, much like a silicone gun but for mortar. They can take little bit of getting used to but when you have the hang of it and the right mix it is very quick.
They're not great though, I used two for repointing a section of wall, the screwfix one did about 1sqm - and the toolstation one only managed a few bricks...
use a grinder with a mason disk. go carfully up against the paving slab and its a clean fast cut. if u go beans or ham on it you will chip or go off line and grind the paving slabs.
Fantastic work, Keith! The place is looking much better now! 😃 And, you know, I have a small concerted area on the side of my house... We used it to park one of my parents cars, but not anymore... And I'm seriously thinking about making a table and benches to put there! And it's a fantastic place during summer afternoons, because it winds a lot there. (And here things get hotter than hell! 😬) Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Others have suggested a mortar rake disc but there is also a mortar rake "bit" that I've used successfully - Toolstation 71904 Brick removing Mortar Raker, they are under a tenner
I’m about to level a bunch of slabs in the garden. I can just pull these up, they are massive but under with is just sand and a bunch of soil on top of the grit base. So a dry mix of 4:1 builder sand and cement raked on the top should do it? The. Water it in? Seems too simple lol. I have to use concrete for the pointing because the gaps are multiple inches.
I am contemplating a diy pointing on our sandstone patio as well. The easy joint seems quick for a diy but are they as durable as a traditional sand cement mix?
I had to remove the pointing in a patio, angle grinder seemed risky to damage the slabs so found a multi tool with a grout removal type blade was great and quite quick.
Spraying patios like this with a mix of white vinegar and salt keeps they weeds at bay for quite a while. May smell like a fish and chip shop for a few hours, but it saves a lot of effort. I treat my block driveway that way and works quite well.
Well, this was bad timing I just went through the same process with our path last weekend. Why on earth would you use a drill bit to remove old mortar!
Angle grinder and diamond disc would make quick easy work of that
